Title: Recommend me some PC Games??
Post by: bluemeanie on 14 May, 2009, 03:45:47 PM
Got a new pc this week. First new one in YEAAAARS.
So as a result all the cool pc games I havent been able to play in ages are now available to me, many as reduced prices due to being a year or more old.

So can anyone recommend me some good ones? Ideally (and yeah, this is shallow) cool looking ones as I am currently in love with my new graphics cards lovliness.

Ones so far have been Wolverine Uncaged which rocks and Watchmen, which I'm kinda playing just to piss Alan Moore off   :D

and before you say, already have Dredd vs Death for the pc and Rogue Trooper on the wii

The Orange Box which is basically the Half Life 2 series plus the wonderful Portal and Crysis which looks and plays beautifully (though ruins itself once the aliens arrive...)

Empire: Total War is great and hugely addictive, and Dawn of War 2 is also pretty cool.

Also, Dead Space is nice and creepy.

Drokk all that!

Give your life to World of Warcraft!

Creepy?
Hmmm.... think my pc might be a little too good for creepy. As I said on another thread I was bad enough playing AvP when it first came out and while it was good it wasnt TOO realistic. Not sure I want photorealistic horror. That said, might give it a look.

And is Half Life 2 good? I heard it wasnt as cool as the first which I loved. And yeah, heard all kinds of good things about how beautiful Crysis looks.

Just need stuff to kill time till Arkham Asylum comes out really  ;)

And no go on World of Warcraft. I have a graphic novel thing to try and write and a wife who would kick my head in if I became an 8hr a night gamer. Heard that stuff is too addictive. Loved the South Park ep though

Hey, I'm right with you on the writing thing! It's horrible addictive, but I limit myself to a couple of nights a week at it, and in the middle of writing something I don't go near it at all... hardly.

I'm also waiting for Arkham on the 360... and Guitar Hero Metallica.

Crysis is indeed supposed to be the best looking game of recent times. Too good for my machine to play!

I would buy Stalker: Clear Sky if I were you. Despite the minor glitches (enemy grenades always land on your shoes!) I have enjoyed it more than most games I've played for ages. The day/night cycle and radiation zone you explore look and feel amazing.

If you want to play against/with other people then Left4Dead is some awesome zombie action.

And Half Life 2 has great storytelling as well as shooting/driving.

I've often wanted a go on World of Warcraft. It's the kind of game I like. The extra cost of online gaming turns me off though (I just can't afford it.) Sure I could play the trial, but I feel a bit dishonest doing that with no intention of taking it further. Not that I'm not willing to purchase, a game, I just like to think once I've bought it that's it ALL paid for.

(That being said I probably would fork out once I get a job and have some disposable income. The way things are going I doubt that will be any time soon.)

I saw the Age of Conan  going incredibly cheaply at sendit.com for £2.89. (Ok, that was just yesterday. It's gone up to £7.89 now, which is still very cheap. It's cheaper at play though.) It turns out to be another online game, so I assume there is more to pay online. (I found the official site, and couldn't find much information on the monthly fee. No doubt it's around somewhere though.)

Ooh yeah, another vote for BIOSHOCK, it is brilliant, brilliant and lovely!

And steam is a great platform.

Bioshock is a must; Steam had a special internet only offer for no less than £3 several months back. It's worth checking Steam out on a regular basis as they have some cracking offers.

I'd say The Orange Box is also a must and Left 4 Dead is fun although a little short-lived unless you play online. Fallout 3 looked spangly, but I couldn't get it to work on my system. Oh well.

Half life 2 is so, so wonderfully good. The graphics on the original HL2 may be showng their age a little bit now but by the time you get to HL2, Episode 2 (I know, it's confusing) they're almost as good as anything around. The story telling is amazing though, as is the physics gun. I reckon you'd pick it up really cheap now too.

Getting a patch now that'll hopefully sort it so fingers crossed

I'm a sucker for Sid Meir's Civilization IV and it's various expansions, also Age of Empires III. It's mainly because they can both be played on quite easy settings - I'm too old and befuddled to play action games (I mean I truly suck! I tried Dredd vs Death but after half an hour of shoot-the-floor/shoot-the-sky/shoot-the-floor/shoot-the-sky/die I gave up)

Just on the offchance anyone else has the Bioshock/Vista problem, I did a bit of researching and these are the settings you need

The Realtek sound is set to stereo
The audio settings in Bioshock are set to Pro Logic
Reverb and Creative EAX Audio are both turned on.

