I decided it was about time I showed off some of the 3D models I've put together over the past few years...
In a blatant attempt to also pimp some of my books, the link below is part of my website for my
New Heroes series.
Aside from vanity, one of the other reasons I'm putting the pics on-line is because I'm looking for suggestions for other 2000 AD-based models. (I'm toying with the idea of tackling the ABC Warriors, but I don't think I'm quite up to such a mammoth task yet!)
It's a graphics-intensive page, so dial-up users beware!

thanks again for letting me use your 3D model on prog 1450 mike.
jock
Great stuff Mike
isnt the LandRaider the coolest toy ever?
> thanks again for letting me use your 3D model on prog 1450 mike.
You're welcome, Jock. It's a great cover!
> isnt the LandRaider the coolest toy ever?
Definitely! I could never afford one when I was a kid, but I bought one on eBay a couple of years ago. It's very bashed-up (doesn't even have the tank threads), but I still love it!
Shame that they never released a Judge Dredd version. Ohh, there's an idea for Termight Replicas...
-- Mike
There's a bloody good idea!
Soner or later I'll pick up a Land Raider, too, and leave it on my dust-gathering shelf...
Nice work, Mike, BTW.
- Trout
Here's another one... (Haven't quite finished the hands yet, which is why they look so stiff.)
-- Mike
Mike, these are great!
I never thought of it before but now I want a toy Hoagy!!
Hello termight Replicas?
Thats ace that is! Yup!
Is that a space spinner he's playing with?
I want a smokeable Stogie.
I still love that Dredd badge- what programs do you use, Mike?
I'm currently using version 6 of Cinema 4D. I got it free with a cover disc years ago. One day - when I'm rich - I'll buy the latest version... Probably.
I'm still looking for suggestions as to what to model next (though Carlos Sanchez Robo-Stogie is very high on the list).
-- Mike
Sticking with the Dredd thing how about a Manta?
Or a Blitzspear?
Yeah, do the Blitzspear!
A Manta would be great, but there's never been a really definitive version, as far as I recall.
So maybe a Blitzspear is on the cards! There's more than one version of that, too, but I'm thinking specifically of the one on the cover of The Complete Nemesis, volume 1.
-- Mike
An O'Neil Blitzspear? Luvverly!
Is there *nothing* you can't do, Mike...?
Work on the Blitzspear will begin shortly!
In the meantime, here's the 2000 AD logo from the "Classic" era...
Zarjaz!
That logo is... just... brilliant!
The best (only?) Manta to use is the one Ian Gibson did as a star scan.........
Either that or it was some other flying Judge type thingy.... :-s
Cam Kennedy did some nice Mantas.
Hey Mike- time to start designing models of the ABC Warriors, might give Rebellion an idea?
Here's the Blitzspear so far... And probably about as far as I'm going to take it! I got seriously fed up trying to figure out the colours and all the little fiddly bits: it seems like every time Mr O'Neill draws a Blitzspear he changes it!
Cheers,
Mike
Amazing! Great job again Mike
Just a thought- you should get together with Steve(I think?) and combine your model with his 3D Nemesis
it seems like every time Mr O'Neill draws a Blitzspear he changes it!
Well, Seth is a living creature encased in armour plating...
Another great job though.
Looks good. Though I have been told myself that it's a puce ( Green like.) colour when I had origiannly drawn a yellow one.
Not really sure about the red fins on the nose.
Nice touch but.
Lookin' good, Mike! The colour scheme seems to match the Starscan from Prog 187, ThyllSeekyr.
That's excellent, Mike. Bloody fast, too!
Thanks, guys!
I'm still not sure whether the bit between the horns is a window or a panel with all sorts of electronic gubbins, but I went for a window because it was easier.
-- Mike
there was some sort of membrane there that Nemesis had to break through..to the cockpit
Someone here had a scan of that origin story...
It's a canopy fitted over the hole in the original creature.
So it is a window once it's been broken in and embalmed in metal.
Cheers,
Steve
I wonder if PETA exists in Nemesis world?
thats pretty fucked up, what they do too Blitzspears
The latest creation...
Nice one Mike,
I started a Ro-Jaws about a month ago, but didn't get much further than the head...
- Steve
Thats excellent Mike- we need to see these animated!
> I started a Ro-Jaws about a month ago, but didn't get much further than the head...
Steve, get in touch if you want the Ro-Jaws model, or any of the others.
In fact, anyone who wants them can have them: the files and accompanying textures are pretty big so I won't be putting them on-line, but I've got lots of blank CD-Roms...
All I ask in return is to be credited if they're used. Oh, and I also everyone to buy my books. And I want unlimited power. And a sandwich.
Cheers,
Mike

