Except back in their original cinema releases in the early 80's they both had quite large cinema audiences relative to their cost and didn't need VHS sales to make large profits:

The Terminator

Budget   $6.4 million
Box office   $78,371,200

Escape from New York

Budget   $6 million
Box office   $25,244,700

It's all a matter of degree here.

Perhapse Dredd could take the idea that Eden of the east took in world wide takings. It's the reverse to dredd actualy, the first series of EotE did great in Japan but was slated in the US when one critic noted similarities to the hugely populare Death Note (of which there are few) so did poorly here. In response to this, the two movies that succieded the first TV series where given limited theatrical releases in yanky town and the success lead to the second TV series entering production and the entire fanchise getting recognised in the west at last. Maybe Dredd should follow this pattern:
Dredd (2012) to one or two TV series which could then lead into a sequel going into production. Critcal reception of dredd was positive enough to inidcate a hard, HBO style drama could work.
