Hello you superbly gorgeous bunch,
I idea hatched in my mind in the spring and has since taken full dominance over my brain - I want to produce a comic anthology and I want it to be
a - huge
b - insane
Here's the hard sell:
It'll be about Doctor Who.
But not as you know it. A one-off adventure of an alternate Doctor - no canon, no arcs, no melodrama, no familiar faces - as surreal and as a curious as you can make it.
I want one to five pages of nuttery madness from ridiculous writers which I'll then siphon off to willing (and hopefully equally ridiculous) artists to bring into shimmering and vividly silly reality.
The thing will be printed in FULL COLOUR and PROBABLY IN A5 - and then I shall distribute the bitch somehow but I'm CURRENTLY NOT CERTAIN WHERE OR HOW.
PM me or comment below if you're up for it -
It'd be absolutely excellent to hear from any of ye :D
Hey there Foxy, I'm if you'll have me :D.
Oh yes please.
I have way too much on but what the hell, I want to draw Doctor Who!
Old school mind - I like to draw curly hair with either frilly shirts, or long scarves :)
Yeaaaahhh! I knew it'd be good, but this I was not expecting.
First dibs on any juicy historical/steampunkery stuff!
Ooooooooo you bugger - I will put this in the pondering cistern for further mulling.
I lay claims on the acid-trippy Who Gang vs. Kinky Sex-Craving Daleks script.
Cheers for the responses -
Emperor - is that a yes ?!
Locusts - that sounds like it could be a ghostpockets pitch ;)
Quote from: CrazyFoxMachine on 03 September, 2010, 08:37:24 PMEmperor - is that a yes ?!
Its a "I've got a lot on my plate at the moment but I am thinking it over and if anything tasty occurs to me I might sketch a little something down."

Ah-ha-ha-ha! Definately, Liam'd love that.
If I can think of something, I'll definitely be up for some of this.
I'm up for it!!
Note that being a charity anthology goes a long way towards avoiding a cease-and-desist order from the Beeb. Two big, fat Perfect Timing collections of short stories, and the Walking in Eternity book all managed to be high quality books that Auntie had no issue with simply by being non-profit.
Cheers!
Jim
Invoke my name thrice and I shall appear like a tea-crazed djinn. This is also my first post from across the pond, where the change of climate has quickened me and reawakened my tantric art mojo.
Well of course I'd like to play. Of course, of course, of corpse. I have manifold ideas and am literally champing at the bit to prove my long held assertion that I could pull a better Doctor Who outta my spectral arse than Russel T. Davies, and an army of typewriter monkeys, could in a trillion years.
As a Man With a Dalek icon, it is my duty - nay, pleasure - to say I'd be up for this.
Cheers Bhuna & Dr X you'll be getting PMs (and of course Ghost I was the one who drew your attention to it so FEAR YE NOT).
Jim - Yes, well - I was thinking about this quite heavily - as much as the aim of the project is to avoid literally all Who canon and go completely out there - I never saw it truthfully as something that would generate as much interest as to disturb the beeb. Plus I don't expect to even make enough moolah to cover printing - !
This sounds fun, I have a few suitably disturbed ideas, if you'll have me.
yup. I'm in.

Well, you never know what might catch the eye of some bored minion in the BBC's legal dept. If you make it clear that it's a not-for-profit project from the outset, then that's one potential problem side-stepped with very little effort.
Cheers!
Jim
I'm in if you'll have me, and to show you how good I am at Dr Who - I actually posted this last Thursday. From the future.
As a writer, I'm totally up for this. Sounds like it could be fun. Also, I've just seen the final for my Something Wicked contribution so I'm feeling all fired-up and productive!
Welcome back, ozebane my friend! How are you?
Pretty good, thanks!
I see things have gotten fairly busy around here. Lots of exciting stuff happening, feels like British comics are having a bit of a renaissance!
Cheers very much for the interest everybody - I'm interested in getting a couple more artists - I know there are a few of you - c'mon - it's NON PROFIT - !
...enticing.
What do people think of the fairly obvious title "Relative Dimensions" or is that too obvious and not psychedelic enough - ?
Suggestions welcome - and MORE CONTRIBUTORS!
I like doing this drawing stuff!
I want a whacky Dalek story!

