General / David Cronenberg to film John Wagner comic!
17 February, 2004, 04:52:22 PM
From icv2:

Cronenberg to Film Graphic Novel 'A History of Violence'
February 16, 2004

Variety is reporting that director David Cronenberg (Scanners, Videodrome, Dead Zone, The Fly, Dead Ringers) will direct an adaptation of A History of Violence for New Line Cinema.  Judge Dredd creator John Wagner wrote the A History of Violence graphic novel, which was the first volume published by DC in its Paradox Graphic Mystery line edited by Andrew Helfer.  The second Paradox Graphic Mystery was Max Allan Collins' Road to Perdition.  The film version of the Road to Perdition earned over $100 million at the box office and the Road to Perdition graphic novel sold far more copies in the wake of the film's release than it did during its largely unnoticed first publication.

A History of Violence feature film could produce the same effect, and with a script in hand and a director on board, this project looks like it will be able to escape "development" hell and find its way to the silver screen.   Screenwriter Josh Olson (Three Gun Blues) has been working on the project since last March (see "A History of Violence Gets a Writer").  The hiring of a director indicates that the screenplay is "a go" and the fact that Cronenberg has signed on is a definite plus.  He will bring a piercing intelligence and focused intensity to the project that should help it immensely.  John Wagner is one of the most underrated writers in comics and he deserves some success and acknowledgement on the silver screen.  After the Judge Dredd film fiasco Hollywood definitely owes him one.

"Part of its major intended "effect" must presumably be to terrify other potential enemies into submission by convincing them the world's last Superpower/first Ultrapower has fallen into the hands of a shrieking, masturbating lower primate and is now constantly a hair's-breadth away from going absolutely foaming fucking mad and killing everybody..."

Well, I've finally bitten the bullet and created my own Delphi forum. I figured I already waste way too much time on forums like this, may as well waste time on my own...

I only created the Go!

08 April, 2003, 11:04:11 PM
The ballot form for the National Comics Awards 2003 is now online at: http://www.sitsvac.org/awards2002.html

If you don't want to see the Galaxy's Greatest Comic unjustly trounced by The beano like last year, get voting! But keep it fair, please - one person, one vote.

Personally I'm voting for John Wagner for the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT Award. Who's with me?

Off Topic / A History Of Violence
19 September, 2002, 03:22:27 PM
From Comics2Film:

Variety reports that New Line Cinema has acquired the feature film rights to John Wagner and Vince Locke's graphic novel A History of Violence.

The book was the published by DC Comics under their Paradox Press imprint, which also yielded the critically acclaimed Road To Perdition. The article describes the book as "a modern-day Unforgiven [which] follows an ordinary family's life after the father receives unwanted national attention for a seemingly vigilante self-defense killing at his diner, and his previously unknown past is dredged up."
