Classifieds / DREDD and STRONTIUM DOG art...
14 December, 2013, 04:19:45 AM
Hi all,

I had a few requests for what I had left to sell, so here we are. I've had these for years but needs must.

Two pages by Kev Walker for Judge Dredd: Sin City (please excuse the yellow hue from the bedroom light, the paper is a crisp white), £50 each.

And the jewel of my collection, a page of history from Colin MacNeils' gorgeous Final Solution, for £150...

Acetate overlay is separate to the painted artwork. There is residual adhesive from the masking tape from this at the top of the page itself.

Art will ship from Stockport, outside Manchester special delivery. Will calculate any postage once offers are made. Any questions let us know.

General / SECTOR HOUSE 113- A NON PROFIT FAN FILM
12 March, 2013, 10:31:45 PM
Hi all,

I'm currently developing a non-profit fan film based in the Dreddverse (not Dredd3d) called SECTOR HOUSE 113. A public group has been set up on facebook for people to come and join in the discussion http://www.facebook.com/groups/sectorhouse113/. It's at the very early stages as yet, lots of ideas, working on a script, etc, but the outline is there and reproduced below:

"There are 400 million stories in the Big Meg... this is one of them."

SECTOR HOUSE 113 is is not based on any one story from the Dredd universe, nor does it feature Dredd himself, but instead it is an exploration of what it means to be a judge of Mega City One without the benefit of Fargo's bloodline.

When Judge Lars Redondo hears that the rogue Wally Squad judge who killed his mentor six years earlier has turned himself in to Sector House 113, he immediately heads there for answers. He soon realises the prisoner has secrets about the Justice Department many don't want revealed, and the decommissioned Sector House, staffed only with cadets and a handful of street judges, is now the biggest target in the city for gangs, muties and bent judges alike. Who will survive till dawn?

SECTOR HOUSE 113 will be respectful to the source material and we intend to use the excellent Planet Replica classic uniforms. No fundraising will be employed in the making of this project.

This is a NOT FOR PROFIT FAN FILM. Judge Dredd® is a registered trademark, © Rebellion A/S®, All rights reserved. Judge Dredd is the Creation of John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. No connection between me and 2000AD, Rebellion or Planet Replicas should be inferred.

Some FAQ:

Wait, who are you?

Just a fan, like you. I was fortunate enough to work on Judge Minty doing storyboards and that experience of working with such a great cast and crew inspired me to have a go myself, both writing and directing. I have a couple of short films I'm developing before gearing up to do Sector House 113. Of course, if they go badly wrong...

Is this anything to do with Judge Minty or it's cast and crew?

No, this is completely separate from Judge Minty (or indeed any other fan film out there currently), but I do hope to at least attempt to reach the same level of awesomeness that Steven Sterlachinni, Steve Green, Dan Carey-George, Edmund Dehn and all the others achieved. However with using the Planet Replica uniform, there will be at least a visual continuity.

I have a Planet Replica Judge uniform, can I join in?

YES! I'm hoping to rope in- I mean invite- as many Planet Replica wearing judges as I can. AT the moment there isn't a finished script yet, but there will be a number of onscreen judges needed (both helmeted and otherwise) so pretty much anyone with a full uniform who is available at the time of shooting (whenever that may be) will be invited along (and likely pull double duty as gang members), and if they can do a convincing American accent, even a speaking part!

When and where are you planning to film?

There is no date or location yet set, logistically that will take a lot of time to arrange (and only after the script is finished), but when its definite I'll update the thread and the facebook group with relevant details.

Will you be doing fundraising/crowdsourcing/kickstarting/selling kidneys?

Being a nonprofit fan film I won't be fundraising in any way- any cast and crew involved will be doing it for the love of the source material and not for any monetary gain.

I know a (insert crew function)/I am a (insert crew function), how can I be involved?

I'll definitely be looking to put together a cast and crew over the next few months, and while I certainly wouldn't presume that anyone who worked on Minty would automatically want to be involved with this project, I would be more than happy to work with any member of the Minty cast and crew again on SECTOR HOUSE 113. Some have already voiced an interest, which is awesome. If you have a interest behind or in front of the camera, come join the facebook group and say hello.

When/where will you be screening it?

That's something in the distant future right now, but if permission is given, I would hope 113 follows Minty's successful trail through the festival circuit before heading online.

What is it about?

Well I don't want to give too much away but it is inspired by the likes of The Pit, America/Total War, and Mechanismo.

Wait- Mechanismo? Big robo-judge mayhem?

Yep. Oh. And there's a stub gun.

Who are you again?

I won't be spamming this thread or the facebook page with tons of updates or early rough images, but I do hope you let us know if you'd like to see more.

cheers

Pub Fiction takes a jump back into the world of comics on Friday, 22nd July with an audience with Al Ewing – a veteran of 2000AD and one of the great prospects of British small-press comics.