Well why not go with your reaction to my story idea? Call it:
Doctor... WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTT!!
I trimmed down some of the Hs and As ;)
Ahaha that's actually a very good idea.
Still need more artists btw guys ;) Don't be shy - !
*BUMP*
I've had some lovely scripts for this - I just need more artists - !!
I also want to accompany this plea with an image so here is a picture of a RHINO CAKE
(http://sites.google.com/site/pumpkinpye13/RhinoCake.jpg)
I agree with Emps' Dr. What idea. Simple, yet cool.
Owen you should put a call out for artists on deviant, or use the Feralgargantua machine to capture talent. What's the ratio for art bods to scripts so far?
Doctor WTF?
Chortle I LOVE Dr WTF.
That actually might be a goer - it's a thought dear sauce - I'm now sitting on 14 writers and 9 artists. It's warm.
I LIKE those odds!
Wow, a whopping 14 tales of demented Who in the pipeline? This is going to be a big fat beast of an anthology. Which I believe was entirely the point. But yeah, Doctor WTF? may be the winner.
You always get more writers than artists submitting to stuff like this. In fact, that reminds me...
Hello kids and kiddettes - I'm proud to say I now have a cover artist as well as having some truly gorgeous scripts on the go.

Hows them apples? It's clear I need more artists - also any letterers/designers would be INCREDIBLY useful as this glorious thing needs a logo.
Cheers very much for the support so far - you are all in line for a serious pint of cider.
Go old school with the logo :D:
ahaha - excellent. Although I will need the ?! in there - !
Rookie mistake on my part. Revised version (sans the weathered effects) and a retro coloured version. By the way, I'm not sure of the legality of this logo but I'm having fun messing about with it.
Additionally an exclamation point - but yes - I don't know how legal any of this is. It's entirely nonprofit though, as I will keep saying on Mr Campbell's sage advice. I think I'm going to chinwag with some high-ups and see what they think.
Great going Mr Penguin I appreciate your enthusiasm ;)
Again, schoolboy error on my part. Not to worry, easily fixed.

Note the excellent fanzine Vworp Vworp use the old skool logo and even designed their variant cover to look like the old skool Dr Who magazine, so it is theoretically possible as long as you are not obviously passing off anything as being official:
www.vworpvworp.co.uk
So perhaps go for a wilder colour scheme?
I'm in (if you need some french touch ;°])!
sent you a mail Mitahane -
also click the link to my blog in t'sig if you want a full (slightly updated list) of those participating, as well as LINKS. ON EVERY SINGLE NAME. WHO ARE THEY?!
I need that exclamation mark, Penguin!
Oh sorry, I did it and then didn't post it. Waiting for others to throw some logo ideas into the mix. Here it is with the exclamation point.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/chilipenguin/DoctorWTF5.jpg
Those are just roughs. If you want to go with something like that, I'll start from scratch and take any recommendations you have into the finished logo.
I realise this has probably been mentioned, but how big is this?
By which I mean, what sort of page dimensions should the artist be looking at?
Foxy mentioned it:

Very late here, as I am new to the creative section.
If you want any writing done, let me know. Obviously you have plenty for strips, but will you be wanting any text stuff, from fiction to non fiction. I have muchos experience in magazine writing.
Mmmm, that got me thinking. I dont really have the time to dedicate to a full strip, but I could do spot illos or postery type stuffs! :D
Darren it'd be brilliant to have you on board - all of my writers seem pretty set to do five pagers - but if a one-pager turns up I'll shout.
Emcee - yeah, I've got a few writers who I'm holding back for space reasons (although - I don't know how big it'll turn out to be anyways) - unless of course you want to contribute a one-pager for aul Darren to do - ?
So... a one page Who strip with a non Beeb Doctor?
I have an idea that would work in that format, as long as Darren can get over my novice scriptwriting skills.

