Anyone else bought a 3DS XL?
Found this on CVG:
"New and existing owners who register before January 15, 2013 will be able to download one of five games from the eShop.
The titles on offer are Super Mario 3D Land, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, New Art Academy, New Style Boutique and Freakyforms Deluxe.
Owners who've already registered 3DS XL systems with Club Nintendo will still be able to receive a free game by logging into their Club Nintendo account and following the instructions on the banner about the promotion."
Had to do a bit of searching to actually find the promotion, as its a bit hidden.
-Go to 'My Profile'
-Click the arrow next to the banner to find the promotion.
Why did they do this? Have they dropped the RRP of the 3DS XL suddenly?

Darksiders
Metro 2033
Red Faction Armageddeon
Company of Heroes
Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts
Company of Heroes Tales of Valor
Saints Row 3 (only if you pledge over $5.67 as of this post)
These aren't physical copies, they will only give you CD keys which you then activate on steam, windows only.

Unfortunately I'm not sure if this works for people outside of the US. I don't see why it shouldn't, if it's using paypal then currency conversion shouldn't be a problem.
I'm no sure if you can still get it but for a short period of time you can get a free code for the Hitman Sniper Challange on the offical page. Also the amount of codes are limited but maybe you can still get one. I got a code for my PS3 a few days ago.

Hitman Absolution.
Fiver over on the Square Enix website. Gives you a code to put into steam, where oddly its still showing as £20, job done
Anyway, enjoyed the original Hitman way back when and IGN gave this new one 9/10 so looking forward to it.
1.4 of 11gb downloaded.....

The revamped and optimised Final Fantasy 7 also a fiver as is Sleeping Dogs which I also really enjoyed.
FF 7..? Shiiiit! I haven't got the time..!
It's still the same old FFVII, just tweaked to play on current PCs and an added cheevo system (which is no bad thing). Squenix have said they'll never do a revamped FFVII till they produce a game better than it, which seems unlikely.
Yeah? I thought they'd tidied up the graphics for this version and made it all higher rez.
But yeah... I want this. Want to have it on my pc. Dunno if I want to start it again though as I lost a LOT of hours to this back on my old playstation. Absolutely loved it.
Anyone seen Final Fantasy Advent Children btw? Well worth a look if you're a fan of FF7
It's higher res insofar as it will play at higher resolutions than was possible on the PS1, so it will look crisper, but they haven't upped any polygon counts or textures. There was a techdemo of FFVII done to launch the PS3 which is itself showing its age http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVCYy8C5Av4 but that was as far as they got.
It would cost a prohibitive amount to do a proper update of it though. They'd have to generate so much content.

I'm not sure. The current games are pretty huge and unlike a gamble with any new game a redux of 7 would be a guaranteed hit. They've updated several of the earlier games ( admittedly for handhelds). I'd buy the crap out of it.
Not interested in FF but i'll take both Hitman and Sleeping Dogs. :D

What would you recommend?
The ones that immediately jumped out at me (I already own them) were-
Amnesia - The dark descent, one of the scariest games I ever played (play it in the dark with headphones on if you dare).
Trine 1 & 2 are very pretty physics based platform / puzzlers.
Legend of Grimrock - Old school dungeon master style RPG.
World of Goo - physics based construction / puzzler.
Limbo - Arty platform / puzzle game.
Terraria - quite good, kind of like a 2D version of minecraft.
I'm thinking of getting Machinarium, Deadlight and Miner Wars 2081 if I can justify buying even more games that I don't have time to play :)
Agree on Limbo. Beautiful stuff. Bit short but well worth it

Apparently the Fable 3 freebie is part of a new service, they're going to be doing a bit of a playstation plus and giving gold members a couple of free games a month (I believe Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed 2 are the next couple).
A lot of people are bitching that it's not as generous as playstation plus, but as I've already got gold this is a just a really nice bonus.

Anyone have any theories on how this is going to work on the next gen consoles? Neither Xbox One or PS4 are backward compatible so what are new customers going to get for their free games each month? Will it be ported versions of 360 / PS3 games or free indie titles?
Giving away indie titles is fine but it hardly seems as good a deal as getting premium titles like Fable 3 or AC 2.
PS4 is giving away a version of one of its launch titles (Drive Club) on day 1.

Seconded, the Mass Effect trilogy is hands down my favorite set of games out there. The first one is a bit rough around the edges now by today's standards, with a lot of clunkiness that was ironed out for the 2nd game, but the Story/Universe/Sensation Of Roaming The Galaxy As The Captain Of Your Badass Crew is all present and correct! A bargain.

