Just found some more gossip/rumors on the forth coming Dredd movies. Apparently Billy Dee Williams has been approached to play Chief Judge Silver. Introduced in Dredd Reckoning, Silver is rumored to be killed by Death in the sequel. Cool.

Nice. He was an interesting choice for Harvey Dent in the first Batman movie and apparently would have been Two Face if Burton had made the third movie. Would prefer Bill Cosby "What we have here is a super-natural killer, with his a-hissing and his a-maiming and his..." ad nauseum, he could also have a nice chunky Cheif Judge cardigan.

Kicking 80's icons is fun but in all seriousness with that casting it shows the kind of price range they're looking at for actors. I think Ron Perlman would be a good Dredd and he's cheapish,  if not Bill Duke - remember him in Predator? Although he's probably well past it now. I don't think there is any problem casting a black Dredd at all as long as it's not Gary Coleman.

Oh well, it proves once and for all Jason Kingsley wasn't going to read my script.

Thanks for not telling me Jason:P

Aaaaaaaaaaargh!.... If anyone let's Ron Pearlmen anywhere NEAR the Judge Dredd film I'll maim everyone responsible. Think of Alien Ressurection for grud's sake (OK, he was good in The City of Lost Children, but he was also crap in Blade 2 and he's got a funny shaped head and an overly cheesy style - check the making of Alien 4 if you don't believe me.)

I know it's trivial but why Silver?????

Why not Hershey as Chief Judge?

I guess Death killing her isn't such a good idea!

Still seems odd to have Silver as CJ.

Well, to be honest I think I'd rather have cheaper better actors than huge stars.

Was Bill Duke the guy with the big gun and the moustache or am I thinking of the governer of texas?

But I was watching Conan the other day and Arnie could do a good Dredd I seriously believe.  SOme of his facial expressions were pure Dredd.  Now considering the entire budget of the two films couldn't pay for Arnie that's a bit unlikely.

Well, Dredd's not black, so I think it would be daft, why not make him a woman?  Or Blind.

If you want to go along with the whole mixed race notion from the seventies then, yeah, I don't have any real problem with that.

I just think it's dubious to change things for vague political reasons, it's just like those people who believe Jesus Christ was black, you really have to question their motives.

I also wouldn't be happy if Giant or Silver were white, it's nothing to do with any racial prefences, it's just who those characters are.  Just as I would be unhappy with any other unnecesary chnages to their characters.  From hair colur, gender or personality.

you cant have a black actor playing dredd he is white end of story, by the way jesus wasnt white either you was or arab origin

JimBob

Bill Duke was the big guy who was always shaving(in a non-porn sense). Nothing political about making him black with Dredd his race is irrelevant as he's a cypher really. I strongly disagreed with people after a black Dr Who because it would lead to almost all historically based stories having to emphasise prejudice, so theres no PC agenda here. All I really think you need is a big grizzled bloke with presence who unlike Stallone can make himself heard. I still remember sitting in the cinema hearing "I am the door." and cringing.

You can't have a black Dredd anymore than you can have a white Blade or a japanese Superman or a midget who can only speak french playing Batman. It's just stupid.

unclebacon

Thing is, do we want Dredd to be the classic, grizzled old man style, or the modern teutonic muscle man?
And who's got a big enough chin?
(Especially now Rod Hull's dead.)

Matt,

Where did you get that info?

What site?

Surprised how many people are bothered about the colour thing I never really thought it was that relevant to Dredd as in terms of background he's a man from nowhere really, no family or cultural background to affect - what passes for- his personality.
I prefer the older grizzled Dredd myself but I can see the opposit opinion, a Vin Diesel Dredd has a certain appeal but if he has to be younger he still needs a lot of presence.

"by the way jesus wasnt white either you was or arab origin"

If you read my post, I never said Jesus was white.  As far as I know he was a Jew, whatever that meant 2000 years ago racially is beyond me.

Personally I think changing Dredd's skin pigmentation, is political.  Even arguing that it has no political meaning, is political in itself.  he;s been protrayed for 25 years a swhite, when the next batman film has a black bruce wayne I'll consider it.
