Title: Inside No. 9 (BBC2)
Post by: Goaty on 12 February, 2014, 09:54:27 PM
If you like The League of GentlemenPsychoville's dark humour.

Inside No.9 is new series by Steve Pemberton & Reece Shearsmith.

The opening episode last week was so brilliant and dark!

2nd Episode on tonight at BBC2 at 10pm.

So enjoyed 2nd episode of Inside No 9 tonight, then I notice comedy actor playing "Deaf and Dumb" Salesman on it, he couldn't signing, thought I knew many Deaf actors can do that then
didn't expected that ending!
I hadn't read much about it before I watched it last week, but was getting a very strong 'Tales of The Unexpected' vibe from it.

Then the bloke from the Royal Jelly (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0717471/) episode showed up.

Finally got around to this yesterday - WOW utterly brilliant, I'm preferring this in a way to Psychoville. I'm a real sucker for the anthology format - especially as they seem to be being quite adventurous with it. This episode was one of the finest bits of TV I've seen in aaaaggess.

I just caught up with this yesterday as well - brilliant stuff. They're really embracing the opportunities offered by the format - I wonder if the other episodes will see them carry on the theme of creativity spurred by limitation. Probably the most controlled bits of telly I've seen from the pair - whereas 'League...' and 'Psychoville' were big, mad, sprawling works of craziness, this has been very stripped-down, focused and clever.

Episode 3 was excellent. But I did manage to guess the ending about 2 mins before the end.

Great show!

Third was good - not as good as 1 or 2 as trying to second-guess the twist got in the way of enjoying the show a bit but again a neat set of characters. Really am lapping this up.

Also Reece Shearsmith in the last House of Fools was great as well. 2014 sees the Reece resurgence.

Very effective and creepy as hell although
painfully lacking an ending - it just sort of ... stopped.
I must say though it's been a remarkably good series - check out the interesting "extra" episode The Inventors (http://www.insideno9extra.co.uk/) as well!

Can't wait til series 2  (http://www.chortle.co.uk/news/2014/01/29/19489/bbc_orders_second_series_of_inside_no_9):D

I'm not quite sure why they made an extra episode that way... I was waiting for some sort of interactivity other than just skipping to the next bit.

I'm sorry to disagree with everyone but I was quite disappointed with this series.  The stories were fine but, with the exception of the silent episode, this was at the expense of the comedy.  I'm not saying there wasn't any humour but it did feel like the jokes were few and far between.

The sooner the League of Gentlemen reform, the better from my point of view!

I watched the first three episodes of this on BBC iplayer today. (I wouldn't have known it had been on without this thread, that's how little TV I've been watching lately. So thanks guys!)

Brilliant stuff! The first two were laugh out loud funny (particularly the second). The last not so much, but it was just as good in a very different way. All had great dark twists. Great stuff. Think I'll watch the fourth while I have my cuppa...

It's only the first two that are laugh out loud funny. The others are more like Tales of the Unexpected
Title: Re: Inside No. 9 (BBC2)
Post by: Keef Monkey on 17 March, 2014, 02:24:53 PM
It did seem to move away from the more overt comedy as it went on, but setting it up that way meant they can throw some good gags into the darker episodes without them seeming out of place I reckon.

Thought the last episode was brilliantly creepy, those guys do have a knack for nailing disturbing moments when they do decide to go for all-out horror. Thought the set-up was very reminiscent of House Of The Devil, but really different in the execution.

Been a fantastic series, after the great first episode I didn't think they'd be able to keep the quality up but they did so admirably (the Macbeth episode was the weakest for me but even that was plenty entertaining).
Title: Re: Inside No. 9 (BBC2)
Post by: Mardroid on 20 March, 2014, 04:15:17 AM
For some reason I was expecting
another twist at the end of the last episode.

On thinking about it, I realised there had already been a double twist... I it's just the fact there wasn't something at the very end that threw me a bit. Just... situation explained and she met her fate.

Not a big criticism though. If anything the criticism should be on myself for allowing my mind to be caught up in a specific format.

It was an excellent episode all in all. And that scene at the end. "Mr. Mischief! Mr. Mischief!" Brrr!
Favourite episode: 2 (Or was it 3? The silent one anyway.)
Least favourite: 4.
The rest were pretty good though. In there own way as good as 2(or 3) in some ways, but I just loved the humour of 2(or 3).

