Wahey!  A West country con.  Tooth to boot.  Now, where did I put that permission to go out form?  If I slip it under my wife's eyes now she might think its for one of the kids and sign it without thinking! :P

Apart from tickets on sale Jan/Feb, not really - doubt they'd announce any guests until then in case circumstances change and anyone has to cancel due to work etc.

People are mainly talking about hotels to book etc. on the fb group.

FAKE NEWS!

I did not vomit on a lady, there was possibly a speck of wind-propelled splashback, but in my defense it was a very windy day and a huge bluebottle that shot straight into the back of my throat. I'm gagging at the memory.

That aside it was a great day, some fantastic costumes and who knew Ian Gibson was so funny? There'll be no Lawgiver 5 as Rebellion have pulled the plug, but there will be a wider brit-comic con (with a lot of Dredd)

I sadly didn't catch a single panel while manning the table/taking photos.

The worst thing I could say about the con was that the artist room was pretty stuffy, although nowhere near the hottest I've been to.

It seemed a lot busier than the last one - could possibly even stretch to a 2-dayer with a couple of extra panels.

We worried about filling the space we had, but combined with Planet Replicas table and Lee Carter, Paul Williams and Dan Cornwell shifted from the main artist bit we needn't had worried. Apart from the odd lull when people went into panels it was very busy, and Dan from Planet Replicas said he did well out of it.

I think they've reached the limits of what they could get in there - there was a dealers room that could have had a couple of artists which thankfully had open windows.

Shame that Rebellion have decided on squashing it in that form, but offer no official alternative - any suggestion after the 40th of doing something every year was met with a 'not likely'.

There's obviously a market for something like this, and encourages interest in what is a niche area compared to the US/Media side.

Fair play to the organisers for finding a way around it and going ahead with an alternative in whatever form it takes.

Apparently Rebellion were at MCM.  Looking at the website, if that was the case then I would politely suggest that this was a waste and a half.  Attending an event that is geared toward extracting as much cash from punters as possible versus attending an event that is geared toward a fan base that is highly supportive and willing to part with their cash in support of creative talent that they admire and respect.

Granted the audience were a very specific demographic (hell of a lot of folks who were able to provide early progs and had a detailed knowledge of tooth history) but it was the sort of event I would have more than happily taken my kids to.  It would have been nice to see a few more tables in the dealers room.  Again, a case of Rebellion missing a trick.
Title: Re: Lawgiver MK4

Yes, 2000 AD at MCM this weekend with Barbara, the colourist on the Halo Jones reprint.

Unless you can plough in the money for these kind of events, small stalls can get a bit lost.

That was certainly the case the last one of those I went to, the 2000 AD stall was squirrelled away and pretty quiet compared to the heaving bustle filling the rest of the ExCel.

I get trying to reach beyond the same old demographic that would typify Lawgiver, same with the appearance at the tattoo convention.

I don't think they necessarily need to attend Lawgiver, and it might actually put off creators to have someone official hovering around. But maybe the odd tweet or facebook post with the disclaimer that it's unofficial.

Possibly having a local comic shop shifting graphic novels would have been an idea.

As far as I can work out, the main bone of contention seems to be bootleg merchandise - and there wasn't a lot of it that I could see.

What little there was would be hard to argue to the case for it being copyright infringing I'd imagine.

The funniest story was someone who'd received a C&D for selling t-shirts for a 2000AD fb group, and the t-shirt printer had suggested 'money laundering' as a possible reason for selling them.

My response was "I can think of a more popular IP to bootleg if I was going to launder money."

I understand Rebellion want to protect their IP, I really do - but there's a tendency to go for the low hanging fruit, and it kills off any remaining enthusiasm people have for the prog or putting money Rebellion's way.

If 2000 AD was a bigger brand, it wouldn't matter - but it's not.

I get that fandom can be hard work, but that goes with the territory.

Rebellion's current policy seems to be to concrete over as much as they can and just have this single pot plant that they can have some control of. (See also Rebellion's attempt to copyright Rebellion everywhere recently, and the response on Twitter)

Surely there has to be a better approach?

Lawgiver 4 was perfect. Lovely to hear Ian Gibson & Mick McMahon talking about 2000ad. Mick always seemed to have a long queue but my sketch of Rico in his new style was well worth the wait. Art droids Goddard, Langley, Bisley, Cornwell, Flint & all the others were generous with their time & drawing skills. I wish Rebellion had been there to hear some future news but I'd rather they reached out to the general fans who may have forgotten the prog at bigger cons. My idea of 2000ad fandom can include everyone - the biker who loves cosplay, the father reading the prog with his kids, the woman who just buys the odd tpb, even the grouch who claims 'it's worse now than in the 90s'. Thanks for all turning up in Bristol. We are all Tharg now.