Cheers Mike,
I'm sure I'll get round to finishing it - I model the 2000ad stuff as a change from the dull stuff that pays the bills :)
- Steve
In fact, anyone who wants them can have them
You wouldn't be able to export that classic logo as a flat vector EPS file, would you? :D
Sorry, Wils... I don't even know how to do that! But I can give you the 3D file if you like.
-- Mike
Mike shamed me into working some more on my Ro-Jaws - not textured and I still want to do a bit more work on the model.
- Steve
looks great!
Nice one, Steve... Puts mine to shame! (Damn it!)
What software do you use?
- Mike
Hi Mike,
cheers - I love your Land Raider, brings back memories...
I use 3DS Max.
In fact, you might find this thread useful - does Cinema4D have a smooth feature where you can work on a lower polygon mesh, and then subdivide it so it is smoother.
This thread (and it's long and a bit of a ramble) talks about the best way to model so it looks good if you subdivide it afterwards.
It's mainly useful for mechanical stuff, but it really helped when it comes to modeling that way.
Cheers,
Steve
Link: Techy modeling stuff
Sorry, Wils... I don't even know how to do that! But I can give you the 3D file if you like. That's ok. I haven't got anything that'll open it at the mo, for a start!
I've got redrawing the logos as vectors on my list of things to do, actually. A few years ago, I redrew the Robin Smith Dredd badge and it's been used of some of the character profile pages. Unfortunately, I've lost the bloody EPS files now, so can't do any more. I can't remember if I sent them to any other boarder, but I suppose I could always redo it. Perhaps some of us could get together and come up with some kind of 2000ad resource for these kind of things?
I've done some Rogue stuff, which turned out ok, and am yet to finish off redrawing the proper Dredd logo. As well as redrawing the original, I'm also attempting an updated version as well. Although I've no idea how it's going to be when it's finished, so far the 'J' has turned out better than I expected, at least. :)
Wils,
This might be handy: Check out my website for my Judge Dredd font!
Link: Mike's other website
Steve,
Thanks for the link - I don't even know what some of these guys are talking about... I can see that I've still got a lot to learn about modelling!
> does Cinema4D have a smooth feature where you can work on a lower polygon mesh, and then subdivide it so it is smoother.
I'm sure that the more recent versions have a mesh snoother, but I can't find anything like that in version 6! I've been using it on and off for a couple of years now, but it's only in the past month that I've been spending serious time on it.
3DS Max looks the business, but it's way out of my price league!
Cheers,
Mike
Ah, there's always stuff to learn.
Looking around, it might be called HyperNURBS in C4D if it's there at all.
Yeah, Max is expensive - although if you're doing lots of paid work with it, then it pays for itself soon enough.
That said, Softimage XSI have a good range of packages from the Foundation version for a few hundred quid upward.
Cheers,
Steve
In light of Steve's infuriatingly good Ro-Jaws model, I decided to give mine elbows, and a slightly more reflective texture...
You scutterganging polymath bastardos. Massive stuff! Suck-heil!
Thanks!
Er.. I think.
Thanks!
Er.. I think.
The latest...
(Must put Ro-Jaws, Water and Hoagy together in some sort of amusing scenario.)
-- Mike
Haven't you got books to write..?
> Haven't you got books to write..?
I've already written them.
ThrillSuckers:)
Can you draw Tharg himself.
Looking at Mike's models of Walter and Ro-Jaws, you have to be struck by how plausible the design of both robots seems. Wouldn't be at all surprised to find a Walter-alike dispensing coffee at a service station forecourt before my days are up. McWild's animation of RoJaws also has a disturbingly realistic Segway vibe to his motion.
ThryllSeekyr asks:
> Can you draw Tharg himself.
Yes, I can! (Though it's pretty easy: the head is just modified from a Poser figure).
-- Mike
I've already written them.
But I demand MORE!!
Seriously though- these models are great!
Isn't that just T'ealc (or however you spell it) after a bad curry?
if you ever deside to take requests the please do the rufus dayglo meg 246 cover Lawgiver MkII as its the only version of the MkII I really think is any good all the bulky big gunness that every one seems to like these days whist retaining the stylish and classic feel of the various MkI styles (Ezquerra/McMahon/Bolland/Dillon)
the current "cannon" version is just... well, too boxie
Ezquerra has just not got it right in fact the only artist who has got the style for the "cannon" version is Cliff Robinson who accually makes me like the MkII
oh yes Bloody well done on the dredd Badge its Brilliant
Today's model...
Also, check the link below to download an animated version (wmv format)!
Cheers,
Mike

