Hope no-one minds another off-topic Doctor Who post, but I thought some boarders would appreciate this info on future Classic Who DVD releases...

First up, the release schedule will be changing slightly meaning we'll see more than half-a-dozen stories a year. As I understand it, the plan is to have 10 releases each year:

1 boxset - multi-DVD set collecting several linked stories

5 "Special" DVDs - fully-restored episodes, complete with substantial extras

4 "Standard" DVDs - fully-restored episodes with limited extras

The first "Standard" DVD will be the two-part Tom Baker story, The Sontaran Experiment, due out this October.

Another "Special" DVD was also announced. Apparently riding off the return of the Cybermen, the classic Troughton serial The Invasion will be released in October. As it is missing two episodes, animation studio Cosgrove Hall (who produced the Who animation, Scream of the Shalka) will be producing two black & white animated episodes to fill these gaps. Each replacement episode will be synched up with the original soundtrack, and you can see a brief trailer over at the BBC's Doctor Who website - http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/news/cult/news/drwho/2006/06/20/33077.shtml">here

Lastly, the boxset release for 2007 has been announced - The Return of the Master. It will collect Tom Baker's last two episodes as the Doctor - The Keeper of Traken and Logopolis - and Peter Davison's first story, Castrovalva. The three stories form the debut of Anthony Ainley as the Master.

Pretty good news for fans of the old series!

That animation is a cracking idea -wonder if it'll grate after 30 minutes.

Not a big Who fan, but I did recently watch 'The Five Doctors' and it wasn't all I remembered it - if that was the enhanced version I'd hate to have seen the original!

You mention Anthony Ainley as the Master - watching the show I could have sworn it was a young Jim Broadbent.

Wonder when the Master will make his 'reloaded' appearence? Have any actors been suggested?

Woo hoo! What a good time to be a geek. :)

The Master has been played by four actors in the TV series, though only two played him for more than one story:

...and he was played by Eric Roberts in the TV movie:

...and by Jonathan Pryce in the animated story, Scream of the Shalka:

Don't know whether he'll make a reappearance in New Who, though he might make an interesting regular villain if handled well.

This one also has the best Doctor Who incidental music ever...
The wages of sin are death, but the hours are good and the perks are fantastic.

Re: The Master,

Actually played by Roger Delgado (Pertwee years), Geoffrey Beevers and Peter Pratt (Tom Baker years), Anthony Ainley (baker, Davison, C.Baker, McCoy), Eric Roberts (McGann) and Sir Derek Jacobi (Scream of the Shalka with Richard Eggplant).

Jonathan Pryce was in Curse of Fatal Death (Roawn Atkinson).

Ah, you're quite right - dunno how I got that last one screwed up. Faulty memory circuits? ;-)

SmallBlueThing

Aha! Forgot to put "pedantic Steev" at the end of that, to stave off loud shouts of "geeky twat!".

And of course it's ROWAN not "rwoarn" Atkinson (or however I spelled it).

The only Who that matters is Kenny Who?

Re: the Master,

Are they all supposed to be the same Master, or does he somehow manage to regenerate a s a dark haired guy with a goatee every time?

judge dreddd

he is a rogue timelord, in theory he could change appearance like the doc

Satanist

So if he's another TimeLord how would they bring him back in the new series.

"I'm the last TimeLord, except fer him."

PS. I know this is opening a can of worms but as I'm not overly familiar with the old Who but would like to start does anyone want to recommend a "best" Who on DVD?
Hmm, just pretend I wrote something witty eh?

The Master never actually regenerates - the Anthony Ainley body is a possessed Trakenite in a false beard.

Some of the time, he looks like this...

Yes, but does he?

Is the Roger Delgado Master the same generation as the Anthony Ainley Master?

Or did he wake up one Morning to find he's Mick Hucknall and think, 'Time to grow a beard and break out the hair dye again.'?

Is that where he's been so far during New Who?