I'm sure you'll do fine. Lets do this!
I found some old artwork the other day from the first small press strip I did (for Starscape, no less) where the character description of this superhero was Jon Pertwee in spandex.
As much as the thought of Wurzel in his Y-fronts made me shudder, like the whore that I am I drew it anyway
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/daveycandlish/JikanKappaKings1002.jpg)
Thought it might be appropriate to post here!
His chappiness is more powerful than the radiation admitted from the sun. It defies death and time.
Long live Pertwee - !
I've got something on the go. It's in my work and I keep mean to send it on.
But I did find a fool to draw it all up nice.

DEADLINES
As I want to start piecing this thing together in early 2011 I'd like it if the pending writers could get something pretty spankingly together-looking in the month that Father Christmas raids our houses for all they are worth.
Artists: Don't panic about it - you have all winter.
I STILL NEED AT LEAST FOUR MORE ARTISTS
I'm still up for it. Scanner or no scanner!
Mr Fox. Mines is called "What Happens in Amsterdam..."
And I am deeply, deeply, ashamed of it.
EDIT: To the extent I am thinking of not putting my real name to it.
Hey,
I haven't had a chance to get something written down yet. Crazy busy just lately. I'll get to it asap though. Also available for some lettering duties and let me know about the logo.
...you except your sleazy side Mr EDX - it'll make you a more grounded person - Chili I shall contact you, have I your e-mail?
Lettering would be very much appreciated - !
Exilewood, I really would feel comfortable if there existed at least one weeny little scrap of your stuff somewhere - you'll go on the list. But the mystery that surrounds your talent is a thick and choking fog that both worries and disturbs me.
Yeah - I don't inspire confidence with my less than great skills with the computer. As you said though - the library probably has somekind of scanner?
Here's an attempt at putting up some half-finished Dredd art I did -
Oops!
Forfgot about this- BUT- I have a four page script with the new Doctor and Amy if any artist (editor depending of course) wants a go at it.
Exilewood - YOU'RE HIRED. That's very bloody good -
Richmond - The whole concept is kind of made-up Doctors in bizarre out-of-universe situations. So I mean, as long as the enemies aren't canon could you possibly invent a Doctor persona and a new companion and paste them over - ?
Or, if you really want to have the cannon doctor, and find it a home elsewhere, I'm sure there might be other Artists who would love to give it a shot.
Like me!
'Cosmic Excrement' is the name of the game there, Foxy One, 'Cosmic Excrement'.
:D
There are a few images up on my blog, if anyone is interested.
Of course we're interested man! They're very bloody good!
There should be a great deal made about your Dredd pumpkin - !
Additionally looking forward to this greatly. OH IT'S LIKE I'VE JUST HATCHED A BUNCH OF LITTLE LOBSTERS - !
Thanks both!
It should be noted that there will be a background to the second picture, but I'm going to cheat, ahem, I mean, I'm going to use the artistic tools available to me to put it in place.
Forgot to say, artwork for page 1 of Cosmic Excrement is up on m'blog
And supercalafragalisticAWESOME it is too!
EXCELLENT Bhuna. I get more excited about this thing o' mine every day ;)
CrazyFoxMachine I thought you'd might like to see these pencilled panels from page 3 as a little taster of what's to come!! From Cosmic Worm to an operating table in one page!!

And now there's another pic on my blog.
Why yes, as it happens, I am using this project to increase my traffic.
And deserved it is, because your work on this strip is shit-hot.
That reaction shot is pure Wallace and Gromit, which is a sufficiently British influence for such a national treasure as Doctor Who.
Having written it, I've seen the first page of this, folks, and it really is good stuff.
This comic really seems to be coming together. We really must throw a review copy down Doctor Who Magazine's way when it's all finalised and printed, I'm sure they'd give it an inch or two of space.

...er...probably not with mine either...(see Bhuna'ssamples above)..."Cosmic Excrement" has a finale in which a giant space worm shits a man into another dimension. Need I say more?
I think they'd get a special thrill out of it. I will definitely send it to SFX's Fanzine feature - It'll be promotiontacular - !

If you still need artists for scripts, I humbly offer my services.
Check out the blog.
Another picture on the blog.
Over half way there! Really enjoying this.
I've just finished page two!! I'll post a spoiler later here and on m'blog.

