Due to a bit of a drokk up (we are not the guilty party btw) the water into wine act didn't happen as it should have...basically, don't get too excited about the magnets.

Well that might go some way to address concerns when this was first announced (http://www.2000adonline.com/forum/index.php/topic,27267.0.html), however, you might want to wait and see what the contents are like before jumping in, as reaction to the SFX Comics Heroes special wasn't that great:

www.2000adonline.com/forum/index.php/topic,26512.0.html

Then again if you'd spend £7.99 on some 2000AD fridge magnets then perhaps Tharg should just sell them to you direct ;)

Fudge magnet?

FUDGE magnet?

the fudge packer's equivalent to a fanny magnet? I knew a guy who spent one of his Summer holidays as a fudge packer (we were discussing summer jobs and he came from Cornwall, he also spent one summer in a Cornish pasty factory putting them in boxes), so I assume this would be what would happen on Friday nights when you go down the pub straight from work and reel in the womenfolk with your faintly caramelised/sugary scent.

Not sure if this will be the final cover but found this

From here http://www.collectorsworldstore.com/feb101184.html (http://www.collectorsworldstore.com/feb101184.html) If this is the final cover doesn't look like the magnet will be with issue 1?

Nope that's not it. I have that already as it came out a few months ago and was as far as I was concerned a rip off. That was the cover of the bag and the actual cover of the mag is that picture in the bottom right corner.
The Dredd bit was a BLOODY REPRINT with a few added words here and there.

Whoops sorry. Look like the website used the image of the previous release you mentioned.

Out of interest is this the content of the issue you got?

"Comic Book Heroes is a new quarterly magazine from the makers of SFX magazine, celebrating the best in modern comics and the finest in retro. The debut issue features a guide to Iron Man ahead of the new movie. It will also boast retrospectives on Judge Dredd: The Cursed Earth and Tintin, interviews with top industry pros like Joe Quesada and Geoff Johns, the biggest comics reviews section in the business, a 6-page preview of an upcoming book, plus columnists and free gifts."

We sent them a vast selection of classic images to use, painstakingly collected after approval was passed by Tharg himself. They somehow managed to use hardly any, and what they did get printed up...god only knows where they got those images from.

Nobody came back to us for approval which is very dissapointing; another opportunity missed.

I only bring this up, as I don't want any of you guys to go out and buy this soley for the 'zarjaz'free magnets.

As the copyright holders, can they use images you haven't sanctioned?

I know it's not worth starting a bunfight, particularly as I'm sure you want to keep SFX open to the idea of 2000AD-related articles, but would it be worth sending them a polite note to point out how much trouble you went to, and how good the images you supplied were versus the ones they used, and asking why they didn't come back for clearance?

I have just given it a quick scan as I'm going out to meet some old friends but I must admit I will be reading all this tonight. I never do that with SFX.
It has more than enough inside to keep comic fans happy. If no-one puts the contents down by the time I get back on the laptop later today I will write down all the contents myself ;)

Okay, I'm going to stick my nose out here as the rogue Trooper magnet isn't a piece that has been in 2000ad. It was on PJ's blog and was coloured By Steve Denton before being used as part of my Advertising banner for Zarjaz.

Therefore should PJ have been asked permission first?

Go easy on the magnets! Don't tear at them enthusiastically or the printed images will separate from the magnetic bit (sorry Tharg :()

If I can be picky, Jock's Dredd seems to have come out better than the Rogue Trooper and Danteprint (and not simply because it's bigger)

Nice to see it's not all Marvel and DC too, which was my main concern.

Regardless of who owns the copyright on the Hammerstein character, the copyright on that specific image resides with you unless you sign it away. I'd find out whether you're appropriately credited and make a major fuss to the editorial team if not -- bad enough that they've used it without asking permission (or paying you). If you don't even get any free promotion out of it, then they're taking the piss a bit ...

Cheers!

Looks as if someone's just googled "2000ad".

I imagine Tharg would be a bit annoyed. Of all the classic 2000ad images they could have used, they've gone with the work of a two bit small presser. What a cock-up.

Someone mentioned elsewhere that they were sent a load of selected images they just chose to ignore and pluck things from elsewhere. Which seems a very strange thing to do?

Well it's nicely produced, the articles read well and are informative. My only gripe is the massive price tag. Discounting the free gifts which are essentially the same old tat you get with any childrens comic to pusude them to buy it (with better art admitedly), are magazines usually in the £8 bracket? I can't believe I'm that out of touch. To put it in context you can get the 'Origins' graphic novel from Amazon, delivered, and have change for that price.

Gah, and why do youngsters all dress so outlandishly, and listen to music too loud. In my day ...grumble grumble

Yes, I'd also like to thank Wake for posting the correction.

Having spent a good deal of hard work, money and personal time with Steve S and Steve G over the last two years on the Minty project, its hard to imagine even basic facts on the project can be so badly recorded by those employed to write about it. The facts are all up there in black and white on our sites, and they have been ignored.

Its amazingly bad for something that, at such an early stage in its life, has produced some horrendous errors.
Surely the first edition should have been checked, double checked, and checked again.
Bad press, poor research and causing upset to the very people its supposed to be promoting?

Enough said.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing that, Wake.

However, are we to believe that -- when approached for images -- someone at the 2000AD office chose to ignore the vast library of work they know that they have commissioned and own the rights to and instead thought "I know, I'll Google 'Hammerstein' and 'Rogue Trooper' and e-mail them images off sites belonging to people who don't work for us" ...?

