David Bellamy used to be a senior lecturer in Biological Sciences at the University of Durham.  Which is why he gained an audience far beyond the realm of the minor celeb for his claims, and why it's so irritating to see quite how much he was prepared to rely on junk science.

He's incredibly full of shit when it comes to wind power as well. Anytime anyones making dubious claims or drawing heavy black marks on a photograph to show what wind farms in the distance might look like he'll be there...

Trust me, being a senior lecturer does not automatically make someone trustworthy or a particularly good scientist.  If a lecturer stays in the job long enough, they'll probably become senior lecturer simply by default, with little regard to their actual talent in any given area.  In fact, the single measure meriting their continued employ, and their promotion (that is probably most common) would be that their students (generally) pass.

You may be shocked at the amount of lecturers (senior or otherwise) who are only a single chapter ahead of their students on any given topic at any given time.  Broad knowledge tends to mark out a well-rounded lecturer, not deep knowledge.
