Title: Cosplay
Post by: Jared Katooie on 30 August, 2010, 12:59:57 AM
There's been a bunch of great cosplay pictures on the "underware" thread, but I figured something as important as dressing up as someone from a TV show/game deserved it's own thread. So here it is!

This thread is for the best, and worst cosplay pictures on the internet. I'll get the ball rolling with these beauties.

The best? Pffffffft.

Worst? There is this collection and it is the Wonder Woman that is the clear winner in any worst category:

Ah c'mon that Wonder Woman is fabulous, not the 'worst' of anything!  That prize belongs to one of the fat Wolverines.  That Fat Flash appears to be Ray Winstone.

Yes but the fun part is guessing who is a sad case and who is a weirdo. Roger, for example, is a weirdo. Or did you mean the cosplayers? ;)

I was going to cosplay as Spider-Man for BICS but I can't get into shape in time for it nor can I afford a costume right now. Oh well, I'll just have put the cash I didn't spend on an outfit and a gym membership into buying some lovely original art.

What a shame.  :D

Yeah I struggle with this these days. it used to be called fancy dress? My understanding is that real Cosplay involves actioning out the role of the person you're dressed up as where as must the stuff you see at conventions and the like is fancy dress?

I could be very wrong here.

"Cosplay (コスプレ, kosupure?), short for "costume roleplay",[1] is a type of performance art in which participants don costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea. Characters are often[citation needed] drawn from popular fiction in Japan. Favorite sources include manga, anime, tokusatsu, comic books, graphic novels, video games, hentai and fantasy movies. Role play includes portrayals of J-pop and J-rock stars, Taiwanese puppet characters, science fiction characters, characters from musical stories, classic novels, and entertainment software. Any entity from the real or virtual world that lends itself to dramatic interpretation may be taken up as a subject. Inanimate objects are given anthropomorphic forms and it is not unusual to see genders switched, with women playing male roles and vice versa.

Cosplayers often interact to create a subculture centered around role play. A broader use of the term cosplay applies it to any costumed role play in venues apart from the stage, regardless of the cultural context."

Gloves, boots and belt pouches from the Galleries of Justice uniform as made for DreddCon:1. These are the last bits I need to upgrade, especially since the belt pouches are sewn shut.

The shoulder pads are fibreglass. Not heavy enough to be uncomfortable...much less than a suit of chain main. My Velcro attachment system needs some work, so I had to keep checking on them while I was dancing, and not be too energetic. Visibility was okay until the visor misted up, and it was of course really hot -- especially since I was wearing an SD beanie hat under the helmet to keep it in place.

I made my Strontium Dog helmet fit properly by removing the adjustable head grip from inside a construction hard hat and wedging that into it. It wasn't especially hot to wear, but my ears were very squashed inside it. After a couple of hours I was having to take it off every 20 minutes or so to give my squashed ears a chance to recover.

I did think of trying to modify a Dredd badge to change the name to CARTER, WAKE, TERMIGHT, GOTH or INTRUSION but decided I couldn't make a change that would look high enough quality. That's why I want to produce Psi badges. Then I wouldn't have to keep the helmet on the whole time.

'Last of the few'...or...'Papa Smurf'...

Real Troopers do it themselves, now it's your turn soldier:

QuoteA man who turned blue after self-medicating for a skin condition says his hue is lightening.
Paul Karason, 58, has the strange Papa Smurf look as a side effect of using a silver compound which he used more than a decade ago to treat a bad case of dermatitis on his face.
But he told NBC's Today Show that his skin is lightening because he is now using the self-administered doses of colloidal silver less.

Lightening up: Paul Karson's skin turned blue after he used self-administered doses of colloidal silver to treat a case of dermatitis, but he rarely uses it now
'I'm in a place right now where it's very difficult for me to make my own, and my resources are limited and it's very expensive,' he explained to host Matt Lauer, a year after first appearing on the programme.
Colloidal silver is a suspension of silver in a liquid base - in this case, distilled water.
Silver has antibacterial properties and has been used to fight infection for thousands of years.
But it went out of use when penicillin, which is far more effective, was developed.

