or even a preview before post thing; the amount of times I've posted straight after an original message because I've noticed a mistake.

Probably a lot to ask I admit; just throwing it in the air

preview would be better, and as an optional function we could switch on and off in the chat room

This was suggested a while back but was rightly not added due to the potential of abuse

Floyd-the-k

preview would be okay - I can't see how that could be abused

I'd love an instant post function, you know, instead of that stupid smiley face bloke and then having to return to the message index to see the message you just typed. I'm not looking for Ajax or nuthin' - just... you know, instant posting.

Also: I know I bought it up some time ago, but I'll do it again: RSS feeds for new messages :)

I'm playing about with a preview function now. The problem is that since I want to keep the stupid smiley face bloke then I have to work out a way to mazimise his window on a preview but not a post.

As for RSS, I had a bit of a look into it last time it was suggested but couldn't easily figure out how it works. If someone who knows about setting up RSS feeds wants to give me a hand then I'll give it a try.

Cheers,

RSS Feeds: http://www.downes.ca/cgi-bin/page.cgi?db=post&q=crdate=1059503386&format=full

I would suggest that every time a post is added that the RSS file (a simple text file with a fairly rigidly defined structure) is updated with the most recent 20 posts. I prefer full content, but you could have as much or little content as you prefer.

Then, somewhere on site you have a link to the rss file (http://www.2000adonline.com/messageboard.xml, for example) you could also include a link to the rss in a meta tag of the pages to show up as an RSS feed icon in Firefox/Safari and IE7.

It really is very simple, the most complex thing will be figuring out the best way to generate the RSS file - probably the best bet is to just append to the file as posts are made - this will ensure you don't need any sql to generate the file.

Hope that's of some use and not too patronising.

So, How many messages are there going to be now, where people write they're testing the preview...

... like this one?

(On reflection- that works well- even if it does fill the entire screen. Can I be bothered to use it? Only time will tell!)

When a message is posted, and the smiley guy gives the thumbs up, would it be possible for the initial message thread window to refresh.

But not refresh if smiley man gives a thumbs down?

One more thing- the preview view does check html, but I notice that the font is different. Not that it matters particularly, but is the preview page linked to the .css file?

I[backslash]'ve just attached the css file to the preview page. I[backslash]'m not sure how to make one window refresh another. Any ideas?