'crap-on-a-bike!' There's some talent flowing the veins of some people...bloody amazing.
Please, please get your creative heads together and make a short fan-flick...
Feck me but that is one fine animation - between the Nemesis, Ro-Jaws and Justice 1 animations, it's like the toothverse is slowly coming alive. Now do the Hungry Planet and some of those nuclear mines!
Looks great Mike! I cant open the animted version though- its just a screen full of code to me
Looks great Mike! I cant open the animted version though- its just a screen full of code to me
I had the same problem. Right clicking the link and choosing "Save Target As.." worked for me.
Ooh nice!
awwww, yeah!
These are great, and TordelBack's suggestion of the Hungry Planet and nuclear mines is an inspired suggestion, so hop to it. We expect it to be on our desktops by Monday morning!
Seriously, these are fantastic, and would make for some lovely animated 2K adverts to throw around the interweb like Thrill-Powered confetti :-)
I'll throw my request in now - a Strato-V getting the Stub Gun treatment. Please?

Bloody hell!
This is getting ridiculous!!!
Awesome stuff.
Thanks one and all!
Here's the same thing with much nicer rendering: 3D motion blurring... It looks almost identical to the first version, but it took ten times as long to render. If I have to suffer through that then so do you.
The file is about 1.3mb (twice the size of the previous version).
Cheers,
Mike
Link: Chopper again - only nicer this time.
That's great Mike - shame the motion blur takes so long...
Maybe you could try reducing the shutter to reduce the blur slightly and see if there are options to reduce the samples used? I've never used C4D but most programmes let you reduce the quality to speed it up.
- Steve
I really appreciate seeing head of Tharg.
Thanks for acting on my request. Good show. I owe you one, there.
BTW, the Justice City One and both animations of Marlon 'Chopper' Shakespeare flying towards me at break neck speed is a sight to behold.
Mind you.........
Could you possibly mix those with soud samples?
I mean with the Judge Jet and Marlon whooshing towards you.
With the first, I would imagine the sound of a Harrier Jump Jet taking off.
With the second, I would imagine the sound of mega city babble and traffic. The sound of wind blowing fast at the high alttitudes and then whoosh with some sort of doppler effect.
I got some movie sound effects CD's. ( For radio plays.) I could ripp some sound samples off for you, though I'm not sure if vailating copyrigth protections. Then again, I guess thats what the CD is meant for.
Being used.
Link: I don't know, some sound source archive.....
Thanks for the link, ThryllSeekyr!
You're right - sound makes a huge difference, even to tiny clips like this! I usually find sound harder to get right than graphics, which is why I always leave it to the end!
But I'll try to set aside some time to add sound to these clips (I might even steal some Mega-City One sound effects from the Big Finish CDs!)
Cheers,
Mike
A very short clip of the Blitzspear in action...
Link: Blitzspear!
That's impressive!!!!!!!
I'm assuming you ddi slow it down to showcase it's appearance.
I have always imagined the old Bliztspear to be very swift.
i just get a screen full of strange symbols
me too- you have to rightclick and save it to your pc
wow!! thats brilliant!
HOLY FLURKING SHNITT!!
Mike that is ace!
Bolt-01
Thanks guys!
Thryllseekyr, you're right. The Blitzspear should be a lot faster, but that was about as fast as I could get it and still have it visible: the explosion in the background was culled many years back from a movie (stolen frame-by-frame using my DVD software's "capture a single frame very slowly" function). If I'd chosen to use a different background, I could have moved the camera along with the Blitzspear (like I did with the Chopper clip).
I'm going to have a go at creating some Termight-like tunnels along which the Blitzspear can travel at a great speed - should be fun!
Cheers,
Mike
Cool idea Mike. I dont know if this is any use but heres a free animation of a tunnel in Flash