Great stuff Bhuna. Lovecraftian "daleks".
Heh, because tentacled aliens hiding inside cylindrical machines wasn't already lovecraftian enough!
Really loving this.

Well...yes. In classic McMahon style - I'm doing pencils & inks one panel a time. Inks straight on the paper. No pussying about for Gooners like me & Mike!

Soooo - still in need of a decent logo. Still in need of a great deal of advice in terms of potential legality issues and sort of... general small press stuff. Like HOW IN THE NAME OF D'ISRAELI DO I ACTUALLY GET THIS THING OUT THERE.
It's an anthology of love
Mine actually turned out to be 4 pages in the end. I hope Exilewood knows! I think I got that across in the penultimate version of the script I sent him.
You only have to try and draw it to find it'd be a squeeze to get it onto 3 pages. :D

My only worry at this stage is that our offering won't be able to compete against such madness ;)
That's not even the beginning of the maddness! Gotta say, I'm really excited to see the craziness that everyone has come up with! Well done that crazyfox! Great idea. I love this forum.
Editorial permitting, I am one panel away from finishing this.
To put me in a Doctor Who mood, I have been watching Who on BBC Iplayer as I draw. I stopped watching before series 4, so this has been... interesting. Tonight I have found they have put up Turn Left instead of the River Song Library story. Turn Left, if you can't remember, is the one that reminds you of all the worst stories* from the previous few years that you have been trying to forget. Someone at work the other day told me I would like that one. I don't know what he's been huffing, but I want some of it.
*Except Fear Her.
Three pages into my offering now, barring a little colouring to do, and have inevitably begun to detest half of what I've already done. The big re-draw commences...
Oh Jimb don't be so hard on yourself. Negotiating some colouring uh, waiting for my writer to actually finish his bloody script. Sigh. This might be devoid of an editorial contribution :(
It's not that I think it's especially bad - just that I know it could be that much better (true for all my work, in fact).
I'll try to find some non-spoilery panels to post here, seeing as it seems to be de rigeur. Really enjoying this - Greg M's script is a joy, and it's really nice to be working in colour.
Cheers mate, I absolutely cannot wait to see what kind of a spin you've put on my demented yarn. I may well get over-excited and have to go for a lie down. :)
Just had a little peek in my inbox to see Cthloulis' final page, and it is magnificent.
'Tis all coming together!
Now what could this be?

And very nice it is too. Really looking forward to seeing this in print.
Updated me blog (link below or http://crazyfoxmachine.blogspot.com/ (http://crazyfoxmachine.blogspot.com/)) and it collects some previews together and updates it allllll to another level. Plus news.
I'm assuming the deadline for trying to be part of this has passed?
I actually have a scripting vacancy if that's what you're putting yourself forward for - but unless it's a one-page pin-up you're wanting to do I'm afraid aye.
AYE.
A script limited at one page.
Sounds like a challenge. ;)

Page 2 complete
Page 3 50% inked and then colouring
Page 4 layed out
Page 5 as above
All needs lettering (any offers)
Erm...me and House of Usher's is going to be four pages - is that okay? I might be able to finish it sometime this century.
You cursed, cursed artists ;).
I make that 55 pages of strip, plus at least one page of supplementary artwork.
Have you found anyone to do the colouring on ours?
I will happily do my own lettering if someone can just show me the right kit to use and say "off you go!" Is it as easy as that?
Damn, these all look really good. Can't wait to see the finished thing!
Also Re: Lettering. I've never really done it before, but I'll happily have a ruddy good stab at it for my or someone else's strip.
Well, I certainly need someone to do lettering for our strip. I can't do it at all!
Additionally, have you thought of using any digital publishing platforms for the anthology.
I only ask because I got a Kindle for Christmas and whilst it's an excellent gadget for reading books, there seem to be precious few comics worth reading available (if any of you know any different, pray tell).
The reason that there's few comics is pretty obvious - no colour and a small screen (9cm × 12cm).
However, as this is likely to be published in A5 it might just work. You could use a cheapy black n'white version to try and flog the opulent full-colour print edition. It will also maximise availibility, as you can get Kindle apps for iPad, iPhone as well as Android devices. And you can read Kindle books on your computer.
The only problem I can foresee is that the print edition would have to carry letters a minimum of 5mm in height in for it to remain readable when it is shrunk down for the digital edition.
Anyway, some food for thought there (perhaps).
Cthulouis - I actually took a stab and decided it might just work better in black & white. It's a bold strip I think colouring would mute the impact of it.
HoU & Whiteley (regarding lettering) - I'd say you scower the tutorials on this site. I'd recommend Adobe Illustrator (which is what I'd use) - but I'm sure old Jim has plenty of freeware alternatives. His tutorials are invaluable.
Whiteley - I definitely thought about a digital version - but only really in a PDF format. I'd have no idea how to adapt this for eReader devices at all - !

