Title: 'crap' movies and TV series you love
Post by: Conexus on 21 January, 2006, 04:27:51 AM
Based on the thread on the Dune movie, where there where people actually saying they liked it- what movies and/or TV series  do you love that conventional 'wisdom' say are male bovine excrement?

me i like friends, and even Will and Grace sometimes, though with latter there are limits.

Joey - it gets funnier as it goes on.  Honest.
The Rock - Sean Connery and Nic Cage with Michael Bay?  Unmissable.
Scorpion King - The Rock, unmissable.

Far too many to name really.

The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase ... amazing when your a kid, painful now, but i still love it.

i have a soft spot for the american version of the office. i got very home sick one night in canada and this was the closest thing i could find to uk tv on the LAN.

i agree with Joey too, remarkable funny and touching at times. same with Two and a Half Men, can be quite good at times. i#ll watch it if no one is arround to mock me.

Jazz singer with neil diamond

My girlfriend's favourite ever movie.

I have loads. Suppose the most embarassing is George of the Jungle. It's brilliant.

There's an old National Lampoon film called Class Reunion that also falls in this category.

I really like Undead,Braindead,all the japanese monster movies - godzilla,rodan etc,Streets of Fire,Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires,The Rocketeer,The Phantom,The Shadow & Eight-legged Freaks.
For tv series you can't beat 70's cheese = Tomorrow People,Dr Who & The Water Margin.
The all-time crappest movie I like is Plan 9 From Outer Space - it really is terrible but strangely compelling.

I don't think it's fair to put Who from the 70's in. I like the 80's Doctors but the 70's was of a higher standard.

I was watching bits of Mallrats the other day and really enjoyed it. I love that film. I'm also inordinatley fond of Mystery Men. That's the film. I don't have a yen for men with no name.

Theres nothing crap about it. It's kind of pointless watching the episodes that use the same scripts as UK ones, as they're never going to compare favorably, but once you get to the original material it really comes into it's own.

The Sylvester McCoy Doctor Whos.

Just got Ghost Light on Ebay after it's recent mention on the board. Incomprehensible, as I was warned, but the Doctor/Ace relationship is strangely touching and the whole thing has a kind of dignity currently missing from yadda yadda yadda...

DEATH DIMENSION!

A deadly freeze bomb threatens humanity and only Jim Kelly (Enter the dragon) the Kung Fu cop can save us all. Also featuring Harold (Odd Job) Sakarta as the villain and George Lazenby (James Bond) as the police chief!

Along the way there's time for a car chase, a boat chase and a helicopter chase - with dynamite!

2016: AFTER THE FALL OF NEW YORK is also fantastic.

One of my all-time favourite movies is a little-heard-of comedy called Brain Donors, which is basically a Marx Brothers-style movie in a modern setting (well, the 90s). I think I'm the only person on Earth who loves this movie!

Oh, and I usually watch Neighbours, if only for Harold Bishop, though I wouldn't say I 'loved' it (or him).

Also, the Doc Savage: Man of Bronze film is aces, totally lame, plus any and all of those 50s/60s dinosaur/cavemen films. Particularly if Raquel Welch was involved.

That happens a lot less often with Richard and Judy...

Prince of Darkness is ace! Ok, so none of the occult, SF and Eric Von Daniken elements actually bond together that well in practice, but what a mix! Also theres something superbly creepy about the dreams ("We are transmitting to you from the year one nine nine nine...")

Prince of Darkness (like Lifeforce, Hawk the Slayer, and Horror Express) is crap - come on, we're old enough to admit it, and it doesn't stop it from being ace in any way.  Especially the bit with the mirror and the hand.
The flip-side of such movies are po-faced affairs like Sixth Sense, which are deadly serious, not fun at all, and after you've watched them once - why bother with watching them again?

Alone in the Dark is ARSE.

I will watch anything, I quite enjiyed Doom, as it was exactly the film I expected.  But AITD is just poo, not scary, not exciting with shoddy special effects.

A Sound of Thunder is not too bad, but there are some hysterically bad CGI for a big Hollywood movie.

The Rock is genius - I didn't know conventional wisdom disliked it.

