Always assumed it was a coincidence born of the same desire i.e. to make it all a bit streamlined and stress the 'biker' aspect.

From what I recall, the original Mad Max was one inspiration for look.

I think it was all coming from that same style - dialled back from the massive shoulder pads.

Sort of finished blocking out the model, and stuck the Minty lawmaster in there...
