I am a trusting person by nature. It just seems strange that some guy would make up a story and tell it in front of 10 people. I suppose some people are like that though, serial bullshitters.

The power of urban legends is that nobody makes up anything and the 'lie' if any is such a tiny harmless one that it doesn't matter. Its all about the degree of separation - the story is NEVER about someone you can actually check it with.

Say a trusted friend tells you a story about his sister. You tell a workmate "my friend's sister...". It's such a good story, he goes home to his girlfriend, but instead of saying "the sister of a friend of a guy at work...", which is a bit clumsy, he may say "the sister of a girl at work...". She tells her mum ... etc.

Thus the story gains power with each telling. You always implicitly trust the last link in the chain the rest of the relationships seem trustworthy too - you have no way of telling how many "tidied-up-for-the-sake-of-the-telling" links have been edited out before. Also there's natural tendency to embellish or re-emphasise with each telling so the story gets better and more spreadable, like a virus.

So your mate's not a liar or a bullshitter just a bit gullible or doesn't care much about the provenance of an entertaining if tall tale. That's much nicer isn't it?
