Just a bit of fun. There have been so many different interpretations of old Joe over the years and every Squaxx that likes to draw has sketched a quick Dredd from time to time. It's only natural. He's sort of my "go to" character for sketching when my brain wants to warm up it's art lobe! So, here are a few Dredd heads I've drawn. Now post yours! Weather it be phone doodle or fully rendered masterpiece!

So, "you ready? You look ready." :D
Lovely stuff Darren. I will post some stuff up later on when I can access my home pc.
I'm looking forward to trying this but if you're as crap at drawing as me you may need some guidance material:

A quick search threw up a few of these videos and this is the one I liked the best and it's the shortest. If it's anyone from this board, nice one.

Been working directly into a sketchbook with Copic multiliners — no pencils, as a way of trying to stop me constantly fiddling... draw something — either it's worth working up, or it's not! So, a bit rough and ready but inspired by this thread...

Haha perfect. Great thread. As always it's the simple ideas that are the best. Dredd Head Thread. Great work in here.
Yeh, love this thread. It was James Dilworths idea. All credit to him! ;)
A really rubbish attempt done years back of the first Dredd meeting the latest, an idea that hopefully will be resurfacing done properly by an Art Droid for my "Someone Old, Someone New" project before too long ;)
This is my first ever attempt at drawing the man. The symmetry and dimensions of the helmet I found quite hard. What point does everyone start from? In this one I started with the cross but it's all gone a bit wonky so I couldn't fit his SS visor reflections in properly. Apologies as always to Neil McClements for nicking his shading style. When I realised that's what I was doing I tried to vary it.

Ha, thanks Echidna! great Dredds there from Mangamax and Third Estate Ned. Love the old-school Dredd there. Might have a crack at that myself. ;)

Cracking, Jim!
Aye, a very good image. Love a profile shot of the helmet.
Here was my 1st ever digital effort drawing a Dredd head from a year or so ago, done in Manga studio. A bit rough and ready but I like it!
When I get chance to dig out more I will post more up!

Cheers
Jim
Kind words Jim, thanks.
Yeah, MacNeil is a long-time influence of mine where Dredds concerned. He gets Dredd so spot on, it's difficult for me to see Joe in any other way.
Dug these experiments out my hard drive. One is drawn on a fingerpainting app I got for my daughter that I steal off her and the other was me trying to do something with scribbles - and bring back the early helmet design.

Wow! This thread is full of amazing artwork!! Why aren't you all working for 2000ad...??
Okay, I'm going to add some Dredd drawings I did some time ago, before I got my groove back. They're not the best work I've done but I hope they're in keeping with the theme. I was going to include a recent SJS picture I did, but I suspect that's going off topic...

You always do a top Dredd Woolly. Here's something that turned up in my Instagram feed this morning. Superb rendition of Dredd from Survival Geeks artists Neil Googe. Always loved Neils work and this is no exception. Has he ever actually drawn Dredd for the prog? If not, well, hi Tharg! ;)

Just a lego Dredd to go and that's all media covered ? :)
Neil - Brilliant Dillon-esque Dredd there, something about the helmet (*insert fnarr here*)
James - Suitably monolithic Dredd portrait, and i adore your painting style.
Pineapplehead - Thanks for the kind words. Hope to see more of your stuff posted up
James, I just saw that Dredd of yours on Facebook and hopes you had posted it here. Absolutely brilliant. ;)

So many good stoney faces. Lovely sketch amines2058. I really like PJ's confidence with the inks. Mines clearly lacking. Manga Studio has been too good to me :P
During a rare moment where both kids were asleep. I quickly dived at my materials drawer and brought out the brush pens and inks. With the aid of tea and cookies for fuel managed to go traditional and drew a Dredd head. It's been a while so it's a tad rusty.

I can't for the life of me remember if I copied this but it was a super quick attempt at a more Flinty type Dredd.

Really liking the Henry Flint vibe in the last batches Supersurfer and Woolly. Nothing like vibrant comic art. I'm too used to a fine detail mindset to pull it off.
Those last few have been beauties! I get a genuine thrill when I see new posts in this thread, as I'm sure a lot of folks do! After a flurry of Dillon/Flint-esque Dredds, here's one with a McCarthy vibe. Always loved this helmet design!

Class, lovin the different styles comin over,
So I thought I would have a go at this.
What? Is he meant to have his helmet on?
I imagine this is from Day Of Chaos where he realises they've lost it...

