Title: 2000 AD Website Back and Badass!
Post by: w3bz on 25 August, 2009, 10:30:29 PM
Well...that took a damn "site" longer than expected.

So, we have basically a bells and whistles framework to start working with. The show's most certainly not over and in the coming weeks, months, years we have plenty more to pack into our new and shiny site. Vincebot will be keeping you posted with updates in development who is seriously starting to run out of batteries as I've kept him up until the small hours to complete this - so slap that droid on the back people.

Hope you all enjoy, and please post any constructive feedback and feature requests into the post Vince puts up shortly  ;)

Looking good.

Not had a proper investigate yet, but the "Media" link appears to be broken.

Dare I mention that both the front page spot 1650, and the page it links to, claim that the line up is Nikolai Dante: Tour of Duty, Shakara and Kingdom.

Shurely Shome Mishtake?

Very impressive.

Is the character/creator information the barney information brought back onto the main site? Its all very nicely fine-grained and also search engine-friendly (top SEO marks all round ;) ).

One thing I noticed though was that the creators are being sorted by first name not surname.

Anyway fresh oil all round.

Ha Ha funny moving banner!

Looks like Joe is pumping some bellows.
Zenith? over his shoulder has seriously aged and is hiding from the paps.
Nemesis is steam powered.
Dante has the worst gut rot ever.
Red is a man in drag.
Tor Cyan? is wiggling his man boobs.
And everyone's drinks are empty, must be Sinister's round!

Brilliant.

Rest of the site is great too.
Not sure the staff section is very enlightening though.

With all due respect that banner thing is shit.

What exactly is the point of it? And did the end result justify the time and effort spend actually achieving it?

I mean.. 'ohh look the characters heads giggle about abit in an unconvincing manner!'

pifft!

Will check out the rest of the site in due course, but looking at that home page (which is mostly just a big white space) I'm in no hurry.

Had the same thought about the banner but the fact is this is the first time the site proper has actually worked since I joined the forum so I figure I can live with a minor irritant that, lets face it, is hardly going to detract from the rest of the great stuff on there(and more to come) in any  meaningful way.

With all due respect that was a really douchey way to go about saying that. I too thought the top banner was a little 'busy' when I first loaded it. But it didn't turn me into a raging ass-hat that felt the needs to slap the very people that spent so long redesigning the site for us!

Urgh, see, this is is why I don't use forums. This is the first time I have logged on since 2007, and I had to remake my account then because I forgot my previous one. I'm already thinking of logging off again...

It would be great if that could reappear somewhere, although I understand it's probably best not on the front page considering the amount going on... but

A general reply to people in general:

Just use the top links if you don't want to use the flash ones.

The flash banner up top was an idea of 2000 AD's that I put into use, there's no real biggy with changing it up a bit, particularly when we get the accounts side of things sorted then you can choose what to appear. And no it didn't take long, so I'm sure we

Quite, that wasn't at all helpful or polite - two things I've come to expect from this forum.  w3bz and Vincebot have been working their rears off for the site (read: US - the fans) so the least we can do if we don't like something is the offer a reason why we dislike it and maybe a way it can be improved in your eyes.

Personally I really like it.  Particularly Finny wandering about.  Shades of that birthday story where Sin/Dex are working the door and Ramone knows Dredd, Johnny and Nikolai but poor Finny hasn't got any friends.....  AH!

Looking good. Nice surprise for me this morning.

I do like the news announcement 'Strontium Dog returns...' etc images.

Regarding the new banner, I think it is important that plenty of 2000AD characters are featured rather than just Dredd as on the old site (even though the old animation of Dredd was excellent). But the overall structure is there and there is content in all the sections. The banner can be updated or amended from time to time I'm sure, as has already been mentioned.

Glad to see the vault and creator lists. No doubt in due course all the links will be active eg 'View All' in Thrill Vault.

Well done to all involved for the hard work.

That was a bug, the "View All" links should work now. You can also use the links across the top of the page to access sections of the Vault, such as character list, creator list, series list, etc.

Fixed, the lookup table picked the wrong "Tour of Duty" when the data-entry happened. There's likely to be a few of these, the more recent the issue, the more squiffy the data.

I add a leading space to keep the titles unique, so assuming that those were preserved when the new database was created, there shouldn't be a problem. The data entry point I use for BARNEY won't let me add duplicate titles (in the same table - there are Megazine stories with the same titles as 2000AD stories).

No 2000AD banner, animated or not is complete without Slaine.

That might explain a few things.
Unfortunately we're trimming and normalise all the story titles in order to get the SEF URL stuff to work. Two actual titles can be the same, but the normalised versions can't.

I hope I haven't broken anything in the early prints due to the name duplication.