I wish...
Here's a clip of the Blitzspear in a tunnel. It's not very sophisticated yet...
As before, right-click on the link and select "Save Link As..." or "Save Target As...". That kinda thing.
Cheers,
Mike

Only one possible reaction to that animation: hubba HUBBA!
It's so good seeing these characters come to life!great stuff Mike
Now that was waaaaaaaaaaaaay cool!!!!!
Wow.
I need some feedback!
The past few days I've been pottering around with my Judge's Helmet model and I'm getting closer to something that isn't entirely rubbish... But no matter how much I tinker with it, it never looks quite right (of course, it doesn't help that every artist draws it differently...).
At the moment it looks pretty good from the side, but I'm not happy with the front and three-quarter views.
Any suggestions on how to make it better would be much appreciated!
-- Mike
Hi Mike,
I think it's maybe the scale of the visor, the gap between the inverted V and the side the helmet, maybe make the whole helmet a bit narrower from the front view.
Good start though.
- Steve
I was just wondering which Joe Dredd you are basing this one on.
It does look good, though there is something not quite right about the face.
Perhaps the mouth needs to be little bigger. There mayb e room for few more character lines.
Though I'm not tryiing knock your design, just offering alittle constructive critism.
I was just wondering which Joe Dredd you are basing this one on.
Considering it's Mike's 3D model of a Judge's helmet, I'd hazard a guess at "none".
Steve: Good thinking. I'll narrowise the helmet and see if it looks any better!
Thryllseekyr: The face is only temporary - but you're right, he definitely needs to look older and more grizzled!
Cheers,
Mike
I just thought the mouth looks alittle flat.
The lips should jut out at angle as well as the chin.
It looked a little 'winged out' on the bottom to me, but I know nothing.
Guys, thanks for the feedback... Here's the modified helmet, with which I'm a lot happier! I've reduced the "standoutyness" of the red parts, pulled the edges of the face plate closer to the centre, and darkened the blue bits a little.
I still need to fix where the respirator meets the top of the helmet, but that's a relatively easy job.
-- Mike
I think that the nose pieces look better if they appear to be a continuation of the red lines above the eyes.
Cheers,
Wake
Link: Termight Replicas
yeah- they should be on the same arc
looking really good though so far
I personally prefer the cross to drop slightly, giving more space to the dark bits of the visor.
Something like this...
Admittedly, it would probably look shit in 3-D!
very nice wooly
Thankyou!
Its a clip from a slightly larger piece, but nowhere near finished and way too many fuck ups.
I dread to think just how difficult the 3-D modelling would be to do, i find it hard enough just to draw stuff.
Hats off to everything on this thread, seriously!
I am in awe of it!
Steve Dillon used to draw his helmets like that too. The top line of the red stripe is still in line with the top edge of the nose piece - it's just that the line is narrower so the lower edge is different.
Cheers,
Wake
Y'know, i think thats where i got it from...
Cant beat a bit o' Dillon Dredd!
Fantastic work Mike!
Anyone else imagining a CGI TV series for Dredd?
In 'real-life' wouldn't the 'red cross' obscure his line of sight?
Thanks you all for your kind words! I'm not a great artist or modeller - I know there are people on this board who could do this better and in less half the time, but I think I've got it right now (well, as right as I want it to be!).
For the "nose bits" in the centre I decided to match Wake's judge helmet, so they're now a continuation of the "eyebrow bits".
I've also increased the size of the gold part of the respirator, also to match's Wake's version.
-- Mike
Here's a work-in-progress shot of the latest creation...
Here's something that I desperately wanted back in 1977...
The second last picture of Judge Dred is near perfect.
Except the upper lip looks way too narrow,
The mouth could be abit smaller,
The chin could be alittle more pointy and jutt out more.
Otherwise it's a pretty good render.
I was also wondering if bothat picture of Judge Dred and Johhnny Alpha were based on real life models?
People you know.
Was there a Judge Dredd action figure like that back then ordi you just make that one up?
More grea twork, Mike. The crease in the corner of the packaging is pure genius.
On the excellent Johnny head, it's worth noting that the boss on the front of his helmet is a vid-camera, complete with removable slugs- so some form of aperture and hinge-line would work well as detail.
> Was there a Judge Dredd action figure like that back then ordi you just make that one up?
Unfortunately it's not real. But it should have been!
Can we get that image as a wallpaper anywhere?
Mike,you're a genius loving thr ro-jaws.
toy biz! ro-jaws,series 4 now!!
"In 'real-life' wouldn't the 'red cross' obscure his line of sight?"
I've always thought of them as being opaque, like a two way mirror.
> Can we get that image as a wallpaper anywhere?
Which one do you mean? The Dredd toy or the close-up? Either way, let me know and I can render one for you in your desired resolution!
Cheers,
Mike
I've always thought of them as being opaque, like a two way mirror.
Hmmm, me too, but now I think about it, that doesn't gel with how the visor breaks - witness City of the Damned and even Origins.
actually the jock cover...it's awesome(if a thirty something man can say "awesome")
"I've always thought of them as being opaque, like a two way mirror.
Hmmm, me too, but now I think about it, that doesn't gel with how the visor breaks - witness City of the Damned and even Origins."
Aren't they supposed to be nose guards, like on a Spartan helmet.
