Has anyone received their Dredd mug yet?
I haven't even had confirmation of my order!

Film & TV / Name that Sci-Fi special!
21 August, 2008, 07:52:17 PM
I hope someone on this board can help. I'm trying to find out the title of a TV film that was on sometime during the mid to late eighties.
The story concerned (as far as I can remember) two brothers - a good one and an evil one.
The good brother was an inventor and he built robots. I think he was terminally ill and he was building his own coffin which had a glass lid.
The evil brother wanted the good one to die so he could have his money or something - I can't really remember.
The story ended up with the bad brother somehow getting into the glass lidded coffin which then sprouted wheels and drove out into the garden. Blades came out of the bottom and the coffin dug itself into the ground, burying the evil brother alive. The little robot helper watched while holding an umbrella.

Can anyone provide anymore details?

Books & Comics / Frank Bellamy's Robin Hood
18 August, 2008, 05:56:57 PM
I saw this for sale in the SF and Fantsasy book club leaflet that was in this month's meg. I'm not going to join a book club but my question is has anyone read these stories and is this collection worth picking up?

Film & TV / Remakes you'd like to see!
13 August, 2008, 06:12:05 PM
We've had a few topics lately concerning films that are being pointlessly remade.
Are there any films you think could benefit from a big budget remake?

I'd love to see a modern remake of 'Logan's Run'. I like the old version but it hasn't aged well - the sets look a bit wobbly and that robot, though sort of awesome, doesn't seem like a credible threat.

Another I'd like to see is (don't laugh) 'Battle Beyond the Stars'. It's basically  'The Magnificent Seven' in space. Surely there's room for some awesome space action in that pitch. It can't be any worse than the Star Wars prequels.

Help! / No more art comp?
05 August, 2008, 12:17:04 PM
Does anyone know why the art competition thread isn't accepting new posts?
I had an enrty but it won't allow me to add it.
I'm not too worried as my entry was pretty crap anyway but it was a bit of a disappointment.

I wonder if anyone can help me. I was trying to find out some info on some characters and strips from the old funny comics I used to read as a child. I can't seem to find any references to some of my favourite characters. The best site I've managed to find is International Hero but it's a bit patchy.
Some of the strips I am interested in are  'Our Sherriff's an Ape', 'Deadly Headly: Vampire Detective' and 'Mike's Bike'.
Thanks.

Off Topic / Internet Dating
26 June, 2008, 08:19:17 PM
As some of you may remember from an earlier thread I had a go at speed dating earlier this year.
Although it was a good laugh it didn't lead to any lasting friendships (not even with bumsex girl).

Anyway I was thinking of giving internet dating a go. I think it would be good to meet a few more new people, I'm not looking for a soul mate or anything.
Why am I posting this on here? I wondered if any boarders had given it a shot in the past.
So anyone have any success stories (or advice) or is it an idea I should give up on as I will undoubtably meet no one but mentals and psycho bunny boilers!
Oh yeah, the site I was thinking of trying out is free so I won't be getting ripped off!

General / Childhood Pop Crush!
21 May, 2008, 01:59:34 PM
I was watching some old music vids on you-tube earlier and came across this (so to speak!)

All the old feelings came flooding back!
I wish she wanted *my* love - sigh.

Who was your childhood pop crush?

Film & TV / Wall-E

Anyone seen the trailer for this new Pixar film yet?

It's about a robot abandoned on Earth who looks like a mini-Mek-Quake!

Looks like it might be good. Pixar are normally pretty reliable.

General / Cashback on comics!
16 February, 2008, 09:35:14 PM
I've just signed up to a thing called Quidco which is a cashback cooperative. If you buy stuff from websites via their links you get cash back.

Forbidden Planet is on there as is HMV and Play as well as loads of more general stuff.

Pretty sure it's kosher, that dude on Radio 2 was talking about it.

Oh yeah, it's Quidco.co.uk

Off Topic / Speed Dating
13 February, 2008, 06:24:35 PM
Any of the board singletons tried this? I went last night and was pleasantly surprised.
It was a really good laugh and there was a good selection of girls. Everyone was really friendly and I've got a couple of dates lined up already!
One girl asked me when was the last time I had sex and then told me she liked it up the bum and she was good at blowjobs (not in that order I presume). Classy! She got a tick in the box.
I was surprised at the number of teachers and nurses.
Anyway if you're fed up with the single life and deprssed by the onset of valentine's hype you should give it a go.

