Team Classic vs. Team Current
Only work for Tharg to be Considered

The crowd is going wild, literally days of anticipation are now over as we kick off the first of 16 ties to determine which era of 2000ad has the greatest writing Droids, the deep and rich history OR the current bunch, still cranking out thrill after thrill for Tharg.

And what an opening tie we have (genuinely this was the first pairing out the hat!) , demonstrating the rich history of the Prog and Tharg's organs beyond. Very few, maybe only one other Droid has a history for Tharg as these two. Not much needs to be said, but some head scratching needs to be done.

The jubilant crowd suddenly falls respectfully silent as they realise the scale of the competition they are about to witness.

Time for you to decide your favourite as the droids square up to the tee...

Remember for this tourney you have 5 votes to distribute as you please between these two artists, whole numbers only. So you can vote 5 - 0; 4 - 1; or 3 - 2; either way depending on how much more you like one artist's work over the other.

If you can't be doing with that just name your favourite - remember bold tags, or other ways of highlighting always appreciated - and I'll give them 3 votes and nowt to the other droid.

Three day votes, so this one ends morning of Thursday 24th June

Remember we only consider work for Tharg in these Tourneys

What the heck is all this about - well we have a thread for that

How does this voting work? Look here

I don't understand how this works, what are the rules of the Solhiem Cup - yep got ya covered there too

Anything else just ask and I'll make something up. Most importantly, have fun!

Prog / Prog 2237 - Demons of the Deep

Yah know what. If last weeks was a bit of a dip, this one bounces back nicely... which is weird when you consider we've swapped out Feral and Foe for Skipperty... so let's a closer look and work out why... its all in the fine margins.

Dredd steps up from a solid opener to a cracking story builder. Before we get to that HOW GOOD IS COLIN MACNEIL... I mean he's always been very good but somehow he's managed to get even better. And then we get to the story - fantastic. I kinda wonder if Mr W is still coming up with PJ stories, but having taken PJ off the table has to create another tale around it. Either waty this tale of a careful man making one mistake and the escalating consequences if superb.

Mechastopheles remains as it was really. Boo Cook seems to have found the story he was born to draw, it looks stunning. I'm surprised its only 4 parts as I kinda lost track of it - this is fine, I look forward to re-reading it... but feel I need to.

Department K returns to being outright brilliant. Again art to die for, but the story is a blast as well. The fantastic turn up of last issue sends the team... well most the team into dangerous environs and its all just wonderfully realised great fun.

Skipper... Skip Tracer - Right last time this was pretty good, nowt special but good. This time we get to another decent opener with some potential. Let's be clear this series has done that before and dipped quickly into medocrity but two of the stories have also been good now so for the time being this opener gives it the benefit of the doubt. Mind lines like

"Must've missed the memo"

Have it on warning! Oh and more stunning art from Mr Marshal (P)

Chimpsky's Law alway loved the character, wanted him out of Dredd so he could do different things and I've got want i wanted. This is just such fun, such wonderful fun. Its quite superb. Art... well see above really. Brilliant, brilliant strip.

So the difference is minor but basically comes down to three strips that were good last week nudging up to great this week and the rest ticking along.

Simple really ain't it.

Well wow that was a lot closer than I thought it would be - a lot closer, literally coming down to the last vote. The literal very last vote, but just getting over the line

CLASSIC TEAM WIN THE ARTIST RYDER CUP
There's a lot to crunch and analysis so I'll be hoping to add to this thread over the next few days. For now though if you want to see just what a see saw journey we've had, just what a superb competition its been I've dropped a linkie to the spreadsheet I've used to track this...

So as we near the end of one nail biting tourney so we must start the new and so what's nexrt i hear you cry. Well...

...to mark the anniversary of all this tourney nonsense we're going back to the start and since I enjoyed the Artist Ryder Cup so much AND we can't really repeat the Fav writer tourney so soon and expect a different result I'm going with

Writers Solhiem Cup

Same format as the Artist Ryder Cup - but fewer rounds as there's fewer writers - just 16 ties - we'll be done within four weeks and onto the next thing which I've already started planning.

Oh and I've made some decisions I worry will annoy folks BUT we'll come to those in a bit.

So buckle up as the result of hangs in the balance, we now decide which pool of writers is our favourite Team Current or Team Classic?

Prepare to enter copy and paste territory as I explain...So here, over the course of a standard number of posts I'll lay out the format of the tourney. Who's in which Team. The rules, for what they are. A NEW VOTING SYSTEM - ahem the same voting system. A way to ignore the new SAME voting system if you think it's rubbish, or can't be bothered and anything else that comes to mind.

This one will kick-off Monday 21st June with a fair wind. Just in time to mark the 1st anniversary of the original Godpleton Cup finals (actually the 21st marks when the semi-finals started but no bugger is going to bother to go back and check that so I'm well safe...).

