Help! / Posting Images
10 March, 2020, 04:57:10 PM
Haven't uploaded anything in a while, and I see that Photobucket has completely gone to shit (adding watermarks to images wtf?). What are other people using to share images these days?

Books & Comics / House of X/Powers of X
04 December, 2019, 09:09:03 PM
Anybody read this?

I must say I'm a bit intrigued by all the buzz around it - it's even getting coverage in some fairly mainstream publications, and I gather the collection is out next week.

Bearing in mind I have almost no frame of reference - I think the only X comics I've ever read are Grant Morrison's New X Men run and some of Joss Whedon's Astonishing X Men - is it worth checking out? Will I be completely lost?

Film & TV / Avengers: Endgame Spoiler Thread
26 April, 2019, 04:50:56 PM
What did we all think?

I actually had a really good time, probably enjoyed it more so than Infinity War. Went to see it at my favourite cinema here in Portland opening night and had to queue (queueing for the cinema! in 2019!). It was a packed house and the atmosphere was amazing and really added to the experience - whooping, cheering, applause, people audibly crying. When Cap picked up Mjolnir for the first time, the place went absolutely nuts - it was like being at a sporting event.

For me the movie clicked when it became clear that they were going for a Back to the Future Part II setup - with past-Thanos taking the role of future-Biff.

Really really fun movie packed full of surprises and a satisfying end for the original Avengers lineup (so long as you go with the flow and don't try to think about the logic of the time travel plot that is), though I think Black Widow got a bit short-changed.

Genuinely baffled as to what on Earth they're going to do next, or how they're going to top it in terms of spectacle - the end battle makes the airport fight scene from Civil War look like a scrap in a pub carpark.

The one misstep was Captain Marvel's hairstyle - which looked like a bad wig, and exactly like Leslie Knope in that episode of Parks and Rec. Captain Marvel in general felt almost entirely redundant, and the stinger from Infinity War kind of seems like a red herring in retrospect.

It ain't all PewDiePie, Logan Paul and unboxing videos...

To counter the other thread, lets have recommendations of channels doing great work on the platform. Imo there is a generation of very talented and creative individuals coming up that are putting out genuinely great content that is of a increasingly polished and professional standard. Here goes:

Philosophy Tube - brilliant short video essays about various subjects.

I Am Incorrigible - this guy basically just collates/edits together various bits of news coverage - essential for following the whole Brexit debacle as I live in the US.

Red Letter Media - needs no introduction, really. Their humour isn't for everyone, but their content - specifically their 'Best of the Worst/Wheel of the Worst' shows often border on avant garde and make me laugh more than any mainstream comedy show.

Jeremy Parrish - One half of the retro gaming podcast Retronauts who has a side hobby of cataloguing and reviewing in painstaking detail every single title released for the NES, Game Boy, SNES and now Mega Drive and N64 in slick and informative mini documentaries. He is doing God's work.

Alt Shift X - superb documentaries/animated infographics deep diving into Game of Thrones/ASoIaF lore and fan theories.

Arlo - quite simply, a literal muppet that covers all things Nintendo. Unlike most videogame coverage, his content is 100% free of snark and cynicism. I love him!

Three Arrows - pretty heavy channel by a German dude who primarily specialises in combatting and debunking right wing and far right propaganda. Also recommend Shaun whose channel is along similar lines.

Some More News - a biting and exasperated satirical take on current events by a host who often seems on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Simultaneously funny and bleak.

Jim Sterling - videogame-related rants - he often goes a bit over the top for my liking but has a certain turn of phrase that is often amusing.

Shut Up & Sit Down - tabletop board game reviews by amiable British chaps.

HBomberguy - hard to pin down exactly what it is he does, really. Sort of loosely covering pop culture stuff with a surreal/leftist/Social Justice slant. Like him a lot.

MovieBob - movie critic. I don't agree with him about everything but he certainly knows his stuff.

SNES Drunk - super nintendo related trivia and listicles

Contrapoints - clever, witty and acerbic video essays on all sorts of things.

Lindsay Ellis - brilliant pop culture analysis and video essays. Her three part series about the Hobbit movies is I would say definitive.

