Latest post, his most recent run on ABC Warriors:
http://tuggingyourcoat.blogspot.com/2011/06/abc-warriors-2001.html
So many blogs to keep track of. But Mick McMahon's I will definitely make sure I keep tabs on.
Quite interesting to see he inked printouts of his ABC Warrior pencils in case he made mistakes. Now how could he mess up his pencils when he is surely he is one of the best comic artists ever.
Didn't his inking style for Slaine come about due to working on tracing paper, again for fear of making mistakes? That style is still influencing artists today.
This blog is absolutely wonderful. I dunno what goes on in that man's brain but the results are stunning...
Those Tank Girl pages look P.H.E.N.O.M.E.N.A.L.
Pity that they're not going to see oversized print glory in the Meg. :(

It was interesting to see a sample of 40k work he did for an N-Gage game. I never would have known about it otherwise. Loving the angry Space Wolf portrait! :D

It'll be one helluva a scramble if he starts putting Dredds on there!
For those that are waiting for their commissions to land, Mick has started to post images (http://tuggingyourcoat.com/) for some finished ones.
I'm in awe every time I see one of his pictures.
Jesus, that's perfect. After a year of immersion in the boring practicalities of making Dredd and his uniform work on screen, seeing that's like having a veil lifted from before my eyes. Thanks for posting, Fox.
Oh lord...
I gotta admit that just made me smile. Big time!

I'm sure that's one of the commissions he put up the pencils for a little while ago. There's going to be one very happy punter the day that arrives in the post. Anyone got an idea what Mick charges for something like this?

Aye, why pay a dealer a small fortune for a page of published art which probably wouldn't have been your first choice anyway, and which they may have came by through unscrupulous means (see the Original Art thread discussion of Bolland's 'lost' pages), when you can get a bespoke creation as beautiful as that - and know every penny is benefiting the artist directly. I've just saved myself months of ebay-based misery, disappointment and frustration.
That's why I go for commissions these days. It's a really rewarding process getting to 'chat' to, and directly benefit, someone who you have admired for years...

Definitely - a McMahon commission is definitely on my list for later in the year if he's got the time.
If you're after a Dredd, he's got an inked one and a pencil one waiting in his shop ready to ship.
Cheers,
can't afford it at the mo, and to be honest I think I've had my fill of Dredd after the past few years of doing Minty etc.
I've had my eye on that inked dredd for a few days now........just trying to get past the hurdle of finding £250! Might sell one of the kids.
Mick is my all-time favourite artist and he is sorely missed in the prog. I managed to bag 2 of the pages from his last prog appearance (i love them!) but one of these inked dredds would be fantastic .
The dredd/death/anderson pencils commission on mick's blog is just great isn't it?
Agreed!
Also the Satanus and Blackblood ones are very strong images. I think he's nearly got enough 2000AD based ones to do an excellent high quality 'sketch book'.
Just day dreaming.
Yeah, the satanus picture is lovely. if i produced a pencil page of that quality i would feel compelled to ink it.
As for a McMahon book, i would be first in line to purchase it. His work more than anyones made me want to draw comics. I have long since given up on that dream but i still always feel inspired to draw when i see his drawings.

Anybody on here snag it?
Alas, not me. Couldn't justify that kind of money wjen i need it for bills!
Every Dredd he's drawing at the moment is better than the last. Think i might request a picture when i can afford - would love a rico dredd. Or maybe the fink.