Amazingly it could all come down to this. Judging by voting so far in tie 31 we might have the teams neck and neck coming into this last vote. I wasn't expecting it to be this close and this exciting and you have to wonder what each team has left battling tooth and nail for 31 tie, welll....

... two big, BIG artists it would seem have been kept for this final tie, as seems very fitting. We have Mr Covers himself... well of course he's not called Mr Covers but his work has graced more covers than any other 2000ad artist and he still manages to find astonishing ways to show off Dredd and the rest of 2000ad's worlds. Then you have Arthur Ranson. The only artist who is so good he makes it look like he's photo-referencing gorilla's gunning down Judges and pirates on space bicycles. For one final time...

Prog / Prog 2236 - A view to a kill!
14 June, 2021, 08:34:31 PM
Where oh where is that Proudhuff review? Baggin' the Prog thread so late on a Monday evening - what is the world coming too?

Anyway who cares as its a good Prog, under a lovely Dylan Teague cover.

Colin MacNeil's art on Dredd finds new ways to get better somehow. Its simply stunning. The story is an intriguing opening by Wagner as an assassin apparently makes mistakes.

Mechastopheles has a decent episode with a story that allows Boo Cook to shine.

Department K continues to entertain why moving in unexpected direction, again. Last week we had an apparent invasion, this week an Eternal (well Locust) is dead as the Kirby vibe continues.

Chimpsky's Law is the star of the show, amusing, exciting and also moving in interestin directions. This story is such fun.

Feral and Foe has a bombastic ending, all action finale that wraps things up a little generically for the work that has gone before. Its good an' all but we've come to expect more. Still the good news is there seems to be more to come as the Nerve Centre calls it the 'current series' implying there more to come, which is great, well as long as the creative duo visit Kingdom on their way to the next run out.

Maybe not up to the stella levels of last week, but no complaints.

Well into the last two ties and as the cliche goes all to play for Current Team could seal it here with a victory OR Classic Team could take it to the final tie to decide the winner. The slimmest of leads seem to make Current Team favourites, but its about whose left as we've seen both teams comfortably win 2 or more ties on the bounce, edge of the seat stuff.

So into these final two ties what can the teams still have in the locker. They've been trading punches over 30 ties so far. Surely they have nothing left to give... Well hell would you look at that. Classic Team only have Steve chuffin' Dillon! He only made the second round of the original Classic tourney but he did draw Carlos there so, ya know. Current Team aren't doing too bad either. David Roach might have gone out in Round 1 of the Current Tourney - but some on Dave Roach. Not bad. Suspect this will be a toughy BUT these are vital round so...

Arrrrhh is it rude not to vote in your own tourney? I mean I don't normally get to and have relished being able to vote in this one BUT damnit I now see the pain I inflict on you folks day in day out.

These two both inexcusably went out in the first rounds of their respective tourneys something that baffles me as they are both amongst my all time favourites. Frankly I can't be bothered to introduce this one as I'm about to hide under a table and rocky slowly back and forth until I've found a way to score this...

Simon Davis is one of those artists that has a definitive strip, one that he will always be remembered for in 2000ad fanlore. In his case its Sinister Dexter... no hang on .... In his case its revitalising Slaine artistically with the Brutan... no, no, hold on that's not right... in his case its introducing folk horror in modern classic Thistlebo... damnit. Simon Davis is one of those artists that has done so much classic work it's impossible to single out one strip over another. No wonder he was a semi-finalist in the Current Tourney.

Sean Phillips has become one of the great artists working in modern American crime comic having hit after hit with Ed Brub... WE DON'T F@~*in' CARE. We're only interested in work for Tharg ... mind when that includes Swimming in Blood the fella ain't got much to worry about!

If you want to understand the white hot crucible of rage that a human can feel you only have to remind me that Henry Flint, 2000ad's definitive Art Droid, was knocked out in the Quarter Finals of the Current Tourney. I've never quite been able to forgive you all that and still wake up at night silently screaming as I remember the count confirming the result, a cold sweat and hot tears mixing on my contoured face.

I also really like Anthony William's art (but not quite as much)

Tough draw for an artist who went out of the Current Tourney in Round 1 to come up against runner up in the Classic Tourney. Staz Johnson's rugged muscular art has the glorious ability to morph to a style to suit any strip he is put to and in many way his art seems definitively 2000ad. Will all that do him any good for an artist who for some is amongst the greatest, if not the greatest Dredd artist, who ruled the strip for a long period doing Prog's first Golden Age, coming off the back of some very fondly remembered Rogue Trooper work as well.

As we enter the last full week of the competition its all to play for and all square as Classic Team have pulled it back. There are 7 ties to go - what have each team got left in the bag? Well judging by this tie each still has a lot to offer.