Swede Mason - absurdist musical mashups

Dankmus - absurdist musical Simpsons mashups

Neil Cicierega - absurdist pop music mashups

I'm a photography nerd so I also follow a lot of photographers, among them:
Joe Allam
James Popsys
Peter McKinnon
Thomas Heaton

Help! / Printing advice
05 February, 2016, 06:58:19 PM
Ok, this is a random one, but i think a couple of boarders here work in graphics/repro so thought it would be worth a shot.

Basically, i'm thinking of getting some illustrations printed onto kraft paper or board (that recycled, textured brown cardboard type stuff) for an exhibition type thing, but google isn't really coming up with anything. It'll just be simple blackline pen and ink type drawings.

Anyone know of a reputable online company that can do this kind of thing?

Creative Common / Drawing Productivity Tips
19 January, 2016, 07:34:29 PM
Wanted to see if anyone has any kind of warm up routines or specific practices to keep productive when it comes to drawing/painting etc (or really any other creative endeavour).

My problem has always been that I'm not the speediest artist at the best of times, but also that almost every single time I sit down to draw I have to spend/waste 2-3 hours, sometimes even an entire day, churning out complete and utter shit and banging my head against a brick wall until I feel like I can actually produce anything halfway decent, and often by the time I'm through the barrier and have found my mojo again it's late and time for bed. I'll sometimes spend ages and ages grafting away on a picture that I think is really working, before suddenly the scales fall from my eyes and I realise its unsalvageable crap. This knowledge starts to play on my mind and really puts me off even bothering to try because I know I'll have to go through the whole painful process before I can even do anything worthwhile. Its enormously frustrating and is a large part of the reason that I have never seriously pursued a career in comics or illustration.

Now, largely this is down to not practising enough and having long periods of inactivity (which I am trying to address) - but it isn't just this, as often one day I'll be really productive, then the very next day it's like I have completely forgotten how to hold a pencil again.

So any tips or habits over creatives and professionals have of how to get round this would be much appreciated. Or even just some reassurance that it isn't just me that has this problem...

Creative Common / DREDD 2: A Fan Poster
16 October, 2015, 02:03:17 AM
Here's a little something I've been working on for a while now - I had the idea for the image and thought it might be a fun little 'what if' type project.

It was also a personal challenge to myself to learn a bit about digital painting, and to do something way out of my comfort zone, that isn't in my usual fallback, goofy drawing style. It's also probably the first big thing I've done that is pretty much 100% digital - aside from a tiny 1x1" thumbnail I scanned in as a starting point, everything was done in Photoshop.

Film & TV / Game of Thrones Season 5
13 April, 2015, 05:18:00 PM
It's baaaaaack!

Very solid opening episode, I thought. It's astonishing how they keep ramping up the stakes, and how each season seems bigger and even more visually impressive than the last. It seems like they won't be doing anything else with
Mance
and that's probably for the best - I can't imagine the switcheroo they pull in the books working on screen and it's yet another plotline they wouldn't really have time for.

They're obviously going to be doing a lot of consolidating and cutting to get the plots of books four and five down to something manageable, and I totally get that. For the most part it works, I think. They're obviously fast-forwarding Tyrion's plotline, which is a no-brainer. The teased prospect of him
meeting up with Danaerys
really got my girlfriend (a far more casual viewer than me) interested so it makes sense to progress to that as soon as possible to keep up the momentum. I enjoyed books four and five more than most people seemed to, but they do feel like that episode of Itchy and Scratchy where they never make it to the fireworks factory.

A couple of minor quirks - did I imagine it or did
Sansa and Littlefinger ride right past Pod and Brienne?
Because if so that's more than a little silly. And I wasn't entirely happy with the way they're playing Stannis and Melisandre so far. I
hope they don't portray them as straight antagonists for Jon Snow, as the tension, then subsequent burgeoning mutual respect between Jon, Stannis and Mel really showed another side to them and made them really likeable figures for the first time - to the point where I was really rooting for Stannis for the first time in the series.
Really looking forward to Theon's storyline this season, which for me was the standout of A Dance with Dragons. He's probably my favourite character in the whole series. During Dance it really dawned on me  - Theon is ASoIaF's Gollum/Smeagol isn't he?

Games / Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number
25 February, 2015, 08:08:33 PM
Jazzed for this... any love for Hotline Miami on the board?