1977: The Mighty One introduces his new line of 2000 AD Action Figures...
Notice how Judge dredd has dropped his gun while Giant still has the ball.
Unbelievably great suff - great Living Axe accessory, lovely touch with the peg-holes intact/removed!
Aren't they supposed to be nose guards, like on a Spartan helmet.
Well yeah, but their position in many, many versions would seem to partly block the wearers vision - which I imagine many real-world noseguards do too, but must be unacceptable for a judge. Hence the suspicion that they may be transparent from the inside.
"Hence the suspicion that they may be transparent from the inside."
Nah, I don't buy it.
I notice the dredd one has a"removable helmet"
is that the one danny cannon would have got for christmas?
> I notice the dredd one has a"removable helmet"
> is that the one danny cannon would have got for christmas?
Heh! I thought it would be a nice touch if it looked as though the toys were designed by someone who didn't quite "get" the comic... Hence Dredd's lack of elbow pads and proper gloves.
And did anyone notice what's in Tharg's left hand?
And did anyone notice what's in Tharg's left hand?
Yup- nice touch!
Love the design of these- just like the 'real thing' as it were, with the gloves being their hands painted that colour.
Somebody should do these! there are reproduction mego space 1999 "action figures" out there and they're re-doing the star trek ones as well.Get pimping these to the right people.
Wow Mike, those action figures look bloomin' great. How i ish Tharg had had the vision to do something like that back then eh! I reckon a Bill savage one with his "shooter" and a series of Flesh dino's would've made my day.
Cheers,
Rob.
Thanks for the kind words, guys... I've been toying with the idea of adding to the line-up: MACH One, Bill Savage and Earl Regan (from Flesh) are the obvious additions.
But they're a little more tricky to create because of the clothing (it's easier to fake skin-tight costumes than loose-fitting clothing) and because they're not instantly recognisable.
I want to restrict the line-up to only characters that appeared in 1977 (so nothing after prog 45).
That does give us quite a few great characters, though: Mr Monday, Rok, the Mekon, and the two-headed guy from Dan Dare whose name I don't remember, Hitman, Bear, Call-me-Kenneth, Walter the Wobot, Dredd in his Lunar Marshall outfit, a whole bunch of Harlem Heroes (pretty easy to do now that I have Giant), Claw Carver, Silk (from Invasion)...
But the one who absolutely
has to be done is the Harlem Heroes's arch enemy Artie Gruber!
Now if only there was some way to turn them from 3d models on the PC into real toys that we can play with...
-- Mike
Link: www.megomuseum.com
Here's the original and Deluxe Edition variants of the Tharg figure...
luna-marshal dredd would be easy, new badge ad a cape, you missed a treen(mekons lot)soldier and talking of bears is shako eligible?
Thanks for the link, Steve. I've been looking for that - it's a very tempting process!
Mogzilla - you want Treens? You're in luck! Next step is to "action-figureise" them... But here's what they look like at the moment (though I've kind of got a feeling that apart from the Mekon there weren't any actual Treens in
2000 AD in 1977 - I can't remember when Sondar appeared but I'm pretty sure it was much later).
While thats a great render of Mekon and his cronies, I don't approve of the angle.
Er... What's wrong with the angle?
looks fine to me. loving this thread by the way mike...
Great render, but it looks like the Mekon's got huge testicles.
Apologies if that's what you intended. :)
Er... What's wrong with the angle?
Perhaps it is creating horrible public school related flashbacks..?
> it looks like the Mekon's got huge testicles.
That's just shadows! I swear! In fact, he actually has no genitalia at all. (But still, giant nuts would be appropriate for the character.)
Here's a different - not offensive - angle...
Looks more like Mekon's got camel toe. Those Treens look great, but Mekon needs to look weedier and smaller.
Okay, here's the weedier and smaller Mekon - specially for Garageman!
And here's the much-sought-after Bill Savage action figure...
I've looked all over ebay and I can't find these! god damn it anyway
Not sure if I can afford £2.951/2p times 4, when are there going to be cheaper continental knock-offs?
Why I disapprove of the angle. Becuase that not why I might be interested in buying any Magazines featuring Mekon.
Nice one, Johnnystress - I should have thought of that myself! Our local newsagents used to have a great stock of "Spider-Hero" and "Speiderman" action figures. One of them was even an official "Marval" product.
I liked the "Returned Warrior" Spawn ripoff!
Artie Gruber - work in progress (which, of course, he always was).
Now who wouldn't want one of these?
Dredd with a smile?!?!?! WTF ;-)
Those are absolutely fantastic Mike! Thanks for an amazing thread!
Come on Steve/McWild! We need a dance off style 3D modelling thread where you and Mike battle it out for 3d supremacy and we all get treat to some amazing visuals!
Excellent Mike!
I just realised that Artie bears a slight resemblence to 'Somewhere in Time' era Eddie The Head
kind of..
Lego Dredds with different expressions (plus a bonus prisoner). I still think Smiley Dredd is the cutest.
As for Pete's idea of a dance-off-style 3D modelling battle - No way! McWild's a thousand times better at this than I am.
Johnny: you're right about the resemblance between Artie and Eddie - I never spotted that before. And
Somewhere in Time was released way after Artie Gruber first appeared...
thanks mike,thats now my wallpaper!
I really want to get back into it, but I've been busy with work for the past few months.