That being said I loved the twist of Tom And Geri. Perhaps I'd rate it with the favourite above. They're so different yet good they warrant a tie I think.

So did I, was a very pleasant surprise that it was coming back. Not just us either - as of writing iMdB is still classing it as a "mini-series" although - I suppose the big clue was the 'series 1' on the DVD but I just thought that was MAD OPTIMISM

From what I understand, it was a close thing whether it's a one off or not. I'd be amazed if it gets a third go given the current climate at the Beeb. Money money money. (Or in other words, Tories Tories Tories, it's a Murdoch world).

Where was the no.9 in this episode though?

On the hall of the building where they held the witch trial.

Actually I'm not sure they would have bothered numbering huts in those days but to keep with the convention of the programme I guess they had to keep it in somewhere.

I loved how they riffed on the idea of having a group photo, and the pay-off was very amusing.

I watched episodes 2 and 3 last night. Both very good in very different ways.

Concerning the ending of the Witch Trial episode....
I guessed on the second twist (although I didn't know it would be the second) as that's typical from this kind of plot, but that first twist with the bag removal reveal completely surprised me. And that somehow made the second predictable twist satisfying. If that makes sense.
Very funny stuff in that episode.

Found this the most like Royston Vasey, very funny and yet still dark and twisted. Annoyed with myself that I gave up on the first series after a too dark first episode now.

Title: Re: Inside No. 9 (BBC2)

Thing is, although there is a tendency to certain themes (dark humour and yes some nastiness) the stories are so different (apart from being set in one location- No. 9) and the tone shifts too, you're certaint to find something you like, I think.

This episode was very different from the
sad/sweet/poignant
Episode 2 for example.

Title: Re: Inside No. 9 (BBC2)
Post by: CrazyFoxMachine on 13 April, 2015, 12:18:48 AM
...the twists are always slightly less good than the episodes themselves I'm finding.

The last one (which was essentially just an extended version of the trial scene in The Witchsmeller Pursuivant from the first series of Blackadder) had a tremendously good cast and a great dark undertone - not to mention DAVID WARNER who is the god of all space. However the final twist was just the first thing you thought of really.

I still think they're yet to match the giddying heights of the utterly extraordinary silent episode in Series 1 but  the twist problem is just shallow nitpickery frankly as each episode is a real treat, rammed with interesting characters and excellent guest stars.

Last episode another cracker with the me being cynical about the "obvious" ending (
I thought, Velvet Underground style, it would end abruptly with the knife being stuck straight in the cake
) which actually was neatly sidestepped in favour of something quite magically awkward.

Eerily the next day I met a load of family and found some of the worse characters in this to be quite well observed  ::)

Audio commentaries on Sound Cloud, they make a thing of lining it up to the episode, but it's not hugely important if you can remember the episode, and they wander off on a tangent.

More important that they're listened to in the order they were recorded, as they refer back to previous episodes.

By the end of the show it ended up being one of those great and unique series that no one tuned in to watch; the ratings really dropped off by the end and I am sure there's an video interview somewhere with either Shearsmith or Pemberton talking about it. RIP Psychoville. I thought it was as good as League personally.

Just saw the first of Series 3 - up to their usual high standards but I did feel the final twist was one too far (and didn't entirely land) but the cast was wonderful and
the hand-stab game was absurdly tense - only Pembleton/Shearsmith could go from arguing over the bill to The Deer Hunter in twenty minutes
Yeah. Outside Dr.Who and soap operas, 6-8 episodes (most likely 6 or 7) is pretty standard for UK series. Despite this, I often find myself surprised and hankering for more. I think we're spoilt by US series.

Genius!

If The Riddle Of The Sphinx doesn't win awards, there is something badly wrong. Going to watch it again when i get home.

Yeah a particularly focused episode where the twists are woven really tightly into it. Properly properly horrible as well - I love how you can go into Inside No. 9 going "this will get dark" and even then it'll surprise you with how far it can go.

I'm so glad this has caught on - I remember there being a bit of a "they'll never do that again" vibe after the first series came out for at least half a year and now they're recording the fourth series even as the third airs. Lucky to have seen Pemberton & Shearsmith discussing and showing the legendary silent episode live in Bristol once as well.

