Title: 2000ad Graphic novels I've purchased this year (I've gone a bit nuts)
Post by: marko10174 on 13 March, 2017, 10:09:26 PM

I briefly read 2000ad as a kid. I found my old progs in my mothers attic (which I was thrilled about) they were progs 919 to 965, that covered late December 94 to November 95. They also contained the classic 2000ad issue of September 95 which featured Judge Dredd "America" that story has always stayed with me, it left such an impact on me as a thirteen year old. Anyway, the affair ended in 95 and I have only just rediscovered 2000ad at the beginning of this year. So I am buying each new issue, and have purchased quite a few of the older progs to get me up to date with some of the newer stories. But I wanted to familiarise myself with some of the 2000ad history by buying some of the graphic novels people have recommended on here. Well... it's caused a bit of an addiction. I can't believe how much money I have spent in these last few months but it has been worth it. So here is a list of all the GN's I have so far purchased.

Button man- The first three novels.
Necronauts.
Indigo Prime- killing time.
Stone Island.
Strontium dog- files 1 to 4 and the final sollution.
Rogue trooper- first volume.
Mega city under cover- volume 1
Slaine- warriors dawn
Skizz
Durham Red- Scantos trilogy
Stickle back- first to novels
Kingdom- first two novels
Leviathan- (waiting for it to arrive in post)
Rain dogs
Judge Dredd- case files 1,2,3,5,6,8,14 and GN's Total war, Origins, Democracy now, day of chaos trilogy.
Young Death

Er... I'll probably be getting more in the next few weeks.

Someone on this site recommended Leviathan to me when I got back in to 2000AD. Its a great read and you should enjoy it.

It'll probably be worth your while looking out for the new Hachette partwork collection.

Great list you got there marko! I have acquired a similar amount of 2000AD trades this past year as well (Case Files 1-21, Rogue volumes, 10 Stronty volumes, ABC warriors, Button man etc...). Its 40 years worth of never-ending zarjaz to catch up on!

Kingdom Aux Drift (vol.3) just came out this month so if you enjoyed the fist two you might want to get that as well (I ordered it last week). I also recommend Jaegir as a must read (I recently read and recommend ABC Warriors the Meknificent Seven and the Volgan War series if you have a few extra quid to spend this month).

If you are looking for more recommendations, everyone here has been very helpful suggesting the best of the best. Read through these two threads and you will have a good idea of what people reccomend the most:

Rogue Judge, I'm very impressed with your purchases this year, 21 JD Case files! you're nearly caught up with the full run that's out so far. I checked out the links you gave for the recommendations, they should definitely keep me going for quite a while, like you said, forty years of catching up to do, but it'll be fun. Do you have a particular favourite graphic novel? I'm up to date with kingdom, I bought the progs with the seasons that haven't been released in graphic novel format yet. I've not read the latest series yet, I'm waiting for it to end so I can read it back to back.

I wasn't blown away by stickleback, it just seemed a bit too out there for me. Can't wait to read Leviathan though, heard so many great things about it.

Hey Eamonn, that sounds quite exciting, I would like to come on your podcast and review Button man if that's ok?

Sadly a chap called Pete Wells bribed me with a steak pasty and beat you to Button Man.
You can find a complete listing of my episodes so far and the rather extensive book list of picks for future episodes here:
https://www.facebook.com/Megacitybookclub/posts/853740658088269

If you don't do Facebook I can paste the list in here.

From your list the ones that haven't been picked yet are:

Necronauts.
Stone Island.
Mega city under cover- volume 1
Slaine- warriors dawn
Skizz
Durham Red- Scantos trilogy
Kingdom- first two novels
Leviathan- (waiting for it to arrive in post)
Rain dogs
Judge Dredd- Total war, Origins, Democracy now, day of chaos trilogy.
Young Death

Fair warning though, and it sounds ridiculous I know, but I'm booked up with recordings for 2017 so this would probably be for early 2018  :o

That's quite a list Marko - I'd add a couple more Dredd GNs: The Pit (A very nuts'n'bolts police procedural with a large cast of supporting characters) and Brothers of the Blood (stories about Dredd's 'family', mainly Vienna and Rico); plus every bookshelf should hold a copy of The Complete Halo Jones!

I've been going a bit nuts myself, trying to catch up with old favourites and discover some new (to me) thrills.

Recent purchases by me include:

Meltdown Man
Glimmer Rats
Zombo Vols 1 & 2
Robusters Complete Nuts & Bolts 1
Dan Dare Vol 2
Age Of The Wolf
Strontium Dog Vols 2 & 3
Anderson PSI Division Vols 1 & 2
Blackhawk
Zenith Vols 1-4
Rogue Trooper Vol 3

I really need to catch up on my Dredds, as I'm only up to Vol 12, but there's so many other books demanding my attention..! I'm looking forward to seeing what the fuss is about regarding Zenith, and I'm also looking forward to the forthcoming Journal Of Luke Kirby - another one I missed first time round.
I want to get hold of Leviathan at some point, but I see you've got a copy of Stone Island - I love that! Proper, gruesome horror!

The Pit is also collected in Case Files 24 and 25.
I have recommended it a few time already, but it bears repeating.Tales of Telguuth, anyone?
My recent aquisition was Tales from Beyond Science.

Thanks Eamonn, sounds good. I'll have to start listening to your pod casts.

I really want to read "the pit" and especially "brothers of the blood" but it is so expensive on Amazon and ebay. Yeah Stone island was pretty gruesome, I enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to reading Leviathan tonight. I remember read Luke Kirby in 1995, I see the whole collection is coming out this year, I may have to purchase it for nostalgic purposes.