Cheers Darren! :D
Wowzers :o
Stunning stuff, and recognisably Urban.
Is there an 'inks only' version?
I'm currently attempting to teach myself digital painting. Turns out it's really bloody hard! I've started this from scratch about 5 times and this is where I'm currently at.

That's terrific Radiator!
So much great work gets posted round these parts with hardly a comment.
Another gem from James. And that's looking great, radiator. I think that's the first piece of yours I've seen that isn't in your usual style (for want of a better term).
Cheers, yeah something a bit different. I've probably bitten off way more than I can chew - this is a tiny part of a much larger piece. It's both constricting and weirdly liberating not working in a pen and ink/comic book style.
More sketchbook shiz.

Really good scribbles Beadle86. Those scars on Dredd's face are great character touches. Must admit I've never really thought how Dredd would look without the faceplate. Your version certainly looks the business.

The Comic book version. I could never really imagine his features the iconic faceplate distracted me to much. I remember some perps saw Dredd's face once and shrieked in horror at the sight.
W.R.Logan haha never thought anything like that about that scribble ....ruined it now
I do these rough sketches while watching tv and dont really think about what i'm drawing just a general idea pops in my head and just go with it.In this case someone on tv mentioned father figure and thought of Dredd as a father figure to his clone Rico. Just thought it would be a change to draw Dredd without helmet.Would like to see other peoples interpretations of Dredd without helmet might be interesting from some of you talented lot :)
This was a quick rough of an Eldster Dredd for one of our recent forum art comps. I entered a different idea but might as well show this here.

One easy point for recognising the source, another (easy?) point for knowing the prog number... :)
Pirates of the Black Atlantic, of courzzzz... Prog number wise (without recourse to Barney) it ran alongside the start of Portrait of a Mutant, which starts in Prog 200. So either 199 or 201? I know 200 has a Tharg cover...
Nice work too!

Not really, it's just that finding all of Portrait was one of my first forays into targetted buying of backprogs, from the second premises of The Diceman on Dublin's Grafton St. circa 1983-5. I know I went 'back' from there to get the start of Pirates and then forward to get the early run of Rogue.
Thanks TB.
Prog-wise, I just feel 199 is as near as dammit a round number, and given the quality of Bolland's cover... it's one you'd expect to know. It's certainly my vintage.
Been a while, sketched this the other night...
(Apologies for the quality - no working scanner!)

With apologies to Woolly, a random impulse spurred me to ink and colour one of his splendid Dredd-head pencils. Apple Pencil using Procreate on an iPad Pro.

I always find it interesting when a penciler get's someone else to ink, a little bit of the inkers own style usually make's it's way into the finished picture. Thats bloody marvelous though, Jim.
It's... beautiful! :o
Y'know, I've been so down on my artwork that I've barely put pencil to paper this last year, but that pic looks so bloody lovely that I feel proud to have played a part, and might have to try and get my mojo back (again! ::))
Thanks Jim. That's made my day :)
Love that, Jim and Woolly! You guys make a great team. ;)
Thanks for the kind words, especially Woolly -- don't be disheartened, your work is great, and I'm just pleased you weren't utterly horrified! It's horrible when you feel like your mojo has deserted you, but the only way I've found of dealing with it is to slog through. If it means churning out drawings that you instantly discard, so be it, but it's almost like there's a finite number of bad drawings in you, and you just have to get through them...
Cheers!
Jim

Wonderful Darren! How on earth did you achieve such solid colours like that?
Thanks Hawkmumbler! The original drawing was done with a Pentel brush pen, the colours are Manga Studio. ;) (a trick swiped from the mighty Ben Oliver!)
Well that's something I would never have though of, nor would have dared colour anything in MS that wasn't scanned first!
It's an excellent effect, something almost Fumetti about it.
*Googles Fumetti*, ha, thank you Hawkmumbler, I normally ink in MS, too, but the pen was laying there unused for the last few months. Surprised it still works!