Karson seen, left, before he began using the medication more than a decade ago and, right, on the U.S. Today Show
It continued to be used in some over-the-counter medicines until 1999, when the FDA banned it because it causes argyria, which is a result of the silver reacting with light the same way it does in photography.
The silver collects in the skin and other organs and does not dissipate, meaning Karason will be blue for life.
Karson also revealed he has recently broke off his relationship with partner Jackie Northrup during his interview today, who he was engaged to when he last appeared on the U.S. show.
He said: '[My skin] has lightened up, it is not major but it is lightening up. I am actually going to try green.'

So I've decided on my cosplay for next years Pittsburgh ComiCon. What does a fan of Star Wars and Captain America do. What happens when the Star Spangled Avenger crosses to the Dark Side. Darth America is born.

Leonard Carson and three coworkers banded together to make themselves custom carbon fiber Star Wars stormtrooper uniforms. They built the uniforms in their free time, taking advantage of the resources available at their workplace, San Diego Composites, a manufacturer of missile components and other aerospace technologies.

You know when you think "I wonder if anyone has done that character in cosplay?" Then have to look it up:

[edit: Hmmm not working, try this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sselden13/968704903/ ]

Turns out there are lots of them, although just tying a toy machine gun to your leg isn't trying:

There is even a guide for non-amputees from the lady in the photo:

So long as the costume caters to somebody's bizarre fetish.

I do live roleplay and at one event someone died in a set piece (an NPC character offed by the 'big bad').  This was someone I'd LARPed with for 2-3 years.

We found her laying on the ground with her jaw ripped off and a hole in her forehead.  It was so realisticly done it turned a couple of people's stomachs.  How she managed to lay unblinking for so long amazed me too.  Excellent way out for an established NPC.

There's something a bit sad about that Ernie Hudson picture really. I guess its the same with a lot of these actors who are really only famous for one role that happened a long time ago. I don't go to sci-fi/movie conventions for this reason. I'd just feel so bad for all these guys desperately hanging on to fame by their fingernails.

As for cosplay, I'm off to Japan for at least six months next month and I intend to catch as many cosplay events as I can (or maybe just one). Last time I went to one I was too embarrassed to go up and ask any of the cosplay girls to pose for a photo with me but this time, fuck it, I don't care. Unemployment is having a funny effect on me that way, I find myself striking up conversations with random strangers who I never would have made eye contact with before.

Photographs will be forthcoming!

Ah, I reckon Ernie's done better than most, a good role in Oz and a run in Law & Order, and loads of other TV work - think I even saw him on Desperate Housewives for a spell.

Best of luck in Japan when you go Dirk, keep the Cosplay thread well stocked please!

Wasn't that Deadlock outfit by someone on here? I'm sure I remember the pictures from ages ago.

The costume would have worked better if the lady in question had invested in a nice corrset... something that would have  accentuated her assets by pushing the, up and out a bit more.

It's okay, being photographed is part of the the whole cosplay thing.

Remember to keep an eye out for free-range cosplayers too. Harajuku is a good spot for 'em apparently.

There is a recurrent theme developing in my posts...  I keep saying 'I don't like *insert word here*'

I don't like 'Cosplay'...  Whatever is wrong with 'Fancy Dress'? It was called 'Fancy Dress' or 'Dressing Up' for decades, then up pops a term that isn't required.

Not only that some people describe 'LARP' as 'Cosplay'.  Which kind of blurs the difference between two (or more) very different hobbies/pastimes.

/rant

I can put up with cosplay for 'people going to a covention in fancy dress'... I guess... *shrugs grumpily*

Yeah it's almost as annoying as people referring to 'LRP' as 'LARP' but then both LARP and Cosplay are not British terms. I'm pretty sure Cosplay outside of the confines of a convention is just dressing up mind.

I like the way ero-cosplay seems to largely involve showing off your undies, God knows what would happen over here if there was an erotic cosplay event, but I suspect some of you would be able to report back if it did happen.

Clicking on from that, I see some of the big cons have implemented strict dress guidelines:

QuoteThe revisions are severe, but the biggest change is this:

"For the chest, the standard is for no more than a third of the skin to be uncovered, and for no underwear to be visible (for women only)."

So the chaps can still show off their undies?