Those BBC buggers confused me on catch up - When i saw this was ep3 I thought I'd missed one, but they were counting the Xmas one, as part of the series.

I'm absiolutley loving this, the best thing on telly for years. They all have the odd logical flaw if you think about  them too much:
The Bill:
why would he join the consptracy rather than calling the police? He's alrteady loaded, and they've got no leverage on him
The sphinx:
as she is a crossword expert, why is she so eadilly led clue by clue? She has the grid and the list of cluues, but doesn't twig asphyxiation, myistery guest or pufferfish
Minor nitpicking though - I bloody love this series

Really enjoyed The Bill and Riddle of the Sphynx but as others have pointed out the logic doesn't quite stand up to scrutiny.

In The Bill it makes little sense for Glenister's character to join the conmen unless by some stretch you take it that he had to do it or they would have killed him and so once involved he couldn't then easily implicate them. Bit tortuous but , given he was the wealthy mark, I couldn't see why he would join them.

The point re the crossword giving away the plot is also valid and I cannot see an easy way to explain it away.

I guess with a short running time and so many twists and turns involved there are bound to be the odd illogicality but they don't really detract from the overall experience.

Inside No.9 was stunning, best of the three so far for me :D
For me Reece & Pemberton are at their best with squabbling humans - from their days as Charlie and Stella in the League right up til now they manage it so effortlessly and the cast here was wonderful. I personally prefer it in No.9 when when they're not going hell-for-leather-horrortwists and just focus on characters but the joy of the series overall is the variety. Utterly fantastic episode and caught me in a really troubled mood so the ending was a joypunch for me.
Special bonus:
The bonafide deaf actor Emily Howlett sent numerous adorable tweets about the show and its crew and actors throughout: https://twitter.com/EHowlett/status/839259039196381184 (https://twitter.com/EHowlett/status/839259039196381184)
You are absolutely correct.
However, I would suggest that she is presented with the clues in such a short space of time that it would have been nigh on impossible for her, or any expert, to solve a complicated crossword in such a short space of time (around 15 mins?) But I take your point. Had she been given an hour or two then I agree.
Watched this episode again today and my thoughts are;
How do we know that he is loaded? Everyone around the table is basically lying and so could he be. He has his card declined and says 'I've got £250 in that account'. Not exactly a fortune. I think the other four have fallen for his lies and then realise the truth but he knows the scam now and joins them instead after he has paid out loads of money for his divorce.
I could be wrong but it works this way.

Another cracker this week and all the better for dispensing with the twisted horror to tell a grounded tale of office politics. Those songs padded things out nicely, these have been dense half-hours.
It was a bit obvious the southern character in the first episode wouldn't be quite as loaded as it appeared, and as it played out things felt natural enough. No problems with it at all. Oh, and quite brilliant
.

Just watched Empty orchestra again.
This series just keeps on getting better and better.
It's by far the best thing on television and the writing is so crisp, clean and truthful that every episode almost makes me want to weep with it's total beauty.

It's so good that it makes me want to punch Shearsmith and Pemberton. Punch them with love. In the face. Hard.

A much darker episode this week, with a
grim ending. Even grimmer if you consider what the main character's comment implies at the end "They should be together".
It was very different from last week's episode. Actually it was rather different from all the others in this series, apart from the underlying dark comedy, which is part of what makes this series so good.
It starts with what seems to be an amusing obsession, that gets rather embarassing. Then it goes to a very sad place before becoming rather grim. Not the nasty grim of The Riddle of the Sphinx, it's all implied, but dark for all that.
A very interesting journey.

I read a review afterwards, and I'm ashamed to say
I missed all the pairings in the house. Then again, I wasn't really looking for them.
the announcer said something like "watch this one very closely" but I still didn't notice that - It was a very sad ending and it was left ambiguous as to
whether he'd killed the daughter - we're certainly supposed to think so with the blood and the "they should be together" line, but it then turns out to be the old uni mate - but is it just him?
Getting so much backstory, character and narrative - not to mention laughs, horror and  a twist ending - into a 30 minute one off is incredibly hard, and these guys manage it with consistency. Terrific stuff

We sat down, as a family, including my nearly 13 year old Son and watched The Riddle of the Sphinx, Empty Orchestra and the latest episode and he loved them all.