Load of stuff (http://www.examiner.com/article/xbox-live-ultimate-game-sale-features-assassin-s-creed-iii-max-payne-3) cheap on Xbox Live. Is Mass Effect worth a couple of quid?
My favourite series of games this generation. I'll admit I shed a tear or two at the end of ME3.
A bargain.
The Mass Effect games are great. Genuine interactive movies. With hot aliens and shooting.

iOS-wise.... Peggle HD is WELL worth getting if you dont already have. Great game for when you have 5 mins to kill and free at the moment. Same for Flight Control HD

And once you get those (and you really should), you can go and download the mods. I would recommend Minerva and the Stanley Parable. There's also a mod that lets you play the original half-life with the HL2 engine, it's called Black Mesa. Good Steam.

Bioshock Infinite for 57% off (PC version for Steam)
http://www.greenmangaming.com/search/?q=bioshock+infinite (http://www.greenmangaming.com/search/?q=bioshock+infinite)
There are discounts on the console versions on the above link too.
It works out at 14.99 for the PC version which is cheaper that the daily deal on the Steam summer sale today :D
There's a discount code you can use too, not sure how much extra it knocks off - GMG20-F202F-UI40F
I'm pretty sure this expires at midnight.
Well, thanks for that! I just got Bioshock Infinite for £12.
Humble Bundle > https://www.humblebundle.com/
For $5 which was £3.49 I just got....
Sacred 2
Risen 2
Saints Row 2
Saints Row 3 and all DLC
Dead Island GOTY Edition with all DLC
If you haven't played Saints Row 3, which I nabbed on a steam flash sale for about a fiver last year, its STRONGLY recommended. Think GTA but with a really OTT sense of humour to it.
Best part? Well the price... but the above give you steam codes so if you're a steam junkie like me and like all your acheivements and other pointless crap it's all in there

Beat me to it! I have always wondered what Saints Row and Dead Island are like. Now I can find out
Just replayed the first half hour of Saints Row The Third. It really is like they wrote a game just for me.
Funny, violent, seriously over the top stupid action and great music... once you disable the rap radio stations
LOVE IT
You've still the ace zombie breakout to get to, Meanie - and the levels where you play as a talking toilet with a gun.
Saints Row 3 was a revelation, especially after those dreadful first two games that initially - and unfairly - made me dismiss it outright as sub-GTA garbage. I honestly couldn't give a shit about GTA5, but I'm super-stoked for Saints Row 4.

After reading some of the above posts, the 3rd one is on my hit list.

I'd previously turned my nose up at SR3, but that does sound bloody brilliant!
Crackdown is now free for download for xbox live gold members until the 15th, apparently Dead Rising 2 and Case Zero will be free from the 16th to the end of the month!
Never really been into dead rising, but i didnt try DR2, so for free, why on earth not. Ive played the bobbins out of crackdown but ill download it (and shortly after cancel the download), so if i ever fancy it i have digital rights to a copy!
What is with Microsoft throwing up all these free games, we've gotten Fable 3 (pretty average but free!!!), Assasins Creed 2 which is actually pretty ace (never followed the series as the first was just a bore but this one definatly a step up) and as mentioned Crackdown is up this week. All open world game with hunreds of hours gameplay and dont cost a cent, are MIcrosoft sucking up over the poorly recieved (and very poorley marketed) XBone debarcle?
I'm currently playing Machwarrior Online, very proffesional Free to Play PC game based on the old Battletech 3050 tabletop game and the old Mechwarrior PC games. Unfortunatly no single player and if you dont want to drop any $ a bit of a grind to get enough C-Bills to get a new Mech but lots of fun and very competent, its certainly not Pay to Win like a lot of these so called free to play games but certainly good enough to get me to drop a few $ on camo scemes, paint and the like to give the developers what they deserve.

That's the best deal I've seen for a while. I've just reserved one at my local store but they only had 2 left!
That's a great deal alright James.
I'm still gonna pass on this generation of Sony's handheld though- I barely have enough time to play my 3DS as it is.

Played the most recent once, Guerllia, recently and it felt very dated. Fun blowing stuff up for a little while, though.
Haven't tried any others. I think they are all iterations of each other. It depends on how much you like blowing up buildings and other stuff.
The Red Faction before last was prob the best one, IMHO. The buildings were all totally destructible! It was free roaming too. One mission had you taking out a massive canyon-spanning bridge, with one well aimed shot. It was like a massive 3D version of Angry Birds. Thoroughly enjoyable if you like blowing shit up.

I dont think its a direct result of the E3 debacle, theyre just trying to compete directly with Sony. Sony's Playstation Plus service has been offering free games for a long time now, and they actually offer some quite recent and fantastic games (so MS have lots of work to do still). theres potential for MS to lose plenty of its userbase with the coming of a new generation.