Hopefully all these commissions will be landing soon (next month by the latest?), and a couple have popped up on CAF already.
And Mick has posted that he's taking on more commissions requests that he'll be hoping to complete by Autumn this year.
Exciting times!
Mick's posted another commission (Dredd v Satanus, and its a right corker!), so it looks like the more complex ones may be landing soon... plus he gives Dredd (the film) and Minty the thumbs up! All good!
Over on his blog (http://tuggingyourcoat.com/2013/06/04/last-american-from-the-1987-uk-comic-art-convention-booklet/#comments), Mick McMahon has posted this rather lovely looking early art tryout for the Last American. Interesting to note its dated 1987, so was drawn a good while before the comic hit the stands.
That's just beautiful.
By golly, this McMahon chap can draw a bit well.
Mick and Greg Staples to be, possibley, working together soon? An example of the team-up can be found - HERE (http://tuggingyourcoat.com/2013/06/08/rogue-staples/#comment-1759)
I also spotted the image on Greg's facebook page. I'm a big fan of both artists and I wouldn't have pegged them as an obvious choice for a team up, BUT this works really, REALLY well!
It manages to balance a good combination of strengths from each artists!
Oh my giddy Aunt that looks great. hope this happens.
Mick's latest blog post features thumbnails and pencils (as well as the final inks) for his recent Slaine episode:
http://tuggingyourcoat.com/2013/08/21/neither-fish-nor-fowl/
Interesting to get a feel from the pencils of the more scratchy finish associated with the original run rather than the solid blacks used this time.
Still lovely work.
Beautiful pencils, I'm still amazed with how lightly he draws his pages.
As for the 'scratchy finish' to the art, Mick said recently on his blog "I've been asked more than a few times to draw in one of my old styles, but have always reckond that it couldn't be done... ...I was right!" Maybe he tried and just slipped into what he was more familiar with at present.
Still wonderful work.

As an artist I must say Mick's blog is immensely gratifying, because he's so unbearably hard on himself and is incredibly honest about how hard he finds certain pieces. If it still happens to a legend like McMahon, there's hope for all of us!
I just wish Tharg would give him a (minimum) three-part Wagner-scripted Dredd to work on. He's one of the greats and needs to be in the prog far more often (and with better material than that Slaine one-shot).

Wow, "new" McMahon art from my favourite period, great stuff.

QuoteI drew this around the time I was working on the Judge Dredd serial 'Block Mania' (http://tuggingyourcoat.com/2013/09/29/yes-its-good-but-why-has-he-drawn-the-pages-the-wrong-size/http://tuggingyourcoat.com/2013/09/29/yes-its-good-but-why-has-he-drawn-the-pages-the-wrong-size/), and both were inked by filling in the shadows with a brush and then doing the linework with a dip pen, the idea being that you didn't waste time drawing lines around areas that would eventually be solid black – 'Put the blacks in first, Micky', as Mister Gibbons was wont to advise.
If that isn't the single greatest piece of art advice anyone has ever given, I want to hear what is. Astonishing that someone so accomplished and with such an idiosyncratic and expressive style as McMahon was taking pointers from other artists, but that tells you everything you need to know about his approach and his motivation for producing new work.
WOW that bit of works marvellous. Lovely b& w art.
Any lottery winner's amongst us might like to know he's selling the original art to his recent Slaine (http://tuggingyourcoat.com/slaine-book-of-scars-2/) episode. Pencils, and full inked pages are available.

I bought Starblazer 71 (1982) as I couldn't resist reading the whole thing. It is old school thrills, space hero battles da alien menace and their machinery, nicely done but bonkers ending. I wonder who wrote it?

Phooaaawwwrrrr! That looks absolutely amazing. It's about time Mick put his skills forward on Hellboy. His style will be well suited to the strip.
On another note, my dream would be to see Mike Mignola doing a Dredd story, B.P.R.D's Guy Davis did a Dredd story in the Meg some time ago and my heart missed a beat when I saw it; I was almost jumping for joy! Not only that but Dave Stewart did the colouring.

Fantastic. A perfect fit too!
Mignola's long been a fan of Mick's, hasnt he?
But great to see his workload steadily increasing.
There have been some simply amazing commissions on Mick's blog recently. I'd be hard put to say which was my favourite (apart from my own of course), but this one really stood out.
To me, it's very reminiscent of those amazing McMahon covers. A striking, engaging image of Dredd, which makes you want to know the story behind it.
Dredd has executed a perp... why?... who is it? Dredd is looking directly at the reader (audience), are we on lookers?... are we next?

Yeah, it's an amazing piece of work - the atmosphere of silent menace is just phenomenal. I feel slightly bad about the amount of work that's going into this but in my defence (a) it was mostly down to Mick and (b) at least I didn't request a crown scene from Block Mania. I will admit to liking the general composition and the drawing/colouring of the dinosaur (apart from the teeth), but everything else just went to pot.
It was commissioned in the early eighties as a cover for the dummy first issue of a magazine which was to be called Zarjaz (what else?), but, as far as I know, the project didn't get much further – hardly surprising, with this aberration stinking the place up.

