Film Discussion / Re: Dredd (2012)

Scale will be key here!  Besides, if The Raid does well (which seems to be a forgone conclusion) and Dredd feels anything like it that will end up as a part of the critical short hand; certainly lazy, but ultimately beneficial.  As to whether or not they are really that much alike, I doubt it - the sensibility is very different; I don't expect to see much in the way of street martial arts in Dredd.

District 9 I expected due to locale and crippling poverty and overpopulation.  Children of Men however, did not come to mind.  I love that film, so if the feel has some of that, well that's alright with me!  Love Robocop!

David Tennant in the same wig. Problem solved.

Oh, I like that!

The Gyro Captain, that's the fella. By THUNDERDOME, he's found some Colgate and now has a name: 'Jedediah', if the end credits are to be believed. Despite the gnashers and the pith helmet, however, Max still recognizes him:

"You!"

Cos he stole Mad Max's car at start of third film!

Been a while since I last saw THUNDERDOME but Gibson's intonation (as I remember it) isn't just accusatory, it's one of sudden recognition.

Definitely.  And IMDB lists him as "Jedediah the Pilot", just to make it clear.

A better shot of Judge... Lex.  Nice Eagle pad!  Yes, not huge - but it is there and it is different from the left shoulder pad, so - conceptually faithful, realistically implemented.  Helmets look large because, essentially, they are doing double duty as motorcycle helmet. Which was always the idea, check Judge Fargo's old proto Judge gear which is even more explicit with the concept.

Being lactose intolerant, I find this thread wholly offensive.

On the shoulder deal, I remember thinking the Nolan Bat-suit looked pretty mehsville.  Once I saw Batman Begins, however, I found that it really worked within the reality the film portrayed - none of which skewed strictly to the comics but tonally couldn't have been more accurate.

Knowing that Nolan's work was a big influence on Dredd director Pete Travis, it's a safe bet that that's what we'll get: an alternate take on Dredd and Mega City-1 that looks different but, at it's core, is tonally 100% Dredd.

Not to nitpick in the opposite direction but, the costume is a modern take on the motorsport / riot cop look.  In the 70's when Dredd was born, sport bike riders wore full leather suits, now they incorporate tons of armor - pretty much exactly like what the Judges are wearing in the film.  It's an arty update on the concept - one that I think shows a lot of creativity and *gasp* a real understanding of the material at hand!

Ultimately, what is done is done.  You can either support Dredd or not, not that it will make a bit of difference.  Besides - for you costume sticklers, there's still Judge Minty which is DEAD ON aesthetically - I mean, how great is this - we're getting TWO Dredd films in as many years!!  Shouldn't we be passing out the champagne?

With an evening spare it seemed worth a punt:

Ol

This Eagle Pad is awesome.  It's actually cooler than what I thought they were doing (and that wasn't bad either).  Very into the Military / Motorsports look as well.  The helmet - Urban had to wear it for the entire movie - I'm sure comfort was concern number one.  Plus, it looks markedly different from the Stallone film - which is definitely important to the box office.  Bottom line - it's a heavily modified motorcycle helmet for a futuristic motorcycle cop - it makes sense.

It's fake - check the Bleeding Cool link again for confirmation.

I see Hollywood has now ran out of barrel and is now scrapping pavement.....it wasn't bad enough to remake shite tv shows or kids cartoons. Oh no hollywood has decideds that Stretch Armstrong, a shitty toy has the makings of a blockbuster movie >:(

What possible reason can they dole out to explain this driv? Anyone who actually remembers Stretch will not be inclined to watch a film about a toy with a 10 min shelf life. Those who didn't grow up aware of Stretch will by asking "What the fuck is that all about?"

And kids will be ...well kids will be.............hmm,maybe this is an attempt to reintroduce the worlds most shite toy.

I had one back in the 70's and man, it's a toy a kid looks at as a challenge to break.  I mean, you want to see how far it will stretch, the answer of which isn't realized until it snaps and all that blue goo drools out.  I  remember in the 90's they made WWF wrestling versions that were smaller and didn't weigh a ton.  We stretched one until it broke in a store.  No more goo, but this skunky smelling powder.

I think it was Anthrax.

The picture I saw had an eagle codpiece with a perpendicular head sticking right out.

Not really that faithful to the comic, but unless it gets a lot of screen time, I'm not sure I care about his crotch eagle.  As long as the script is good. :|