The campaign lasts about 7 hours though this was on the RECRUIT the easiest level. The gameplay is a little leaden but you get a choice of weaponry assault rifle, shotgun etc and can even find guns from the Movie 'Aliens' like Vesquez's Smart gun, frosts flamethrower.
Guns can be upgraded by earning points enabling you to obtain silencers or better explosive grenades but the Smart gun is something you acquire in the game; it's not a default weapon and you soon burn through it's 600 rounds anyway so if you fancied yourself blazing away like Drake, it happens but very rarely. The weapons are ok but the Aliens can take a lot of damage and I found myself firing with the assault rifle only to see the Alien warrior I'd been blastin' leap at me, seemingly unaffected by 10mm hailstorm. Controlled bursts and try and hit the head if you can.
It's very linear; go to here, fight Aliens; go to this corridor, fight more Aliens. You get buddies who accompany you a lot of the time but they can be a mixed blessing firing at some Aliens while apparently oblivious to other ones so the AI isn't great. If an Alien gets close and you shoot it your armour is usually damaged by about a third as the acid explodes everywhere which is pretty annoying. Theres a quite a bit of ammunition but I did run out of bullets on one gun the battle rifle and a shotgun too but if you press 'B' [on the PC] and select a new one it's fully stocked with ammo. This is something I found out on the internet the hud for the game is very poor info wise. Only the upgrade page was clear and informative.
There is a 'sneak through' where you are weaponless, surrounded by Aliens and have to make as little noise as possible or die which some gamers dislike intensely and your weapons don't effect the Pred-alien or make much of an impact on the Alien Queen either -so why bother having them if there so useless Game makers? Xenos filth aren't the only enemy evil Weyland Yutani corporate mercenaries can be tough too particularly if they got a Sentry gun with them.
Basically if you didn't like Aliens vs Predators you properly won't care for Colonial Marines. Is it worth £3.74?
Let's put it this way you shouldn't pay a penny more for it IMHO.
Yeah, def worth £3.74. It's back to £15 now. For that I'd say it's only for the hardcore Alien completist.
Cant tell if it's still free, won't show the price now I got it, but Star Wars pinball was a giveaway this morning. Only gives you the one table but for bugger all it's well worth it. Plays really nice on the ipad, might be a bit tight on an iphone screen. Free tho so give it a shot.
You get the Empire Strikes Back table. There's also Boba Fett and Clone Wars ones as in-app purchases

Nice one, missed it last time they were selling it cheap!
For any fans of old school point and click adventures I just picked up The Next Big Thing for £1.74
Actually I got it for free as I had £2 in my steam wallet from selling spray painted variants of Counter Strike guns I'd got as free random drops in the marketplace. Fuck knows why people are willing to pay real cash for these. Granted it's only 50p or so a pop but still... its the same gun with a paint job!
Anyway, looks like a cool one. Beautiful art style. And if it's not... cost bugger all

There's an interesting zombie game on Steam atm...Zafehouse diaries only £7. It's unusual in theres seems to be no shooting, just the managing of a bunch of survivors. You have to decide who to let into the group and stop said group from imploding. So if anyone has played Zafehouse..whats it like?

As an added bonus, the Arkham games have now had the execrable Games for Windows Live and Securerom DRM patched out of them in favour of Steamworks :D.
Also, if you already own the games on Steam (you can add the key from retail versions to Steam too) they have upgraded them to the GOTY editions with all the DLC thrown in free :).
The only downside is that save files are not compatible, so if you are part way through like I am with AC then you will lose your progress. There is a fiddly workaround I believe though but I am pondering starting again anyway.
I couldn't be happier seeing the death of GFWL, I hope devs continue to patch it out of existing games like this before they pull the plug on it for good next year.
If they patch it out of Fallout3 then that would give me an excuse to go through it again :D
Ditto here too, I deliberately bought Fallout 3 for the PS3 to avoid GFWL and missed out on all the mods etc so I would probably pick it up for the PC if they fix it.
There are other games where it is being patched out too, Bioshock 2 was cleansed last month so that is on my shopping list come the next Steam sale.

Sleeping Dogs
Limbo
and while I havent played yet I've only heard great things about Fallout3 and Fallout New Vegas so as both ultimate editions are up for under £4 it's probably the best time to grab 'em

Populous - FD6N-B7Q5-RKUD-TC2X-437M
Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 Uprising (whatever that is) - 6JM5-WLTR-VMQD-CXDX-ECQN
Bah. The Populous one is used.
C&C Uprising, BTW, is a mental stand alone expansion to Red Alert 3 with a very fun Anime/ Mecha army.
I got the populous origin key too and will never use it. Sending now
Ah sorry Dr X, guess someone must have grabbed it. I'd got them as part of a recent humble bundle (those deals are amazing, and for charity so a guilt-free spend!)
Red Alert does sound pretty cool, but I've always struggled with that style of game. My brain doesn't seem wired correctly for that kind of tactical planning, I'm terrible at them!