Hi all, some really nice work on here i'm impressed! I scratchbuilt a model of the Blitzspear a couple of years ago and thought some of you here might like it: //http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m273/incrediblefruit1968/Blitzspear.gif
//http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m273/incrediblefruit1968/blitspear_side.jpg
Heres another not quite finished one, but ready for a show-off i think
(//http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v57/woolly/hammersteinsml.jpg)
That is a thing of beauty! If I had a hat on, I'd take it off to you. I look forward to seeing it with all the finished details. How long did it take you?
The only teeny tiny suggestion would be that the forehead's a little tall - Hammerstein has never been what you'd call a thinker and he just looks a bit too cerebral - but if you shrunk the forehead, the whole head may look too small, so what do I know?
Outstanding! In any future revisions remember that Hammerstein has three little lights in his belly, secondary arm mounts at the base of his ribs, and odd little laser things on top of his hips. No-one else does.
Bit of an update. Changed the arms to be a bit more Kev Walker-ish, not sure if its worked though...
Will take the ideas on board!
That is looking very nice indeed... (I've been tempted to create a Hammerstein model but every time I think about how complex it'll be I come down with a sudden attack of laziness.)
Loving the Dredd bust. Very nice stuff indeed.
A couple more for you... again, nothings finished. Just a preview

it blows my feeble old fashioned brain that you guys can do this stuff, I fantasize about being able to put characters in 3D so I can then move them around anatomically correctly to use for 2D references... but would have an aneurysm at one glance at the software required.
Are these all Zbrush, Woolly? I really fancy getting Zbrush myself, but it means either investing in a new Mac, or a PC that I'll only use for Zbrush.
They look great, by the way.
Mainly using 3DS Max Design, but with the help of Zbrush every now and then for a more 'clay-like' approach to the modelling.
If your worried about the performance of Zbrush on a low-end Pc - dont!
Due to the incredibly small program size (30 megs or so!) I can happily work on a model with a million polys on my 5 year old PC (1GB memory, old GForce graphics card, single 2.2 processor), which in comparison would make 3DS Max fall flat on its arse and run out of memory.
If nothing else its a great, fun, yet incredibly powerful program to play on and i couldnt recommend it more!
Follow this for a gallery of Zbrush stuff....
//http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/gallery/
I haven't got a PC- so I'd have to buy one and then buy ZBrush. Ahhh... maybe one day...
Those models are great Woolly. Mongrol is coming along nicely. Z-brush appear to have a free trial so it would seem churlish not to have a play. Cheers for the link.

