General / Bisley / Fabry Megazine cover?
23 July, 2010, 08:41:22 PM
Hey folks,

I just stumbled across the following piece while prowling the Comic Art Fans website...

Listed as: Judge Dredd Megazine 20th anniversary cover, pencils by Fabry, painted by Fabry and Bisley...

Ooooohhhh...

General / A Tharg for Pat Mills
22 July, 2010, 11:08:43 AM
I wanted to call the thread Bring me the head Tharg of Alfredo Garcia Pat Mills but apparently you can't have strikethroughs in the thread title.

Anyway, as I mentioned in the 3A 2000AD toy thread, I was thinking of picking up an extra 3A Tharg as a gift for one of the original creators of 2000AD, with Pat Mills being at the top of the list.  I've moved ahead with this and have now got a second Tharg ready to ship...

The relationship between Pat and 2000AD has had its ups and downs, but I'm pretty certain that he's justifiably proud of a large portion of his contributions to the Galaxy's Greatest and has a good deal of affection for 2000AD.

As such, I'd be willing to take the gamble that he'd accept a Tharg figure in the spirit in which I'd send it - just a small token of appreciation for his role in creating and fuelling the Galaxy's Greatest Comic.  If I was having a Reggie Perrin moment, I'd state the obvious and add that 2000AD wouldn't be where it is today without Pat Mills.

If anyone has a reasonable idea that this is a stupid idea and I should send it to Kev O'Neill instead, I'm all ears!

Otherwise, I'd like to track down a direct mailing address for Pat (or maybe I could send this via the Nerve Centre?)

If anyone wants to chip in on this they're more than welcome, but I'm happy to cover the costs.  We can sort stuff out by p.m. or get a list of names going, but it's happening either way.

Like it says in the title...  I was looking for the '2000AD: The Filthy Bits' (er, genuine research, guv - honest) which contains various knobs, boobs and gratuitous cleavage, and I can't find it.

Either:
(a) I looked at it too long when I knew where it was and went blind, therefore can't see it or
(b) I imagined the whole thing

If anyone can locate the thread, please post a link.  Either that or we need a new one!

General / My Brother: Grexnix
25 May, 2010, 09:02:42 PM
Don't take my word for it - Tharg said so!

When Prog 271 came out I, as an eleven-year old, was mostly very proud of my big brother for getting a picture printed in the Galaxy's Greatest.  I say mostly because I knew his dirty secret - soon to be a matter of public record, with Tharg rubbing his nose in it (not to mention the Rigellian Hotshot).  The shame, the shame...  Having said that; what a bunch of eager snitches!

General / Cam Kennedy Dredd help
21 May, 2010, 09:06:41 AM
Hey folks,

I've finally started picking up a few pieces of original art (started with the Cam Rogue Page in the "Where Are They Now: Cam Kennedy" thread) and need a hand from my fellow Squaxx to continue my quest.

I need to look through Cam's recent Dredd work in 2000AD (~1100 to 1400 ish and Progs 2001 and 2002) and the majority of my Progs are boxed up in the UK (I'm in Norway).  If anyone is willing to either send me some scans, or knows of a resource I can turn to, please let me know (either here or p.m. me).

I've got a list of Progs that need looking up if it'll help.

Cheers,

David

General / Giant Sea Scorpions revisited
21 November, 2007, 11:31:48 AM
Aaiiieee!! Please let me drown before... etc.

There was a thread a while back about giant sea scorpions a la Flesh, but I was unable to find it.  There's a piece about a new find in today's Grauniad (see link), and here's the figure from the paper it's based on.

Prog / Prog 1555: Dead of Knight
17 September, 2007, 02:17:13 PM
The cover is yet another helping of Langley ABC Warrior portrait goodness.  This time it's Deadlock, with a nice McCarthy look.  Great stuff.

In Dredd this week, Nate Slaughterhouse is back, which came as a nice surprise - obviously I haven't been paying attention lately.  I knew a return was on the cards, just not now.  They can chain his body but his mind stays free; er... soon to be followed by his body.  Maybe they didn't handle that thing with his wife very well after all.  Anyway, although Kev Walker would have been better on art, I've no complaints at all here.  Great stuff.

I've really enjoyed this second outing of Stone Island, and I just hope it doesn't lose the plot like the first.  Glorious other-worldly colours and a lot of explaining this week.  Line of the week: "She's packing enough meat an' two veg to make a cart horse proud".  Good stuff.

ABC Warriors sees developments with Ikon and his mates in the asylum, and moves on to Deadlocks recollections of the Watchtower.  Is that bit at the end part of the flashback, or related to the events at the asylum?  Either way, I'm enjoying all this.  Great stuff.

Caballistics, Inc. is just bloody great.  Great stuff.

Button Man IV is also great, and Mr. Irving does an extremely good job of stepping into some very large shoes.  Harry's being pressured to get back in the game, but he's on his toes.  He's really not a very nice man, is he?  No sign of the daughter this week.  Great stuff.