Absolutely brilliant weekend - such a great laugh! It definitely could do with an extra day though, which I believe could be on the cards if the next event does well.
It was also wonderful to hear from the artists on the guest panels - invaluable insight for a wanna-be art droid like myself. Listening to the talks from Bisley, Fabry, McMahon, Gibson, Williams, Foster, Austin and Cornwall, hearing their experiences and advice to artists, it got me thinking how brilliant it would be if there was some sort of book made featuring 2000ad artists sharing their experiences, their tips on drawing and their advice - something sort of along the lines of "How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way", but with more about and from the artists themselves - from Ezquerra, McMahon, Gibbons, and their peers through to the artists of today like Flint, McNeil, Goddard, etc.

I dunno, it sounds like a good idea in my head because it's exactly what I need right now...
Just a thought, anyway.

Only thing is that the Marvel Way was the house style, and one of the main strengths of 2000AD for me is that there isn't a house style (apart from when McMahon got told to imitate Ezquerra and Ewins didn't have much choice about imitating Bolland) - something that struck me in Judge Caligula Book One, with the mopad as drawn by bolland then immediately followed by McMahon's version.  It'd have to be How to Draw Comics Any Which Way ;)
Title: Re: Lawgiver MK4
Post by: Andy Lambert on 29 May, 2018, 11:25:33 PM
Oh I totally get that there's no "uniform" way of doing it, but that's why it appeals to me - different perspectives, different experiences, different tips in drawing along with advice. McMahon suggested (and he wasn't the only one to say this) that if you want to go into comics, don't go to art school. Gibson gave advice on how to depict passages of time, or how to show a fight scene as something fast paced and not using multiple angles, and he also mentioned you need a good eye for design to do well in comics.
I'm just imagining all these tips, experiences and words of advice collected together - it may not all be relevant to everyone, but at least some things could resonate with some people. It's the diversity of these artists and what they've experienced, thus yielding different views and tips, that make this an appealing idea to me.
Perhaps "How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way" was a poor example to use.

I think it's a great idea - most marketable would be Dredd obviously.

How different artists approach Dredd and his world, maybe even an examination of those whose style has changed over the years, Dredd covers, the tech, the city, technique in analog vs digital.

There's probably a lot of stuff already via Pete's covers blog, commissions etc.

McMahon gave us "how to draw Judge Dredd in 3 easy steps" in one of the old annuals, but as step one seemed to be 'draw a perfect sketch of Dredd', my 12 year old self didn't find it very useful!

Lol, yeah I remember that McMahon thing too - it was in my mind when I was mentioning this, but yeah, from the basic shapes to the finished result would be good.

Pete's blogs on the covers is a great example of what I mean - collected together, along with insights in how an artist draws a character, a panel or a page, would be like the ultimate art bible to me.

I have never got to grips with inking using a brush because of Mick and that specific feature. "Use a dip pen," he said, so I did, eschewing the felt tips that had been my previous weapon of choice. Never been able to get on with a brush since.

That's one thing that has always made me laugh with Bolland.  Whilst his artwork is gorgeous, he can't draw future city scapes or vehicles to save his life.  His version of the moped is a cone on wheels.  Mcmahon's version clearly follows but gives his spin.  Then you get Leach's pat wagon which looks incredibly menacing.  Lots to love in the same story.

Burdis and I were in there sweating while queuing after midday.  Burdis said something like 'You'd think they'd sort the air con in here' to which I replied 'Isn't that the switch over there?'.  One flick of Burdis's finger later, and the room miraculously became a lot cooler.  Who'd a thunk it?    :D

Anyway, epic con, totally bloody loved it - really annoyed Rebellion have given it the red card in it's current form.  It's almost as if they don't want fans of their IP to get together and celebrate it.

I reckon the next version should be called 'Super Armoured Future Cop' or somesuch.

That aside, I did my first ever exhibit of anything ever - a mix of my models and contributions I'd managed to round up from others in the weeks leading up to it.  I was very pleased that my grubby cabinets filled with random tat seem to garner such praise.  Thanks to anyone who swung by and had a look!