Warhammer:DOW I & II
Age of Empires The Warcheifs
Lego Rock Raiders
Day of the Tentacle
Grim Fandango
Empire Total War

Some good recommendations.

I hereby throw my votes behind:

Bioshock - fabulously rich immersive environment, by turns it becomes genuinely scary, funny and macabre. Has the soul of System Shock 2, and if you've got the hardware to do it justice, it looks beautiful too.

The Orange Box - what's not to like?
*Half Life 2 *is* as good, if not better than the original (and I lived, slept, breathed and ate that thing).
*Portal - ignore anything you've read or heard, just go into it without preconception and you will love it. Funniest game I have played in years.
*Team Fortress 2 - best multiplayer PC FPS since the original Half Life. Absolutely superb, and (possibly because of the deliberately "unrealistic" nature of the graphics) it doesn't seem to attract the screeching, howling mouth-breathers who will assault your both your ears with their incessant, whiny, pre-pubescent swearing, and your brain with their inability to carry out even the simplest of tasks. The great community around TF2 is what sets it head and shoulders above others in the genre. It's also about as finely balanced a game as you'll find, no classes truly dominate, everyone has a counter.

Left 4 Dead - excellent, but it's pretty much *all* multiplayer. Atmostpheric though, so if you're a fan of zombie movies, you'll enjoy it greatly.

Mass Effect - very, very good, highly recommended if you're an RPG fan. Lots of backstory to keep your interest between firefights. Small downside is that it looks as if it were designed for a console (which it was)

Fallout 3 - I'm torn. On the one hand, I've got many hours of play on this. It's excellent. Really, really good. I've had a lot of enjoyment out of it....
...but. But. BUT. It's a mind-boggling mess of bugs and glitches. It's been out now for more than six months, and *still* isn't patched to stability for all users. It's currently in disgrace, here on my shelf, having crashed to desktop five times in one evening - with no rhyme, reason or pattern. Just "Whoops, oh dear, that's another half hour wasted".

Bethesda seem more concerned with shoving the DLC packs out of the door than they are with fixing fundamental flaws in the original game. For the record, they've issued three lots of chargeable DLC. Every one has been bugged - in some cases, bugged to the point of being entirely unplayable. Buyer beware.

...but I do still love it. Even buggy, glitchy and soul-destroying, it's a cracking game.

The best of the lot, if you could only choose one? Bioshock. Well, or Orange Box. Probably. Or...erm...both of them. I think that you should be able to pick them up for peanuts these days anyway.

Enjoy.
J.

Well as per advice I dug out Bioshock and replayed the first hour with the graphics on their highest settings.... think I liked it more when it was chuggy and not so "real" looking.
I am SUCH a girl with games! Played for an hour and had to stop as my shoulders were hurting from tensing up the whole time.
Stunning looking but DAMN creepy. Loving it.

Bioshock is a great game, it looks fantastic and the weapons mixed with powers is a cool idea, but I had to give up when it got too frustrating to fight the Big Daddys. Maybe I was doing something wrong, or missing a weakness, but my exchanges with them basically went; 1) Get a few shots off, 2) Get killed by one shot, 3) Wake up in regeneration booth, 4) Go to 1), and repeat with dimishing ammo and patience.  I'll try it again sometime.

Absolutely. Electroshock then explosives/bullets, then run away around a corner, not in a straight line because of the shoulder charges.
I found the first Big Daddy WAY harder than any of the others. Maybe because you have limited weapon options the first time.

Being single I spend most of my free time playing computer games.

QuoteEmpire: Total War is great and hugely addictive, and Dawn of War 2 is also pretty cool.

Agreed! Just recently I had gone to trouble downloading the demo for "Dawn Of War Two" and realised my four and half year old computer is just under specs. I'm quite happy playing the regular game and it's expansion and mods.