Scribblenauts
Oh, and the game of the year editions (which if you dont know means the ones with ALL the DLC) of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City
Absolutely amazing collection of games for pretty much fuck all.
That's the best bundle yet imo. The Arkham games are a couple of the best games ever made and despite owning them on 360 I don't have all the dlc. Also a huge fan of those F.E.A.R. games on console so at that price worth grabbing just to have them on PC too.
These bundles are amazing.
Just picked it up myself. Look forward to having a play.
Am gutted that I missed the recent Duke Nukem bundle though :( Duke Nukem plus all add on packs, Serious Sam and Shadow Warrior all for about £2. I loved all those games many moons ago and would have loved to have had a go at these again especially at that price.
Oh well I am sure they will appear again at some epoint!
I loved all three Fear games. Highly recommended

It was on an Amazon Black Friday week deal. I would've posted it here first but it literally went live just as I went to the site and then they sold out in about 2 minutes!

Rogue Trooper £1.50 at Rebellion Gamestore. I just bought it again.
I'd buy it again, but I own it on 3 different formats as it is!

It was 2006, and while comparably sparse if you hold it up against a modern game, it looks okay for nearly 8 years old.
Although: why no new 2000ad game from Rebellion in that time?
I think steam are- or were offering LA NOIRE for just £4.99.
Good Old Games have Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics for free just now (you just need to set up an account, it's a decent retro site so worth it anyway).
Good luck, I've been trying off and on today and the page just crashes for me, too much load apparently.

The Humble Bundle Store have a bunch of games discounted just now, Gone Home was $4.99 for a short window last night, but even at the $9.99 it's sitting at now is probably worth a purchase (am hearing a lot of mention of it in game of the year discussions).

Pretty good deal.
Animal Crossing is awesome in 3D though...
The 3ds is a great console but I actually really, really like the 2ds. It's sort of fantastically ugly and bulky and Fisher-Price like - a bit like the original Game Boy. I like the positioning of the controls too.

Just came here to post the same thing.
Better get in quick though, there's a forced waiting period - I signed up for the free copy this morning, and was told I was in a line and would be emailed when I could claim the game...and I still haven't received that email...
New Humble Indie Bundle - https://www.humblebundle.com/
Pay what you want, get a bundle of games, all completely legal.
Paid £2.50 for a bundle of all of the following games on Steam (but also available non-Steam DRM-free):
Guacamelee - fun and stylish platformer
Dust: An Elysian Tail - cutesy anthropomorphic animal platformer. Haven't played this yet.
Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams - played the demo. Evil platformer sequel to the 16-bit Mario rip-off.
The Swapper - action puzzler with claymotion visuals, looks interesting.
Antichamber - brilliant 1st person Escher-inspired craziness. Will really screw your mind.
Monaco: What's Yours is Mine - 2d stealth multiplayer with single player available, haven't installed this yet.
Plus more games to be added to the bundle over the coming days.
But don't be cheap like me, pay well over the average and support both indie devs and charity...

Titanfall PC pre-order for £27.99 - http://www.simplycdkeys.com/origin/titanfall (http://www.simplycdkeys.com/origin/titanfall)
The price is for the CD key only, they email the key to you the day before release and you add it to your Origin account. I've pre-ordered it myself from here. I've never used them myself before but after a little Googling they seem legit.
A bit cheaper than the £45 EA want if you order it directly through Origin :).
just got batman arkham city for about £3 on live! some other bargains as well
Dredd vs Death for £1.07 and Rogue Trooper for about £1.80 over at GOG. Two classics for less than a pint :)
If anyone got EA Origins for PC, Dead Space is free for your to download now.