All in all, another great Prog.  No dead wood, just finely-tuned thrills, just the way we like 'em.  Cheers, Green-bonce!

Suggestions / The Meg: Work in Progress
16 August, 2007, 12:23:40 PM
Along with a larger page count per issue for ongoing strips, one thing I think would be good in the Meg is a look at how 2000AD artists ply their trade.  The recent look at how the next series of Stickleback is being put together on D'israeli's blog (as well as his previous Leviathan demo) made me think that this kind of thing would be as (if not more) welcome  than many of the recent article offerings.  Not a long-life addition to the Meg, but maybe an interesting one?

Just a thought.

Prog / Prog 1550 - 200AD: In a World of its own
11 August, 2007, 09:00:31 PM
First time I've ever bagged a Prog review thread, and a big surprise to get my Prog-drop on a Saturday, as it's been getting to Norway on Thursdays for the last couple of weeks...

Anyway, a lovely thick glossy cover contains some tasty treats: Picks of the bunch are three Great Moments in Thrill-Power pin-ups (Bad Company, Halo Jones, Strontium Dog), which are a very nice touch indeed.

Dredd, ABC Warriors (10 pages) and Stone Island (10 pages) are the only thrills this week, and I'll be back when I've had chance to sit down and read the damn thing rather than just look at the pretty pictures.

Off Topic / Farewell Kurt Vonnegut
12 April, 2007, 09:07:42 AM
I know Art added Kurt Vonnegut to the RIP thread, but my reply didn't get added and I thought others here might want to add something and face the same problem.

I've loved his books for many years, from Sirens of Titan onwards, and although his passing doesn't come as a surprise, it's a damn shame.  Time for a big re-read!  Particularly looking forward to Cat's Cradle and Bluebeard, which are favourites that I've not read for ages.

One of my all-time favourite jokes is found in Jailbird and runs along these lines:

A man suddenly kisses a nearby woman passionately...
She, outraged: "How dare you kiss me like that!"
He, shrugging innocently: "I was only trying to find out who ate all the marshmallows..."

General / LJ Silver
01 February, 2007, 09:07:47 AM
Although I knew that LJ Silver was Carlos Ezquerra, on reading the interview with Ezquerra in the 1984 Dredd annual again recently, it seems that he used this pseudonym on stories with which he wasn't happy with his work.  Anyone care to give us a list, partial or otherwise?http://www.2000adonline.com/covers/specials/mediumres/dredd84.jpg">

Suggestions / 2000AD Trailers
30 January, 2007, 10:58:30 AM
Can we have some more of these please, Green Bonce?  It was very nice to have a taster of Chairy-scary and Origins, and similar efforts for some other upcoming thrills would be great.  A Stickleback trailer would have burned out many a thrill-buffer, I'll warrant.  I realise these are hardly a high priority, but as the website is all set up, how about making the most of it?  Go on, you know you want to.

Suggestions / Return of Starscans?
14 November, 2006, 02:57:29 PM
This prog's wraparound cover got me thinking about Starscans.  When was the last time we had one?  Looking into some of the starscans for past thills gives us a few openings for a revival... not a peep from such popular thrills as Nikolai Dante, Sinister Dexter, The Red Seas...  Can we have a couple?  Go on, Green Bonce, you know you want to...

Some favourites from t'olden days (check the full size covers for maximum thrill power):

Film & TV / Frostbite
23 October, 2006, 10:03:21 AM
We've got the Bergen International Film Festival on at the moment, and last night I went to see Frostbitt / Frostbiten (or Frostbite to you) with the missus.  No idea if this has / will make it to the UK, but basically It's a vampire flick set in a small town in Arctic Sweden.  With a set-up that includes elements of Fiends of the Eastern Front meets 30 Days of Night it could have been really good.

Unfortunately it wasn't that great, 'cos they set most of it in teh present, and made it (mainly) in a comedy vein.  B'dum - tish.  Although some of it was pretty funny, if I want comedy vampires, I'll watch Mr Vampire (which I do, frequently).  However, the opening is great, and quite a treat for any Fiends fans.  I vaguely remember there was another WWII vampire film (was it 'The Bunker'?) and it got me thinking.  Was it any good?  Any other recommendations along these lines?

Other things seen at BIFF: The Departed (amazing remake of a great Hong Kong flick), Through a Scanner Darkly, The Queen, Children of Men.  To come: Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (again), Dumplings, and a few documentaries.

General / Case Files 04 - Future Shop?
16 June, 2006, 10:26:02 PM
Any idea when this might appear in the Future Shop?  I've been planning to pick this up along with Case Files 03 and a few other bits and bobs, I just wanted to get them all together...

Cheers,

Just saw a trailer for this.  Un-be-feckin'-lieveable.  Dire is hardly the word to describe this, and hopefully all copies of it will shortly be buried under a motorway somewhere.

...you hear a low and distant groaning one block to the east and two blocks to the north on your way to work.

...when you get to work you immediately begin barricading your office.

...it costs you 10AP to get up in the morning.
