Off Topic / Dream Gigs?
05 March, 2007, 12:00:03 PM
Went to a great gig last night, which near enough was my dream line-up.

Tribute gig to Wiz from Mega City 4 and the line up was:

Midway Still
Andy Cairns (Therapy acoustic)
John Kastens (Doughboys)
Rueben
Ned's Atomic Dustbin
Senseless Things
Carter USM
Mega City 4

4 songs each (apart from the Mega's who did 7/8) and 2 reformations on the bill was aces.

If they'd swapped Rueben (Wiz's last proteges) and John Kastens for The Stuffies and Poppies then I'd could have died a very happy man...

So how close have you come to seeing the "perfect" gig

Books & Comics / Female Superheroes

Bit of an odd question.

The Better Half is going to a fancy dress party at the weekend with the above theme and is stuck as to who to go to as most heroines are too busty or too blonde for her to carry off.

Short of suggesting she spend the party in the freezer, has anyone got any suggestion that fit the following criteria:

Shortish dark hair
Lithe body type
Not too obscure (if we can help it)

Books & Comics / New Trades!
22 January, 2007, 09:54:16 PM
Just a note to say that I picked up the trades of XTNCT and the first Strontium Dog Agency Files at lunchtime, so they've made it into the wild.

XTNCT looks gorgeous - picked this up because I missed it in the Meg, so looking forward to reading it.

SD Files - First half is the Starlord stuff.  As i never saw these in the past it's great to be able to read them now.  Just a shame that the B/W repro doesn't do them full justice.

Off Topic / Shed anyone?
26 September, 2006, 09:38:37 AM
About this time of year we would normally be getting all excited about the impending Dreddcon down in the sunny Oxford Union.

However the Power's That Be have suggested that they may be doing Something Special for the 30th anniversay and have skipped on the celebrations this year.

So whilst we wait for more information on that, and in the absence of Brighton / London comics con this autumn can we rustle up something of our own?  A chance to see some faces we see less often.

Day in a pub, something more?

Suggestions open to y'all...

Any one know any decent jobs websites, I'm having an absolutely crap day at work, my collegues and bosses are being even bigger muppets than usual and I feel the need to get out of here.

Unfortunately the CVs looking a bit tired, and the out time is rather long.  Been mainly doing SQL and Delphi development for the last 5 years.  Some IT support and Project Management.

Off Topic / The Elephant...
08 May, 2006, 09:25:34 PM
Inspired partly by th epo-faced boring Guardian Jounalist over on their blog section, did anyone else head along to the Sultan's Elephant this weekend?

We spent 3 hours on Sunday following it around Picadilly having a great time.

It would undoubtably have been annoying to get stuck in the road closures caused by this if you had to be somewhere, but otherwise it was wonderful.

And an amazingly small number of pushy tossers, either in the crowd or in the security peeps...

I've been mulling this over for a while, where do you stand on the whole Infinite Crisis/One Year Later/52 thing going on over at DC?  How about Marvel's Civil War?

Personally they're turning me off the big boys.

Initially I was quite happy staying in my own corner.  The Infinite Crisis buildup saw Adam Strange and Hal Jordan brought back and gave me some interesting comics to read.  However I only bought the Rann Thanager War and GL mini's.

Then I moved onto the new GL ongoing.

Infinite Crisis itself passed me by, but I thought perhaps I'd pick up the trade.  However now we hit One Year Later and Green Lantern is feeling wrong.  I really cannot be arsed to get involved in the whole "what happened" stuff when not having read the oter strands of the build up.

I'm seriously thinking about dropping a book mid-run.  The only other book I've done this on is Amazing Spiderman.  The reason there - the dire rethink before the Civil War.

Anyone else feeling the same?

General / PWEI News.
17 March, 2006, 03:52:44 PM
Brace yourselves chaps - this is fresh from the pweination website and updates on the new album that was tastered last year...  it's not good news I'm afraid :-(

"An Announcement.

spoilt by unprogress.

long overdue news boppers. due to on-going commitments, clint and rich are finding it impossible to input time or energy into future 'pwei product'. whilst every effort has been made to wait for all members to have a clear schedule it is increasingly obvious that such a moment will never happen.

with music industry interest looming, promises regarding contracts and promotional scheduling needed to, but could not be met. it is for this reason that graham, fuzz and adam have decided to press on with their new project "vileevils" which will incorporate much of the sonicnoisebyte and many other tunes they have written.

whilst we share your disappointment we are excited about this new project after many months of waiting on a time that would never come. pwei would like to thank you all for your unrivalled support whilst vileevils dedicate an edited version of "retro dreaming" and a 2-minute chunk of new addition "street fightin" to the mighty pweination. let's get down to it."