I think the highlight for me was Glenn Fabry's panel, when he described what happened when he and that Dominic Whatsisface from Preacher appeared at the same con in the US.  It was hilarious.  You had to be there.

I think you have to treat those sort of statements with a tiny pinch of salt. For all we know, that might have been the most tactful way they could think of to phrase "we're not going to touch this with a bargepole."

(There was definitely a brief window when 'adult colouring books' (ie: for grown-ups, not (necessarily) rude) were quite the hot thing and even a niche one might have been worth partnering with someone who had the necessary production pipeline and distribution contacts to produce it at the scale Rebellion would have needed to make it worthwhile. That window was definitely closing by the time the book was even first mooted.)

Anyway, epic con, totally bloody loved it - really annoyed Rebellion have given it the red card in it's current form.  It's almost as if they don't want fans of their IP to get together and celebrate it. sell bootlegs of it.

FTFY.

Simplistic.

As someone who was actually there, helping out on Dan's stand he did very well out of selling licensed stuff.

Things like the LG t-shirts, seems a bit of a stretch to claim ownership on a word that predates Dredd or Rebellion's use of it.

Certainly compared to people having webstores selling 2012 helmets/stuff that they appear not to be able to do anything about, it was small beans.

Simplistic.

I have no inside track on this, but it looks like Rebellion feel differently. I'm not sure how often it needs to be explained that companies that don't defend their IP run the risk of creating precedents and loopholes that can bite them in the arse very badly when they really need to defend their copyrights, but they do. I think you get that, Steve, but there seem to be lots who don't.

People cry 'But I had to buy Heavy Armoured Cop because Rebellion wouldn't make one' ... well, Rebellion wanted to make one, and negotiations for the license to do something of that ilk were directly torpedoed by the influx of the bootleg figures into a very small niche market. Bootlegging has consequences, and we, as fans, should be more cognisant of them. Shutting down a bootlegger in another legal jurisdiction is a lengthy, expensive, complicated process. It's not 'low hanging fruit' to go after the domestic ones, it's just as necessary, but it's also easier and quicker.

I'm not talking about other jurisdictions, Jim.

I'm talking about this country, where (I'm guessing due to whatever deal was done on the 2012, they're unable to do much about bootleg movie helmets, since that very similar design resides with the movie makers), but sure go after someone making lanyards...

As far as I know, there's no registered tm on Lawgiver the way there is for Judge Dredd (in its own way an appropriated name)

There's also the twitter kicking that Jason got when Rebellion tried to extend usage of Rebellion.

I just find it slightly hypocritical that on the one hand they'll clap their hands when parody law change allows them to print Ronald McDonald executing an employee, but have an attack of the vapours over this.

What I saw was a bunch of sellers selling official merchandise, or original pages from the comic, or licensed stuff from the likes of Planet Replicas.

I even saw people selling stuff that bore no relation to 2000AD (such as the bookstall), but were licensed goods nonetheless.

Even the tombola was to win all fully licensed and already paid for items.

There were some Lawgiver tees on sale, the profits from which got ploughed straight into next year's event, where more licensed stuff can be sold - such as more Planet Replicas gear.

I also saw a lot of eager fans showing off their homemade costumes of the 2000AD universe, surrounded by a bunch of great artists all there to sign the hundreds of already bought and paid for copies of licensed graphic novels and comics.  I got two copies of 2000AD signed myself, and got lots of awesome sketches that I didn't pay a penny for.

I also got to display my own models from the 2000AD universe, brought to the convention under my own steam at my own expense, none of which were for sale.  That was the same for everyone else who contributed to my exhibit.

It was an absolute joy from start to finish.

Rackle and I turned up about the time you were on the home stretch of laying out the Citadel (?) figures, but we returned later to look at the complete display.  Rackle says "It was nice to see Sensitive Klegg in the flesh"

For those of you who didn't get to LawgIVer, I've got a 'very' limited number of the Zarjaz programmes from the gig.

If anyone out there wants one, then they will be free with orders as long as you let me know you want one.

A great little convention.

Reminded me of the old Doctor Who and Star Trek conventions, that you see photos of, before they returned to mainstream and went mega. When they were being kept alive by the fandom.

I went to a Blakes 7 convention last year and it had a similar vibe. Fan fuelled and very positive.

The guest list was insanely good. I wanted to grab a chat with Mick McMahon and thought I'd wait until his queue went down, but it never happened.

