Hi-Ex will return to Eden Court , Inverness-31st March and 1st April
Well the times fast appoaching, well six months away but ya gotta plan these things, so Who's going to Hi-Ex 2012?
I imagine there's CF's Hell Trek/Southern Contingent, a possible FeckTrek from Ireland and various rogue Jocks and Northern Contingent vagabonds, along with various artists winding their way northwards.
From a previous thread names volunteered are:
Kinda confirm are: Crazy Fox, Pete Wells, Mangamax, Dave Thomson, King Trout, Proudhuff, Dode C, The Monarch, DanDontdare Also the artists Colin McNeil, Alex and Buttonman :o
Possible Possibles:James Stacey, Minty, Jim Campbell, Nev and Simply Si.
Unable to attend: Bolt (and peter Wolf :-X)
so are you up for it?
No idea if the FeckTrek will be going, but I'll definitely try and be there.
Well I'll be there as it's only 15 miles it'd be rude not to really.
Me. Letting the train take the strain. Happy to go from Edinburgh or Glasgow.
HellTrek or direct hopefully
I've decided to fly this time - far less scary than Hell-Trekkin it and much quicker! Can't wait.

What a hive of scum and villainy.
:)
No seriously great pic. Alas some of those boarders featured seem to have disappeared. :(
Come back Roger, Dog Deever and Mister Wolf. And if not I hope they're safe and jolly wherever they are.
Can't speak for Roger, his Mum, or Mr Wolf, but I know DogD has had a pretty crap year so far, hopefully he'll be back on the ball for this gig!!
I should be attending said event although I am still awaiting confirmation of my fee for my letter writing workshop - one sign up so far a Tam Proudhand, seems a needy sort!

heck, cycling from Preston to Inverness is only 360 miles. That is do-able over 5-6 days...
...although I wouldn't be able to carry my stock on the back of the bike though...
...and it would be cold...
...and wet...
...and there are lots of hills...
but apart from that cycling does sound like a good idea, but if I can make it to Hi-Ex then I'll be best going by car/train/plane!!
Will be aerocrafting it from Bristol I suspect - Jimbo is CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGED TO JOIN ME
Yup, I'm going to be attending, hope to put some faces to names etc.
I think we're going to need a bigger boat hall
I think we're going to need a bigger boat hall bar.
Fixed that for you.
Maybe.
Think I'll be going to this. Does anybody know any nice hotels in Inverness that aren't too pricey?
I stayed in a place next to the train station a couple of years ago and I'm looking to to avoid it if I can.

I stopped in the Ramada encore in January this year, it was very nice - friendly staff, clean, quiet etc... I ate in the retaraunt on one night because I couldn't be arsed to search for something with a little more personality, but it was actually pretty good.
Overall it's not too keen on price, but was comfortable.
I'm torn between the Ramada (only have to stagger to the lift each night; possible convention-rates tba) or a local B&B (cheaper but less handy)
There is a Premier Inn less than 2 miles from the Ramada also a Travel Lodge and a Holiday Inn Express within a few miles if that helps folks.
...sigh...
Looks like the Ramada might be the best bet. I'll probably book something closer to the event.
Does anyone know when the Hi-Ex webpages are actually going to be up and running? :-*

Tch. I offered, you know...
I'm hoping to go up there and much like the Enigmatic Doctor X, I will let the train take the strain. I don't think my car could handle another convention road trip, the ride from Edinburgh to Bristol in the summer nearly finished the bugger off.

I just want to drink on the train. The rozzers take a dim view of that kind of thing when you are driving.
Previous Hi-Ex's I've taken the train after work on the Friday and had a couple o cans on board, it means your not too behind when you hit the Ramadanadindong Bar later that night

Any idea when tickets for the event will be available? I can't seem to find them anywhere on the Hi-ex website?! :o