QuoteImpersonators

Due to the current economic, social and cultural crisis in The United States of America today, I have decided to do a photographic project consisting of a series of studio portraits of superhero and celebrity impersonators that live and work in the city of Los Angeles. Most of them unemployed Americans, they decided to suit up with their costumes and hit the streets, animate parties and events in efforts to make ends meet. Making them pose in their costumes against a colorful backdrop, I ask them to manifest feelings of genuine sadness – honest emotions that are a consequence of our current times. The result is a somber, striking visual image that contradicts the iconic nature of strength and moral righteousness typical in American superhero and celebrity imagery. Creating the illusion that Superman does exist – that he too was fallible and affected by America's downturn.

I went on to read this.........Bat Girl really really look's like she's about to give up on life.

Indiana Jones look's like he's constipated on the loo whilst also trying to knock one out lol

I only went Sunday and it was primarily for something else. Someone did mention that he saw 4 Judges together on Saturday dressed exactly the same as me. I tried to correct him by saying I know of no Planet Replica Judges coming to the event apart from me but he wouldn't have it. So I killed him :D

I actually though that was an iron man costume for a bit. Silly me!

That colour scheme actually works pretty well though. Not that I'm suggesting the Cybermen actually adopt it in the show. (Not that they would, it's obviously a fan Iron Man homage.) Keep 'em cold chrome...

Don't panic- it is 'shopped. Those are the new cybermen from the upcoming series of Dr Who, to be broadcast next year (second half of the series that ended recently, not the start of the 50th). As you can see, they're subtly different from the ones we've had for a few years now- and on my opinion, even more rubbish. But at least they're trying.

You'd think the expense of travelling, the clothes; many having to be hand crafted, hotels etc would put people off Cosplay but not a bit of it. I guess if your into a scene or a hobby your hooked. Must be expensive though.

Yep, that's the Galactic Knights costume group. I'm a member. They used to be very Star Wars heavy, but have been branching out in recent years with other Sci-Fi, fantasy and comic characters.

They're got five Planet Replica judges in their membership.

It's basically the same as cosplay, but you're costume must to be finished to specific standards of accuracy and quality, before it's 'cleared'. You then get invited to events to entertain the public.

Depends how much she really knows about comics, and whether she'll put out for the geeks. Fanboy outrage at lack of knowledge on the first point is directly proportional to reluctance to oblige on the second.

There was a guy who donned the book polish to play Duane Dibbley in the Red Dwarf: Dimension Jump convention last year. (I didn't attend that one but I heard about it and saw pictures.) Quite amusing considering both Danny John Jules (who played the character and Cat) and Craig Charles attended as well.

He got away with it (he's a nice chap actually. Intending to be authentic rather than actually racist although I think that a major misjudgement. It looked like actual black boot polish. Not just brown tan colouring which at least would fit) but it raised a few eyebrows.

I'll admit I found the whole thing very funny. (Not because I'm a great big racist. Just... well.

I don't consider black face to be racist in it's current sense to be honest. Back when the black's where an under class and BF was used to mock them comically, that was racist, but these day's I barely see it out side cosplay, where as you said Mardroid, it often seem's more out of misgiving than malice.

My take on Geptapo Bob Harris. Then the beauty on the right is Jennifer Blaze, fetish model. (http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l195/megacitytours/jenniferblaze_zps60e46951.jpg) (http://s96.photobucket.com/user/megacitytours/media/jenniferblaze_zps60e46951.jpg.html)

the helmet you're wearing in your profile pic would've made a more authentic Gestapo Bob!

I didn't want to cover up the mohawk or hide the piercings. I really thought Bob needed updating.

The Emperor would/will be proud in about 30-38,000 years.Unless of course he's here now maybe even on these boards...

The Emperor of Mankind lives among us already:

On subject of Mohawks....I took a few of my disposables to each side of my head nearly a month ago now, and have been shaving what was left of my hair, but only really round the sides.

I left the hair on top, so it's less of Mohawk and it's only noticeable when I comb my hair back and the lack of hair around the sides and part of the way around the back of my head leaving the hair intact.

I haven't tried to spike it or anything like that. My hair is comparably thinner up top than it was at the sides and that's my reason for doing it. My hair now looks a lot less like the same shape as Darth-Vaders helmet.

