Ha! Fav episode yet. Always love those Hershey Dredd chatrs while they look over the city and that one does it so very well, using the three panels to perfection.

Have to say this have been a positive lesson on how it keep a story exciting and moving in a very restricted space.

Lovin' it.

That's a classic 'Dredd pointing gun at reader' panel there - very unique take, reminds me of Talbot for some reason (although obviously not the inking).

DONT LAUGH AT MY PAIN!

But thank you for your kind words.  Lee has to take most of the credit for making it an actual story rather than just ten pages of Dredd shooting lizards in suits.

Well done chaps.

Not Quite a daily Zarjaz , but something we want to share all the same.

JUDGE DREDD- Video Nasties is a strip in the current issue of Zarjaz (Available from the FQP Webshop (http://www.futurequake.co.uk/shop.php), but you all know that) by writer  Lee Robson (https://twitter.com/lee_robson) and and drawn by John Hutcheson.

We have another version of that same strip, drawn as a try-out for Zarjaz by Alexander Mines. (http://amines1974.deviantart.com/)

Rather than let this set of pages gather digital dust, we are going to share them with you, a page a day, for this week.

So, enjoy:

Nah - there's plenty of vehicles in the first panel, and you wouldn't buy contraband goods in a heavily populated area...
Title: Re: The Daily ZARJAZ!
Post by: amines2058 on 14 August, 2015, 06:37:12 AM
The problem was there was zero people anywhere. If you look through every page, outside of the main protagonists there was not a single other character evident. (Except for the vehicles in the first panel of this page)
I suppose I could blame Day of Chaos???  ;)

So why is that you guys can produce a compelling, authentic and crisply told Dredd story in three panel chunks in your spare time, and yet the professionals at IDW and DC before them can't seem to string two pages together?

This specific story isn't the most original concept, it doesn't have much scope for huge visual spectacle, but it works. I believe the characters (including Dredd), I understand the setting, I want to know what happens next (quite badly!). Ye make it look easy, and obviously it really isn't

Really great wrap-up.  I always enjoy the Daily Zarjaz, and there have certainly been others I've enjoyed as much or even more, but this one didn't rely on any in-jokes (e.g. the excellent movie-uniformed jimp story) or fan-service gimmicks, it was just a straightforward Dredd story told with style and economy, and it could have graced any Prog. Well done, and thanks!

Definitely one of the reasons I appreciated this tale - I'm not so into the 'nods and winks to the fans' type of story (if there were any, I didn't notice 'em) and enjoyed this as a solid little Dredd yarn.

As always, this reminds me just how much I enjoy Dredd as a daily - it can't be easy breaking a strip into three panel chunks that both satisfy and tantalise, but somehow you guys manage it. With this one it strikes me how important visual design is: with everyone so distinctive, there's no need to slow things down by restating everything. It's the first thing I look at every morning, even before the rest of the advent calendar, or my kids' grimy faces.

Excellent work all 'round, chaps! Thank you all for the time, toil and talent you've put into these fantastic strips. To me, threads like this and the Advent Calendar are the modern-day equivalent of the old Fleetway annuals - only better. Truly Zarjaz!

Bolt, I love the way you "Nazify" Dredd's helmet - little touches like that make me very happy :)

Thanks again and my best wishes to all of you and all of yours for the coming New Year.

Just found this strip.
Not bad at all. Will there be more by these 2 guys? Is it just on the website or in a comic somewhere?

Main reason for posting though is listing the crowd scene guest stars...all speculation on my part though.

Part 1. Torquamada, Tiger commander from Meltdown Man, Preacher Cain (back of his head), a Kleg, Howard the Duck

Interesting example of a style bedding-in!  I wasn't sure about the first page, a bit too mid-90s for me I thought, but when it plays out across a half-dozen pages it creates its own world and works really well. Many thanks for this Gail and Bolt!

Shucks, thanks for the nice comments you 2K Boarders. xx

Yup, a bit of watercolour, a dash of copic markers a sprinkling of fine-liners and a bit of colour pencil here and there. All mixed up with scratchy-scratchy pen work.

Only 24 more parts to go!!! Whoop-whoop!!