Yes that's what I thought. It's only a throwaway line but they don't waste a word in these scripts.

Only seen the two so far; Bill and Riddle. Both excellent. Can't believe I've missed out on this so far (probably because I'm the only person in the solar system who doesn't find League of Gentlemen funny so didn't think I'd like it)

Really enjoyed last night's episode - although I completely mis-guessed the outcome - twice:
the killer often turns out to be one of the early 'victims' who isn't really dead, so I was convinced it was the waitress as she was the only one we didn't see die and nobody touched the body. Once we did see who it was, I thought she would turn out to be the artist in drag who'd faked his own death. So ... 0 for 2 there  ::)
"Diddle Diddle Dumpling"

Mesmerizing. Loved the characters
slow descent into shoe madness
and the achingly unanswered
final question and subsequent revelation he'd planted the shoe himself.
Really sparse, really chilling. Them at their tense best.

"Private View"

Nicht so gut. A
broader slasher featuring an unlikable cavalcade linearly picked off and finishing with a fairly undercooked twist. So ... OK heart-boy just takes credit for the artwork and the murders are never discovered. Sure.
Solid casting all round though - I adore Morgana Robinson.

Overall - another strong series from Inside No.9, a pleasing variety of styles - some excellent guest performances and if anything it seems to be gaining momentum with time rather than losing it. Still suffers from what the very first series does though which is the sometimes need to twist even if the logic doesn't quite follow. Often the ride is far better than the eventual destination, but it's always worth watching. Highlights for me are the unexpectedly joyous Empty Orchestra and the brilliantly clever Devil of Christmas.

I am a massive fan of League of Gentlemen and their follow up Psychoville. Both are my kind of dark humour.

I thoroughly enjoyed 1st series of Inside Number 9 but thought the second series was all a bit average,  however series 3 has been back to form. I think it's been possibly the best season. "Empty Orchestra" "The Bill" and "The Devil of Christmas" are easily in my top five episodes of the show; the others being "Sardines" and "A Quiet Night In" from the first series.

According to Shearsmith's tweets they're half way through filming Series 4 - so glad that the BBC hasn't axed it like they usually do with my favorite beeb shows.

I can understand you disliking League... While I largely liked it (I'm not keen on all the first series, but I think it improved) I can see how it would be very very much a matter of taste. (Okay, I guess most things are, but League... is goes to a very silly and extreme place which can be particularly polarising.

Inside No. 9, while also being a black comedy, in many ways, is not as extreme. Some of the episodes are even quite gentle, although many do go to a very dark place.

In short, I shouldn't let The League of Gentlemen put you off. Or Psychoville* for that matter. Even if you don't like all the episodes, as an anthology series, you'll likely find something to like, much like our beloved comic.

*Although I really lied that too, but it's different enough.

Watched 'The 12 days of Christine' last night and found it very moving. I was a bit of a downer yesterday, for some reason Ray was at the forefront of my thoughts all day. Watched the show and with 'Con te partiro' playing throughout the episode, a song Ray chose for and I had played at her funeral service and for the first time since a few weeks after her passing I cried myself to sleep.

Just now working our way through Season 2.  Such a treat to not know how each episode will play out: comedy, horror, drama, mystery... The twists (or perhaps more properly 'resolutions') themselves are often predictable, but this is offset by being totally ignorant of what kind of tale you're watching until you're 5 or 10 minutes in, and then by the sheer pleasure of watching the story play out.  Even little things like waiting right to the end
(in vain) for Pemberton to appear
in Season 1's The Harrowing and reverse the horror conceit with some comedy twist was exquisite...

Watched 12 Days of Christine on Saturday, and it had us both dabbing at the eyes and generally going to bed upset, and that's without anything like Flippo's excuse.  Despite being a fairly obvious setup it's very powerful and completely gripping stuff, and Sheridan Smith is even better than she was in the Harry Hill Movie (I kid, she's a bit of a revelation after vanilla TV roles for years).

Does anyone else make these sorts of things at this level of invention and wit?

That was a pretty dense 30 minutes! There were a few loose ends, I felt (
An adopted heir to the throne? Recognising twins you haven't seen since they were born?), but otherwise a complete Shakespearean comedy in one act
. Where else would you get it!

