Title: Judge Dredd: The Cursed Earth card game
Post by: Third Estate Ned on 05 December, 2017, 09:45:08 PM
Surprised no-one's picked up on this here yet, unless I missed it. Looking forward to there being a JD game that is neither miniature-based nor RPG so I can play it with family members. The upcoming Block War card game looks like it will be a lot of fun but it's only for two players, whereas this is for more. Also, the artwork isn't pilfered from past publications, it's specially commissioned. Based on a game I've never heard of called The Lost Expedition.

Here's a couple of links:

There's lots of Dredd in the pipeline for tabletop gamers at the moment.

Well Osprey are a publishers that I know more for their various Military guides that focus on a particular subject.  IE Royal Navy Battlecruiser, Tiger Tank, IJN Aircraft Carriers etc.  The books are usually of a high quality so I expect the card game will be.

More to look forward to - 2018 looks like the year of games - the Worlds of 2000AD RPG, Block War and now Cursed Earth!

I have gone one further than just opening it and have played an actual game. I played a solo game on cadet difficulty and won! It's a very well put together game and first-play impressions are good. I will try and get the rest of the family involved in a little while.

Got mine today and completely forgot there is meant to be a pre-order bonus of the extra cards. Can't see this mentioned on the invoice nor in the box with the game. Anyone else aware if these come later or arrive with the game?

My understanding is that they would be sent separately. There are also further promos in the Meg and in a games mag this month, although those ones are purely cosmetic.

Lost my second game, but on the plus side the missus has agreed to give it a go tomorrow.

Mine have arrived too which served as a healthy reminder I need to make some time to play this!

It's a fun game but it's brutal. My partner and I have played a few co-op games and always succumb to the horrors of the Cursed Earth. We're considering tweaking the rules a little: ignoring the location card instructions and amending the psi ability a little. Added bonus: she's reading The Cursed Earth trade.

I got a copy of this. I am not a gamer but like to play a game once in a while with the kids and that.

I have a question though.
I presume you layout the perps with the same number of tokens that you layout the Judges?  I could not find this in the rules.

When I am playing in solo mode I don't know is it alright to play it so you disadvantage the perps so the Judges can catch up.  I found it a dilemma that I was cheating on myself. The perps won anyhow so I guess it makes no difference  :-)

Great game looks lovely and fun to play I really got into it once I got it set up.  Nice to have a game you can play solo too.

Ah I did a google and saw a couple of vids from the boardgamegeeks webiste.

You only use the perp characters when doing a shoot out in the advanced mode.
I learnt a couple of other things from those vids too so was worth watching.

I had another game last night, with the correct rules this time. Man it is tough to get anywhere. Before I knew it Anderson was dead from radiation and Dredd followed a turn after. Past that Giant did his best but did not survive another round on his own.

I am thinking that 3 rations is a bit slim for a team. Surely the Judges would have at least 2 rations each. And the radiation, what about their radiation capes.

I am thinking you could start with 6 rations and you have to have 2 more radiation than your health before you die due to the radiation cape :-)

What do you think is that too outrageous a change to the rules?  I don't think it will make the game crazy easy just a bit more chance.

We accidentally played Cadet mode but with advanced perp mode - you can guess how that ended up!  Though I doubt we'd have survived even without the damage we took in the shootout.

If I've played five games without winning, then I'll start off with more health / rations...

Five more games and I'm going to start with an extra protagonist!

You could pretend Mean is having an episode and sides with the law. Or make your own card I guess. Perfect opportunity for an extension pack :-)

I must admit though, not being a gamer as such, I am really enjoying this game. Easy to setup and understand and quick. Added bonus I think is the option can play with yourself ( fnar fnar ).
All round great suff.

There's a bonus promo card of Judge Hershey on the cover of TableTop Gaming this month. Great art by Dan Cornwell.

I managed to snag all the additional cards that have come out, so I've got a choice of one survival judge (Dredd), two (three?) diplomats and two psis.

Oh where can you get these additional cards from?  I got the three bonus ones for ordering early. But the extra judges where can you get those?

There's the ones on last month's Meg, plus one on Tabletop Gaming magazine (probably also last week's edition by now - though I saw loads of copies still in Orc's Nest when I was passing the other week).

Osprey Publishing - all the cards (https://ospreypublishing.com/blog/judge_dredd_cursed_earth_promos/).

I say 'Judges', more like on the side of Justice Department.  When I played, I had the choice of Judge Dredd, Giant, Hershey and Anderson, Spikes and Tweak (though settled for the ones in the basic set for my first game - not had a chance at a second game yet, maybe try the solo version).

Ordered a copy of this from Amazon that arrived today, it's got a tenner knocked off on there, so it's less than £15.00 now, looks very nice to. One question, did the promo cards of Tweak and Spike come with Megazine 405? I got it digital so I will have to pick up a physical copy to get them..  ;)

I'm at the point in my prog slog where Tweak has signed half his planet to Spikes, and Spikes thinks he's going to get rich from it.  So very sad.

Wife and I played the co-op mode for the first time last weekend. This game is *hard*. Or we're crap. Not sure, but the design is good and it looks great.

We've played one game so far and not managed to succeed.  I can't remember which 'setting' we did it on, but I think it's just a hard game (but enjoyable).

£15?! Instabuy!

Is it Meg 405?  They still have print versions available at the 2000AD shop.   Does anyone know if that will include the card if I buy the print version from their shop please?
