Title: SEPTEMBER ART COMP - 40 YEARS OF FUTURE SHOCKS
Post by: CrazyFoxMachine on 02 September, 2017, 09:15:47 AM
Last month marked the 40th anniversary of the FIRST EVER Future Shock - !

So this month I want you to pay tribute to your favourite episode - the most astonishing twist, the most bewildering setting - there are nearly 500 of these little self-contained stories peppered throughout the progs from no. 25 right til the present day. Which one stands out for you? Which was your first? Which chilled you to the core or made you laugh the most? GET DRAWING!

As ever, Barney has your memories ON FILE: http://2000ad.org/?zone=thrill&page=profiles&Comic=2000AD&choice=future

There will be a GN straight from the nerve centre for the winner of course, and one for Tharg's Choice -  - all entries will be viewable here, on our dedicated FB page, and also on the official 2000 AD Tumblr and Twitter!

Rules for the art comp are these:

- It must fit the theme.

- You can enter as many times as you like but bear in mind it will split your vote so it may not be worth it.

- All entries have to be constructed specifically for this competition - so nothing you've done for anything else.

- You can enter either here or by directly putting it on our FB wall here: https://www.facebook.com/2000adartcomp/

YOU HAVE UNTIL SEPTEMBER THE 24th WHEN WE SHALL CUNNINGLY SUBVERT THE VOTING TROPE

So only future shocks, no time-twisters, robo-tales etc?

I'd do something Owen, but I with Thought Bubble just around the corner, there's no time really.

I've working on something so there will be at least one entry.
(If I'm the only one I'll still come last!)  ;)

I have an idea. But a question of time.

Submissions to the competitions do seem to have dwindled lately.

I'm working on something - however, it's about Future Shocks in general rather than one specific one, still acceptable?

Make your mind up - is it a Future Shock or a (question of) Time Twister?

I'd like to enter (although I'll almost certainly run out of time!) but the sheer scope of the subject is a bit bewildering. In the end, I just stuck "Tharg's Future Shocks" into a Google image search — the results are a bit of a mixed bag, but if you can't find something to inspire you in the results, I'd be surprised.

Yeah why not

I'm pretty sure it's not quite "people are too stupefied by choice to enter" lol - I think perhaps we're just naturally winding down here. Perhaps we'll make it a bit less regular in 2018!

Perhaps this could be taken as cheek by this poster here who struggles to enter, but please let that not be the case. The art comps continues to be a highlight of this forum for me.

At forum gatherings, the subject of the art comp often comes up, as does the impressive standard of entries. I can tell you for a fact it is appreciated by many forumites.

I will make an extra hard effort to get my act together and enter whatever I have, even if it exists in scribbled form on the back of a receipt (which is often as far as I get).

I'd be sad to see it diminished too, or even disappear entirely. Like SuperSurfer, it's my favourite part of the forum.

I've decided not to contribute any more myself - having won a number of times, I'm conscious of people getting irked by that, and I've apparently put some off from entering themselves, but I still want to come here and see what others are creating, I still enjoy everyone else's work and ideas. If there's some way of identifying why things have become quieter of late, let's do that and get back to the giddy heights the competitions have reached before.

Honestly, the contests are too good to say goodbye to.

My entry for the comp: "Halfway to Paradise", based on a story written by Alan Moore and drawn by John Cooper.

@Andy Lambert that's definitely been the case for me! I've had to change jobs four times this year, along with selling off all my worldly possessions so I can go and travel. I loved seeing your entries though :) please do more!

I'm going to try and commit myself to Inktober this year. I've been quietly researching some Future Shocks for inspiration so I can enter this competition as a warm up. Finding the time is difficult...

Side note: My collection of American graphic novels is proving a lot less popular than my 2000ad graphic novels on eBay :( which is annoying and eats up time, but really goes to show there's nothing better than 2000ad I guess :)

Is that the story which ends with Abelard sat on top of a giant rubic cube?

 :o Beautiful!

Is that from a Future Shock, or an original idea?
I can see writers kicking themselves for not thinking of that!

Not a published Future Shock, though I did have a whole script I submitted and got rejected (I think the cod Raymond Chandler wasn't particularly great). Each page ended with the exclamation mark 'calling card' at another crime scene. I plan to submit a better version at some point, or see if other writers would like to have a go.

Nice, I also had a Being John Malkovich style poster in mind for Dibworthy.

Post by: mightybren on 20 September, 2017, 12:02:40 PM
Thanks :) Dibworthy is probably my favourite of the Alan Moore future shocks. I've been watching a lot of Rick and Morty too, so a scientist doing crazy things and running into himself kinda appeals to me right now. It was also a good way for me to push myself and see if I can replicate the same face multiple times.

A John Malkovich style poster would have been pretty cool :) Definitely fits the surrealism of the story!

A group of Superhero's Aliens come to aid Humans out of our percieved delinquency. We immediately begin to plan their demise! Our Antihero uses a DNA virus in a gas form to murder the whole do gooding lot of 'em. MMUHAARRWW!

So the plan was to make my own Future Shock. And this is as far as I got.

There is a script to this but alas no time for the lettering. So hopefully it will make sense.

Trying to get Imgur to work. I see what you mean, Goaty.

It's uploading...