I will confess to being very dubious!

We sent them a vast selection of classic images to use, painstakingly collected after approval was passed by Tharg himself. They somehow managed to use hardly any, and what they did get printed up...god only knows where they got those images from.

Nobody came back to us for approval which is very dissapointing; another opportunity missed.

If I were a betting man, I would have a fiver on the old favourite "placeholder artwork slipped through" explanation making an appearance in this matter before very much longer.

Nonetheless, before making a statement like :the images were supplied ... directly by 2000D", it's usually wise to make sure that this is actually the case!

Think of it as free advertising/publicity.

Seriously there might be some mileage in this regarding copyright issues if anyone feels inclined to chase it up.I havent seen these things close up and also i am not inclined to buy this magazine because of its price and the pilfering of images but is there anything written on the magnets in small print as in copyright etc ?

I guess that you all assert your copyright on your respective websites ?

Whats more you would think that a publication like SFX would understand about copyright issues.

...and being in the design industry we all know the placeholder artwork excuse is a load of bollocks because:

Coming from the Mag industry the probable cause is that the fridge magnets were given to the Junior Designer / Freelance / A. Other department - the Ed. / Art Ed. never checked them, or if they did they never checked the provenance of each image through the library and checked the ©. It was a first issue so everyone was working up to the wire to get it right.

No excuses though esp. with artwork not belonging (meaning has been bought / commissioned from the artist by Rebellion) to 2000AD being used.

Well all the fridge magnet stuff aside I picked this up at lunch today and have to say it looks like it'll be an interesting read. There's a good mix of articles and (the quality of which I can't yet comment on) and it seems like it might be an up market stab at the much missed 'Comics International', it even has Dez Skinn in it. The only thing holding it back (assuming the articles live up to their potential) is the price tag. Even knowing full well how much it cost I still whinced when I handed over a tenner and got two coins back as change!

Oh and I'm in it too so that's nice.

Perhaps send them a full list of credits? I'm not very good on such things, so the head of Tharg has stumped me.

Fucking Hell, I just had a look at Bleeding Cool to see what was written and I couldn't believe it.
There on the bloody screen is the photo that I took for this forum, yes THIS forum. I spent seconds taking that and at least a minute uploading and posting it on this site only for some git to use it elsewhere.
I now know how all you artists feel when this happens ;)

So an article on swiping has an image swiped from you? Send for the Irony Police!

Quote from: Emperor on 17 March, 2010, 05:34:24 PMThis also made Bleeding Cool via PJ's Tweets (that doesn't sound right), I'll see if I can get Chris a mention too:

www.bleedingcool.com/2010/03/17/actually-swiped-file-pj-holden-and-sfx/

And that has now been updated to mention Chris.

Thanks for that Emp. By the end of the week I'll have a number 1 single, and be photographed in Heat, alongside Jordan. Great stuff.

I was going to say milk it for all its worth, but certain types around here might try and read too much into that (especially in connection to Jordan).

Instead I'd caution against setting your sights so low, isn't Angelina Jolie single at the moment?

Anyway this is a good opportunity to get some free publicity, fingers crossed it works out for everyone. If nothing else I assume you three are getting free copies of the magazine?

Head of tharg is by Boo Cook.
(I AM very good at these things, I used to be able to identify an artist by looking at a couple of rendered lines...)

Good call!!

I'm a big fan of the £2 coin, it feels weighty and significent... except when that and a 1p coin make up you're change from a tenner for a magazine... what broken record...

i miss pound notes.

Well read this last night... and there's the problem. While its a good read in places its nothing more than a pleasent distraction and doesn't have anything too insightful to say. Now if it wasn't for the Nemesis tease I'd defo miss the next one (after all I manage to avoid the Meg cos I can't justify the cost) ... but a nice chunky Nemesis retrospective might mean I'll give it one more try.

Is this an end to the scandal that will, for years to come, only be known as Fridgemagnetgate?

Cheers!

To be fair, PJ has been at pains to state that he is happy that SFX/Future published in good faith, honestly believing that they had the appropriate approval to do so ...

Cheers

Cock-ups happen and if PJ, Steve and Chris get a bit of free publicity out of it, well, it wasn't all bad, was it? :-)

At the price of that magazine, they should be furnished with free copies.
I looked at it in wH Smiths today, then put it down cos it was too expensive. Magnets or not.

We all know that PJ is a really nice guy but it is one hell of a stupid cock up.

What doesnt sit right with me is that images were supplied, so how did other images get used.

Somehow it all stinks.

You know how sometimes you know stuff that other people don't but you can't say anything specific, Logan?

Well, take it from me that it doesn't stink and it's probably best to let the matter go if PJ, Steve and Chris are happy to ...

GLad this has all ended well - especially for you Chris (nice one bagging us a mention for FF ;))

And now that you're properly credited, you can relax and bask in the glory of the fact that your Hammerstein was chosen, alongside work by PJ and Jock. Now that's fucking cool, if you'll pardon my french.

Yes boss.

Anyway the EIC of SFX dropped by BC and dropped this note in:

www.bleedingcool.com/forums/showthread.php?14277-Actually-Swiped-File-PJ-Holden-And-SFX-s-Comics-Heroes-(UPDATE)&p=69780#post69780

Which, I think, concludes this segment of the saga.