QuoteI would buy Stalker: Clear Sky if I were you. Despite the minor glitches (enemy grenades always land on your shoes!) I have enjoyed it more than most games I've played for ages. The day/night cycle and radiation zone you explore look and feel amazing.

I have the first version of this game, although I recently wiped it from my computer to make space. I would gladly reinstall it in a flash. I was sort of more interesting than most other First person shooters I have played. Thre some more realism here and I like the idea of walikng around with a loaded weapon, while swigging vodka to ward offf the effects of radiation while shooting mutant boars. Though I was getting confounded with that farm I recently. After initially taking it the first time around. It would often fall back into the hands of the rival faction. Even after allies would appaer to take up position around the place. I would more often than not return from HG to find their corpse littering the place as I had to fight reinforcement of the enemy trying to take the palce back off me. Despite this and the strange way that throwing a grenade into room full of apparently normal looking rival soldiers -- I think there were seven of them --   that did not  even slow them down when they ran outside to give me chase. -- that was at the outpost down the road if you know the game area. I enjoyed the story that was unfolding in the game. I would love to watch the film this was based on.

Quotesaw the Age of Conan going incredibly cheaply at sendit.com for £2.89. (Ok, that was just yesterday. It's gone up to £7.89 now, which is still very cheap. It's cheaper at play though.) No doubt it's around somewhere though.)

I  though You obviously don't want to go near any of online RPG's. I might still suggest "Warhammer : Age of Reckoning" and "Age of Conan" which still looks interesting and would only cost me eleven dollars retail and twenty dollars a month.

The only thing is that my computer is still under specs for these two games. I tried downlaoding the trial for the first one a month agao,a nd found that it reuired some hardware moy computer doesn't have. and "Age of Coan" will not patch without giving me a error. Age of Coman. The horse riding aspects of this game appaers more realsitc from what I have seen of the developer videos.

Otherwise . I might suggest. Spore.

I play it and get a kick out of being able to create aliens, buildings, spaceships, and other vechicles in the game editors and seeing them work in game. It's good for bit of fun.

I've got a legit free copy of Half Life 2 if you want it.

I bought HL2 when it came out, then bought the Orange Box. Hence, I have two HL2s. One can be "gifted" from my Steam account to anyone of my choosing.

PM me if you fancy it. You can then try before you buy.

To be honest, though, you can't go wrong with the whole Orange Box.

Ah, The Shutdown Man beat me to it - after waxing lyrical about TF2, "Meet the Spy (//http://kotaku.com/5257925/meet-the-spy-quite-the-ladies-man)" is the perfect illustration of the humour built into the game. Absolutely laugh out loud funny (do not read before viewing the video!):-

The great thing about TF2 is that it's contantly being updated. New maps, weapons and gameplay modes are brought out every few months, so even two years after the game came out, it's still kept fresh.

And of course, the "Meet the team" videos are classic. Possibly my fav, "Meet the Sniper": //http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyNuriXG3BQ

My recommendations....

Rogue Trooper isn't new but is worth a look.

Bioshock, as has been already said.

The Orange Box has been mentioned countless times, personally I'm not too hot on Portal, but i like Team Fortress 2.

Call of Duty:World at War.  A great WWII fps, especially among a WWII saturated market.  Great atmosphere and well worth getting and playing.

Call of Duty 4:Modern Warfare.  This is in some ways better than World at War.  The multiplayer component is good.

World in Conflict.  If you like RTS's this is a great game, the gold edition is easy to find relatively cheaply.

Mass Effect, no more needs to be said.

How did you get on with those Big Daddies Shutdown man?

I've read the preview for Bioshock 2 in PC Gamer and considering how much I enjoyed the original I am not that excited by it. It just looks like more of the same and they gave away a lot of the story in the preview.
Plus I don't really want to go back to having to interact with the little sisters. Perhaps because I have a little daughter but I couldn't suspend my disbelief and had to protect all of them, any time any of them got injured I would reload!

Post by: ThryllSeekyr on 20 May, 2009, 05:58:02 AM
Since the this weekend I been using the other computer. To give mine a rest and I have dug out two old games.

AVP Gold Edition.