Al Ewing began his career writing stories in the five-page Future Shocks format for 2000AD. Recent work includes Damnation Station and Zombo, illustrated by Henry Flint, which was collected in trade paperback in 2010.

He has also contributed to Solar Wind, FutureQuake, The End Is Nigh. Al is responsible for the diary of Ralph Dibny and the mobile comic Murderdrome with P. J. Holden.

Current comics projects include regular stints on Judge Dredd and an upcoming six-issue arc on Jennifer Blood, a comic published by Dynamite Entertainment.

Al's debut novel was published in 2007 by Abaddon Books. Pax Britannia: El Sombra features a mysterious Mexican hero fighting back against the menace of steam-powered Nazis. It is set in the same Steampunk alternate history as the other novels from the Pax Britannia series. Three other novels have been published since, with a fourth on the way.

General / ART OF BRETT EWINS BOOK
23 June, 2011, 08:03:22 PM
Hi all,

Not sure if anyone has posted this before, but this came my way yesterday, thought it might be of interest to fellow Squaxx.

"Air Pirate Press announces the publication of The Art of Brett Ewins

From the book's back cover:

"Judge Dredd, Johnny Nemo, Bad Company's Kano, Rogue Trooper, Veto Skreemer ... just some of the characters to pour from the pen-nib of Brett Ewins for comic publishers around the globe, including Marvel Comics, DC Comics and UK's Fleetway. In a frank interview, Ewins talks about his drawing techniques, his work habits and the years of stressful over-production that led to major illness and his early retirement from the harrowing production-line life that is the lot of most professional comic strip artists. And then there's the artwork, mostly shot from the over-sized originals, revealing just how Ewins' pens and brushes created these mini-masterpieces. Included here are inked comic pages, pencil drawings and full-colour paintings. A treasure trove of art, some of it previously unpublished."

Two years in the making, The Art of Brett Ewins features a candid 11,000 word interview with the creator of such iconic comic strips as Johnny Nemo, Skreemer, and Bad Company, covering his decades long career illustrating major 2000AD strips as Rogue Trooper, Judge Dredd and Anderson: Psi Division.

From his first efforts in the comics business with close friend and drawing partner Brendan McCarthy, with whom he published Sometime Stories, Ewins landed drawing assignments with the then-nascent 2000AD comic. Inside a year he was drawing fill-in episodes the comic's lead strip Judge Dredd, then was handed the long-time gig on Rogue Trooper.

By the mid 1980s more Dredd and work on the Dredd spin-off Anderson: Psi Division followed. Again, teaming with McCarthy, Ewins produced two limited series – Strange Days and Johnny Nemo – for American independent publisher Eclipse. Then in the second half of the 1980, Ewins embarked on the operatic Bad Company, working from scripts by his long-time friend and collaborator Pete Milligan.

During the early 1990s, while Ewins was illustrating a third series of Bad Company and simultaneously editing the cult monthly Deadline, his health took a turn for the worse and by 1995, he had all but retired from the comics business.

The Art of Brett Ewins chronicles all this and more, in Brett's own words, talking frankly about his years in the comics business work and the toll it later took on his health. Illustrated with 49 black-and-white and 70 colour pictures, The Art of Brett Ewins is an 80-page softcover book, price £9.99.

Available from Amazon.co.uk, WHSmith.co.uk and other leading online booksellers. The Art of Brett Ewins (ISBN 978-0-9569149-0-3)"

Books & Comics / TALENT SEARCH- EAGLES INITIATIVE
14 October, 2010, 10:47:41 PM
Hi all,

Just a quick note for those wanting to break into comics as a creator, that the Eagles Initiative website is now open for submissions to its worldwide talent search.

With Stan Lee as its patron and a host of top name creators on board as judges, the Initiative – an offshoot of the long-established Eagle Awards – is offering untried talent a chance to demonstrate their abilities before a global audience.

Launched in May 2010, the Initiative provides a unique platform from which the next generation of writers and artists can promote their storytelling ability in an increasingly competitive market.

Entrants can be a single writer/artist, a writer and artist, or a writer, penciller and inker team. They should submit a clearly told, self contained story of between 4 and 10 pages to www.eaglesinitiative.com/Submissions where full details can be found.

The thousands of expected entries will be assessed by a hand-picked jury of comics readers, which will present a final dozen to the panel of judges comprising many of the comics industry's top talents. Among those who have already agreed to participate are Tom Brevoort, Mike Carey, Howard Chaykin, Chris Claremont, Mike Deodato Jr, Steve Epting, David Finch, Geoff Johns, Denny O'Neil, Trina Robbins, Bob Shreck, Gail Simone and Roy Thomas.

A cash prize is on offer to the top three entries as voted by the judges:

First: £1,000
Second: £500
Third: £250

In addition, all 12 short listed entries will made available both digitally and in print in the form of an internationally distributed anthology.