I agree! I told him off! And I wasn't alone. The single best painted Slaine image ever (imho)
It is a great piece. Artists can be so hard on themselves!
He is hard on himself - v-hard for someone I, as an observer, would see as having an illustrious career - but the insights he gives into what he likes or dislikes in an image are so informative.
He's till pushing himself and his art when others could be, consciously or unconsciously, coasting on past glories whilst producing the same standard work time and again.
Dunk!
Mick's blog is my absolute favourite of any artist for that selfsame reason - his honesty is amazing, and as an artist myself it's comforting to know that Mick's works don't just spring perfect and fully-formed from his pen but emerge from the same tortorous process of self-doubt and dissapointment as any of us. If I'm ever really struggling I read his blog for a bit and remind myself that it's okay to have off-days sometimes.
It's a fantastic blog. Partly for his modestly, mostly for the jaw-dropping art.

ITS BLOODY LOVELY!
One of, if not my favourite 2000ad cover (actually I think there's a Nemesis cover I prefer) recreated quite superbly and then wonderfully finished and coloured. That is simply magnificent!
Haha! Pretty sure this particular issue was only 8p, Colin but couldn't find enough of a hi-rez version and just went with what I had. Went with the yellow elbow pads as well because in another fit of utter sacrilege, I've always preferred them yellow.
I would have said 8p, but upon checking, it was as Colin stated, and 9p.

Blasphemy to some...
Not in any way. That looks rather lovely indeed.
(Do you fancy colouring my Mick commission? ;))
I may already have. Haha! Which one is it?
Well, I certainly wouldnt mind if you had. But mine is this one - http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=985057
There is a Guy on the CAF site who does digital colouring - for a price, of course, and I had thought of dropping him a line. Wouldn't mind a few pieces I own being coloured.
Never doubt my nerdery... or to but it another way my ability to looks things up on Barney

Oh me of little faith...! Haha!
That is a superb colouring job, great stuff! :)
Has Mick McMahon seen this? I'd love to know what he thinks of it.
Hey Blackmocco, if you get the urge to colour this, feel free :)

I paid a little extra, for Mick to do a digital colour version on one of my commissions.
I suppose this could give you a palette?

The Prog is really good at the moment, but why is McMahon not in it? The commissions are just fantastic, and the colour is great BM, fantastic cover.
And I received this yesterday from blackmocco. Amazing work, and I couldn't be happier. Thanks, Mick!

Blimey!
It would appear that Mick McMahon is closing his blog down in September, and then deleting it.
Which is very sad news, as it's been a fantastic insight into Mick's creative processes, along side showcasing his glorious art - both new, and old.
:(
Shit.
That's a shame, hope everything's OK with Mick.
Drokk :(
Aawww. I loved that blog. I hope all is well.
Thats bloody awful!
What a shame.
Merd :'(
Anyone know why he's stopping?
Seems to be gone this morning. Sad day. :'(

Anyone know why he's stopping?
I think he's just had enough of the internet, pretty much.
I can't recall accurately I'd it was yesterday or Monday I was on there... :(
I must admit that between visits I had forgotten it was closing. So I guess I was lucky I popped on. (I realised while I was there)
If anyone wants to get in touch with Mick regarding commissions or original art (nothing old though - all long gone) drop me a line and I'll pass on the details.
For any one who wants to browse the blog its still available here.

Argh. I'd somehow hoped thread bumpage would mean the master was blogging again. Alas. Such a great blog (and talent).

Nice one. I had come across this before, but link now saved.
What a great blog this was. Sorely missed.
Sorry to raise false hopes. I've been downloading my favourite pieces all afternoon in case it ever goes for good. Too much goodness to be completely lost. Would be nice to print up in a Lulu book for personal use only of course.:)
I could certainly see that blog being repurposed into a book.
I'd buy it.

Ditto, in hardback, signed bookplate edition.
"Now I'd buy that for a dollar!"
I'd probably stretch a little higher.