Whuhhh? A week's worth in one day? Wonderfully profligate madness! This is turning out to be a great take, pitched somewhere between the chatty Hogan and messianic Abnett versions of Red. Some great layouts for the big fight scenes, touch of the McMahons about those panels in Parts 22 & 23.

(Editor asleep in Part 19: "populous" = "populace").

Hmm, bit of a disconnect between parts 26 and 27 - the Uncle is pointing the gun downward at Durham (who's on her knees), and Carolina's stood far behind them both. Then he's suddenly (somehow) firing upwards through Carolina and into Durham! It doesn't quite read properly.

Loving this properly epic tale, though.  The last panel of part 25 is a corker!

Posted on behalf of Gail:

Hey, hey 2k Boarders.

The lovely Bolt-01 (Dave Evans- mighty editor of FutureQuake productions) has kindly posted this on my behalf. (Can't seem to post or respond on the board anymore?)

I'm Gail and recently I branched out from just writing fiction for my own amusement (or the occasional bit of course work) and tried a few comic scripts.

My friend had sent a few pieces to FQP and passed me their details. I borrowed some of his 2000 AD books and soaked myself in thrill-power. I must admit my reading only covered from late 70's to mid 80's but there was a lot of fertile material in there.

So I came up with, what I thought, was a good idea and committed it to paper. Not knowing much about the how's and wherefores, I then just decided I'd draw it too. It was a short Judge Dredd story featuring Judge Beeny. The theme of the story was Justice Department controlling the population through administering drugs to the water supply.

Anyway, scanned it in and mailed it off to the lovely droids at FQP. Bolt (their leader) was very complimentary but pointed out various problems with the basic idea, its execution and some problems with story structure. And that it had already been "done" in 2000 AD several decades ago. (How would I know that!!?) But I didn't spit venom for long...lol.

My next stab at this comic biz was a short daily strip about Rogue Trooper. This was a bit more successful but I still had some problems with anatomy. (Must practice hands and faces!)

It was nice to get some positive feedback and comparisons with McMahon got mentioned (I wish I was that good). But I have to admit I was aiming for Alfredo Alcala, who was a South American artist who worked mostly for Marvel on black and white and horror anthology strips.

Any road up, Bolt came back to me with a script for Durham Red. I hadn't seen a proper script before and it was very different to how I'd put together my first 2 attempts. I made sure I would follow the way this was put together for any further strips I might come up with.

I can't remember (it's the Gin and late nights) if the Durham Red script arrived first or if I had already started toying with the idea of a Durham Red "daily". But however it happened I needed to do some research. I was aware of Red in early SD by the wonderful Ezquerra. That also led me on to Abnett and Harrison's version. A plot started to form.

Bolt pointed out from my initial scribblings that I needed to establish a continuity for this. Where was it set within Red's time-line? I had a lot of scope there as the character is thousands of years old. I also thought about how that might affect her relationships with mere mortals. And a lot of my own interest in all things vampire got chucked into the melting pot.

SPOILER FREE DISCUSSION OF THE CURRENT STRIP
So Blood Pact was born. Here I had this former bounty hunter, former Goddess, who had outlived everyone she knew. By a comfortable margin. And I was going to throw her in prison.

Visions of bodice ripping Sapphic fantasy crossed my addled mind and some of these themes stayed. For someone as eternal as Red would she worry or concern herself about gender? I thought it wouldn't even be a consideration for her. What separates friend from food? Again, how would that play out for her? Unaware of any other versions or interpretations I pressed on and as my prison set story developed I realised I had to give Red a physical and psychological overhaul.

Taking visual cues from Ezquerra and Harrison I stripped back her outfit. I decided the prison would be hot and humid. Red would wear functional, minimal clothing. Straps and pouches to carry items and she would need a haircut. Long hair is a right bastard in hot, humid climates. Now, with a few months distance on the finished strip I do think Red looks a bit like an S&M dominatrix. But maybe she always was...lol.

The script just got away from me at this point. Suddenly it was 18 parts. Then 22 parts. Then 31 parts. I sent the script off to Bolt and his proto-droids. There were many problems with the initial script, particularly the last five or six parts. I wanted some sort of bitter sweet love-betrayal ending. But it didn't work.
The droids pointed this out and then Proto-Rich suggested a twist to the ending that I had not even considered. And it ticked all the boxes. All praise due to Proto-Rich.