I didn't realise that the casefiles had finally caught up to the "black'n'red" series of GNs. If you're colecting those, ithen The Pit sits well within the omgoimg continuity as it's quite pivotal, but I often recommend it as a great self contained 'Dredd-as-cop' book

The man is true to his word - Marko just bought a 2000 AD book off me on eBay.

It's great to see such enthusiasm from people like you and Rogue Judge. I've been reading the prog for the last three years and slowly catching up on old stories - mainly Dredd, and mostly through a prog slog rather than collected editions.

Hope you enjoy the book, and the bonus comic I threw in from my stash ;)

Hey Echidna! was it "fiends of the eastern front" that you sold me? that's the last book I bought on ebay. I've also been buying old progs to catch up on earlier series of some of the strips. I've just bought a bunch to get the stories of "Finn" and "Skizz" two stories from my childhood. Thanks for the kind words, I am truly addicted to 2000ad now, just about to finish Strontium dog search and destroy file volume 4 and then I'll be reading the final solution tomorrow, and from there straight in to Durham Red the scarlet cantos trilogy. Thanks very much for throwing in the bonus comic as well, really appreciate it :)

Obviously the spirit of the 40th has taken a few of us...

Aside from the John Smith and Peter Milligan books, every single one of these has been bought and read in the last 14 months.

A prog slog would be a great way of reading through Dredd, and the other titles too - you wouldn't miss a thing! Do you have a good long run of the progs? I dont have any progs as of yet but would like to buy a few here and there to experience the progs as they were meant to be read.

@EDazzling - How long have you been collecting? That is a thorough collection! I see you are lucky enough to have the collection of the Complete Bad Company, this is one I have been wanting a while but it is out of print.

Echidna, thanks for the bonus mag, both strips arrived today. I've never read that JD story so it was actually a very nice treat!

Edzalling your collection is mouth watering, one day I hope to compete with you!

Rogue Judge, you've never bought any progs? saying that, I only started back up with 2000ad from prog 2011. I have my original progs from my child hood, there's about fifty of them, and I've bought about another forty back issues progs to complete some of the on going strips. You should start up a prescription buddy.

Hi Marko, I started reading 2000 AD about a year ago and have been furiously collecting/reading the traded collections since then. I don't have great access to the weekly progs where I live (in Canada) as only one comic store here carries the progs (unfortunately not the one I go to). I tried to get my hands on prog 2000 and the 40th special to no avail...so for now I am content reading the trades but do plan on grabbing progs eventually.

Hi Rogue Judge. Yeah, it's a real shame 2000ad isn't more accessible in Canada or the states (from what I've heard. Maybe we'd get more movies if it was bigger over there.

that's an impressive collection of shelves Edazzling! and it's great to see both Marko and RogueJudge catching up on all the stories in the TPBs.
I haven't really bought any graphic novels (with the exception of cherry picking mega collection volumes).
but i HAVE bought all of these in the last 6 months :)
when you want your thrill power pure, original progs are the only way to go.

Dash Decent - Thanks for the recommendation, I have used the webshop once so far (to order the Volgan War) and was very pleased with the condition of the book when it arrived and excellent customer service. I will take your advice and and buy specials/one offs etc. I still want to get my hands on prog 2000 and the 40th...

Marko - Yeah its a shame the progs are tough to get here (could be Diamonds fault not sure, but I know my comic store has a few problems with them), so I will have to go online as Dash suggests!

terryworld - Amazing collection of progs you have there! How many are you at and how far back are you planning to go? Back issues are impossible to find here too, so I may give ebay a shot one day and get some progs to read and hang on the wall.

i think i need 209 progs to get the full set and around 100 megs. then i've got the lot (minus a few annuals/specials - but i'm close with those too)
it all started when i found prog 1 on ebay last august at a decent price and grabbed it. i SWORE i would not try for a full set.... but then i found a HUGE lot going VERY cheap - was lucky i guess. been slowly picking up bulk lots since (and have 100s of spares).
i'm in Oz so there aren't as many chances as i see in the uk on ebay or the various facebook groups to pick up the originals at a good price. but patience and perserverence will get you there!
what i love about the original progs is the damn SIZE of them - i'm not so keen on the rebellion TPBs due to the reduced size. growing up in the 70s/80s, i always loved that the 2000ADs i read seemed SO much bigger than marvel/dc. it really highlights the art. and theres something unexplainable about the FEEL of the originals... the paper is SHIT... but... the ink rubbing off on your fingers and (don't think i'm a weirdo) the SMELL of the originals... it's a weird sensory thing. you just don't get that from reprints.
keep going with the discovery of thrills via TPBs rogue. but if you get a chance to grab some old school progs do it! they're especially awesome with the old "nerve centres" where tharg tells us earthlets how lucky we are :)

Some good collections posted and impressed with the amount that some posters have purchased in the last year!!
I'm a slow and Steady man with about 4/5 GNs a year as I don't have the space for the progs. I do have to agree though about the "smell" of the originals. I recently got a few special to me progs and when I read them  the 80s came flooding back :).
They're now in frames but might have to take them out for a wee sniff now and again

Terryworld - I agree that there is something special about collecting the originals. I am this way with some other American titles I collect; for example I have Uncanny X-men from issue #94 onwards (and nearly a complete Daredevil run, and others) and I really appreciate holding the book in my hands, seeing the old advertisements, reading the letters pages and Stans Soapbox etc. And as odd as it sounds, the smell does play a part in the enjoyment of the comics, I'm definitely guilty of sniffing my old books when no one is around! I'd wager that most people here would agree to this guilty pleasure...