Dave Gibbons is such a decent chap it was a real shame when he was just eased out of the Classic Tourney by Brett Ewins in the second round - it was so close. His mark on 2000ad is significant, seeming to draw in almost every issue of the first 100 or more Progd. Yes he's gone onto to bigger (but not) and better things BUT WE DON'T THINK ABOUT  THAT HERE.
We only care for work of Tharg (and sister publications ™)

Phil Winslade has almost the opposite trajectory. He has established himself as an artist working for the big two, only nudging Tharg's organ until recently. His work though on one series alone - Lawless in the Megazine is surely his opus a singularly brilliant piece of genius that earned him a Quarter Final spot in the Current Tourney and a legion of fans simply stunned by the level of detail and dedication he has weaved into this magnificent story. I believe he has kept the art of this series - just imagine - just imagine - if they decided to bring out an Artists Edition of that - wow!

Prog / Prog 2235 - Interdimensional Enforcers
05 June, 2021, 09:10:22 PM
Sometimes a Prog just feels fresh, exciting and renewed and this is one such Prog. Last issue was good. This one is better.

Dredd Dylan Teague shows why he's so much more than a great colourist with some stunning art - with lovely colours of course in another great little Niemand special. Must admit I thought this one was a sting, but it wasn't and Niemand continues to mine The Spirit guidebook to writing great comics.

Mechastopheles Boo Cooks art elevates this series and this is a great episode.

Department K just wonderful, or scene is set, a twist foreshadowed (?) and Dan Cornwell has such fun with colours. A delight.

Feral and Foe to stand out in a Prog this good is quite something and yet Feral and Foe manages just that. With a storming episode that spins things on their head and sets up a serious conclusion one suspect. Genius.

Chimpsky's Law the ape has been a treat in Dredd and just as he was stretching the limits of his potential there he's cast free and we see his real potential. Just charming, funny and sharp. This one has plenty of scope to stretch even further which is what's so thrilling about it.

5 for 5 and what really stands out here is just what a visual treat this issue is. Just a drop dead glorious comic.

Tharg's longest serving Art Droid besides Brendan McCarthy (I believe) - his first work was the cover of Prog 43 has shown with the recent Dreadnaughts that even 44 years under Tharg's yoke can't stop true talent. It took a hard draw against Finalist D'Israeli to topple him in the first round of the Current Tourney too.

Mind no draw was as hard as John Ridgway's in the first round of either tourney as he got Carlos and so we don't have a reliable guide to the form of either of these two. So who will win this battle of the Simons Johns?

When Slaine artists collide! I mean of course both of these artists have done a lot more for Tharg than just the wode warped warrior but I'd suggest that's the strip they are both best known for? Both also faced very tough draws in the first rounds of their respective tourney's which saw them fall at the first hurdle AND both their names end in an 'N'... could they be more alike??? The 3rd placed art Dredd in the Current Tourney and his recent work on Dredd and Hershey have clearly reminded us quite why that is. He will of course be best known as the artist who gave us Nikolai Dante but he has done so much more and we are lucky to still have him around. Hey if you haven't check out the Great Dante Readthrough to learn more about his iconic series from the man himself.

I always find myself surprised when I see Carl Critchlow in the Classic side as he has done so much work for Tharg since the Millennium but not so recently. He's the artist I'd be least surprised to see switch side at some point in the future as we gladly see him back in the Prog - get on it Tharg huh!

Current Team are edging this at the moment, though its still nip and tuck. Classic Team could do with a big week ... do they have anything in their bag to pull out this week.... well let's see.

Entering the fray today a second artist suffering the name Colin of the tourney and another personal favourite. Has any artist mastered the glorious rending of machines and vehicles the way Colin Wilson has? His world's look so functional and real but he also captures the energy and gritty grace of humanity like few others. No wonder we haven't seen too much of him as he's been snapped up by continental markets. He crashed out in the first round of the Classic Tourney much to my fury!

Mind Tieran Trevallion did the same in his tourney. Though he drew the irreplaceable Henry Flint. Tieran is a modern master of horror and the macabre. I posed the question had anyone mastered horror in Tharg's organ quite like Nick Percival and maybe our answer is here? Who do you prefer thoug?

WILD CARD - Dan Cornwell didn't make the tourney proper for Current Tourney but I've pulled him in here as my Current wild card. I'd dare to say that each time he appears folks become more and more aware of what a phenomenal talent he is. Heck if he's one of John Wagner's favourites! Andy Clarke grew before our eyes and the contrast between his early work and the artist he left the Prog as is incredible. I can think of few talents that have grown so much in front of our eyes. Two very contrasting artists here for me Simon Coleby all sharp edges and grim genius giving 2000ad some of its most brutal nights. He had a clash of the Simons in the 2nd Round of his tourney falling to 3rd placed Simon Fraser.
