Off Topic / Re: Mongoose hiring
11 August, 2004, 12:41:15 AM
I have written two roleplaying supplements for Mongoose Publishing(The Rookies Guide to Crazes and The Rookies Guide to Atlantis and the Black Atlantic) and have worked on a lot of the Dredd related products in one way or another. Both Alex and Matthew are nice guys to work for and I have helped out on the Mongoose stall at DreddCon for the past two years running.

$18k is a pitance I know by normal standards, but its around average for the industry (ie roleplaying), even though most writers wouldnt get out of bed for less then ?14k a year.

Still that said Mongoose are an up and coming company and are currently the fourth biggest publishers of roleplaying products in the world, and with the launch of their new miniature game range they could well be fairly high up in that industry too.

I was going to apply for this position myself, but it means relocating the entire family to Swindon and would not be cost effective. Still if your wanting a break into the industry it could be a very good way to get your foot in the door.

Red Dead Revolver goes from way to easy to rock hard in the blink of an eye if you ask me. I managed to get an excellent rating on nearly all of the first 12 levels, then reached the saloon fight and the whole thing kinda fell flat on its ass.

Graphics are quite good, but I didnt like the multi-player game as much as I hoped I would. Still its far better than Dead Mans Hand which I thought was big elasticated pants!

I am not too sure where I read it but Spielburg and Cruise are penciled in for a War of the Worlds movie to be released in late 2006.

Dredd animated would be a really great idea. Capturing the sheer size of Mega-City One can only really be achived using animation, or we could end up with a lack lustre city like in the movie, looks great but empty!

I think that Dredd would need a lot of attention on addressing his shot the bad guys policy, either by an age/time restriction, or by making the stories more moralistic. The ethics of animation always side with the good guys, showing that crime does not pay. Of course someone is going to scream Spawn here and thats perhaps the only exception to the rule.

ABC Warriors would be interesting as animation and if given a Manga style look, in much the same way as Gendy Tartakovsky did with the Clone Wars mini series, or the New Titans cartoon that is currently running on Toonami.

Strontium Dog would be great as live-action, and my money would be on Simon Pegg who also voices the character in the audio drama. Ok he isnt that muscular, but he has that look about him to pull off the character.

Chopper is without a doubt my favourite comic book character of all time and I was gutted at the end of Song of the Surfer when he was shown left for dead, and if John does kill off the character I will be very miffed, but I know that he wanted Chopper to die a long time back so you never know!

I also agree this has been the weakest Chopper story to date, though last weeks Prog was a step in the right direction and I definatly got the Chopper buzz I used to get reading the earlier stories.

Well Marlon, Grud bless him is a murderer now, or so it appears, and playing like a patsy into the hands of a bit of skirt. The noir element here is not working at all, I just hope that John has some really good twist up his sleve.

07 June, 2004, 05:37:23 PM
Hi Max,
I think that its been more or less covered in this thread, but for Omars skin tones I would simply use normal flesh tone with a small amount of either dark brown or chestnut brown mixed in as Asian flesh isnt that dark just a richer colour.

The norts uniforms look best in a grey colour scheme, while the southers are better painted in drab greens or kahkis.

As soon as I get my hands on the figures I will be writting up a full painting guide in a similar way to the one I did for the first lot of Foundry figures (link below)

Hope this helps,

The new Foundry models look really great, but to be honest I have just been sent some samples of the new Mongoose judges for a painting guide I am working on for the Gangs of Mega-City One and they look excellent, but I am just happy that more 2000AD figures are coming out these days.

My review of the last lot of Foundry figures will be up on Dredd Times at the end of the week and if the guys at Mongoose allow me to post some sneak peaks of their new figures, then who knows ;0)

Though I really love the look of the Chopper bike I never owned on as a kid as a friend of mine killed himself on one. Poor kid was going down a hill outside his home and slammed on the front brake and went through the handlebars and smacked his teeth up into his brain :(

My son wants one but I am still not sure if they are safe enough or not.

News / Babylon 5 Star Dies
26 May, 2004, 12:24:31 AM
Hi folks,
Just had this information in my mail and thought it apt to share.

Marc

STORY TAKEN FROM CNN

Richard Biggs, who played Dr. Stephen Franklin on "Babylon 5" and
also had a long run on the soap opera "Days of Our Lives," died
Saturday. He was 44, according to the actor's Web site.

A posting on a "Babylon 5" message board by J. Michael Straczynski,
the sci-fi show's creator, said the cause of death has not been
determined but that "paramedics who showed up suggested it was
either an aneurysm or a massive stroke."

Biggs, a graduate of the University of Southern California School of
Theatre, gained his first major exposure as Dr. Marcus Hunter
on "Days of Our Lives." He was on the NBC show for five years.

He also appeared on Lifetime's "Any Day Now" and "Strong Medicine."
Most recently, he played Clayton Boudreaux on the CBS soap
opera "Guiding Light."

"Babylon 5" fans and staff were shocked by his passing.

"Richard was a consummate professional, but more than that he was an
honorable, stand-up guy," Straczynski wrote in his posting. "He was,
quite simply, a terrific guy, and everyone here is just devastated
at the news."

Biggs is survived by his wife, Lori Gerber, and two sons.

Okay first off the bat, Kong is my ALL TIME FAVORITE movie and the real reason I undertook a degree in film in the first place. I have a lot of confidance in Jackson and feel that he is by far one of the worlds most underated directors and know that he will do Kong justice. That said I agree that casting Jack Black as Carl Denham may be a mistake! Black has proved his worth as a comeidan time and again with such outings as School of Rock and Shallow Hal, though his more serious roles have often had him as a stooge or baffoon (especially in The Jackel)and he has yet to deliver a serious lead performance.

The other cast members so far Adrien Broody as Jack Driscoll and Niamoi Watts are Ann Darrow are good casting, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a Rings big name such as Ian McKellan or Sean Austin making an apperance.

According to one of the posts I read recently on a Jackson web forum, he intends on re-imaginng the story of Beauty and the Beast rather than re-inventing it and the movie will be set in the late 40's and for some reason feature once again bi-planes? Of course this could be just speculation rather than anything else.

As the saying goes 'only time will tell'.

Got tonnes of 2000AD memrobillia here, mostly Dredd/Chopper related but some art from other strips such as Zenith and ABC Warriors, but my favourites are the Re-Action toys (got a full set of each opened and un-opened) and the Harop statues they are amazing.

I have also got a preview copy of the original Judge Dredd roleplaying game with Rick Priestly and Marc Gascoigns notes all over it that I picked up from somewhere. Little did I know that I would end up working on a Dredd rpg myself further down the line.

Would love to see more action figures so Jamie if your reading this do us a big favour mate ang get on the blower to MacFarlane toys ;0)