I quite liked the black and white artwork and I was trying to improve the anatomy (sometimes without much success) and had already discovered FQP could publish this in colour. So with some trepidation I got my hands on anything that would produce a colour. Some of the colouring seems garish and some more subtle. I was also surprised at how different it looks online to how it looks on my screen at home and the originals in hand. So, again, a bit of a learning curve there.

Addressing the poor flow of storytelling between parts 26 and 27. Special prize to Dark Jimbo. Looking back at it I can see it doesn't work. Just needed an extra panel to get them where they need to be...lol. Damn the limiting space of these daily strips. (Says the girl who took over Daily Zarjaz for a whole month.)

Hopefully it won't offend or go against the spirit of the character and I can only offer over-enthusiasm as my defence for any transgressions. So it's been fun and interesting and a bit challenging from my first Judge Beeny strip to this one. I'm looking ahead to a summer of making cocktails and washing glasses whilst cooking up whatever warped fantasy I can. If there is anything rattling around in my head other than Jennifer Lawrence in a bikini I might get it down on paper in the future.

My rambling introduction. My explanation of what I did while Mega City went to crap...lol. Oh, no...that was PJ.

If I have the pleasure of ever meeting any of you I know how impressed you'll be with how white my teeth are!! (See Dogbreath #34- out July)

It's an impressive feat drawing a strip with the limitations of a daily over that length. I did one once that was about 10 parts and that was enough to have me drained at the end! The art has a lovely nostalgic feel to it and any minor missteps in storytelling, as mentioned above, will be nothing compared to what's to be learnt from from the process.

There are some really nice page layouts in those Beeny/Rogue pages, too.

I missed the very end of the Durham Red strip 'cos I was on my holliers at the time (now a rapidly fading memory, or was it just a wonderful dream...?), but it was great!  Brava, Gail, that's some stamina!

Incidentally, I think there is mileage in having someone like Beeny addressing the routine drugging of citizens that was revealed in 'The Man Who Knew Too Much' all those years ago, especially from the perspective of a supposed reformer on the Council of Five.

Tords - when RM147 initially pitched it I admit to felling a bit 'meh' about it. However I trust the RM147's abilities so it was given a free reign. I'm glad we did that as this was a deliciously trouble free experience. If it computes more tales for Abelard etc then I'd be happy to read them.

Thanks for the kind words.
Snazz is perfect material for short, punchy, humourous tales.

I do worry about upsetting Alan but I hope he will see that all the team at FQP love the characters and comics.
We all know the various backstage stuff from over the years but all the Zarjaz and Dogbreath work are labours of love for all involved and no disrespect is meant to any of the original creators.
(I did rush this one a bit...so, sorry it's a bit slap-dash in places)

Heh, didn't mean to invoke the Wrath of the Hairy One in any serious way! I've never heard of Alan complaining about fan stuff, he was a fanzine man himself, and he's got way bigger fish to fry. It's not like he's Uncle Pat or anything!

And I see neither slap nor dash, just top notch cartooning. Keep the double-decker diversions coming, please!

I love that I can practically hear the *boks* that lie ahead! Fun idea, and a good one for Dredd RPG GMs to file away. Ciaran's art is striking, love the way the hatching builds up shapes, and the shifting perspectives. One to watch there.

Is there no chance Lee Robson could get a crack at a prog (or Meg, or Regened
or Special)  Dredd? This, and so many of his Zarjaz serials, would make for a fine one-off. I know Mean is reformed/retired, but this cosplay-cult-gang is perfect way to use him in current'continuity', or as-is in a flashback story.

Lee is great - he's one of a handful of writers I've worked with over the years that I would almost accept a script from before I read it. He really knows his craft.

PIMP: If anyone here hasn't seen these before, then the Velicity Jones Strips by Lee and Bryan Coyle that appeared in ACES Weekly are now being made available at  (http://www.malletproductions.co.uk/Mallet%20Productions), along with other cracking titles. /PIMP.