Yeah they're a nice open-world parkourtastic lark - the controls are a bit awkward on the PC but you're certainly getting a lot of game for that much. I got one & two for £5 a couple of months ago and it were worth it I'd say.
Ultimate edition of Injustice Gods Among Us is £5.74 at the moment.
Well worth that, especially if you are partial to a bit of DC comics
Even if not it's a kickass fighting game. Very mortal kombat (the new edition of which is also cheap at the moment) but less blood and guts obviously. I'm enjoying the hell out of it. I suck at it but it's still fun to play.
Plants v Zombies GOTY is free on Origin.
Well, you have to use Origin to get it, but you don't need to part with cash. Just a little bit of your soul with every click.
Just Cause 2 one of me favourite ever games is only £1.99 on Steam today. Barjin - I've clocked up weeks on that thing. Just.. flying about.. blowing stuff up. Ahhh
http://store.steampowered.com/app/8190/
Yes Just Cause 2 was great fun when I used to play it.Trying to get all the water towers/fuel depots/Military bases in a City could be wonderfully frustrating.
I of course being a complete douche bag would take out my failures on the local civilian population. Oh, Liberty! What crimes have been done in thy name...
Just Cause 2 is particularly fantastic if you have nVidia 3D Vision.
Man, I bought that months ago on a Steam or a GoG sale (I forget which) and it's still not been booted up! Heard so many great things but just haven't got round to it yet. I'm having an embargo on PC game purchases until I play the ones I have I think.
Right - to make up for an embarrassing e-scam post here (and on FB and Twitter :S Groan they got me right where I'm vulnerable... my Steam lust) there is a game going on Midweek Madness this week for 69p that is an absolute belter!

Really nice and arty and very playable -definitely worth a play! Again, if unsure there's a grand demo!
Magrunner: Dark Pulse is currently FREE for 24 hours from gog.com - never heard of the game, but it's described as "technology meets cthulhu" and looks vaguely like a portal-style platform/puzzler. Worth a download, I thought!
A double dose of Freebies on XBOX Live until the end of the month.
Streetfighter 4 arcade edition - not a bad game, but some of the character designs seem a bit off. Also not as fluent as SF Alpha 2, but It's alright cos It's free.
Charlie Murder - haven't played this yet, but it has an interesting visual style.
Cheers

More like: :) :| :o :( :'( :'( :'( >:( :( >:( :( >:( :( and so on until you come to: :'( :'( :'(. Here's my vague recommendation of sorts to hopefully pique some curiosity about it...
It's not very often I quit games to "take a break" from them, with an intention of revisiting them later. Typically I only do so because something else grabs my attention instead, and I only ever abandon a game I paid money for completely if I find it too shit to continue (e.g. F.E.A.R. 3 that I wasted several hours of my life on before uninstalling it), but I occasionally stop playing a game for a specific reason tied to it. For example, with stress levels at their peak by the time I reached the Prison area of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, I simply could not go on any longer and gave it a few days break (which didn't help when I returned, mind you). Without spoiling why, let's just say that The Line (which should have been the only part of its title really) made me feel...rather bad to be playing.
The only other game I can think of off the top of my head that I had a similar reaction with is Far Cry 2 (although not the third game, which is actually trying to be very similar to The Line, I feel, difference being that it fails miserably) in which the guy you spend the whole game trying to kill gives you a reality check. The difference is: whereas my reaction there was a thoughtful "Huh" as I contemplated this and carried on, my reaction with The Line was more along the lines of, "Oh dear god, what have I done?!??" and carrying on, a weird mixture of feeling guilty, sad and angry all at once.
It's not long enough like Amnesia that you may quit several times yet find plenty left to do when you return. No, I only quit the two or three times with this. But - without spoiling what happens - I will say that there is one single moment in this game, the brilliantly executed turning point of the story, that I can almost guarantee would make you jump to the main menu and quit the fucking thing, even if you have never quit a game for any specific reason before.
How the game, and the player's perspective to it, changes from this point onwards I think is what decides whether you'll quit completely or reluctantly go on, and if that all sounds melodramatic, I would counter with the point that it's perhaps the only game you can read very serious forum posts and the like from players in moral dilemma about continuing to play.
It's a fun game like that (an intentionally generic third person shooter actually, though I won't spoil why), but it's a damn well brilliantly designed one and definitely worth soldiering on through once. Unless you were admiring the design of it or researching it like some guy did for a book he wrote on it alone (an eBook called Killing is Harmless if you're curious), however, I can't honestly see a reason to want to touch it ever again once you're done. It's a bad, bad game but, um, you should play it...?
Have to admit I don't really get the fuss with that game. I thought it was an ok shooter, and there were a couple of bits that made me feel a little bit of The Horror Of War, but I think after everyone making a huge deal about the story and the narrative I maybe expected it to do more with it. It wasn't all that interesting and I spent the whole thing right from the start thinking 'I bet it ends with <insert spoiler>, nah, that would be way too obvious and would make no sense'. And then it ended just like that.
It gets kudos points for scoring one gunfight to 'Glasgow Mega Snake' by Mogwai, but loses them again for the audio department not even bothering to find a loop point in the song so it repeats smoothly if the gunfight drags on longer than the track. It just stops really abruptly and then starts again from the beginning after a few seconds silence. 5mins work that would have taken.
So aye, afraid I'm a bit lukewarm on Spec Ops. Still well worth playing for the price though, and the other games in the pack are fantastic.