After what seems like an eternity of delays and waiting, Hotline Miami 2 now officially has a release date - March 10th.

If you haven't heard of or played it, imagine if someone made an ultraviolent NES game based on the film Drive. I gather there's an actual plot to these games but really all you need to know if that you play as a weird misanthrope and have to murder your way through floors of buildings to pounding electro music.

It's currently 10% off if you pre-order now on Steam.

Help! / Wacom Advice
01 December, 2014, 07:15:43 PM
I'm thinking about investing in a new Wacom, as the one I currently have (an Intuous4 Large) is just too big and unwieldy for my current desk space to use comfortably, and I also want the wireless capability to reduce clutter.

The 'small' (either Intuous5 or 'Pro') would be perfect size-wise, but I'm concerned it might be too small, considering I use a 27" monitor.

Ideally I'd be able to try it out myself, but failing that does anyone here have any hands-on experience of using smaller tablets on a large screen?

Books & Comics / Star Wars Digital Comics Humble Bundle
29 October, 2014, 04:21:51 PM
Not my cup of blue milk, but Humble Bundle are currently offering a shit-tonne of Dark Horse Star Wars Comics tpbs in their latest deal. No Wagner or Cam Kennedy as far as I can see, bu the roster does include several Omnibus collections.

It's a pay what you want deal for the first 6 tpbs, (currently) $10.72 or more to get 15, then the whole set of 16 books for $15 or more.

Thought it might interest some of you lot....

QuoteUsagi fans, by popular demand, here's the latest version of the proof of concept short film that we created and presented to Stan. This is the short film that allowed us to procure the feature film rights!

It's a still a work-in-progress and about 90% complete. We're currently working on the sound mix and refining the film for the DVD release which will include behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, deleted scenes, and interesting details regarding the making of the featurette.

Books & Comics / Humble Image Bundle
29 April, 2014, 09:37:14 PM
Just saw this on the Twitters, and not 100% sure if it's available in the UK, but check it out:

https://www.humblebundle.com/?imagecomics_bundle&utm_source=imagecomics&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=Humble%20Image%20Comics%20Bundle

Humble Image Bundle - pay what you want for digital editions volumes one of East of West, Fatale, Lazarus and Morning Glories, and if you pay the average (just over a fiver) you get volume one of Saga, Revival and Chew too!

Well worth a punt.

Games / The Board Game Thread
21 February, 2014, 03:13:04 PM
I'm gambling that there's a fair few board game players on this board, so thought I'd start a thread for general discussion, tips, news and especially recommendations etc of all thing board game - primarily 'serious' board and card games, but also happy to chat RPGs (though not a RPG guy myself) or the more common varieties (your Parker Brothers/Waddingtons/Hasbro etc).

I've recently dipped my toe in the board game waters when I, on a whim, requested a copy of Carcassonne for my birthday. It remained in its box for 6 months, and everyone I showed/told about it were very skeptical, but eventually I managed to convince a few friends and relatives to try a game with me, and it turns out it's fantastic fun - seriously, if you've never played it I can highly recommend it - it's extremely simple and quick to learn, gently competitive but not too much so, and really fast-paced too - an average game lasts about half an hour.

Its got to the point now where I've started a mini craze for the game in my social circle (had my family visiting recently and it was lovely that every night we'd all gather round the table for a few games, prying them away from their phones and tablets for a couple of hours!), and I've also bought the first two (of many) expansion sets - 'Inns and Cathedrals' and 'Traders and Builders'. I've also bought the iPad version, which is great for practice, but is a somewhat tweaked version of the board game.

I have a friend who's into the more hardcore side of things, and have played the Walking Dead board game with him, which was really good fun, but I tend to find it can be really hard to get a game of the more complicated games going as the average person is put off by the complexity (though funnily enough most people will play a game of the - imo - tedious and long-winded Monopoly - go figure).

I've heard good things about The Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride and Fluxx - and I'm sorely tempted to buy the Fantasy Flight Game of Thrones board game too (despite fearing that I'll never be able to convince anyone to play it with me!). The new Star Wars X-Wing/TIE Fighter game looks intriguing, but perhaps a little too nerdy/expensive to bother with.