It's more like Ragnar Lothbrok's hair cut (It's more like  drastically shaved mullet, which is just like the hair cut I gave myself when I was fifteen years old and in year eleven at this new school I had just started going to. Back then, my hair was just not growing enough up top, and it was more noticeable. I did this with a thinning comb (A comb combined with a large razor blade!) was shocked at how much of my hair it took off when I ran it above one of ears. I then did the other side to keep it even looking. I wore a large cap to hide the damage from my parents until my hair grew back in. It was when I was asked to remove my cap during dinner on the third day after I did this and had the shit blown out of me. While at school nobody made fun of my unorthodox haircut to my face at least. I guess they were all just being polite or some of them thought I was trying to revive the punk movement! (Wait a minute, this was in early 1987, so I not sure how far off my small contribution to the punk-revival I was!) I think some teachers complemented me as well, but asked me not to not od it again if I didn't want to be suspended or expelled. My cousin who was just being a smart-arse never believed my clam that I sneezed while I was shaving my face  and that was how I lost all that hair above my ears. (Lucky, didn't lose a ear!)  I then said, I only shaved the other side to keep it even...which was true! Yet, I've always been kind of annoyed that my cousin new better and wouldn't support my excuse. I think my hair grew back enough in less than two months, but there were number of guys that I went to school with that that had closely cropped or almost completely shaven hair. Yet, what I da was unique in that it was short at the front and on top and long at the back and now completely shaven at the sides. I think this hair cut became more popular later on as I've see used later on during the 90's. Heaps of boys and some girls my age would get their hair shaved at the sides, but leave their hair long on top and sometimes with a top-knot. Although I had definite mullet hair style (Short on the top and sides, but long at the back and doesn't really need to be shaved at the sides!) popularised by the local Bevan/Bogans/Westies (Car enthuseists that were known to drive Torana's and do laps in the nearest town. If they got out of their cars, you would notice their most common style of dress is a flannelette shirt with a criss-crossed or checkered pattern (Often a tartan!), dark track pants and Ugg-boots with the furred lining. I would just wear the same type of shirt with my stoned-washed jeans like the Pseudo-Bevan I really was! I never had the boots, or a licence to drive at the time.) I was in the habit of cutting my own hair a lot and messing it up, leaving noticeable holes that revealed my naked skull, but never so badly as I had so with my side hair!)

With a Derek Small's styled moustache combined with chops. Similar to Wolverine's!

I've been replaying the razor each week, shaving a little more off the top, but only around the sides to make it more extreme each time I do it. Yet, I should stop doing this and let it grow back, but because it really looks like I'm wearing badly fitting topae when ever the hair isn't brushed or combed back. If I combed it straight down the sides, parting my hair in the middle, the effect is hardly noticeable, except that my hair has temporarily lost it's triangular helmet shape.

I'd take few pictures and show you all, but my camera is broken.

As for Cosplay,  I have this medieval looking lace-up grey shirt  and some very loose grey pants that are really meant for fishing and a very sturdy tightly woven grey leather belt (That looks a lot like Gandalf's!) arriving within the next fortnight. The shirt and pants are not supposed to arrive until the thirteenth and the third installment of the Hobbit will finish it's run a day before at one of the Cineplex's at popular shopping centre closet the nearest city. (Brisbane!)

Such a shame, but I have spent another thirty dollars buy myself light grey zip-up, hoodie and these loose fitting dark grey pants, but they may have to do if I want see the film again in costume.

BTW... the grey robes I now have need alteration after trying them on once. I hem keeps dragging along the ground, my hands are lost in the long wide sleeves and hood falls over my head when pull over it. Despite claims from the source that it's dark-gray colour. It does look more black, than the light grey I needed and I have trying to find out how to fix this. It's made from Polyestor-Viscose or Rayon that is made from processed plant-fibers that is kind of flammable. After looking this up on the internet where I learnt that it might fade and shrink even if I soak the robes in a tub of hot water over night and leave it to dry in the sun the next day. I did this and it looks much the same. I think the desired effect might happen after weeks/months of exposure. to sunlight, but I don't have that much time.

ADVICE PLEASE

My article on the Uniform of Judge Drone (https://judgetutorsemple.wordpress.com/2015/09/12/judge-dredd-cosplay-builds-judge-drone/) is on my blog.

Here's a commission that Kevin had done by Ryan Brown.
