Title: Wail with JOY! Mark Russell does IDW mini-series
Post by: Colin YNWA on 20 February, 2018, 08:12:30 PM
Those grumpy chuffs over at 'Everything comes back' do have their uses they have kindly pointed me in the direction of this news

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/judge-dredd-goes-under-siege-new-comic-book-series-1086387?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/judge-dredd-goes-under-siege-new-comic-book-series-1086387?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter)

Anyone who has read Mark Russell's Flintstones, Prez or Snagglepuss will know he could and should be the perfect writer for a different but spot on Dredd. I'm genuinely chuffed by this and can't wait to see what he comes up with.

You should all be gnashing you chops in anticipation!

Yeah,  sounds good (Kidney Hut is in my kind of MC-1). Think I'm in for this one - my first IDW book since the excellent Rogue Trooper.

I haven't seen any of his published work, but I worked on an unpublished book with artist Max Dunbar and he's pretty good. I could see him doing a decent job on this...

I saw this linked on ECBT too, Colin, and you beat me to the linkie. It sounds grand, and to hear from folk who've read other books by the writer sound interested I think I'll be picking this one up.

coincidentally, i just posted the (variant) cover for the first issue over in the Original Art thread :) i agree that Mark Russell seems a great fit for Mega City stories and it sounds like he's been working on the plot for a while, so hopefully it will be a good arc, if a bit short at only 4 issues.

Haven't read anything by this creative team (that I'm aware of), but will definitely be giving it a shot.

Having read them, very much no. (Actually, I didn't read all of them. I gave up halfway through Blessed Earth. It was just too much awful. Here's hoping Under Siege will be one of the rare decent IDW Dredd series, like Year One and the Mars Attacks crossover.

IDW's track record on Dredd reads like a poor report card. Hopefully this is closer to 2000 AD Dredd.

Well, most of the mini-series have been good (in fact, I think as long as there's four issues they haven't put a foot wrong).

Issue 1 is a good read with very solid artwork.

Already an improvement on that shite where Dredd crossed over into an alternate wossname.

Yeah, it's pretty solid. It wears the influences from the 2012 fillum very openly, but overall it's worth the cost of entrance. The tease displayed in the Thrill-mail this week also shows that the art is lovely, too.

I've just read the preview on the Thrillmail and this looks GREAT! I'm definitely going to buy this.

I got my Wednesday's mixed up and thought it was going to be out next week, so was pleasantly surprised when it was in my comic bag already (don't recall if I asked for it, but my FLCS knows me well - they generally know to put any original 2000AD-IP stuff in there).

Read it now - good, but as has been pointed out, more than a little influenced by the 2012 film.  Presentation-wise, I liked the gallery of covers at the back (though confused why people would be multiple covers if they're all starscan-style in one edition).

Very solid read that, but definitely too close to the Dredd film for complete comfort.  As a result it feels like one of those Marvel books where they tweak characters/origins to better match the movie versions. But there are worse ideas, and this is an enjoyable example.  Art is pretty sharp and on-model too.  That's three good IDW books I've read (the others being City of Courts (which I find myself re-reading quite often) and Rogue Trooper).

They published a very nice Judge Anderson collection with awesome  art by Carl Critchlow. Same can be said about Judge Dredd Year One (art by Simon Coleby).

Good set up amd decent start. Being a big fan of the Mark Russell work I've read I was really looking forward to this and wondered why I was too taken by it. Then I realised it was simply that the ideas and themes set up in this issue had all been discussed in the Thrillcast so nothing felt anymore interesting than my excitment as they were discussed... the proof will be in how this is delievered in the next three issues...

Got my copy today and you know what, that wasn't half bad!
While obviously hugely indebted to the 2012 movie-no bad thing, Russell had Dredd's terse delivery down well and there where some nice satirical touches in the little background details.
Rather lovely art too!
I'm greatly looking forward to #2!

If the rest of it is as well put together as this, I'd definitely buy as part of an ongoing series with this crew.

Just read the first issue. It was ok, certainly better than the other IDW Dredd stuff I have read.

It seems to be set in regular 2000AD continuity rather than the IDW Dredd one (given it features Chief Judge Hershey).

In the podcast, he acknowledged the debt he owned to the movie, but it seems his approach was in part about subversion. (The movie being about Dredd having to subdue an entire block, but in this series having to work alongside citizens who have been crapped on.)
