Books & Comics / Re: Whats everyone reading?

CBR's Comic's should be good just finished a top 75 writers and artists list (top 40 artists, top 35 writers) and I was mighty pleased to see how high Grant Morrison was on the list, coming in at number 4.

http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2014/06/06/75-greatest-batman-writers-and-artists-master-list/

When you consider who topped him that's about as high as he could have realistically placed. Now he has modernity on his side so it'd be interesting to see where he settles in a few years but I think its a brilliant run. One that just kept getting better and better as it went on. I didn't think it had found quite the appeal this poll suggests it had though as I thought it was more hit and miss in the way people took to it (not with me but generally). Can't wait to get to my planned re-read, though I will have to some way down my to read list alas.

Of course that Alan Grant (no. 8) and Norm Breyfogle (no. 5) didn't top their respective list is of course an utter travesty as, like at least one other board member I can think of, its for me the definitive Batman run and quite, quite superb!

Books & Comics / Saga

Now I promise I'm not being snarky here but I am genuinely curious. I know Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples' Saga has some big fans on the board and I'm curious to find out why people think its so damned good.

Now don't get me wrong I enjoy it, I've just read the third collection and enjoyed it as much as I have the other two, which is to say quite a bit BUT not a load. I'll keep getting the trades while they offer such a good deal. For the life of me though I can't think why people hail it the best thing out there. Not saying people here do, just people who have very good taste seem to think its pretty damned smashing and I struggle with why that is.

To me while the designs of the characters is pretty damned fine and otherworldly. There interactions and aren't and seem pretty grounded, at times the leads are a little irritatingly sassy and or hipster. That might be the point. These fantastic looking creatures, but at heart we're all just folk and we know there's nowt as quire as folk. Maybe trying to juxtapose those two things is what its getting at? To me I just find it a little jarring. It doesn't quite fit. The world could be wonderful and imaginative but it doesn't feel that way. The characters are solid but not mind blowing. They don't really give me great insight, or reflection.

Many of the beasties, characters and aliens seem to be built on a thought 'Oh wouldn't it be cool if.' and not really get to much beyond that. Lying Cat, mah, robot telly fella, mah, jadded cool bounty hunter type, wooden spaceship...not so much for me... etc etc.

Its an engaging action romance romp but its not, to me at least, powerful or profound. Maybe its not meant to be and I'm over looking for things.

So yeah as I say I see why people like it, I do. I'm just curious as to why people LOOOOVVVEEEEE it, which I miss.

Have to say the Mortis and Fear badges remind me a lot of Frank Cho. Not saying I think he's done the designs for the Tee Shirts, but just those images.

Books & Comics / Re: Calvin and Hobbes documentary

Nowt more to say really but since we have a chorus of praise for Calvin and Hobbes I can do nothing more than join in. One of the greatest things known to man. Both gloriously funny and beautifully drawn. I was introduced it back in the day as a friends parents got The Express (always such a shame you had to get that rag to see it!) and I eventually tracked down a collection, I think there was only three at the time and then waited feverishly for the next to come along.

The art is simply some of the best ever, a cat has never looked so elastic with Watterson's glorious lines.

Its to the man's enormous credit that he's never let it become anything other than what it is a brilliant comic strip. He must have had frustrated business types banging at his door at the opportunities he was turning down but he wanted it to remain what it was. Just fantastic.

As for favourites

and being a sentimental old goat the last ever strip always... well there's always a lot of dust getting into my eyes when I read that one!

Its worth saying before I start that I'm far from the biggest Rogue fan on the board. Never really got on with the original run and while I enjoy Cinnabar its far from John Smith's best work. I'd always welcome more John Smith in the Prog, nah I'd love to have more John Smith BUT if that is to happen it seems a shame to shackle his magnificent imagination to a concept like Rogue Trooper (though of course Mr Smith will be the only one to say if he would really feel shackled by it).

John Smith creates wondrous worlds, why have him work in anyone else's?

Also have to be honest the most fun I've had with Rogue, possibly outside War Machine which I really enjoyed, was the Gordon Rennie stuff. That really worked for me but he seems to realise (again I'm sure if he could be bothered he'll correct me there!) that Rogue is about the least interesting thing on Nu Earth.

Nope, but good guess. That's the Brendan McCarthy story from somewhere in the 500s, isn't it? Brian De Vimto's fate occurs somewhere in the 300s.

There's a lot of potential fates during that period so I'm going to hedge my bets and see if I get away with.

While turning into a werewolf, he gets shot by a stupid gun coursing him to get Mean mean and getting a face full of 4. Dazed he wonders into the path of a mechanical football team and is filmed as they trample him. The resulting lack of face coursing him to loose an election to an orangutan. As if not down on his luck enough an alien bounty hunter gives chase with his doggie things whose name neither he nor I can remember. Exhausted he grabs a syni-hot dog which inflates him to the point where he was about to explode, but just before he does a dinosaur chomps him in one.

As if that's not enough shite out by the mesothermic predator many years later he falls victim to vampire judges before being shot by a blind Dredd...

...phew gotta have it covered somewhere there?

Music / Re: What's everyone listening to...?

I do indeed remember Velodrome 2000. There were a lot of great bands around Sheffield at that time. Personal favourites include Seafruit - the lead singer (I think he was) went in to manage The Attic Monkeys - he owned the upstairs bit of The Forum to as I recall, Pig 64, Chick Legs Weaver and a band whose band began with M but I can't quite remember. Bit like Mogawi but not Mogawi.

That was before Screaming Mini's time, they played their first gig in June 2004 at my mate Dave's 30th birthday. Though in those days Jeff and Marti and a few other friends were in a band called Action Speculator nee Love Walrus Attack (terrible name).

As for Corporation, while I'm the last person to ask about the Sheffield club scene these days I can confirm that its still there... or at least still puts flyers out and about. Many of the best venues alas are no more. The Earl has gone as has The Broadwalk and most sadly The Grapes.

Good find - not the best interview though! That's them minus Jeff (he was holiday as I recall) from a while ago (alas parenthood for 4 of the band has done for them).

Shame Electric Thighs one of their singles isn't there still as it was a fine video (clips in that interview) and good song. You can get it on Spotify, wonder what else is there. Have all their stuff on CD so never checked out what's around these days.

Oh hold on their MySpace is still there. Cool four songs there.

What say we merge this thread with this one, hmm?

I haven't heard Lush in donkey's. http://youtu.be/buz5D8OWmRc

Ha! Funnily enough I listened to just this record (on CD single) just the other day. My daughter was intrigued by the cover. Anyway aside from really enjoying it and making me want to dig out a copy of Spooky it struck me how much it sounded like Screaming Mimi.

Who are Screaming Mimi, why don't you know Sheffield early 2000's local band scene? They are a band of my friends Jeff, Marti, Mark, Laureta and Jon and they played at our wedding. They really were very good.

Wow well the pot for this one if certainly staggering now. Seems silly to pick out favourites but how glorious is that  Dante page?
