Title: Mills & Skinner's ACCIDENT MAN - The Film
Post by: JOE SOAP on 17 November, 2016, 08:50:58 PM
Scott Adkins, who was recently seen in Doctor Strange, has joined the cast of Accident Man, an action title based on a character from the graphic novel by Pat Mills and Tony Skinner from the defunct monthly UK comic Toxic!.

Wagner 3 - Mills 1.

I thought it was an interesting coincidence that this guy and the actress who played the chief judge in the 2012 film both appeared in Holby, but every actor in the UK must have appeared in Holby by now. Johnny Alpha will be played by Charlie from Casualty.

Accident Man is a great idea for a film, sadly it's already been a great idea for a film on at least three separate occassions (http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/franchise/Mechanic-The#tab=summary).

Pat and Tony Skinner drew Accident Man all themselves,  did they?  I assume so, since no artist is credited as one of the strip's creators.

It was my friend the late Martin Emond who created the visual look of the character, followed in later stories by Duke Mighten.

Loved Emond's design of Accident Man which is how I always associate him as looking. Never read a lot of the later stuff, but those early stories and art were great.

I love the energy, expressiveness and humour of Martin Edmond's art, but I can't see the costume designer putting their leading man in a green catsuit (http://digitalspyuk.cdnds.net/14/07/640x914/gallery_comics-accident-man-01.jpg) and white sports socks.

They're using the girlfriend in a fridge element of the story Edmond illustrated, but they'll probably go with the Armani and Lambourghini (http://www.jaydotdee.com/poptardsgo/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Accident-Man-UK-cover.jpg) aesthetic of the Mighten era*. I haven't seen anything else the director (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0425364/#director) has done.

there was a failed attempt to make this a film a few years back starring British Karate Champion, Paul Lapsley as Mike Fallon that tried to raise funds via kickstarter but only had less then £500 pledged, but they did make a trailer

Could be fun (Scott Adkins is entertaining). Plus Button Man had some movie news a bit ago, here's to more Tooth-related and similar less mainstream thingies getting adaptations.

That trailer is awful! No wonder they couldn't get any pledges!

God, that is dreadful. Looks one of those no-budget gangster DVDs that haunt the shelves of pound shops. ESSEX TWATS III: RISE OF THE NOBHEADS, etc.

The Button Man announcement was five years ago and nothing has come of it. I thought with Nicholas Winding Refn attached it might have a chance, but evidently it was a slim one. As is the way of these things, Refn chose other projects and Button Man vanished back into development hell once again.

I genuinely thought Soap was extracting the urine with that still but, no, it really isn't Tom Cruise in JACK REACHER.

I liked the comics, so I'm looking forward to seeing this. As for the trailer, don't worry about it; a lot of good films have had terrible trailers.

That's not the trailer for this Accident Man but a previous low-budget version. The trailer hasn't been released yet.

G'wan the gaffer! By dint of Rico, we can probably award him half a point for the Stallone Dredd, so that makes 2.5 for Wagner, 1.5 for Mills and 0.75 for MacManus/O'Neill. It's still anyone's race.

Hello, cast, where are you all from?

LAAHHHNNNDAHHHHNNN, innit, right?

Are there any women about?

"Hello," waves the token woman assassin.

And how do you assassinate people?

"Well, I fuck them obviously, so I can wander around on camera in my underwear."

I actually rather liked Accident Man back in the day, but I was a teenager then. This movie looks rather uninspired – and like all the things the voiceover's saying it's not. Oh well. Maybe one to watch when it inevitably shows up on Netflix.

The voiceover feels like it was added in after someone saw Deadpool.

Yep. And feels like it was written for Jason Statham. Might have worked had it been more Crank than Generic Gritty Assassin Movie. Here's hoping the final result is better than that trailer suggests. And that token woman actually has something to do other than flash her bits for all the blokes in the audience.

I'm just impressed that a good chunk of that is straight from the comic...My main concern is that Fallon is a yuppie in the comics and a lot of the Millsian subversion comes from how he revels in his own shallowness

Looks like this is out to purchase in the US in a little over a month's time - looks like the blu-ray is region-free too: https://www.amazon.com/Accident-Man-Blu-ray-Ashley-Greene/dp/B077R48NT8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514380638&sr=8-1&keywords=accident+man+blu+ray

IMDb has it down for a February UK release, but I've no idea how accurate that list is...

5 February is a Monday, which suggests "DVD/VOD release date" rather than "in cinemas now!"

Aha. Yes. I googled "cinema releases" but, looking again, that list doesn't actually specify "cinema" anywhere on the page so I imagine you're quite correct...

Watched it yesterday while recuperating... there's some decent stuff in there that comes straight from the comic, and some less decent stuff, especially as it trails off to a muddled end.... recasting Fallon as misogynistic Brexiteer works as an update on misogynistic yuppie I suppose, but you can't help but feel we are supposed to admire the "Triumph" of his will over the EU overlords... It has made me want to read the original run, if only in tribute to Martin Emond, who shamefully gets no credit as far as I can tell, despite those best bits being literal translations of his panels.

For what it's worth, Adkins did make a point of name-checking Mills, Emond and Mighten during his slot on a recent(ish) Empire podcast. He comes across as a decent chap, who has realised a dream few of us will - to turn his favourite British comics series into a feature length film!

Is there a 'write-in' option where one might add Martin Emond to the options?