I reinstalled it and booted it up and was surprised --after not playing this game for nearly ten years-- that the single player campiagn starts you off as a Alien drone. Not so easy to use after all this time. Surrounded by the Egyptian like archictecture of some alien temple. The walls all around me showing no way out except for this organically smooth passageway ahead of me. Beyond that is another room, that requires alot of wall/ceiling scrambling, to find a entrance to a small conduit/shaftway that drops down into smaller chamber with two other passage ways. It goes on, and on. My cartograpghy skills fail to help me when I lose trakc of what is up from down. I gave up when I realised I had travelled around the same ant-chamber once without knowing.  The fast forward movement of the alien is hard to get used to and on this computer it seemed to jump forward and sop for abit, rather than run smoothly.

I then tried out the Skirmish mode using Predator. Then learnt allover again that those fancy weapons can only be accessed in a separate vision modes. I took down few Alien drones, before falling to the eventual swarm and I still hadn't figured out how to activate the self-destruct device. The lighting for both aliens and Predators in all their vision modes still seems rather limiting. For the moment, I lack the patientence to play this old game properly.

I also reinstalled

Warrior Kings: Battles.

Sold under the "Big Bytes" and "Red Ant" label brought cheaply for about nine dollars. I had this one for awhile before I dug it out again. A Medieval RTS, I've never played the full single campaign. As I'm not that patient with it, but have fully explaored the skirmish maps. In which I have taken the path all the way for Rennaisance, Imperial and Pagan. It's different because you don't make this choice at the beginning of each game, but as you play and choose buildings from the in game menu.  Either way, you start out the same with a Manor surrounded by a stick fence and four workers. From then on in.... you can build Villiges, Farms, Trading posts, Watch-Towers, providing you do build them a short, but separate distance from the Manor building that acts as the treasury, repository for food, wood, iron, gold, money. Without which you cannot purchase other buildings and the other units available to you now and later on in the game. You also lode the game when thsi building falls, unles you have built more than one. --I not sure you can do that in this game-. These are either carried by the workers themselves, or in a horse drawn cart your provided with when you build a village and the one that came with the Manor. You can purchase more of these to speed up funds. There are also buildings that can be built on the Manor grounds. Like the Barracks, Stables, Taverns --where you can hire Mercenary's--. Blacksmithy, Mercantile warehouse. The list does go on. shops can be built in villages and on Manor grounds. They are good for producing money on the spot, without having to mine for it or trade.

As I said earlier, their are other buildings that can be chosen that will lead you downt he path of Medieval Scientists, God fearing Knights or Nature worshippers.

I think it's Libary/Univercity for Rennaisance. Church for Imperial and Maypole for Pagans. Actualley, now that I have written it down here, it's really just that simple. Choosing one of these, closes two other doors to all the other options.

It's a nice looking game, even if the graphics are alittle dated. They are still well detailed and look cool when zoomed right in close to them. The actual contruction animations involve the raising of wooden scaffolding as the building, magically rises out of the ground. Not quite right, but somehow still effective.

Thee waging of war requires more mettle. What I basically know about this is that if your using footmen against riders, make sure they have pole arms. Archers fire their arrows further when on higher ground and will need a munitions wagon if they are fighting a long battle. Babarians are useless, unless you have hordes of them.

I have a tendecency to make all female labourers, farmers and miners, store clerks. The males are given scouting  and woodsmen duties. sometimes I make exceptions to this rule. I know alot of you would disagree with me. Otherwise, it seems like a arrangement that makes sence to me.

I succumbed to temptation and installed the trial version of World of Warcraft a couple of nights back. (If I like the game, and I ever get a job with plenty of income I might still register as a main user though.)  I was a tad disappointed with the graphics as the game seems to put me into a lower resolution than normal, and the graphics (while not bad) are hardly the crisp graphics you see in screen-shots and footage. I'm not sure if that's because it's an earlier version of the game without the updates (Lich King etc) or if it's my own computer set up (a laptop to be fair. Kind of entry level now, but still a dual core.)

I haven't gotten very far yet, and I've already been killed a few times.