The deadline for submissions is midnight (GMT) on Monday 31st January 2011.

For further details on the Initiative, a full list of judges and complete juror and submission guidelines, go to www.eaglesinitiative.com. Any questions don't hesitate to shoot me an email.

cheers

News / ROSS DOES DREDD!

Hi All

Below is a press release for a event people may like to be involved in. Not just specific to 2000AD or indie press but ALL UK comics, its an attempt to raise the profile of the Brit industry and help promote sales of comics. Anyone has any questions please shoot.

"FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Press Contact: Barry Renshaw, editor@enginecomics.co.uk

COMICS NATION: NATIONWIDE UK COMICS EVENT AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Never before have comic books been so present in the public eye, with the ever increasing success of big budget movie adaptations of superhero icons, the proliferation of manga in popular culture and the growing interest in more non-genre specific independent titles such as Blankets and Persepolis in the broadsheet press. Although British mainstream audiences are starting to catch up with the rest of the world in exploring the potential available in the form, anyone passionate about comics knows there is so much out there to explore.

As such, an unprecedented nationwide event will take place on the Bank holiday weekend of Friday 26th to Monday 29th August 2005 to raise awareness of the medium, as part of a year long promotion of the vast amount of talent on our own shores. Lead by Accent UK Press and Smallzone Distribution, the 365 Day Comics Nation reflects the activities of over sixty independent publishers and even more individual creators who have already been involved in cartoon workshops, signings, reading and discussion groups, panels and exhibitions over the last few years. For the first time these will be coordinated on the same weekend, taking place in galleries, libraries, comic shops and book stores across the country, engaging the public in fun activities.

?We had a long tradition of newsstand comic books in this country until the early Nineties,? says Accent UK and Redeye Magazine editor Barry Renshaw, one of the organisers. ?Due to the economics of the time, dozens of titles for all ages, genders and tastes disappeared until only a handful remained. Whereas the rest of Europe, Japan and America have enjoyed a progression of the form in the public eye, and more importantly, widespread distribution, the UK comics industry instead has not developed the way it could have.?

Creators looking for an outlet have instead looked abroad for job opportunities or have turned to independently producing, printing and distributing their own works in small numbers, and have not had the opportunity to find their full audience. ?It?s certainly not due to a lack of quality or talent, just simply availability,? believes Barry. ?With this event we hope to re-educate the public of what great material is out there, get them involved in making their own, while supporting local retailers and arts centres.?

A number of events, individually organised by creators in their own local areas, have already been scheduled with many more to follow. The organisers encourage pros, amateurs, readers, retailers, anyone with a passion in comics to become involved, and invite them to visit comicsnation.blogspot.com for further information on how to do so.

For any further information or media please contact Barry Renshaw at editor@enginecomics.co.uk.

About Accent UK:
Formed in November 2002 by the lead creators of Deva Comics, Engine Comics and M56 Comics, the Accent UK collective combined to produce an annual US format anthology which has since garnered much critical acclaim, award nominations and the attention of the entire UK indie community. Realising strength in diversity and cooperation, the group set in motion a more formalised support system, through collective convention appearances, workshops for local children, panels and sketching/signing sessions, while promoting through websites, cross advertising, and continuing to develop a healthy network of creators across the country and beyond. With publications such as the popular Rough Guide To Self Publishing and Redeye Magazine, AUK are an example of how to provide both an educational and promotional service to artists and writers looking to create their own independent comics. Visit the official website at www.accentukpress.co.uk.

Books & Comics / writers wanted...
30 May, 2005, 09:22:40 PM
Hi All

After the Bristol convention we were inundated with copies of comics to review in REDEYE, at the last count 65 with more to come. To make sure we
can do them all justice for our next issue in september we need a few more reviewers.

If anyone is interested, please send us a 600 word sample review of a UK comic, including contact details, creators details, page count etc for the
comic your reviewing, and the types of comics you'd like to review.

Also, we need writers of articles on Brit comics and creators, past present and future, and on surrounding issues of censorship, politics, overviews on
a creators work etc. Again send a sample article max 2000 words.

Particulary for the next two issues, I'm looking for an overview of Warrior, and select works of Alan Moore.

If anyone needs any more info let us know.

Cheers

Help! / DREDD VS DEATH PC GAME
17 March, 2004, 01:38:41 AM
Hi All,

Dredd fan in need of tek advice here. Got the DREDD VS DEATH game (twice would you believe) on PC, yet having severe trouble getting it to work, despite my PC being more than compatiable to the minimum requirements. Besides running a very slow frame rate, it crashes completely on the first level. I've called the helpline, I've reinstalled the game twice, closed all other programs to avoid any potential clashes etc, and yet nothing seems to work. Anyone had similar problems? Any advice?

Cheers