I'm planning to go all being well.
Don't forget, if anyone fancies joining the Hell-Trek we have a few places left. The route is Maidstone - Gatwick/Heathrow - M1 (up to junction 28) - M6 - Paisley - Inverness. You know it makes sense in these times of austerity and it's good fun :D
P.S. It's a door to door service, nearly ;)
Right... Flights and hotel booked for Hi-Ex 2012! Yay! Only about twelve weeks to go!
-- Mike
Trying to get enough local people together to make the trip viable. Got three maybes over and above me and Iz so far
So if a gang of six of us were looking to fly up from Bristol, how tricky is the last stage post airport?
Any advice?
Which airport? If you fly into Inverness, you'll be in Inverness. Just get a taxi to the hotel.
If you fly into Edinburgh or Glasgow, you'll have to drive a few hours north. I think it's about three to four hours from both, depending on the time of day, but the SCARY WILD NORTHERNERS can probably advise you better. I'm a lowland Scot, and am therefore far too focused on matters like using soap.
- Trout
Edited to add: If you're getting a train from Edinburgh or Glasgow, you'll need a taxi or bus from the airport to the train station. Otherwise, it's simple enough.
Sorry, yeah... flight to Inverness
But wasnt sure if Inverness airport was like Cardiff airport i.e about 30 miles outside Cardiff
Also wasnt sure if the con was listed as Inverness being thats the closest place people will know but is really far out from there
if that makes any sense
Ah, right. I get you.
It's a bit out of town - maybe five miles or so - but that's nothing for the Highlands. Once you get into Inverness, everything's very centralised. The event itself is in the middle of town.
- Trout
G O O G L E - M A P S :o
H I V E M I N D E X P E R I E N C E
I'm telling a bunch of people considering the trip if this is doable. It me that gets the grief if we get the the airport and what seemed easy enough is a nightmare
I'm a firm believer in the principle: if you don't know something, ask about it. It's better to talk to those in the know.
Also, he's a Welshman coming to Scotland when it's not the 6 Nations. He'll be a strange beast to watch. People will ask: "Why is this hairy foreigner not wearing red? Why is his face not painted? Why is he sober - oh, wait. He's putting that right."
- Trout
My wife is meant to be coming along and she's from Prestatyn.
The Hi Ex Welsh contingent is growing.
Inverness Airport is just off the main road- it should be a dawdle. I've never been to the airport like, but I've seen it from the main road many times. There are regular buses into town as well and it's a piece of cake to find Inverness- it's not like there's much else round about tbh- water and hills.
http://www.hial.co.uk/inverness-airport/
Meanie. The airport is proper close. Between 6 of you the taxi fare will only be a couple of quid. So wish I was going.
Thanks for the info guys, I'll pass it on to the organising committee :)
So...
Is everyone going along just for the Saturday, or will there be loads of people in the bar on the Friday?
- Thirsty Trout
The Hell-Trekkers will be at the bar Friday for definate and we'll put in another impressive showing :D
We're probably coming.
We're trying to work out quite how we're going to manage things with the boy.
Think we're going to drive up from London on Thursday / Friday - hang around Arbroath Dundee for a few days after - depends on relatives plans...
Sorry Meanie didn't mean to be snappy, I google maps anywhere I'm heading to as a matter of course. The chaps are of course right its a spit was from town and a dawdle to get to/from

Hoping to be there, if the good grud's willing and the creek don't rise
I'm going to have a go, but there are all sorts of issues with work right now. Our start times keep changing without warning (yes, I know they're not allowed to do that) and I'm not guaranteed nights off if I ask for them. So that affects when I can come along.
But I'm hoping to get along for the Saturday, as least, even if I have to head home on the Sunday morning.
I'm going to have a couple of extra days and see something of the wild calhab wastes, which means I can't Helltrek it this year, but flights are pretty reasonable Cheaper than trains oddly - I can get up tjere for just £25 but it's £65-£200 to get back, and the cheapest return is also dearer than flying.)
No worries Proudhuff, like I said, figured others here had already done the same thing so was after the inside info.

Bugger - looks like prices have changed since I lasst looked. Going by train now.
Why is buying transport tickets so bloody complicated and illogical in this country?
I have decided to pack in the idea of going by train thanks to the cost and times of them being ridiculous. Now I shall be joining up with the Hell Trek as it travels through the central belt! :D
Happy to see the Helltrek booked up , but the train fares do come down around now if previous year's are anything to go by.
Just had a deek, and one can't book returns until 13 Jan. Normally the tickets come online a silly high prices then tumble, then raise again like some Hollywood franchise.
As a public service I'll keep you updated :D

Get your spindley arse on the Rad-wagon Huff - if it seals the deal I'll save my letter writing workshop until you arrive.
If anyone is looking for the cheapest fares, avoid a website called "raileasy.com" which pops up on a lot of searches - they offered the best price for a return to Inverness, but after selecting train times, seat booking preferences, ticket delivery details and taking card payment details, it then says "one or more parts of your journey are unavailable - please amend your choices" - burt it doesn't tell you which part!
So I spent ages choosing different times, removing restrictive choices such as 'window only' - never got it to pass. Ending up using their timetable info to book tickets on the same trains via thetrainline.com at almost same price, no problem.
I fucking hate internet travel booking and this country's transport system. It's all Thatcher's fault!

