Topics - Artificial Idiot

#1
Right, I've had two essays to do over the weekend, one was easy, but the other is literally starting to give me a headache.

The topic is 'Why was there a Civil War in the USA between 1861-1864', I have the really basic information and I know the basic catalysts (Federal/Central Gov./Western Expansion/Slavery/Taxes & Tariffs/Which all led to the secession of the Deep South) but I'm having trouble fleshing them out.

I've trawled a few sites, looked in the text books but they all seem to overcomplicate things, so does anybody know anywhere where one can get simple information on the causes of the war? It would be a great help!

Film & TV / Animal Face-off!
29 October, 2005, 05:48:07 PM
Just saw an advert for this on Discovery Channel. The basic premise seems to be that they take two simular animals, some nutters study the animalistic characteristics and build finely tuned robots that ape the animals abilities, and then the two go head to head to forever prove who is the king of the animal kingdom.

Did anybody catch when this was on? As it certaintly seems an intriguing premise.

General / What nationality are they anyway?

I was reading the Invasion EE recently, and was quite surprised to learn that Volgs are Asian. Now, even in the old Invasion strips they looked/dressed like Europeans, so what's all this about? Was the artist/writer just too lazy to put the extra effort in giving them that 'Asian touch', or are they actually Germans/Russians in a very poor disguise?

Just something I found yo be quite strange.

I thought that seeing as I was home, and had one of my sketches uploaded, I might as well kick this off.

As it was bound to happen!

First sketch of the day: Lobster Random by Boo 'Can I do you a Random Lobster Instead?' Cook.

(sorry it's so huge...)

Not sure if this has been posted on the forum yet, but for my part I hope it gets vandalised. Just for the sheer irony of it all.

Anybody in Scotland up for the job?

Off Topic / American CDs?
16 August, 2005, 05:41:24 PM
I was wondering if the infinate knowledge of my fellow boarders could be of assistance here.

I was wondering, would CDs from America actually work in CD players over here? Or are they dodgey and backwards like the DVDs?

Prog / Prog 1452 - SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL RESISTANCE
15 August, 2005, 04:51:30 PM
Wow, Prog line up is still going strong! :D

Nice cover, but I feel that the sctrach lines were a little underwhelming. If you're going to try and make something look old, you either go all the way or you just don't bother, really. It's a nice enough image though, even if it is a little static... Could have really done with a more dramatic image considering the caption.

Dredd was great! It's nice to see Giant up and running again, and I just can't wait to see Rico with his titanium jaw! Vienna's dilemna really hit home as well, especially blended so well with Giant's own trials and tribulations as it was.

Savage is still top class stuff. Was amazed to find out from a friend that the Americans actually did you delpleated uranium aromour plating on thier tanks... Well I never...

Leatherjack continues to amaze and bemuse me as only John Smith can!

Breathing Space is shaping up to be an intriguing tale, too early for me to judge... I just hope the change in art duties doesn't effect the quality too much (unless, of course, the quality is increased!)

As for Robo-Hunter... Lunacy! Complete and utter lunacy! And I'm loving it!

Welcome return for Droid Life too!

Prog / Prog 1445: Tartan Terror
27 June, 2005, 07:28:47 PM
I hope to grud nobody has made a topic on this yet...

Dredd has really captured my interest again, things are really starting to get intriguing although it does seem Guthies in over his head...

Sin/Dex was actually quite good. I'm surprised at the quality of this strip, even if the Poriot knock-off bugged the hell out of me. Worse than translating hieroglyphics...

Flint really out did himself with the interior of Shakara's home world, I'm taking bets on how fast Shakara disposes of Fist...

Honestly didn't read half of Atavar... Skipped the first three pages and it didn't seem to harm the stories quality one bit. Seems a lot of long winded pointless explanation in this.... Lovely art though.

Cabs Inc. is definatly the highlight of this prog though! Reminded me why Ness is the only one I can ever remember.

Film & TV / Like Braveheart, with Daleks!
03 June, 2005, 12:53:06 AM
I read somewhere (and I'm far too lazy to go find the article) that David Tennent wants to wear a kilt for the next series of Dr. Who.

Which leads to two questions, what do you all make of having a Doctor who can dismantle a cyberman in split seconds but trembles at the thought of a slight breeze? And secondly, which degenerate wants to make the first crack about his sonic screwdriver?

Personally, I think it's more than a tad impratical...

Dunno if this was worth a post, but I just found it a bit odd. Is there a reason for this? Or did somebody plain forget? :p