Off Topic / New Year Happy Slap!
01 January, 2008, 05:00:43 PM
I went out to celebrate the new year and got happy slapped on the way home!
I wasn't hurt. I was hit once from behind and then the youth came round in front of me to have another go - I think he was expecting me to take it but I went fucking mental and he bottled it and ran off.
Luckily a policeman was coming down the road and he took the guys name and address. All the time I was being taunted by this guy's mates and the policeman just let them get on with it. The policeman said he could arrest the guy because he hadn't left a mark!
It seems this type of behaviour is just accepted at this time of year. The copper seemed to have an 'if you go out new years eve what do you expect?' attitude.
It's at times like this I wish the police would break out the daysticks and bust some heads. It's not as though the guy has been punished so he'll probably do it again and the next person might not fight back.
It's been a shit start to 2008 but happy new year everybody!

Help! / What's wrong with Amazon?
11 November, 2007, 09:08:16 AM
Whenever I go on to Amazon lately it won't show any of the pictures or catagory buttons, everything is just a box with a little red cross in it.
Is happening to everyone or do I need to download an update for my computer or something?

Film & TV / The Peter Serafinowicz Show.
09 October, 2007, 07:42:38 PM
Did anyone catch this last Thursday? What did you think?
I really enjoyed it. It was pretty odd because I'm sure some of the sketches shouldn't have been funny yet they were.
The Kitchen Gun sketch had me pissing myself despite the fact that I thought the Barry Scott thing had been milked to death about 2 years ago.
The Michael Caine masterclass stuff was pure genius but it was an odd thing to parody beacuse I think the real thing was on about fifteen years ago!
Oh, yeah and you've gotta love Pirate Chat!

General / Charity fundraising idea. Calling all artists!
15 September, 2007, 12:44:44 PM
Didn't really know where to post this but I had a pretty good idea for raising some money for charity.
I know some people were fundraising for one of the cancer charities after Tom Frame passed away so if anyone's interested here it is.

I have just seen an advertisement for a range of classic novels from Penguin books with blank covers - the idea being that you draw your own.
I thought it might be pretty awesome if some of our talented pro/am artists had a go and maybe auctioned them off for charity. Who wouldn't want to own a copy of Dracula with a Dom Reardon cover or Animal Farm by Boo Cook?

Anyway, as I say, just a thought. If you think it's a good idea maybe someone with better organisational skills might like to run with it.
You can see what books are available at penguin.co.uk/mypenguin.

Books & Comics / Jeff Hawke and Garth
30 May, 2007, 10:59:41 PM
I recently bought the old Titan Jeff Hawke and Garth volumes off ebay.
Has anyone here read them? I'm sure some of you have.

Anyway I thought I'd post some of my thoughts on them in case anyone is interested.

I really enjoyed Jeff Hawke. The stories are very quirky and the artwork is just great.
Much of the characterisation and dialogue reminds me alot of Alan Moore.
While reading it I kept thinking it would make a great TV series. There isn't a great deal of intense action but I think it would fit in really well in the Doctor Who slot on a saturday night. Probably doable on a similar budget too.
I would really recommend picking these books up if you've never read them. The Bolland covers are great too!

As for Garth - well the series is fun but it's pretty dated.
Garth is basically an adventuring meathead who travels through time by possessing the bodies of different incarnations of himself or otherwise has contemporary adventures in his own time through various plot devices.
The thing that really dates the series is Garth's alpha male attitude and the way the girls all swoon over him. Most of the girls can't wait to get their kit off and any historical adventure seems to be set in a period where women are constantly topless.
The stories are pretty formulaic. There is normally a good love interest who needs protection and a bad girl who just wants to get into Garth's pants. The baddy is normally spurned by Garth and say's something like 'Insolant oaf! No man has ever spurned me so!'.
I thought this series had an interesting premise though. I wouldn't mind seeing what someone like Warren Ellis or Grant Morrison would do with this character who travels through time in the bodies of his ancestors. Don't suppose it will ever happen but it's something I'd like to see.
Definitely worth a look if you see either of the books going cheap.

Books & Comics / Capt Britain and Death's Head
18 May, 2007, 06:00:09 PM
I saw an advert today showing a couple of new TPBs of the original Captain Britain and the original Death's Head apparently available in all good bookshops now.
I've never read those old Captain Britain comics but I remember Death's Head as being quite good. I'm not sure if these are the complete series (I seem to remember a cross over between DH and Doctor Who. Not sure of this is included).
I had a look round the shops today but couldn't find a copy of either. Does anyone with a clearer memory think they would be worth a purchase?

Help! / Titan Books
12 May, 2007, 06:17:38 PM
Does anyone know where I can get a list of all the Titan graphic albums that were published? Not just the 2000AD ones but all the Modesty Blaise and Garth books etc.
Cheers.
