QuoteTHE DAY THE LAW DIED
The legendary Cal story (once immortalised by Hitchhiker's Dirk Maggs for BBC Radio (http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=prog&page=specials&choice=radio1)) is chock full of memorable moments - the sacrifice of Fergie, the tyranny of Cal, the menace of the Kleggs, the noble Deputy Chief Judge Fish.... it goes on. Confused - ? Get thee to the Future Shop and buy yourself a digital copy for only £5!! (http://shop.2000adonline.com/products/judge_dredd_the_day_the_law_died)

may not be worth it.

YOU HAVE UNTIL THE 27TH OF APRIL! KLEGG HAI!
For the love of god stop choosing such fun topics!
Gonna try to stay away....have...real life....obligations... :'( :'( :'(
Can't wait to see the entries.
This doesn't count because I've used it before. I just wanted to be first!

I know exactly what I want to do for this comp but it requires a far better grasp of perspective than I possess! Will give it a whirl anyway. Looking forward to seeing what others come up with.
Judge Cal and the Kleggs......... How can I resist, time to shift around some illustration gigs and try to squeeze in the time to take part!
I need to get my thinking cap on, have already done Judge Grampus for one comp and the Undercity for the last one so am running out of subject matter!
Hmmmm need to dig out the case files and get re-reading PDQ!
Fergie, Giant, Robo-Dredd, Guerilla warfare, Judge against Judge, Dredd's escape from the Titan shuttle, Cursed Earth Exodus, the building of the wall, mass executions.... Cal himself! Plus all the other stuff mentioned. Loads there. :D

I was only jesting on lack of subject matter, but you have just refreshed my memory to how much source material there is to draw from for inspiration! Eager and excited to get home from work and get reading and sketching!!
The question is whether to go serious or not?

You're suggesting there's something frivolous about Judge Fish?
The finest, noblest, dampest law...thing that MC1 has ever produced!
Cal wouldn't like that.
See, it's Nicholas Clegg!
ALL HAIL DEPUTY CHIEF JUDGE FISH!
It's definitely a sign of power if he's in danger of dominating the entire competition :D
I'm sensing a very fishy month ahead....
I could do another landscape with Judge Fish. :D

A view of the meg refracted fish-eye (obviously!) through his bowl?
Go on! I dare you!
No Trout about it, Judge Fish Cod be a popular choice. In fact Ide not be surprised if he made 1st Plaice. I'm not sure what I'll do yet, I'll have to Mullet over. Definitely giving this a go though, if only for the Halibut.
I'll get my coat. :D

I won't take the

Yep these fish jokes are way off the scale! Z :-\
SKD, you've used up all the piscatorial jokes! You're a downright 'eel. How shellfish! Have you no sole?
I used up all the fish jokes in 1999.
Judge Fish's favourite album? Never Mind the Haddocks.
Sorry folks, I couldn't stop at a Zingle pun, it was a little Sailfish of me to Tarpon for so long. I do tend to Barbel on a bit.
Walleye Basslet someone else have a go, as I'm beginning to Flounder.

We'll clam up now.
Ok so here is my entry - I call it, 'Cal's Arena'!! Had a quick brush up of the story and it struck me how much Cal is like Joaquin Phoenix's character in 'Gladiator' hence the arena. There's a few faces in the crowd you may recognise.
It is my intention to ink this piece but not sure if i'll have time so i'll enter it as pencil and 'If' I do manage to ink it i'll swap em over prior to voting.
Steve, that is fantastic mate. I would definitely love to see that inked if you get the chance but the detail is amazing!! :D
:o STUNNING :o
Thanks mate, yeah I am keen to ink it myself, gonna take some time though me thinks, I defo will, just not sure it'll be before the comp ends. I'll post it on Does my Art Look Big in This once I have.....eventually. :)
Cheers CF!! :)
'Cal's Arena'!!
Quality that's 1 for my collection looking forward to the Inks
That truly is awesome - you've set a very high standard for this month's comp. Cal's Arena! Why didn't John Wagner think of it? I love those ridiculously violent arena scenes in the Spartacus series.
That is fantastic SA, a very high standard set alright
He's a politician you might have heard of.
Steve, that's fantastic!
Can you draw Cal sentencing Judge Wells to be sealed up in a giant pasty?

Certainly, although I would have to insist it was a traditional Cornish and not one of those cheap soggy pasties one finds in Greggs. :)

Steve Austin, a man barely alive. But we can rebuild him. Faster, stronger, better....
Thanks all!! DD - not in today's economic climate, by my reckoning $6000'000's in 1973 is now worth around £2.50! :D
Anyway - here's the inked version, think I am relatively happy with it although it should be said that I am not as proficient with a brush than I am with a pencil.

