BFG edition is the original Xbox version of Doom 3, only with much better graphics and a save system that actually works and doesn't fuck your enjoyment of the game right in the ass.  BFG Edition also comes with free copies of Doom and Doom 2 on the same disc, which are ace but don't feature the fantastically ominous PS1 soundtrack.

BFG is certainly going to be the purchase thanks to the replies I've received here but unfortunately, ill pet cat means 'trip to the vet next week' over 'buy new game and have fun.'