One problem is my controls. My current mouse doesn't work (not sure why, but I've dropped it a few times, so I think that's something to do with it) so I've been  using the graphics tablet. I've gotten used to it for normal stuff, but it does strange things seemingly over sensitive for the game. I.e. you target a spider then somehow end up staring at the ceiling or ground while the spider attacks you. Also 'attack' doesn't always seem to work leaving you standing there while you're slowly killed. (I think I probably should have levelled up a bit too, killed a few more hogs and tigers before tackling the giant bugs. I did kill a couple of bugs quite easily though... so not sure whats happening there.)

Part of the issue is, when you ressurrect after dying, you're in a weak state, and right in the thick of the monsters that killed you in the first place.  Running back gets irritating after a while. My spirit come up near this angel 'spirit healer' thing which I thought was supposed to resurrect me more quickly but I can't figure out how to get that bit to work, so I end up resurrecting myself the long way.

One trick I used was the shadow meld spell to hide myself while I heal shortly after resurrecting, but I've noticed that doesn't always work. The bugs sometimes see through it after a while....

Problems aside, I can see it as an enjoyable enough game, something I could really get into. It's mainly a matter of getting used to everything. I'm used to using a console controller for my games nowadays.

Already got it on the wii
Was really into it till there was a bit where I had to keep this girl alive while she ran at EVERY FRIGGING ZOMBIE within a 20 mile radius. After an hour of her dying on me I kinda got so pissed off I didnt go back to it.
My two big turn offs in games

1) Keep idiot alive while they try their best to die

2) You only have 5 minutes to do this bit and we put in enough false turns and dead ends that you have to keep re-doing it till you find the one perfect route to get you there in time

QuoteI was a tad disappointed with the graphics as the game seems to put me into a lower resolution than normal,

Change the video settings in the pause menu.

Dunno about your controls though- sounds like you're holding the left mouse button to me- you need to hold that button down to look around and it sounds like this is what you're describing.

QuoteMy spirit come up near this angel 'spirit healer' thing which I thought was supposed to resurrect me more quickly but I can't figure out how to get that bit to work, so I end up resurrecting myself the long way.

If you right click (I think it's right...) on the spirit healer, you'll be asked if you want to ressurect there- but this looses you a load of life and mana.

QuoteSTAY AWAY FROM CONAN its awfull

I' have downloaded the ten day trial for this game about nearly two months ago now and I have not been able to get past the rather large patch that needs to be updated each time you boot up/logg into the game.

The game does look sort of impressive and alittle better than most other online RPG's. Saw some footage of a melee battle. Thought it looked interesting, myself. Although, the people reveiwing the game were'nt really pleased with it either. Something to do with gameplay being made more complicated through the patches, I think.

QuoteI succumbed to temptation and installed the trial version of World of Warcraft a couple of nights back.

I played the trial and quite enjoyed it.

QuotePart of the issue is, when you ressurrect after dying, you're in a weak state, and right in the thick of the monsters that killed you in the first place. Running back gets irritating after a while. My spirit come up near this angel 'spirit healer' thing which I thought was supposed to resurrect me more quickly but I can't figure out how to get that bit to work, so I end up resurrecting myself the long way.

I think your spirit rises at the nearest graveyard and for the price of some XP. You can resurrect on the spot, right there. I think a spirit healer -- The thing that looks like a angelic ghost -- does this for you or you can find your own  body and ressurect at the site of your death free of charge.

Though, I'm unsure if having this done in the graveyard gets all of their equipment back. You may lose afew items.
I think there is always a XP cost for this and his can get very expencive -- You can really feel the pinch-- if your character's of very high level.

Night Elves always rise as those Wisp things and I'm not sure if they have graveyards.

QuoteMy spirit come up near this angel 'spirit healer' thing which I thought was supposed to resurrect me more quickly but I can't figure out how to get that bit to work, so I end up resurrecting myself the long way.

I think you can text it, talk to it like any other game controlled character. Just click on it. I think there should always be a box there whenever you mouse scroll the cursor over it.

That might be whats wrong with your MOUSE controller.

QuoteOne trick I used was the shadow meld spell to hide myself while I heal shortly after resurrecting, but I've noticed that doesn't always work. The bugs sometimes see through it after a while....