Fair enough, I'm cool with that.
Fox - I haven't got illustrator, but I know there are freeware alternatives, so I'll look into that if you think it has a serious advantage over something like Photoshop (which I do have, and know how to use). Were you planning on having some unified font throughout? I would assume that this project is covered under what Blambot would characterise as a 'not for profit' project. If so, are we alright just using any of the royalty-free fonts from that site?
With regards to the e-publishing for Kindle. I've looked into some tutorials and it doesn't look too difficult. All you need to do is create a zip file with all the pages in some web-friendly image format (JPEG, GIF etc.) along with a HTML file with all the image files imported in the order they are to appear for publishing.
Owen : I guess the pdf file is the best idea for now...
JMW : fonts in toshop are pixelized, meanwhile in illustrator they're vectorized. This is a huge difference regarding printing issues, pixels are cubes of a fixed size, vectors are only directions interpretated by the software which makes you able to resize it at wil without losing quality. Anyway, to print a book, it's even better to put the text after in a software like "Indesign" or "Xpress", all the pics should be .jpg or .eps, 300 dpi CMYK, sized with bleed. Print this in .pdf with the settings of the printing company you're working with then wait for it to come !
I'll stick to PDF - but these are all discussions for when everything is done and dusted I'd say.
In regards to lettering, I'm more than happy to do lettering if people aren't certain. I'll be using free ones from BlamBot but there's no need to have a similar font throughout -
Mitahane - Cheers, I've downloaded a freeware alternative (Inkscape) to have a play with. Just about getting my head around it.
Owen- A PDF is probably the best way, as pretty much everything natively supports it. The only reasons I suggested Kindle is so it could offset some of the money lost in printing and there are knob all comics available for it at the moment.
This is an appeal for help. I need a logo - !
Preferably without copyright consequences - and compact like our beloved prog. Not a banner.
It should read - Dr WTF?! (with question-mark and exclamation mark)
due to the urgency of this plea the person who helps will receive TWO PINTS OF YOUR FAVOURITE LIQUID.
PLEASE HELP.
O, I'll have a word with our designer at work tomorrow and see what he can knock up for you. Is that OK?
Should have page 3 finished sometime today and I'll email you and Locust the page

Nice!
I hope his favourite liquid isn't Chanel no.9 or Bollinger. Either one could be expensive.
That looks pretty slick.
A teaser for my strip written by Christov. I encourage all artists reading this to send me a mail with a decent teaser image and I'll slap the logo on it for you - lets get the promotional horse trotting.

Oh Procrastor...
Fox- That looks grand. Is he on a planet made of custard? because if he isn't, he should be.
I've put a black and white promo image up on my blog. Anyone fancy taking a stab at colouring it?

Bhuna - excellent! Exilewood, we must do SOMETHING about your scanning dear boy - !
All these previews will be collected on my blog and...
THE DR WTF?! WEBSITE. Which is coming soon. VEEERRRY SOON.
Ewwwwww! WTF?
I feel I must post the following caveat - Mr. Usher had nothing to do with these awful, drunken, stoned, pictures. I just got a little carried away.
Preview pics as well now?! Tsk. Don't want much, do you?
I'll see what I can do. For now, you'll have to make do with a spoiler panel - murderous flamenco dancer ahoy!