Oh definitely PJ, that was the idea for sure, and it worked.  It's telly like no other, and I still love the fact that you have absolutely no idea what you're in for, almost until it's over.

I had to watch that episode again.
As good as it was it did not sit well with me originally.
I had a few glasses of vino and I think the emotional kick never happened on the first viewing.
The second viewing is interesting as now you know
that he is dead
some of the conversation they have has a more profound meaning on a second viewing.
Still, I do think the episode overran by a few minutes. For me
the kicker was a tad earlier.
Still, even at it's worst, and this was nowhere near it's worst, the series is sublime television.

I think I read somewhere that the back catalogue is being wiped from some online player soon (or maybe it's already happened), but it might be the BBC i-player, so you should still be good on Netflix, whatever they have on there anyway.

Apart from the Shakespearean opener - which spent a bit too much time being farcical for me - they've been fantastic. Favourite was 'Bernie Clifton' but the 'moving house' tale might take that spot, after a repeat watching...

Another enjoyable episode last night, but the twist was figured out in under 2 minutes by the missus.

Lots of good character stuff, but I didn't really buy the twist -
Firstly, I'd expect at least one of them to recognise her, and secondly it wasn't really clear how she managed to control the decision. It may be clearer on a rewatch.
. Thought it was the weakest of the season so far, but that's the beauty of an anthology - rather like 2000ad, if one doesn't quite float your boat, there'll be a different one along soon.

Multimedia pranking:

The Sun, 25/10/2018

CORONATION Street stars from years gone by are haunting the soap's old set at the Granada Studios in Manchester.

The spooky goings-on are thought to have got so bad, that BBC Two show Inside No 9 has even pulled out of filming there.

According to the Daily Star, stars of the comedy series Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith have decided not to film their live Halloween special at the studio, after hearing it was haunted.

The actors were reportedly freaked out by rumours that Jean Alexander and Pat Phoenix, who played Hilda Ogden and Elsie Tanner on the soap, often visit the set as ghosts.

It is not the first time the set, which hosted the ITV soap for 53 years, has been associated with supernatural encounters.

Last year, a band were left horrified when their equipment randomly exploded during a rehearsal for the Granadaland music festival on set.

I'm claiming I was wise to it all along but I did go through to tell the wife it was broken and a repeat was on instead. Must have thought something was afoot though as I didn't switch over.

In short : hook, line and indeed sinker.
Title: Re: Inside No. 9 (BBC2)

Smelled a rat at the second breakdown, aaaalmost fell for it on the repeat but then the music started to go off.

Played me perfectly.

Did make me wonder a bunch of things though - how much of the original script was written out, wonder if anyone has lip-read the inaudible bits.

What role the action-cam on Reece's helmet would have played in the 'planned' episode since it was wired up to a channel, whether the sub-titles were done live or pre-prepared, and if pre-done that they purposely left mistakes in.

Think the only thing that fell a bit flat was
Stephanie Cole's cutting her own throat - thought they might have rigged a bigger blood spurt for that (or they did and it didn't go to plan)
Also guessing the rehearsal bits were pre-recorded rather than having to get people in and out of costumes/cleaned up within the live bits?

Definitely filmed live as proven when they were back stage and were flicking between channels. The news on BBC 1 at the time was identical.

Funnily enough I've been having an issue with my amp so when the sound cut out the missus got annoyed and said it was time to buy another one. I twigged that it wasn't the amp but she fell for it.

Brilliant episode. So audacious.

Need to watch it again as it whizzed by so quickly.

What had my wife and myself was the fact
that the sound on our TV has been playing up a little recently, and changing channel and then back again fixes it. And that is indeed what we did....it just happened to perfectly time with the sound coming back on with Inside No.9

Reminded me of the brilliant Alexi Sayle show that started mucking about with format and channel identifiers. They got a good three minutes into a very faithful recreation of a "Juliet Bravo"* episode before revealling the actual gag.

An average one this week but it stretched credulity to breaking point so not an absolute favourite. The gags remain a highlight,
eg. the bath water line
.

