Film & TV / Re: Best Film Oscar : You Decide!

Zombie Strippers was a fun movie, I actually saw it in a theater!

Ahem, what do I think will win best picture? I think Slumdog Millionaire will win it, and it's a very solid choice.

That said, I think The Wrestler should have been nominated for best picture. At the very least, Mickey Rourke should win best actor I hope.

This does look fun, I like the whole retro craze that's been going, what with Grindhouse and whatnot.

Another very cool looking retro action movie is Give 'Em Hell Malone, starring Thomas "The Punisher" Jane as a slick dick with a gun.

I enjoyed The Spirit, personally.

Over-the-top hardboiled narration, highly stylized, fun characters, hot dames, Samuel L. Jackson giving a legendary performance... what more do we need?

I can see why a lot of people don't like it, it has a very episodic feel to it and never builds to a classic 'climax', but all in all, it's an offbeat, good time at the movies.

Can't wait for Sin City 2.

I watch it, it's a fun show. It's produced by Sam Raimi, who brought us Hercules and Xena.

Fans of the original book, Wizard's First Rule, apparently usually don't like the show, as the show is a lot less serious, and is highly episodic.

A lot of wacky, good high fantasy fun though. Plus, one episode had cult legend Ted Raimi in it.

"Dredd may have been invented by a Brit, but he's pure American."

Tsk tsk.

Well, I mean, Dredd is literally American. He's a lawman of Mega-City One, which is located right here on the East Coast of USA (where I live). Brit, American, we're all the same on the inside, especially when Dredd shoots us and our insides are on the wall.

On the subject at hand, hell yes this is great news! I can't wait for this movie. Here's my fantasy cast:

Judge Dredd: Viggo Mortensen (the bottom half of his face is superb)
Judge Death: Robert Englund (with CGI face, Davey Jones style)
Judge Anderson: Laurie Holden
Chief Judge Griffin: Ed Harris

Christopher Eccleston was my favorite Doctor. Wouldn't it be fun if they went back to using him?

That said, I'm sure they've got some prospects in mind for the role already.

That's pretty funny, they're really playing with us here.  :P

I'll see the movie and see what I think of whatever ending they use, but I for one am a fan of the squid.

General / The sleep machine...
25 October, 2008, 09:36:41 AM
When the sleep machine was first shown in the Dredd classic Cry of the Werewolf, I was quite impressed. Dredd was on the street for 36 hours, and now he schedules 10 minutes in the sleep machine, and then he's back on the streets!

I love it, how it shows Dredd as a force that is literally always on duty, except for 10 minutes every night or two.

That was the first appearance of the sleep machine, right? Though it's possible I missed an earlier appeance, especially if it was in an annual or special (I've missed quite a few of those).

The second appearance that I noticed of the sleep machine was in The Graveyard Shift.

It's interesting how little details like this really add a lot. Before, we'd assumed Dredd sleeps regularly in his apartment on Rowdy Yates block, like a regular human being. Now we know he's a crimestopping machine that virtually never stops.

General / Re: Sentencing in Mega-City One?

Sure, Dredd's shot down plenty of criminals, without necessarily needing to use lethal force. Like that time the criminal group that met every month wanted Dredd to break a law, and have to arrest himself. So, they had an escaped killer run down a one-way street and taunt Dredd. Instead of driving the wrong way on the street, Dredd shoots the guy dead.

Classic Dredd... who's gonna argue with the man?

General / Sentencing in Mega-City One?
22 October, 2008, 06:41:45 AM
So, is there a guide to sentencing in the big meg? I've seen Dredd give 20 years to perps for all sorts of crimes, from stealing a car to robbing someone. For killing a judge, the most odious crime, he sentenced them to life on a floating island thing. Sometimes he sentences people to time on Titan. And of course, for crimes against Mega City One, he'll sentence you to death.

I've seen illustrated guides to various things, anything like that published for sentences? Does the punishment fit the crime? What do you think, folks?  8-)

I still enjoy the show a lot, but I have to say, it's never gotten to the height that it reached with season 1 again since. I doubt it'll ever be as fresh and awesome as it was then, but I'm glad it's continuing none the less.