This of course is true, but it isn't the whole story. The later memories we
do retain are formed in the context of the memories we still had
then - so, for example, while a child may have no memory of being taken to a waterparkr as very young 'un, the later memories they do recall associated with swimming will have been more positive because they were more familiar and happier with the experience at the time, as opposed to being nervous and unsure.
And ditto Highland comics cons. Not for nothing do the Jesuits say "get 'em while they're fresh".
Good news, everyone!

Hoping to meet some of you fine people. How do you know who fellow boarders are? Is there a secret sign? A cryptic password? Or should I just look in the bar?
Does wearing my kilt count as fancy dress and will I get in cheaper?
How many beer vouchers should I bring and should I eat before I leave home?
None of these important FAQs answered on the website I'm afraid.

How do you know who fellow boarders are? Is there a secret sign? A cryptic password? Or should I just look in the bar?
In the main hall, you can usually find a few hanging around the FutureQuake table, at all other times the bar of the Mercure Hotel.

Plenty and - EAT? Eating's for wimps soldier! Last time the organisers, the exhibitors, guests and forumites went out for a chinese buffet on the Saturday night - I think they booked a table for 80!
Flippi-neck, douneray going as well. Man I really wish I could be there.
Yay Dounreay going too - Steve Frame of Inverness fame - 21 letter to his and his fake names credit - way more than a loser total of, say, 20.
You still going Tom?
Getting really excited for this now.

He's always going to be your superior, Buttman. He's always got that edge. Just accept it and move on.
Nooooo! That crappy drawing has been held over me like an Indian sign for years! Bring back the Readers' Art Tharg! Right this wrong! I can draw! He'd print this classic for sure!

Huff- as I understand it, there will be an FQ presence at Hi-Ex. I did offer my services to tend stall, because then I don't have to do anything strenuous... like 'mingle', 'stand' or 'walk' which would be unthinkable.
I believe something has been organised- so whoever that poor lonely soul is- you're lumbered with me for most of the weekend.

This makes me feel slightly nauseous. It's bad enough that there's no ordering on the publication title, but it looks like there's an extraneous space in the title of Prog 1564.
Good spot Cosh - the actual entry for that date was 'Hampshire' but I abbreviated it for the non-Beastians who know no better. Sadly the board's formatting screwed up my elegant fix.
As for the ordering this was down the the artisans who supplied the original data and was based on complex logarithms derived from many factors, the main one being which box was closed to the attic hatch.

could you get a wee jam donut from greggs and give it to Gary E and tell him that dawn mathieson is sorry she couldn't be there and to say that 'somebody up there like you'. Maybe time the 'you' with the giving of the donut for dramtic effect x
I don't know Dog, that might be a Manchurian candidate type trigger for him shooting the place up. How about a Yum-Yum instead?
lol I would love to see that! Any kind of cake is fine but jam donuts are best donuts :) x
So that's why he wears that one glove at signings.
So he doesn't get sticky fingers from a jam donut!
aww he gets sore fingers and yes, don't want to get ink on your cake and beer x
I might deliberately go up to him with a donut say "this is from Dawn Mathieson" and eat it. Eat the whole donut right in front of him.
He's going to end up with a whole pile of donuts isn't he?

Judge Burdis has finished for the day, now back in street clothes.
Necromancy raised me from the bonepit and I managed to shuffle along to Hi-Ex 2012 with my daughter. Fantastic time had by us both, she got lots of sketches - which I'll post here later tonight - and had some great (but brief) chats with artists.
Saw a few boarders, but didn't want to launch myself at them - King Trout, you had a narrow escape!
Fantastic stuff, and big thanks to Richmond, Vicky and everyone else!

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?
I had a great time. Too many highlights to list them all in a hurry, but my favourite thing was meeting so many good guys for the first time. As usual, however, I have the post-con guilty feeling that I didn't spend enough time chatting with all the people I knew.
Also, I had to leave kind of abruptly so missed my chance to get my copy of Turning Tiger signed by its writer. An unsigned copy is worth twice as much on eBay!