I loved having that ability with my night Elf Druid. Once I had my character at a sufficeintly higher enough level. I used that power quite alot for similer reasons. Running from large wild cats and bears in the dark woods near a coastal port town on a the continent neigbouring Night Elves gigantic tree stump of a continent. I had my character fly there on the back of a Griffin. There was a trail close to a old burial ground continent where they all those banshees and other undead. I once made my way to lands close to the Ork's capital city. There is a place, a old castle or some fortication right by the seaside, occupied by some human militia controlled by the game itself. About half way between the Orc capital city asnd the Orc starting village. It's right next to a small group of ship wrecks that can be explored underwater. I thought the underwater combat with the those mutant crab creatures is very well handled and good fun if you can remember to come up for air. Though the real fun was sneaking around that old fortication, slaying militia using stealth, making my way inside. Using shadowmeld to lay in wait undetected. Making surprise attacks on low level orc players doing their starting quests. Using the Natures wrath! Thats fun. But I got caught once and was followed. I think I moved while shadowmelded and was spotted and eventualley taken down. I also had a duel with Minotaar Druid of slightly higher level but not possessing shadowmeld. I still lost the battle, but I made it more interesting with the NE racial advantages over theirs.

I also had a Gnome mage who also l got to a descent level and had fun simplely completing some of low level human quests -- That it could still do at it's higher level.-- in their starting town. The one with a kobold problem in the underound mines, with a Church, and the nearby farm claimed by bandits. All protected by a wall where ther are some city guards. Anyway, I had this one spell thast would zap and instanly drop every low level criiter/creep in the near vicinity. Which was fun to show off with in that starting area.

I ran out of time when my Druid was about to complete their Aquadic abilities quest. Something to do with being able to take the shape of a Sea-Lion.

True, true true.

That might be the case for alot of games, they do take up time.

But what would you be rather doing you were sick in bed or hospitlised, other reading books, comics, drawing, writing, sleeping and other social pursuits.

I've just spent the last five hours, and a good chunk of the last few days, playing...

Plants vs Zombies!!

This is off Steam, and by Pop Cap (the folks behind Peggle). It is bloody good. Runs on an old PC and is very moreish - each level takes no more than 5 minutes. It's basically a tower defence game. Except you use plants instead of cannons. And fight zombies.

You're right, I'm past that now.  I did do that but it didn't work for a while. As for the mouse thing, I'm sure you're right. Or more specifically it reacts to sensitively with my tablet.

I'm really enjoying it now and playing it too much. Wanted to make the most of it during the trial period.

There was a weird bug earlier today. The login screen kept sending me back to my windows desktop. It continued to run in the background though, it just wouldn't allow me on for more than a second or two! I restarted my PC and that sorted it though. I've notice the other odd bug here and there but it largely a great game othewise.

Try Alien Infestation. It's clearly based on the premice of Alien/s the movie! The ones that creep around luna based facitites and space stations, covering walls, floors and ceilings in their mucus, attacking various colonists, medical staff, commanders, troopers, robots, bartenders, bio-ologists by surpirse and at times mutating into tougher aliens. The queen is nigh unstoppable.

I could go on forever about the merits of this game, but I will just leave you with this picture, screenshot and link.

The 3 NEWEST XCOM games are very good ( aftermath etc ), after a brief stint in 3rd person they went back to the origional excellent format with good updates(aftermath etc)

MOUNT AND BLADE

OK, world map graphics are ancient and old and cheap,
gameplay is limited to hack, slash, parry and shield, commands to troops are wait, follow or charge.

There is no MULTIPLAYER AT THE MOMENT, theres a release soon of a expansion pack to allow multiplayer online.

There's no story, theres no video's/films there are no audio voices its text only.

Its like an unfinished 5 year old game

BUT

THIS IS THE BEST GAME I'VE PLAYED IN MONTHS, first play i couldnt get away from my PC for 8 hours straight i've never done that before.

Its an RPG with all the usual skill up, new weapons, armour and mounts etc in a basic world map, help destroy the enemy,
the battles are staged in a 3d real time enviroment with you controlling your character, and you can issue commands to your army if you have one. Chase bandits or Lay seige to a castle with seige engines its great.

Your a mounted knight, pick your weapons crossbow/spear/bow/sword/pike etc its you against multiple enemy's fight them mounted or unmounted. You can raise your own army train them fight them.