I was letting people try on my Planet Replicas Judge costumes. Lots of takers (see photo of a small selection). Planet Replicas seemed to be shifting some stock. Lots of interest and feedback on their up coming products.

Cheers, glad you enjoyed!  SK remains my favourite of all the models I made, but some seemed to like Werewolf Dredd too, and I know at least one person would have loved their own Don Uggie!

Later in the afternoon I was able to stand next to it and chat to folk about all the models and contributions.  In particular I loved showing the Globular Rad-Sleet simulator in action!  I think I need to think of adding other moving elements to future models, as shaking up that globe really brought the scene to life.  At least one person asked where I had bought it, and raised an eyebrow when I said I made it!   :D

Richards miniatures caused all kinds of nostalgia for the tabletop gaming of our youth, and Sarah Lea's steampunk Lawgiver garnered admiration from all!

I recommend you get in there fast folks!  Mike Collins did a superb cover, and the content is very enjoyable indeed!  Kudos to all at Zarjaz for doing this!

On a final note, here's a great video summary of the event (my cabinets get a quick mention too - wahey! :D )

Yeah,

I don't think that helps calm things down at all, and wasn't instigated by the people by Lawgiver as far as I know.

Best thing they can do IMHO is to what they'd planned to - call it something else, and expand the scope of it beyond just Dredd/2000AD.

Presumably, it's the theme Tharg doesn't like. They could have called next year's event Fluffy-Con and still faced the same problem.

Su has posted the email from Rebellion on the rebranded FB page, which discusses why any Dredd related events will need to be strictly licensed from here on in. Having read it I now understand much better why they have made that move, and feel two things:

a) it seems fair and
b) super excited, as it seems major plans are afoot for the world of Dredd!

What a great time to be a fan!  :)

Su's post on facebook goes as follows...

QuoteOfficial Announcement!!!

Following on from the very successful LawgiverMK4, we are pleased to announce that we are expanding our event!

In short – we have not been granted permission to continue Lawgiver in its current guise as the UKs Only Judge Dredd Convention. For clarity, I have copied and pasted the statement I received from Rebellion in November last year.

"...However due to ongoing developments arising from the Mega City One TV series - and an evolving licensing, consumer products and events strategy for 2018 and onwards - I do need to inform you that this will be the last time that we will be able to grant permission for the Lawgiver festival to run in its current guise. We're wholly aware of the loyal and knowledgeable Judge Dredd fan base our obligations to them, but with the heightened visibility provided by a major broadcast release, our ambition is to build new relationships with partners and venues to develop and deliver more Judge Dredd and 2000 AD events and experiences. Official sanction for events branded as Judge Dredd-related will move to a strictly licensed category, established on a commercial contract basis."

Comments have been switched off for this post – not for censorship, but so this groups community doesn't get bogged down in negative speculation. Lawgiver has a hard earned reputation for being a well organised, professional and friendly event and it is important that we continue to uphold this civility and friendly atmosphere going forward.

*steps off soap box*

Therefore, we are very proud to introduce Lawless: A Celebration of British Comics!! Lawless will be held on Saturday 18th May 2019 at the Doubletree by Hilton, Bristol. It will run in the same format as before with guests signings, panels, traders, and small press as well as the usually gatherings afterwards. Cosplay is always welcome as well!

Opening up the event to include British comics gives us the opportunity to tap into the wonderful history of artists and writers who have worked on everything from Tank Girl to The Beano. Naturally we will continue to include Dredd/2000AD as it is such a huge part of the British comic culture and all of our wonderful guests this year have already said they'd love to join us again! We hope to have more guests than ever next year! Tickets will go on sale in January 2019 once we have confirmed the first set of guests and launched the new website. As usual, tickets will be £25 online and £30 on the door.

LawgiverMKIV was a huge success and we're eager to continue growing and evolving as a comic event.

We do hope you'll all come and join us next year for Lawless: A Celebration of British Comics!!

It's a shame that so much discussion about Rebellion's motives and the new name suggestions etc went on before Su had made the statement/announcement, which she'd said was coming. People are free to react to things, of course (and it was publicly announced that they weren't allowed to use the Dredd name/imagery anymore) but I bet it made things a lot more stressful for her than it needed to be!

Thanks for that Andy, helpful to see what we are actually discussing.  In fact it makes a lot more sense to speak based on accurate information than half baked speculation.  Pity it doesn't happen more often!

As for the evolution, looks interesting.  Will keep eyes peeled for developments.