I cannot draw to save myself, but I do know what I like when I see it......
And that piece Mr Austin, well that is just incredible !! ...... :o
The pencils were great, but the inking on that.....Wow !!

That's prog-tastic!

Great stuff, Steven! ;)

Not a lot at the moment. Have got a few fag packet sketches simply running through some ideas I have had. Realistically though will probably not get a chance to get anything down on (digital) paper until at least next week. In all honesty it will take some doing for anyone to top Steve's effort. Inked or not as I said previously it is amazing. And I could quite easily see a coloured version of that as a Starscan type 1 pager in the prog!

I was just jesting - no pressure. :D As I might have mentioned before I can't draw to save myself and therefore have a lot of admiration for those that can. There so many possibilities with the Cal saga (robo-Dredd, Slocum being pickled, the introduction of the Kleggs etc.) that my frustration at my own lack of talent bubbles through.

No it is too late now the bar has been set......I must succeed.....pressure too great...cannot fail :-\ ;)
Joking aside I never expect to ever win any of these. As cheesy as it sounds I just enjoy the taking part and also seeing what everyone else makes of the theme. Now I am drawing again it is just nice to have a different theme and challenge to inspire me to get creative!!

Nice pencils man! Love that Dredd profile and the reflections in his helmet are spot on.
Cheers Steven :)
I don't have the artistic chops for crowd scenes or anything too fancy so pencils it is...
Is Dredd modeled on the Mars Attacks cover? Very nice!
Cumberbatch as Cal? Nice!

Because they're tasteless heathens Jayzus, that's why! However, I will have the last laugh when it inevitably takes top spot. Sadly Steve Austin has breached rule 14a, sub section b of CFM's complex compo rules that clearly state that entrants must be wearing a pretty floral hat and eating pickled onions when submitting entries.
And yup, Mr Fungus, that's the Commedians badge, well spotted sir by a true art lover. Great entry too, I trust the rules were adhered to when entering?

Only a week to go and not that many entries for our Droid of this month D'ISRAELI to choose from.... !
As usual have a half done piece which I am aiming to finish over the next few days. I am always last minute! :-[
Blinking Easter and work getting the way! ;)
RIGHT. Here is my first entry for quite some time - hope to inspire people out of my own ineptitude.
It's meant to be like... the current state of the Cal's influence... a bust in a crumbling museum abandoned after Chaos Day. SOB.

Nice!
Oddly I interpreted those scratch lines on the wall behind as movement lines. Ie. the bust is precariously punched and is about to topple...
...which also fits rather well.

Very nice allistermac. Slick :)
And I suppose you might keep Kleggs on the top shelf, with those other mags...
Very good allistermac. I like a lot, you have really captured the character! CFM also like yours especially the expression on the bust (how can an drawing of an inanimate object have a face you would like to slap!).
I am struggling at moment to get mine completed before deadline, due to other commitments. Will have to have a big push this week now. :-\

Even after all these months I am still having hells delight posting images at the correct resolution and size!! >:( :(
I find that if I resize pictures to 750 pixels wide, they seem to fit the screen comfortably for everyone.
Thanks Dash, just tried to modify, but unfortunately I missed the opportunity so you will all have to make do with super giant vision-o-rama!
It's a fantastic picture, so big is better!
Bloody brilliant. I am loving all these entries!
Lovely work amines, great expression on the Dredd bots face!!
Deputy Chief Judge Fish.

No not at all, that would be making a rod for my own back. ;) In all honesty though that is a seriously good picture you have there :-[
That's really, really nice, Archie.
Similar to, and easily as good as, Arthur Ranson's earlier prog stuff.
Just great. Love that vivid detail, especially on the badge.
Great piece as always Archie - top notch old bean!!
Thanks all. I should say that the badge was 'borrowed' from that great little Mike Carroll widget 'Badger'.
Nice resourcing Archie. I love how new art is more and more like Alchemy (a chemistry of sorts) in it's proposition and production (as is with all art , I guess...).

Nice one Hoagy, love the use of shadows and light as they break into the Grand Hall!
Thanks amines2058. As soon as I saw yours I knew there was much more than Kleggs in it. Nowt wrong with Kleggs though. Kleggs are lovely.
Cheers for the comments Hoagy but I think you may need to direct them to allied72 who did the Klegg invasion. Mine is the decapitated Robo-Dredd Head!! :-[
Thank you anyway!
No I meant you amines. Droid head Dredd? It's great.
Oh sorry bit of confusion, but thank you, much appreciated!
Whilst still reeling from the same thrill-sucker invasion that gave us Dead Meat, Trash and Mark Millar; TMO was struck by a bad case of nostalgics. In his weakened state Tharg commanded a re-visioning of The Day the Law Died told entirely from the point of view of the sensational break-out character find of 1978 - Judge Fish!
Fortunately these three panels are all that remain.