Z•Brush is capable of the most amazing results, but five minutes with their brain-meltingly retarded GUI and I start bleeding from the eyes and have to give up!
Cheers
Jim
Z-Brush is fun but they do need to read the book on designing interfaces. It took me ages just to find where to save things as it's not intuitive at all.
Nice to play with though!
-Bouwel-
Is that ZBrush 2 or 3? I hear good things about the interface for 3.
I've tried ZBrush 3. I will say that the video tutorials on the Pixologic site are very good, much better than the downloadable in-line help.
With those tutorials it would have become very frustrating very quickly but, there again, I have little patience.
Give it a go as see what you think
-Bouwel-
Okay, last bit of showcasing from me for a while. This is a half zbrush half photoshop effort.
Hope you like it
(//http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v57/woolly/zbrushrender6evensmaller.jpg)
Nice work
-Bouwel-
(Who thinks he's one of a very few people who doesn't like Slaine!)
I like that Woolly, good stuff.
Good work Wool.
Cheers for the kind words gents
I've just noticed that ive worked on a render with no perspective though, which is making it look like Ukko's face is bulging out on one side so expect an updated pic soon...
Here you go. A little less photoshop work this time, be good to hear what you think...
I like it- but I think I'd try to make some of the sculpting sharper (says the man who's never even tried to use ZBrush!). The ears in particular look a bit soft, if you know what I mean. Still looking pretty good, mind.
Have you got a snap of the original sculpt without any photoshop?
That's looking pretty darned good, Woolly - though I think I prefer the first version!
I downloaded the ZBrush demo and it completely did my head in! Couldn't get the hang of it at all... I guess I should probably view the tutorials or read the help or something.
In the meantime, here's something I've been meaning to do for ages...
(Don't worry - he's not naked. He's wearing socks).
He's naked! Despite what you say!!
*faints*
-Bouwel-
Very good work btw
It's the Barp version of the Uncanny Valley there Mike! Amazing work.
Also, despite strenuous mental exercises, one's dirty mind is drawn to speculate on what else might be pointy.
For the sake of Ace's modesty, here's the PG version:
Still have to add Ace's animated scarf, though...
ha ho that looks great!
That Ace truly is ace
He actually looks alive!
Finally got the scarf done...!
Woolley?
Would that be Ukko?
Dumb question.
I know it is, him, right?
Interesting approach, charictureistic,
Would that also be western, steampunk or Elizabethian apparel he's wearing?
Also like Mike Caroll's Ace garp and his large friend.
Better with clothes on though.
Loving the Ace Garp now he's fully dressed with his animated scarf. Good work!
-Bouwel-
QuoteThat Ace truly is ace

And the GBH looks really dead. Result!
I attempted a Ukko in Spore.......
Before the full game was released just using the Creature Creator....
And last night with the full game using the clothing option that available at Civilisation stage...
It's actaulley standing up in all of these pictures, though the application of parts of clothing might have some poeple thinking otherwise.
There's a little bit of leprechaun going on around the hat area but very good!
-Bouwel-
Yeah, that's good stuff TS.
Oh, I was really aiming for the Leprehaun theme however inaccurate it may be for Ukko.
As Spore just doesn't have anything more specific.
As for the colouring, it's difficult, as you just can't colour the diffrent part indicidually, you have a choice betwent stripey, poker dot pattarns, just are that uneven patches of colur of your choice.
Which is why it has shades of green ( from it's clothing.) and yellow ( From it's hair.) on it's face.
Then again, when your painting a vechile or building this isn't such a problem.
I don't know what the creators of Spore meant by placing such a uneven set of restrictions in this game.
About Ace Garp sans clothing.
Mike Carroll reassures us that.......
QuoteDon't worry - he's not naked. He's wearing socks).
Were you hinting about what Jim Carrey used to do on SNL. I remebr his um sock segment.
Despite some other similarities,
I thought there was touch of Steve Martin inthat image. Partically with his facial expression.

Purely a coincidence - and definitely no inspiration from or homage to Jim Carrey on SNL!
And now, rounding up the crew of the Speedo Ghost...

Can you do Roc from the old Dan Dare stories next, please?
-Bouwel-
(Well, it's worth a request!)
Thats a good one, especialley the teeth.
Flicking through the brand new 'Ace Trucking Volume one as i'm not that familar with these stories.
I notice that your version has more flesh on it's bones.