The ending was predictable for me too, but that was because one of the guys working on it mentioned Apocalypse Now / Heart of Darkness (another reason why Far Cry 2 is similar) as inspiration running up to release, I believe. You can see the influence as soon as you get into it anyway, which I suppose does make it predictable; but then again, going by the audience they were aiming the game at, I'm sure it still surprised many people, hence the big fuss over it.
WARNING: SPOILERS OF SORTS FROM HERE ON OUTAnd to be honest, I think it does deserve the praise. Unlike Far Cry 3, it does a far better job at making you hate seeing the game through to the end (if you do at all), which was a problem in Far Cry 3's case because that game was way too much fun (once I installed Ziggy's Mod anyway) for you to possibly feel the guilt the developers were aiming for. That wasn't a problem with The Line, not only because it wasn't really much fun in the gameplay department (if it were, as the developers cleverly avoided, it simply wouldn't have worked), but because the writing was much better too.
From Far Cry 3's beginning I couldn't get behind Brody as the character as I was playing as and certainly felt no guilt by the game's stupid ending, but The Line reversed that idea by having the player grow more distant from Walker instead, as he begins to, for example, sound like the kind of excited teenagers you hear using mics on online multiplayer shooters as you direct him to kill more people. It's excellent little design decisions like that that really pulled me in its favour. Besides the obviously clever choice of setting, who your "enemies" are, and what your own role in the game world is from the outset (one particularly brilliant rug pull is the reminder at the end of the game that you were only supposed to recon the area; not go charging in - but the thought never really crosses your mind as a player), the game's simply filled with a lot of much smaller touches, some of which the devs pointed out in interviews after release, that really pull the experience together tremendously well.
There's the level design with its symbolism scattered around the place; there's its gameplay mechanics, which don't change over the course of the game at all, but the player's willingness to perhaps use them do (the executions you can perform as a melee attack are a useful tool throughout the game, but they become increasingly more violent as Walker develops as a character, straying very far away from the immediate kills or knockouts of before; and the slow motion headshots cease to be all that exciting either); there's the very subtle things that reflect Walker's state of mind, many of which certainly went unnoticed in my case (there's different meanings to how the game fades out from cutscenes to either black or white, which I highly doubt anyone noticed on their playthrough), not mention the slow change in the two side characters as well; and hell, there's even the choice of who should voice the player's character, who some genius at Yager decided had to be Nolan North, none other than Nathan Drake of the Uncharted trilogy.
So, yeah, I think it's brilliant. A merely okay shooter, yes, and therefore a game with mediocre gameplay, but it's a game masterfully designed, I feel, and what I think's especially amazing is that all these little things only feed the game's narrative and the player's experience of the game, rather than overcomplicating it.
The only other thing I would point out, which perhaps plays a part in deciding what you think about the game as a whole, is its target audience, which is of course fans of shooters. If you're intimate with those I think you can appreciate the game a great deal more for what it does. Here's a game that begins in medias res with you firing a minigun from a helicopter, a typical on-rails shooting gallery moment from your average linear shooter. A few hours later and the developers deliver a punch to the gut that changes your perspective of the game entirely, and those it's replicating the gameplay of. By the end they all but break the fourth wall through a character who asks you a brilliantly delivered question - a question I won't spoil, of course, but to which the answer is simply a sad "No" by that point - as you take an elevator to one of three pretty fucking devastating endings.
...I'ma shut up now. :-X
I've been playing RUST and it's brutally bloody brilliant game. For all of it's lack of polish, and logic that just doesn't make sense to me. I've become addicted to playing it almost non stop until I could afford to make a wooden cabin (Not the pre-fab Wooden-Shelter, but a real cabin with it's own foundation, walls, window and roof!) which needs to be made from planks, which use up a lot of wood from the trees.
Now that I have a sleeping bag to put I've stopped playing.....for now!
I have been killed by other player just four times, but mainly on other different servers.
The second I got so pissed off about this, that I ended up raiding the boxes in two shelters, that I had found left open. Yet, I tried to give back the Pick-Axe, Blood-Draw-Kit, (Just what the hell do you need blood for in this game?) Gunpowder, (But no gun!) and tried return them to the exact location where I found them when I had otherwise equipped myself. Yet, got so lost, I had problems relocating the building/structures where I found and died of starvation before I could get any further.
A lot of the other reasons for my dying, seem like such dumb mistakes on my part.....
It might have been just didn't travel far enough to find enough food grazing in the grass or taking on bear or wolf before worked out how to fire at them while running backwards with a bow and arrow in my hand.
Though, I don't understand why I can option rare items from killing the wolves and bears and even more rare items from their mutated counterparts.
