Yay! Caught it on the radio. Pity the towns filled with Chavs and Spides tonight though.

Smoking is illegal everywhere except smokatoriums.

Possible (made up reason) Euthenasia allows you to give the Judges notification of your death and allows you to put your house (tax/property/job/etc) in order (400 million people - not many have jobs) whereas a suicide needs to be investigated (did he jump/was he pushed) and will, as a consequence eat into Judicial resources.

Probably (more likely reason) cus the writers said so.

Books & Comics / Re: Copyright / Copywrong?...
14 August, 2005, 02:07:55 AM
>>There has been some rants on this board, a little bit girly from what I have read and with very little substance about the exact legal position

Legally:

The exact legal position is: If you have not obtained the permission from the copyright holder, regardless of your reasons, reproducing the copyright material in whole or part is ILLEGAL.

>>relating to the reproduction of older comics into mediums that preserve the work for future generations on less volatile materials.

This is a spurious argument, while it's financially viable for Rebellion to reprint material they will do so (2000AD makes its money from creating new stuff as well as reprinting/licencing of old stuff). Therefore the material is already preserved for future generation on less volatile material.

>>As you may discern I do not agree with many of the comments already made. I do not however have to reduce the debate to name calling - I will, coz I can be as much of a child as anyone - but I would rather weigh up the pros and cons and decide exactly who is suffering from this,

If someone distributes 2000AD material to such an extent that it influences the decision making process of what will be reprinted then it will effect financially, the company, the staff and the creators of the material. Comics is a VERY poorly paid field, very few artists/writers can exist on the small amount of commissioned work they do without working outside of that field. Income from reprint fees can be an essential part of that income.  Most (if not all) of the creators from the early days of 2000AD are still working and still receive income from reprint fees.

>>who is financially benefiting,

I'm guessing the ebay seller is. ?4.99 for a CDr? Plus 50p packaging, if it's such a great service for mankind why not just give it away for free? (And how many of those does he need to sell before he's in profit? I dunno... I dunno how much his time is worth to him...)

>>the motives that prompt the behaviour - on both sides .. both sides?

I'm not sure whose motives you're talking about here? the motives of the person selling the copyrighted material or the motives of 2000AD/fans of 2000AD not wanting to see the magazines past matieral/future income sold off on ebay but some huckster?

>>I would also like to open up the question as to the other legal positions - since you brought the question up - you can't pick and choose what law is ok to break and what is not can you?

>>I refer to the unauthorised re sale of original publications with out the written explicit consent of the holders of the copyright for the publication - or something like that...

Not being a Solicitor nor a specialist on copyright I've no idea what you're talking about. But a quick check in wikipedia throws up:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exhaustion_of_rights
And:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-sale_doctrine

Both of which state that reselling a purchased copyright good is perfectly legitimate.

Saw the entire series last year thanks to wonders of BitTorrent ... but I'm watching it again - it's really pretty cool (if a little frustrating in parts).

I drew a couple for a background pic in Woo, but I'll be jiggered if I can find the original reference material. IIRC they have big ol' dragons running down their arms (in place of eagles) and a particularly silly wide brim judge helmet (and their shoulder pad was a bamboo thing in the style of the normal judge).

Sorry can't be of more use.

To be fair: it's a 15year image. Have a look at what Adam Hughes has done recently ('look on my works ye mighty and this pair')

Cheers for whoever posted that originally, I got back all of my artwork from Games Workshop (despite not being on their list of people they were returning work to).

Film & TV / V Trailer
23 July, 2005, 02:18:42 PM
Wow. While the script reviews haven't been great (though, let's face it everyone wants this to be *exactly* like the comic) the trailer looks incredible - I re-read V the other night and it's just so cool to see so many of those scenes recreated on screen. Really looking forward to this now.

General / Fantasy Tharg...
17 July, 2005, 03:39:05 AM
I've been thinking about this for a little while...

One of the first games I ever played on a computer was a little Lemonade business game (this was in the days of text only gaming) you bought and sold lemonade and watched your day by day trading to see how you did against other players doing the same and I'm thinking it'd be fun to so something similair except ... you're Zharg, the editor of the Universe's Greatest Comic '2001AD' and you've a set budget (in galactic groats) with which to found your pool of creator robots. Some of the robots cost more than others ( new robots are on the cheap with artists costing 3Gg per page - old reliable workstation art robots who've been working for years can cost up to 12Gg per page BUT they're more likely to produce a hit and, consequently, sales may go up).

The game would take place over a single year but be careful! While some of the old hands can guarantee a hit you may run out of Gg by the halfway mark - or, you may knacker one of them and suddenly find a strip unfinished.

If your first year does well ... more budget! if it tanks ... oh oh, off to the old editors knacker yard with you...

Don't forget to foster new talent to keep costs low ... but be careful, a surprise hit could send your new talent off to the States.

And don't think of using all the best for everything cus monies tight ... even for a fantasy Tharg...

That's the basics I've thought out so far, any more for any more...?