And, at some point I've managed to enable Audio Described... meaning I watched the show listening to a deadpan Scottish voiceover telling me what I was watching. First time ever. Felt like a mockumentary and wondered what clever point the Gentlemen were making (this time). Sigh (!)
Or maybe my telly is haunted.

Ah ok. I never really liked what (very) little I saw of League. I know some ofthe catchphrases but that's about it.

So this was all lost on me. Though I did think I recognised the character on the lampshade.

Fantastic.

I'm assuming if Psychoville had had a third season, then this would have been a plot point.

Speaking of that show, when David made his grand entrance, all I could think of was that horrendous scene where Maureen "feeds" David!

The third one was an odd beast - kept waiting for a twist that never came (though we can speculate about plenty of backstory -
what happened to Alex's wife 3 years ago? who ran over the loan shark?
)

Not the best episode, but I'm still amazed that they manage to come up with great ideas after 5 seasons.

It's all there...
His wife ran over him, that's why she had damage done to her car.
It was a subtler, different kind of show - which contrasted greatly with the weird grotesqueries of the last episode. I really loved it. (and I loved the last one too, I'm all in for weirdly changing formats)

Ah yes, I forgot the
bit about the car repair bill. I thought it may turn out to be the daughter after all the focus on her driving test. Also wondered if Alex's wife had been run over by the druggie son, starting his spiral off the rails.
Pretty sure they were deliberately playing with expectations, there! Knowing their previous form, my girlfriend was braced for 'something horrible' (her guess - the family would end up making a last stand in the kitchen against an alien invasion!), then turned to me at the end with an 'Oh! That was actually really nice!'

It really worked well. You know anything is possible with the League, so guessing where it's going is hard to avoid. Detective shows and spotting clues aren't usually my thing, but here it's told with flair and humour and even violence (that hits home, given the ordinary setting). Fantastic.

Thought that was a superb, emotional piece of TV, that touched on things that affect all of us. Family, expectations, failures, pressure, debt, mental health. So much of it rang true.

Immediately into my top five of Inside No. 9 episodes.

The performances by Steve Pemberton and Debbie Rush were something else. The way Julia, the mother, lit up at mention of her errant son having eaten on a stag weekend was just mesmerising and heart-breaking. And the knowledge as parents, as they sat with each other at the table that he would be "Moving on" before long... Just amazing writing and performing.

I don't know if they can keep up the quality forever, but I'm hoping they do, because the freshness, and twists of each episode, and the skill and heart that goes into it is something we should feel very lucky to be able to witness.

On their BBC sounds podcast they talked about how they achieved the naturalistic dialogue and performances. They told the Young actor playing the grandson to just talk about something  that had happened at his own school. Apparently the alien thing is an exercise some teachers use to look at life from a different perspective.

Just caught up on the last two & amazed how effortlessly they can go from a Psychoville crossover to a Kitchen-sink drama & yet maintain such quality. Was great to see the end of David's story & loved that Episode three just told a story with no need for anything OTT or some shocking twist, although of course we were all looking out for it.

That one fell slightly flat for me. I appreciated the rug pull they tried
making you think it was a Galen and Angel serial killer thing
but I think they actually spoon fed us too much. I'd have rather had it left open to interpretation.

Oh and the "American" sections had a very false feel for dialogue and accent that kept pulling me out of it.

I did like this week's episode, but I thought the ending was a little rushed. It could have done with bit more space with the main character as she came to terms with her condition before the final confrontation with dad.

Criticisms of the latest episode, I can't agree with. Simply stunning TV, what they've done in 30 mins here is wondrous. Those buggers seemed to have created a zeitgeisty tale this time, boring in itself. How the parts related I did wonder about. And then, the payoff dawns...

No spoilers above. I avoid this thread till I've watched it  :)

Yep. I guessed the 'twist' within the first
few seconds. Talkative dead bloke with mouth full of blood, first thing he does, (chronologically), is tap on the window and asks to be let in and then it turn's out his name is Varney, for flip's sake. That's so unsubtle even I've used it, (first issue of Hallowscream, Grue Believers). Scenario totally confirmed by every single thing that's said and done afterwards.
I'd recommend anyone who didn't guess what was going on to watch the episode again, because it was stoked full of clues.

Probably the single piece of TV drama that has stuck with me more than anything I've watched since childhood. I've only seen it once, and it regularly replays itself in my head.