Also dying from a bleeding wound taken from falling or the above mentioned wandering predators. Wether, I could prepare for this before (Like having food (It's always chicken, no matter what animal it's taken from!) and camp-fire set-up or in my inventory before-hand) I start hurting too badly and then dying.
I would often build the most ruditmentary of bases right at the top of those rocky places and forget how to relocate them and then start building all over again somewhere else.
I remember one time, when I had survived about three or four nights after leaving wooden shelters, surrounded by wooden walls and filled them with a work-bench, a forge or kiln and left storage-boxes on the top of foundations because that game server wouldn't allow me to put them anywhere safer. I had amassed a lot of wood from the wood piles and trees, and a lot of various types of stone and got killed by a bear I couldn't shoot properly.
On one server the four legged animals were virtually non-existent and I just died from their lack of involvement in my game. I now realise that I was meant to just hunt other players on that one.
While, I'm setting up my base...(Something that I am most admittedly very slow at...) I do try to avoid other players and will just collect or hunt for resources while sneaking in the long grass if I hear a lot of gunshot or see them hunting animals or each other. It's best to avoid the settlements and other peoples building. Otherwise they will find me and shoot me for resource gathering on what they perceive to be their own territory. In this game, I thinks it's basically anything that it's watched, tied downed or have a fence or wall around is anybodies for the taking. Of course, I would hate this happen in real life. (Or does it :o)
I would find the most resources on most game servers to be more plentiful near where they are settlements and other player's buildings/structures/guards-towers and other fortications.
Natureally..... :-\
Anyway, I have been approached by some friendly players (At least they were or were pretending to be...) who wanted to group, trade or just help and let them know I really wanted to get my shit together before I start grouping. I think it's a unwritten law that you must prove you can survive in this game while contributing to it yourself before trusting compete stranger or even people you my know in real life that play the game. I know I would turn my back on any of the people I know.
I have noticed that other players on one server where surprising friendly when I said I was lost and wanted to return some stuff I raided, but never used and couldn't find the buildings I found them in. (Mentioned earlier.) Yeah, put up with my bullshit for while and even the one that shot me in a earlier game said I sounded like descent fella. I eventually succumbed to starvation after wandering in a large area where there was no grazers.
I really want to set myself up in this game before I get to much help from others.
Right now I have that building built and for the first time I got left my sleeping bag in it. It's supposed to allow me to re-spawn there if I die. Yet, I disconnected from the game while I was in the process of starving. The cabin I built is just below some large but squat grassy hills. There doesn't appear to be any life other than trees and rocks for leages around me and I'm still completely naked.
Well, at least I will respawn back there when I die.
Some things I don't understand about the game.
Trees, remain where they are...still standing after I've chopped wood from them.
I can do this with just the starter-rock in my hand. (Yet, at least that is a step up from punching trees in Mine-Craft.)
I can carry a lot of materials, as well as very large items like wooden-planks, and other large building materials I've crafted without the use of a wagon to carry them in. That is hard to ignore.
Being able to obtain, more advance mining-implements, advanced fire-arms and blue-prints from killing wolves and bears. There is a history of this happening a lot in games that can be drawn as far back as the original Bard's-Tale series.
Yet, I understand, this game is still in Alpha or Beta and they wil be improving it and adding more stuff I hope.
Stuff, I want to see....
Ranches, where there are horses, that can be ridden and farms where there smaller animals being bred and raised for food as well as grown food.
Hi-Tech-Upgrades...like Laser weapons, power-suits and eventually cars, trucks, planes and space-ships.
Now, I go back to playing more of Elite-Dangerous...I been playing both games back to back.
Sorry about the longish post, but can't help it and I read somewhere that I'm now not really supposed to say much about games still in development, but oh well....
I think played Rust for almost 24 hrs straight....almost, before the grind of endlessly tree/stone/animal-chopping was really getting to me. But I was determined to build a safe enough base away from most of the conflict in the game.
I found mostly quiet area, a valley of flat rolling plains in between two mountain ranges dotted with clumps of stone/metal and logs of wood. Some grass-nibbling-prey-animals that always have the four legged carnivors close by keeping their numbers down.
As I would decimate them all, one by one methodically with my bow and seemlingly endless array of arrows. With not a thought towards how much I might be altering or destroying this biom with my wanton destruction of most of the animals and other resources.
At the time I was thinking...if I kept killing all the wolves and bears, the more peaceful animals would be more plentiful or if I killed all grazers, then the carnivores would (Not sure if Bears are truly carnivores, but I do know they like fish, but it's not really even considered to be meat in the true sense.) need to turn to cannibalism, the other players and start raiding towns before they would die out from their usual source of food. Anyway, this was just my thoughts.....

