General / Scramble 2000 AD T-shirts
08 December, 2016, 02:00:58 PM
So here are the designs for the Scramble Dredd T-shirts. Look good to me, especially the Henry Flint one.

Looking at the photos I am guessing the quality is far superior to other 2000AD T-shirts, which IMO have been appalling quality and cut. (Always seem to come in two sizes: leotard or tent.)

I think the cost is fair for decent quality Ts.

News / ABC Warriors getting hardback release
21 April, 2014, 10:29:01 PM
"From the scrap-heaps of Earth to the war-torn plains of Mars, the ABC Warriors are legendary British comic book 2000 AD's disaster squad of distinction! With break-through early work from Simon Bisley and Kevin O'Neill, this hardback collection is a start of a new series collecting up all the ABC Warriors stories in a highly collectable format...

at the same over-size format as the they were first printed. It also includes, for the first time, the original colour centre spreads..."

Colour spreads. Now, we are talking!

Film & TV / Alan Moore on BBC HARDtalk
10 April, 2012, 04:40:10 PM
"Alan Moore is the man behind the mask, the mask worn by computer hackers and Occupy protestors the world over. But he's no typical insurgent, rather a graphic novelist. It was he who dreamt up the anarchist superhero with the ghostly, bearded mask, whose face has now become perhaps the symbol for subversion. Alan Moore has, in the past, championed graphic novels (book-length comics) for their effect on politics and culture. Why, in that case, is he now becoming disillusioned?"

"...a load of collected Spider-man stories is not a novel."

Film rights: "money for old rope."

Check it out!

Books & Comics / Becky Cloonan comics
02 September, 2010, 12:54:41 AM
Has anyone read any comics by Becky Cloonan?

I had never heard of her until last weekend when I popped in to Orbital Comics in London. They had a small exhibition of her original art. Stunning stuff.

This is still up on the now defunct Dark Horse MySpace site.

Exhib is over but here is the flyer:

Anybody bought Turf? I picked it up this weekend and have only read a few pages. Intriguing stuff so far and I rate the art. Very text heavy so some of the panels seem quite busy. There will be variant covers by Jim Steranko and Duncan Fegredo. I heard of this from this weekend's Guardian magazine in which Jonathon Ross was flying the flag for the cause of comics.

Books & Comics / First Superman comic sells for $1m
23 February, 2010, 01:16:34 AM
"A copy of the first comic to feature caped hero Superman has been sold on the internet for $1m (£646,000)."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8529504.stm

No doubt this has been done before round these parts, but what is the most valuable comic you possess?

I have ROM no.1 and The Human Fly no.1.

Some interesting stuff on Stan the Man Lee's blog, pilgrims. Must say, I like some of the old school graphics.

Eg, like, WTF?

"I believe this is Jack's original design for Spider-Man before I stuck a hyphen in the name and gave the project to Ditko to do over! I musta signed off on this one before Jack turned in his legendarily rejected pages."

Links / Some alternative 2000AD history
12 May, 2009, 12:04:20 AM
Don't know if this has been mentioned round these parts (apologies if it has) but I recently came across the Comic Vine website. Worth checking it out I reckon.

Interesting to see the covers of the Eagle, 'Quality' and Fleetway 2000AD reprints for the US market which I don't see on Barney. (I say nick their images Wake as it seems that they have nicked Barney's.)

I think the first Eagle Comics versions were excellent with brilliant original covers by 2000AD greats. The cover designs, while nothing groundbreaking were solid and well considered. I have all of them I think.

Then the comics moved to Quality Comics and Fleetway and I think it is fair to say that things went downhill to say the least. Some very, very ropey front covers there. I gave up after the Eagle Comics period. The Quality Comics have to be some of the most poorly produced comics ever. I remember the bad quality printing and stretched internal artwork. Criminal.

The Nemesis reprints were a treat as Kevin O'neill added frames to the internal artwork for the taller format of the reprints. And his covers were outstanding.

Spellbinders? What on Earth were they thinking?

The site is not intuitive so worth clicking around and using the search box for different 2000AD related stuff.