I quite like the wobbly-shimmer effect, it's a bit mad. I like the way Durham's boobies jiggle (though they don't jiggle half as much as Rogue's moobs) and the way Finny keeps popping up in different places.

Yeah that was part of trying not to lose data - I think there were two entries where a series had a "copyright holder", so there you go.

You can't see any details on them because creators don't show their series ownership.

Great work guys, but I hope the Shop site is on your To Do list.  It's old and clunky and the revamped homepage only serves to highlight how basic it looks - especially the way extra tabs have been jammed in at the top every time new merchandise becomes available.

Also the on-line back-issue ordering is still under construction.  I now realise that the placeholder that says it is being worked on by a "crack team of web-bots" actual translates as "robots on crack" - they're certainly not doing working on anything in that area!  And to think Julian told me "We're just sorting out the encryption at the moment so it should be sorted soon" back in December!

Some really great feedback, it's nice to see you all taking the time to let us know how you're getting on with the site  8) and like I said before, I'm sure there'll be a few animations to come, it was something I wanted to do before but then got too busy with not only the new site but everything else that gets thrown at us :)

I'm sure you'll be happy to know that the shop IS on the to-do list, and strangely while the back issues list was almost done I decided in the end to scrap it much to the annoyance of you lot I'm sure, but it just wasn't going to be as good as getting our main site up and then putting it together properly as a feature.

And Umpty, don't worry about it - after being up until 11 doing the site I was a little cranky myself  ;)

Good vibes people, keep up the decent feedback!

I quite like the wobbly-shimmer effect, it's a bit mad. I like the way Durham's boobies jiggle (though they don't jiggle half as much as Rogue's moobs) and the way Finny keeps popping up in different places.

haven't had a chance to try out all the archive and index stuff, but it's looking fab, nice work guys.

Concerning Rogue's man boobs. They look normal for a weightlifter. I didn't look at the facade long enough to notice Finster was popping up in different places.

I'd say that would be just right for Ukko on the other side.

BTW, looking at the same Kev Walker picture thats been placed on opposing edges of the screen or quite a while now.

It's just abit biazed against Slaine and his drinking buddies.

You can only see the top of his head.

I hope that feedback is descent enough.

Looking great! Well done, boys.
I'll post more specific (and hopefully constructive) feedback as and when it occurs to me.

New sites looks great. I'm so glad the old functionality of having things broken down by strip name, and being able to see what episodes appear in what issues is back.  That thing was invaluable.

However.

I think you need a back and forward scroll button on the regular 'view prog' screen (like this one (http://www.2000adonline.com/vault/progs/1650)). So we can jump easily through prog contents.  Also the return of a 'enter specific prog/megazine issue number' prompt. Again, fro easy browsing of the back catalog.

Again, website looks great.

Whoops, yeah that should be on the to-do list.

Needs doing, but for now you can just change the URL - when you're viewing a prog it says /vault/progs/1234, and you can just change that number to whatever prog you want to jump to, if you so desire.

The site is looking good! Nice to have the individual issues information back, but I did prefer the old layout for that info, or the www.2000ad.org (http://www.2000ad.org) layout.

Well, it's still there mostly.... minus a messageboard.

Well done, web-bots.
At last Tharg has a website he can gloat about again.

For too long I kept hearing about "bugs" in the system. I assume they're a new breed of Thrillsucker, that Tharg as finally learned to control.

Is there still a "Dreddworld" section (for example showing maps of Dredd's world, and listing the CJ's timeline)?

Once again, well done on the new look, glad normal service has been resumed.

You are probably aware of this, but currently all the Prog 20XX issues (the end of the year 100 page monsters) are missing from the site database, and therefore the stories contained within are not archived/indexed.

I'm sure you're already aware of this, but since I couldn't find any mention of it in the thread (granted I did just do a quick scan), I figured I'd mention it. Just in case.

Yep, known issue. These were contained separately from the progs and megs of the old database and thus weren't converted in the initial batch. They'll be done along with the Graphic Novels, Reprints, etc, when we get some spare time to work on the database.

Hah, nice.  I still love the way Robert 'Rights Issue' MacDowell keeps popping his domino mask into view.

Site's looking very good, also simple to use and quick.

Apologies but can't help lamenting the lack of online back issue ordering. I'm missing progs 1639 and 1640 and I know I could make a phone call- but if I knew I could just make a few clicks I'd have got them ages ago. I'm sure newcomers would also use it to to do a bit of catching up.

And also we overseas readers in different time zones.  If I want to call the number I have to stay up until 2am or some such silly time.  It's just too  inconvenient.

The fact that some of the black copy top left (Forum/ view new replies etc) disappears into the mono image on the left (right about near Dante's head if you glance about four inches <<<<< that way) when you scroll down is very annoying.