The American Godzilla movie with Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno and, errr, Godzilla. I liked it and thought that one of the great injustices was that Independence Day (which was complete shit apart from one scene) made a fortune whereas Godzilla, which wasn't crap, was a flop of historic proportions.

In the trailer for Battie Begins we have our veritable Bruce Wayne exchanging dialogue with Alfred on such a topic. Bruces own comment being that it makes and I quote; "Damn fine television."

So whether he is a thrillseeker or not, remains to be seen.

By me.This is why I assumed he may have slept with countless women. This does make me look like someone who sees the preying on women as a thrill though. Which I am, and should point out on realising this that I do not intend on doing it over the internet.

Yeah. That looks like one of those crap moments in a film you cannot help but love.

I enjopyed the film Soldier with Kurt Russell which is universally known to be a stinker and thought the Blair witch project was superb. Does that count?

Hi-De-Hi was great stuff, somewhat dismissed I feel for it's use of silly slapstick, people in daft costumes etc, though that is rather the point: That's what passed for entertainment on the holiday camps. The pathos and character comedy especially around Jeffrey Fairbrother and Gladys Pugh was totally believable stuff. Definitely falls into the 'Dads Army' camp of Jimmy Perry series rather than the 'Are You Being Served' pantomime category.

The first movie is a really great dodgy seventies horror.  Quite atmospheric.  The second one was the big budget one (believe it or not).  The thrid one was the comedy action one.  The fourth one was made for 650,000 and is actually pretty good for reasons I won't spoil.

Just don't try to make sense out of them!

Great stuff and may still be in the Play.com sale with the cheap boxset which has good extras.

Aaah. That explains a lot. (That bit at the start where The Blonde Chick gets her face eaten is pretty grim for a comedy though). But the second one was pretty funny as well, the bit where that tentacle pops out of his head had me in stitches, as did the chainsaw fight, and the least convincing sex scene ever, and that bit in the Tall Man's dimension with that baby thing crawling out of a bin. Are you sure it's supposed to be serious?

There's some daft comedy with Reggie which is usually entertaining.  And the rest of the movies can be funny as well.

Submerged, or as I like to call it "Steven Seagal and Vinnie Jones together at last in C-Movie glory."
Resident Evil: Apocalypse - for easons I can't even fathom.
Ultimate Force - if you don't like this you are either a girl or a poofter!
Wings of the Apache - Top Gun in Helicopters!
Wrestling - "Fat sweaty men in tights, slapping each other." As Jon0101 put it.
Re-Animator 1+2 - don't know if these really count, but they have the great Jeffery Coombs in, so nyah!
The Last Boy Scout - just for the exchange:
"Just once, I want to hear you scream."

Title: Re: 'crap' movies and TV series yo...
Post by: Adrian Bamforth on 25 January, 2006, 05:32:18 AM
Yeah, I like Batman & Robin.

There's a certain amount of snobbery I feel in the Batman franchise, in that many people were surprised that Batman was dark and not just comic-book sillyness when Tim Burton started it...then eventually people are offended when a Batman film reverts back to comic-book sillyness. Batman is both these things. In fact I would argue by the time you bring Robin in, it's hardly worth taking the 'serious and dark' approach and may as well just embrace the ridiculousness of it all, something Arnie is very good at. As Mark Kermode said at the time, it's a feast for the eyes and the ears.

Haven't seen it since but I'm sure I remember if you listen closely you can hear trumpet blasts during the punch-ups during the fight scenes, a homage to the Adam West series - which is fine by me!

Personally I never bought Burton's 'dark fairy tale' interpretation of Batman - the first film is just plain boring.

ADE
Title: Re: 'crap' movies and TV series yo...
Post by: Buddy on 25 January, 2006, 06:09:42 AM
The comic book sillyness came from the Adam west series, the Shumacker (sp?) films were just a remake of the 60's series.

The Burton Bats flicks were great at the time (the second much better that the first) but have dated quite a bit. 3 & 4 stand up better against time but are just empty, just eyecandy as Kermode said.

Batman Begins, although not perfect was 'back to basics' approach to the character. A new start as it were.

Looking forward to the next one.