Terrific model, but... Anastasia she ain't!
Oh, I say, well Gronked that man! That's superb.
The space fort is good too, though I always thought it a clunky and inelegant design for a spaceship - the 'Eagle' shuttles were much cooler!
Stunning Gronk-ness there...well done!
-Bouwel-
Brilliant! Now do a version with that sinister mouth and tongue. Dance, monkey, dance!
Thanks, guys!
I based the pose on an Ezquerra sketch over at www.200oad.org (http://www.200oad.org) (//http://www.2000ad.org/functions/image.php?Comic=artwork&choice=Ezquerra_Gronk) which, incidentally, doesn't feature the Gronk's full complement of arms, so I decided to stick with just the two.
I did debate whether to include his stomach-mouth thingy, but decided he was cuter without it.

Mike have you ever used Blender?
It looks good (free), however I am a complete beginner and am looking for something to learn with / mess around with.
I tend to use Ubuntu more and more now and am not sure what else is available that would run on it besides this.

I completely agree: I'm currently re-reading 2000AD from the beginning, and the Spacefort is the least interesting of all the ships in
Dan Dare. I constructed the Eagle model ages ago...
... but most of Mr Gibbons' designs from the strip are excellent, and I've added quite a few of them to my "must do" list. The
Crusader in particular is a beautiful ship, so that'll probably be next up!
See the "3D Graphics" page on my website for pretty much all the work to date:

Hi Martin,
I haven't used Blender, but maybe it's time I gave it a shot... It certainly looks impressive!

Stunning, but be careful you don't step on that.
I don't have the faintest idea about CGI.

Excellent work Mike!
Wow!
Nice one Mike, looking really good.
Are you still using C4D? Looks like you're getting the hang of HDRI maps etc.
Cheers
Steve
Thanks for all the nice words, everyone!
Steve: Yep, I'm still using Cinema 4D. I finally figured out the Global Illumination settings so I can now get pretty accurate renders in a reasonable amount of time - plus I've picked up a few tricks here and there about light scattering, texturing and the like.
And it's pretty much all thanks to you: without your stunning work to spur me on (that is: make me jealous) I'd never have got this far... I've learned more from trying to catch up with you than I could ever have learned on my own - I still watch your showreel every now and then to remind myself how far I've yet to go!
Cheers,
Mike
Ah, cheers - glad I could help
Borag Thungg everyone!
Mike Carroll pointed me this way, I'm teaching myself Blender and I've currently got a Ro-Jaws in progress, will post pics when he's a bit more than just a green blob
Introduction time: My name's Mark, age thirty-mumble, living in Leeds where I work as a web-monkey and coder. I started on 2000AD back at prog 7 IIRC, drifted away in the mid 80s though. (The thrill suckers got to me I guess lol.)

If anyone's interested, you can keep up with my progress there.

I quite like seeing things develop on this thread, but often don't bother following links. Just let us know when there's a significant development and I'll look in.
Thanks

Anyhoo, I've made the teeth look even more manky: rust toward the points and greenish grime at the "gums". Head temporarily removed to show teeth in full disgusto-mode
Link as previous post.
I found a great UV painting tutorial here (//http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=46&t=373024&page=1)
That's Mr Dontdare to you!
Nice teeth. I took a peek at that tutorial but when I read sentences like:
"After laying out a good set of UV's (in this case nothing but a planar map) I render an ambient occlusion pass inside 3DSMAX.all I actually hear is:
After laying out a good set of rhubarb (in this nothing but a rhubarb rhubarb) I rhubarb a rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb inside the rhubarbI'm glad there are people like you and Mike Carroll out there who know how to make pretty things to entertain the likes of me, but it means nowt to me - may as well be witchcraft!

Now that I like :D
Great stuff Mike. Working in education, I have access to Autodesk programs including Maya and 3ds Max, both of which I've tried out. I've also experimented with the horrible-to-learn blender and it's all way to complex and non-intuitive to use that I've pretty much given up on it all. As a result people who can do this stuff are like wizards to me and it really impresses me no end.
I can make a disc out of a sphere in wings3d
Dog - I've checked out Blender a couple of times... it really is incredibly confusing! I'm using Cinema 4D version 10. It's a few years out-of-date but I've never found anything else that's as powerful AND as easy to use. One day, when I'm rich, I'll upgrade to the latest version...
