QuoteBut did anyone catch the pop. culture reference in Ampney this week, I wonder? Not seen anyone mention it so far...

It's from 1951, Dark Jimbo, and so I don't think many of the readers would get it straight away...

I'm afraid it passed me by; I had to look it up. But there was another pop culture reference not in such tiny letters nor obscured by the title.

...it should be noted that a Javelin not only does not have a large back blast, its soft launch means it can be fired from within buildings quite safely = research fail. /nerd.

It's hours since I read it, and I don't have my copy to hand, but I thought the reason they had to fire the missile outdoors was in order to be mobile to avoid the tank's automated targetting system - in the 'blockhouse' they'd have been a sitting duck.

Good Prog. I really liked most of it.

Interesting discussion, too.

I had to double check because it wasn't really my intention to get into a huge abortion debate...

And secondly, I've never heard a pro-lifer of any definition claim abortions would no longer happen if they were made illegal.

No, I don't want to get into an abortion debate either. However, it seems self-evident that campaigners who want abortion to be made illegal want it to be made illegal because they believe that will result in fewer abortions, not because they want abortions to be nastier, unregulated, unofficial and possibly carried out by amateurs.

P.S. - I think it's the haphazard, devil-may-care use of the word 'prevent' in that slogan that makes it so stupid.

P.P.S. - and the use of the phrase 'outlawing guns,' seeing as I don't know of anyone, anywhere, currently advocating such a move.

I did stick my head in for a look but things kept going wrong and then I forgot about it because I was working and then I fell asleep and didn't think about it again until 2.30am. I'll try again next week.

After observing someone combining the issue of abortion and gun control I think it's finally time Facebook banned political updates via the sharing of crappy fan page pics.

I presume they were making the perfectly reasonable point that 'pro-life' actually means anti-abortion, which is a much narrower concern than 'pro-life' makes it sound, and life isn't really very important to a lot of U.S. political organizations and activists who espouse a world view which includes being anti-abortion.

That said, just sharing a vitriolic or satirical caption put together by somebody else doesn't really say much for one's own understanding of the issues.

not shagging men or not shagging women

Funny!  :D

QuoteI just feel the way the story broke in the papers was a rather depressing mix of sensationalist hyperbole and schoolboy sniggering, and drew attention away from some of the strips more impressive achievements over the last year or so.

I'm sympathetic to this view. It is regrettable that some of the media seem to have run with the angle "2000ad fans in uproar over gay Dredd strip - they're all homophobic."

Because I'm retaking A-level English after 23 years, I'm currently reading

* 'Journey's End' by C. J. Sheriff,
* Complete Poems by Keith Douglas
* 'King Lear' (which I hate! - I once sat through a very tedious performance of it), and
* 'Oedipus Rex' by Sophocles.

There were seven other texts before Christmas and there's The Wife of Bath's Tale and Prologue to come.

In terms of sexuality still being a problem for some in Mega City One, recent real-world events suggest such issues tend to be quite cyclical in nature anyway

As an aside, last time I recall the subject being touched on in a Judge Dredd story was in one a year or two back where a couple of petty criminal juves stumbled upon a lost or stolen artefact which fried their brains. They were investigating the object in one juve's room in the hab he shares with his mother.

Mother: "You're not having sex in there, are you??"

Juve: "No, ma, we're not having sex..."

I thought that was some pretty richly comic dialogue.

If there are Cit's dressed as Judges then there is need to bust the club. Follow up investigations on who is supplying etc.

I would say the latter was unnecessary. How many dead judges were there just lying around on the street during the unrest? I would say scavenging is the most likely line of supply for authentic judge uniforms and accessories (badges and helmets). Added to which, facsimile uniforms are pretty easily run off at home. We're already seeing 3D printers in the real world. It's not a huge stretch to imagine that fabric would be a cinch to churn out in your own home with the right hobbyists' set up purchased on the high street.