A great honor, Steve, but I think both versions are equally "Dreddy" and, gosh, your style just screams goals TBH.
Here's my own 10 min Dredd Head. Helmet is waaaay off but i'll try inking it in a bit and see if that fixes it.
Thanks Hawkmumbler, much appreciated.
Great bottom lip on your piece, Bolland wouldn't need to tweak that bad boy. I personally always struggled with the length of the helmet but have settled on the fact that it looks right (for my take on Dredd's face) if I line it up with his jaw line.
Thanks in return, Steven, must try and remember that tip when drawing the visor in future, wasn't able to fix it in the inking so it still looks much too tight. Plus in usual fashion everything I draw looks much too flat. ::)

That's wonderful Steven. I love the light reflection shading effect on the helmet in particular.
Prog cover worthy, Steven. You utterly talented bunch, who would have thought a whole thread dedicated to head and shoulders would have been so delightful!
Stunning, Steven. You make it look easy.
I couldn't resist...

Thanks chaps. SS that is a superb helmet.
Yes, that's great Supersurfer. The helmet weathering is a nice touch.
Thanks folks. It was fun busting up that helmet.
Yeh, love that one SuperSurfer. The battle damage adds real impact!

So much good stuff on here. As threatened, the analogue counterpart to my iPad sketch... Assorted brush pens, Copic colours, shitty phone pic because my scanner's inaccessible just now...
James – that's ace. My brain would hurt trying to work out how to draw that reflection.
Cool sketch, Leigh. Looks fine as is. I do like seeing WIP. I tend to make a mess which I then have to rein in.
Like the profile, Jim. Especially the shadows and old style helmet.

Wasn't sure wether to put this in the sketch thread or not - felt it was better suited here:

That is a cracking start there Wooly. Looking forward to seeing that completed as well. Please don't just wait until it is finished though. Let us see it as you go.
Very nice indeed, Woolly - If I could draw like that, Id be chuffed as owt.

When is enough too much? When your Dredd becomes a bearded big nose.
Such a terrific profile, I'm a huge fan of clean, bold line work. You've also a great ability to make it look 3D where so often head shots like this look flat. Great colours too, you monster!

That's an amazing piece of work. I think they use 'kays' in MC1 (I remember Chopper saying it to Jug); so KPH it is.

I've tried a few of them and found generally they range from being fiddly and overkill (ProCreate) to strange and fiddly (ArtRage). At the moment I'm primarily using Tayasui Sketches II which is simple and easy to use, and has some very nice art tools. The brush tool for inking is the best I've found so far. The water colour tools are awesome and simple, and behave like real water colours :)
Also it lets you group your art into sketchbooks, which I find really useful.
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/tayasui-sketches-draw-paint/id641900855?mt=8
After using Procreate for quite sometime, which I love, I tried Sketches 2 also.

Not sure I'd want to see an entire comic drawn in that style, but I like how much it strays from the usual shapes (of the red bit on the helmet, the badge) but is still recognisably Joe.
I'm a diabolical 'artist' but by heck am I determined to improve some, I think I preferred my plain inks over colours though. REALLY gotta improve there some.

Some amazing art in here
Sorry not posted long time lost my account
Here is a 3d model head i made
Very (very, very!) rough and sketchy Dredd — my first attempt at anything arty in any form both a) in decades and b) on an iPad. It's admittedly a wee bit more than just a head, if you can tell ... ;-)
I drew this recently on large cardstock paper with pencils and inks. I directly used the cover to Prog 1741 by Garry Brown as a reference. I have nowhere near the skills of Brown but admire his style and gave it a go (he uses what look like effortless brush strokes but I struggle through each line!). It was good practice anyhow.
Impressive detail Rogue Judge!
Thanks Mardroid! Much appreciated :)

Just had a re-read of the thread...
...nothing but corpses from the Photobucket wars... :'(
Thanks Woolly :) the new art comp inspired me to do this. I've been working hard on improving my skills and learning how to art properly. It's hard work!
I'm working on a few entries now in a similar style... let's wait and see.
Yeah, shame to see so much art disappear on this thread like that.
That's fantastic, MightyBren!

Have Photobucket ditched their stupid pricing system? I don't think I EVER saw a forum where someone had actually paid them.
I use deviantart for hosting images... I never really was a fan of photobucket. Good to see some artwork is returning though :)
Here's another Dredd head. It's not my art stars entry... that will be much more ambitious. I'm just prepping and finding my style.
The perspective is a bit wonky on the helmet. Anyone got any ideas where I went wrong?

Best digital inking tools on the market, bar none. Add into that the perspective rulers, of which someone (whose name I've completely forgotten) said: 'you'd pay the full price for this software just to get those perspective rulers as a Photoshop plug-in.'