I loved them all and highly recommend them. The end of the second one is highly creepy and very, very Manga-esque odd.

Agreed, big F.E.A.R fan, and that ending was dark as hell.

Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death for 89p on Steam...
Typing of The Dead : Overkill is currently under a fiver on Steam.
What isn't immediately apparent, is that you can also just play it as yer standard House of The Dead : Overkill, if you don't like the concept of explodifying zombies to bits by tapping out stuff like "wonky donkey" at them.
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Army of Two: "Devil's Cartel" are currently free on Xbox 360 for the next two weeks.

Dragging this thread back from the dead.
Hardcore Zombie-fest Resident Evil HD Remaster is currently free on PS4!

DriveThruRPG has all the 2000AD stuff on sale as Mongoose is losing the license!
https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/45/Mongoose/subcategory/161_26679/2000-AD
I wonder if they chose not to renew or someone else has it now. Is Mongoose no longer owned by Rebellion? It was getting asked to write stuff for the Mongoose books (I never got round to it) that got me back into 2000ad
Another Doctor Who Humble Bundle (https://www.humblebundle.com/books/doctor-who-comics-2), although duplicating a lot of what was in the IDW one.
Looking at that, if you don't have the old IDW Who comics but like the character, that $1 tier is astonishingly good value.
Judge Dredd: Countdown Sector 106 by Tinman Games is on Steam for £1.74 until the 7th of November.

If anyone got Uplay for your PC, there's free game of Assassin Creed 3 for today only.
Not free (the service is £19.99 for a year or I think £3 or so if you just want a month at a time) but EA are adding Star Wars Battlefront and Mirror's Edge Catalyst to the vault in their XB1 EA Access service thing.
Pretty good news, both games I've been keen to play and there's now enough in the vault that the spend feels worth it to me!

Wolfenstein: Old Blood is currently £3.99 on PS4. I'm about halfway through at the moment and although the game does nothing new it's still a solid shooter. Even on the 'Normal' setting it's mad, hectic fun. Dual wielding shotguns and Automatic weapons hasn't been this much fun since Time splitters 2!

Two Humble Bundles running at the moment: Eisner Nominees (https://www.humblebundle.com/books/eisner-nominees-2017-comics) and Best of BOOM! (https://www.humblebundle.com/books/best-of-boom-book-bundle#heading-logo)
Any thoughts on these?
EDIT: I grabbed the Eisner one anyway, given that I've not read them. The BOOM! one has loads of overlap with other HBs I already have.

Dragon Age Inquisition + All DLC is £3.99 in a PS4 digital sale
Mass Effect: Andromeda is £5.99
Both are excellent RPGs and a lot of fun. Don't be put off by bad press over Andromeda. It suffered for not being a direct sequel to ME4, but it is a tops fund game with shooty guns and RPG questing. I preferred Inquisition as it has some more rounded characters to play with, mind.

Speaking of Humble Bundle though, they do have a bundle of PC board games currently which seems great for getting a board game fix during lockdown. There are a couple of games I've played and enjoyed in there (Mysterium and Carcassone) and at least one that I've always wanted to have a go at (Scythe).

I acquired a free copy of Rebellions "Evil Genius" but it's bugged! ( I think) You have to capture a maid and interrogate her to gain information to teach your minions to be servants.
Well I capture the maid... get her locked in a cell.... instruct a minion to start interrogation and.... she's looe and wandering around the island. So now I can't make any damn progress ...
Some great retro stuff going cheap on PSN at the moment, I picked up the following for less than €15:

- Castlevania symphony of the night / Rondo of blood

Oh yes... interrogation room built, interrogation chair purchased. ... she just... escapes!

It's better than good. It adapts all the fourth (most recent) expansions which - and I know from experience - take up more space than any table can handle, then has even more digital only expansions.

I have it on PC, so you're talking Steam sale discounts.
One annoying thing is the way it randomises all dice rolls at the start of the game (it creates a table of a million or so numbers at the outset and then reads that). But it is fun. We play digital more than physical.

I enjoyed it but it is more an RPG these days.
I'm just wrapping up a playthrough of AC Valhalla. It's a laugh but it's far from a landmark game.
If you like huge open world games then it's good fun. If you like vikings it's also good fun. If you want to wander around doing all the side quests etc you can easily sink 200 hours into it although things do get a bit repetitive. There's a lot of RPG-lite elements to it that you wouldn't have seen in earlier games: in fact it's nothing like AC III and there's very little focus on actually assassinating anyone. You can stealth into enemy bases and stuff, but equally you can do the whole game just by charging in and killing everybody in a straight up fight. I've had a lot of fun with it, but definitely a case of ymmv.
Cheers lads, no fear of RPG's here.
For €30 I will give it a shot - need something meaty to tide me over until the new Horizon Zero Dawn game drops below the current €80 price tag!