That is looking super sweet, Fox.
Tonight at the pub I might have wrangled us some publicity. Don't really want to go into to much detail in case it falls apart. Will report back later!
Louis - sinister
Jimbo - EROTIC
You know I'm a caveman - Foxy - the only thing I can think of is that I'm gonna send you, by Royal Mail, the original pages. Once done - you can do what you like with them.
There's 4 pages - and they're beautiful - nothing like the insane sketches you've seen here - keep them - give a couple to David Usher - I don't care. Do whatever you like with them : I'm a guitar player, I couldn't give a hoot!
Oh - Oh, by the way - I mean MY awful sketches - not anyone elses's - everyone else has produced some wonderful stuff. Good lord. Please don't let me be misunderstood.
Four finished pages already? Wow! I wanna see! I wanna see! :)

I knew it was a difficult panel description when I wrote it, so it was reassuring to see it was possible to draw, and I was very pleased with the very dynamic result.

But yes, it's a cool cool cool cool (and BRIGHT) comp with quite a range of stories and (BRIGHT) art. Thanks for putting it together Foxy!
I second that. It's a big, mad, gorgeous piece of work with a remarkably varied set of stories, all inspired and mental but very different. Congrats, CFM! 'Twas a particular privilege for me to have the first story in it!
Yep. It was a pleasure to work with Liz and Owen and listed alongside everyone involved. I read it all last night and there are terrific stories across the spectrum, of what could be. Some real frightening ones, straightforward funny and mind-bendingly-wacked-out, hysterical ones.

Well - there's the complimentary copy for the cool kids... ;-)
And the one for those who nearly made it in but not quite (through no fault of their own!!!) :'(

Heh, not a problem. As I said to you before, my email is playing up something rotten. Still haven't got to the bottom that problem....also, still haven't got your email! Could you try and send it one more time...? If that fooks up, I'll wait until the actual comic is printed, no bother. ;)
...Or I could just send you a DM on here
Van Dom you more than deserve a contributors copy I'd say, let me rustle one up for ya ...
Got it, thanks CFM. Only had a brief peruse so far, but it looks.....AMAZING. :D

Just finished it, and feel compelled to commend Berlin in particular.
Yeah, the art's good, but I heard the guy who wrote it is a real penis.
I'd like to speak up for Kitsch 'n' Sink, which was so utterly gorgeous I had to take a cold shower after reading it.

What he said. Naming no names: You know who you are! >:(
EDIT: I'll happily buy one. I wasn't angling for a freebie, but rather was pissed off at not getting into it.
I thought the Canine story was witty, sharp, edgy and definitely left openings for further doggy misadventures. In my mind some of the best writing and art in the volume.
And a genius pun.
Ladies and Gentleman - the proof is in!
The only thing left is to set up the thing to sell digitally - any recommendations? I seemed to recall there was a great site for all things of that ilk but I've forgotten it's name. Not lulu though.
Oh boy - not Lulu. I used them to get a wtf proof done, cost eight quid, half the stories were missing and the colour was completely off. Not Lulu.

I've only tried these as a consumer mind you but it might be somewhere to start.
Boarders here got "Turning Tiger" on the myebook service.

Are you going to make a press release style of thing explaining how people will be able to get hold of this in its various forms? One that can be easily cut and paced into blogs so that we can easily point our non-boarder friends in the right direction?
Yes sir don't you worry that's all coming this week ;)
Sweeeeeet:D
(I suspected you might, and was mostly posting to allay my fears that I might have missed something. Big place, this "Internet" thing.)
Can you email us contributors a clean cover image to plaster on our blogs and other forums we haunt?

A monkey. In a hat, in a mask. (sorry)
CFM, how do peeps go about purchase a digital copy? I'm going to pop it up on the Classic Marvel Figurine Collect forum for ya!
I'm afraid I haven't been able to get along with any distribution sites (Myebook & Pully App) so it'll just be a case of e-mailing owenATdrwtf.co.uk the AT being @ and the Owen being paranoid.
Contributors free copies are going out tonight. WOOP.
More sketches for digital buyers - !