You should have said who you were to a few of us. Were you guy whose daughter got a T-Rex riding a bike from Owen Watts?
I was - she adored it :-)
I said a brief hello to Vicky and Richmond, but I held off introducing myself to anyone I half recognised for fear of the dreaded "you don't know me, but I used to frequent the 2K board" moment ;-)
Trout - I think it was yourself I spoke to briefly outside the venue when we arrived. You were chatting to Jim Alexander, and we were looking for the pre-paid desk.
Sketches, as promised:
A lovely sketched dedication in the cover of "Sybil the Backpack Fairy", courtesy of the charming Michel Rodrigue who smiled politely at my atrocious pronunciation when I thanked him.
Catwoman (my daughter asked for "Catgirl" at first, which caused some confusion!) from Tanya Roberts, who whispered apologetically: "I hope it's not *too* sexy" when we collected her sketchbook :-)
Triceratops, by Graeme Neil Reid, who was most apologetic when a spot of ink seeped through the page, and who spent lots of time chatting to Rhiannon about dinosaurs.
Colin MacNeil's delicate pencil sketch of a brachiosaur. When we popped back to the table and Rhiannon caught a glimpse of the sketch-in-progress her mouth dropped open and she gasped: "You're *really* good at this!". Didn't realise quite how tall Colin was - though the hat added a good few inches :-)
A great T. rex from Nigel Dobbyn. He spent ages chatting to Rhiannon, then gave her a demonstration of how to make your own books and presented her with her own handmade books with a neat Incredible Hulk cover.
Last, but certainly not least, Owen Watts' T. rex on a bike. All the chaps on the Futurequake/Dr WTF/Something Wicked table were great, and getting this sketch made Rhiannon's day.
I managed to chat briefly with John Higgins, and got my copy of the 1985 2K annual signed - it had John's gorgeous colours on the Alan Moore/Steve Dillon ABC Warriors story - got Colin MacNeil's signature on the old Fleetway "Song of the Surfer", accosted Cam Kennedy for his signature on "Kidnapped" (really lovely guy, and I felt terrible for grabbing him when he was wandering about) and got to blether with some other lovely peeps (Jeremy Briggs being the only name that sticks in my mind, but there were many more).
Really successful day for us, and just sad we couldn't make it to the Sunday as well.
I had a fantastic time at Hi-Ex.
It was a pleasure to catch up with those I already know from here and wonderful to finally meet many more forum friends. It was also very cool to chat to the creators in the bar and elsewhere.
I got seven books from the Cinebooks table, Razorjack by John Higgins, Richmond's Turning Tiger, the latest Zarjaz and Dogbreath and the second Dr. WTF?! a badge from Planet Replicas.
My sketchbook now contains a Dredd by crazyfoxmachine, a fantastic Rogue from the super talentled Dode C and a superb Dredd by John Higgins. I also got a great Mechanismo sketch from Colin McNeil and a Graeme Reid Mean Machine sketch. I'll post some pictures soon.
Really lovely weekend - and my ears are yet to recover from the flight! Was wonderful to meet those who I've not before and amazing to see the bright shining gleaming glinting reflective faces of those I've seen a billion times before. Dr WTF did well - and I left a few with dear Dave T the sasquatch lad to sell on today - how did that go, anyone?
Here's our table being watched over by DarkJimbo/James Feist (<-- as people discovered he be named) - Zarjaz was just to the left (sold out of a lot of those - but Bolt was greatly greatly missed!)

What a lovely weekend! Great to see some old faces and meet some new ones. As usual I got rather leathered on the Friday so I was hungover and discombobulated for the rest of the weekend. As for my "disappearance", we'd been turfed out of the hotel bar, loitered around the lobby for a while and then headed out in search of another bar. I thought we were just going round the corner, but when we got half way across town I realised we were never going to find one, so with a slurred seeya later, I began staggering back towards my bed. Nice to know I wasn't missed until later in the takeaway!
Here's a few pics:

It's only libel if you write it down. :)
then I'd best not write any of them down. Shame, as there were some crackers.... :D
Proper good weekend. Crackin' to meet so many boarders for the first time and be able to chat shit about Dredd and the forum into the small hours. Only a shame that I missed so many more or only managed the briefest of hello's, but I'm planning on trying to catch more cons from now on so can hopefully rectify this!
Okay, my take on the weekend.
Friday night, Rob (Gronk Guy) picked me up in our passion wagon and off we went. He'd made sanrnies and everything, what a charmer! We got there at 10.45 to be met by a bar full of drunken, rowdy boarders. Many drinks were had and we went off into the night looking for more drinks and lap dancers, we got neither...
Saturday, or 'Black Saturday' as it shall now be known, was, in the main, a blast. I got to chat to loads of boarders and creators and was thoroughly entertained by John Higgins' Razorjack talk. I got to meet Doug Stanhope who's a bit of a hero of mine. However, this terrific buzz was cut short as I saw my hopes, dreams and aspirations cruelly snatched away, ripped up, trampled on, set on fire then pissed on by an evil, demonic shithouse. I spent much of Black Saturday night putting on a brave face as my fellow boarders offered me support in their own peculiar way, (and imagining Mr Leahy with his head on a block...) No the wonder I mistook banana fritters for chicken bites in the Chinese Restaurant and ate 'em with satay sauce. The night got better however, when I became the meat in a Burdis and Buttonman 3am sandwich, sorry Ben!
Sunday was a quiet affair. I could sense that many of my fellow boarders were a little tearful, like there was a big, block-shaped hole missing in their lives. Judge Vaughn, who I'm tipping to be the next Chief Judge, did a brilliant job of cheering us all up by subjecting us to an appalling movie with hilarious commentary. Tips' reunion with his sketchbook also provided a few scant moments of cheer before the blackness descended on us all again. I left Inverness knowing that the Loch Ness monster is indeed real, however, it comes in the shape of a drunken, hairy, and very loveable Irish fella. Who'd a thunk it?

lets play: Spot the evil, demonic shithouse!

I might deliberately go up to him with a donut say "this is from Dawn Mathieson" and eat it. Eat the whole donut right in front of him.
Foxlol, I did indeed eat a whole jam donought in front of the man, never explained anything, just eat it and left.
Evenin' all!
Managed to get home ahead of the impending snow today. Huge amounts of brownie points to Rich and Vicky for arranging the most marvelous weather for Hiex. Well done!
I had a grand time at the weekend. The craic was most excellent. It was good to see everyone again and a few new faces too.
T-Rex on a bicycle?! Damn! Wish I'd thought of that! :)

If I remember correctly, when Rhiannon was umming & aahing about what to ask for you suggested "bicycle" shortly followed by "dinosaur", so it was nearly there!

Doh! I had two brain cells, but not the sense to rub them together. :D
Brain cells are not for rubbing, that's why god gave you a penis.

The campaign to have Dode C back in the prog should really start here- the man's a topper and he can draw a bit an aw.
He's a class act.
Judge Vaughan Here (Drokk it is anyone going to spell my name right!!!)
Actually it was great to finally put faces to all the names I have seen over the years on this forum and a great honour to meet some of the droids who have made 2000ad what it is .I hope you all enjoyed the vault and I agree with Pete Wells that I should be the next Chief Judge (Hey I'm Incompetent enough) but seriously it was great to meet you guys at last along with artists I have idolized since I was a kid and I was truly left speechless by an act of generosity by Proudhuff (Which for those who know me , being speechless is a rare thing.)
So until we meet again , remember what Pete Wells said "Vote Vaughan for Chief Judge..You know it makes sense!"
Great to meet the legendary recurring character Judge Vorne ;)
I hope you are watching The Swarm this weekend!
It really was a fantastic weekend, greet to meet up with everyone again and finally put faces to several boarders. So by now, after everyone's updates, you will have some idea of the weekend and probably know more about the Friday night then I can remember. The high points of the weekend were definitely fantastic Block War with Pete Wells Block and meeting Doug Stanhope.
First off here are are some of the comics I got there.

Just saw this and LOL. You are so mean. Gary's a very nice man who goes out of his way for 'da fans' at every opportunity and it is such a shame that you wouldn't do the same for him ;) and when hes been so gracious to judge the caption contest this week. hehe Just teasing yahs its all cool. Gary's ma pal and I couldnae make his wifes birthday and thought he might be in need of some general cheering up but ill do it myself next time I see him :) 'somebody up there likes you' is a bowie song on his fave album and we are music pals and no really comic pals bizarrely and in reflection my post sounded crazy stalker so im not surprised you didnt x
and I thought I dropped a lot of letters............ :o