General / Completly Rogue
15 March, 2006, 03:28:43 PM
Having started to read 2000ad at the time that the War Machine was running (which I still love - shame about Friday), my only exposure to the "classic" Rogue was those reprints in the old "Best Of".  Which only got to Re-gene. As a result I have never read the whole classic saga... until now.

Last week saw the publication of the last of the classic Rogue stories, with the volume finishing at the end of Return to Milli-Com.

There's a few things that are bothering me about the end of the series.  First, as Gordon mentioned in another thread, the resolution to the Traitor General arc is a bit sudden.  Fine the series had reached a point where the Traitor needed to be captured, but a couple more episodes please?  Give Rogue proper completion there.

Bland and Brass' arc also feels truncated.  At the end of their previous story there is a suggestion of wanting more revenge for them and then they turn up for a couple of panels...

I don't have a problem with the Horst stories and they feel nicely crafted - yes on the other thread they feel less open ended than "classic" Rogue but they are treated in the right way.

Finally though - the end of "Return to Millicom" suggests that there was to be an interesting reboot to the series with the introduction of the "Aliens" but I guess that wasn't the case, with just 5 more episodes of Rogue left in "The Hit Man".

What happened?  Did GFD get bored?  Get sacked?  Have a row?  Why did the later reboot not continue from the end of RTMC?

I suspect that Hit Man may be part of the EE coming soon and hopefully Cinnabar...

General / Birthday Presents....
10 May, 2005, 08:08:10 PM
What's the best birthday present you have ever had?

The reason I ask is that I have just had an entrant into my top 5.

Hit the big 3-0 today and a few mates at work have got me http://www.lego.com/starwars/products/classic1.asp?productid=4504">this

Totally unexpected, but absolutely ace.  Feel like sitting here all afternoon making it, rather than working...

How about you lot?

General / Bristol Meet-up thread
04 May, 2005, 06:10:44 PM
Right, so we now know who is going to Bristol, and what they are selling.  Hopefully this should be the last thread.

With just over a week to go I thought it about time to sort out how we are all going to meet up.  Especially those of us descending on the city on the Friday night.

Obviously the place to be on Saturday will be the Future Quake/Solar Wind/Bolt/Byron table (sorry if I've missed anyone ;) )

However that's Saturday/Sunday.  What about Friday?

What's people's plans?  Who are going to Procon (not me)? If not, which pub are you planning to be in??

Suggestions and agreements here.

Other Reviews / Stront TPB Review
15 April, 2005, 04:53:42 PM
Just a quick review, as I grabbed this from FP last night.

Absoultely great.  Some stuff in here I've never read (Galaxy Killers for one).  Pretty good reproduction on the artwork - a couple of places where it does go astray, but hey!

Has the first four stories from Johnny and Co. The Galaxy Killers, Journey into Hell, Death's Head and
The Schicklegruber Grab.

Only complaint I have is that the new splash pages credit all four tales to John Wagner, yet the credit boxes are for Alan Grant (and AA Grant) and Alan is given a back page bio... Can't remember the cover credits tho'

Books & Comics / Bristol COn update....
10 March, 2005, 03:43:39 PM
Prompted by the SOlar Wind website update I wandered over to the Bristol Comics Expo site and noticed that tickets are now available.

So my weekend ticket is now booked up, I was just wondering what peoples plans are for the weekend.  I need  to find somewhere to stay - Unfortunately my better half is doing exams the following weekend so now won't be with me (my wallet is scared) - and am wondering about whether I need 1 or 2 nights hotel...

I don't think me mate Wonx would appreciate me crashing at his place pished...

08 March, 2005, 03:53:33 PM
I dunno how, but someones managed to get "The End is Nigh" mentioned in this weeks Lying in the Gutters.

My guess is that Frazer had something to do with it...

I hope Molcher is planning a large print run on this....

Books & Comics / Comic Connections
28 February, 2005, 03:57:11 PM
After retrieving them from my parent's loft the other week I settled down to re-read Sandman for the first time in quite a while.  And noticed something.

Obviously there are some connections between Sandman and the rest of the DC Universe, for example John Constantine and J'onn J'ozz... as well as the whole Lucifer spin off.  However I've noticed another one that I wasn't aware of.

There may be spoilers to Preacher and Lucifer, as well as Sandman, below...

In the first couple of books there is mention on Mad Old Hettie, who is a couple of hundred years old constantine and Hob Gadling both know her).  Mad Old Hettie crops up a couple of issues of Preacher.  In Preacher God has Quit.  In Lucifer (which is of course based on Sandman's Lucifer) God has also quit.  So is this the same event?

Preacher was always outside of the DCU for me.  But perhaps not...

Any other connections like this around between stories?

News / Dredd vs. Death PC...
23 February, 2005, 06:09:43 PM
Not exactly news in itself, but just noticed that the PC version of Dredd vs. Death was due to be released on Monday...

Is this a US only release date or what?
