In the good, successful way, at least according to Bleeding Cool - http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/10/28/the-star-wars-sells-out-death-note-gets-a-midtown-second-print-and-god-is-dead-gets-enhanced/ So well done to Mr Nero and all the others involved in this fantastic comic.
Excellent news and well deserved, loved issue 1 and cant wait for 2! Keep it up chaps :)
Yeah, delighted for Montynero & Mike. Issue 1 was brilliant indeed.
Thanks a lot to everyone that bought it, or told a friend, or helped in any way. We've been very lucky.
The second printing of issue 1 is out, and so is issue 2 (which reviewed even better than #1, with a lot of people cottoning on to what it's really all about: "a social analysis that exceeds the medium of comics, easily the equal of Dostoyevsky or Dickens." )
second printining of #1:

Midtown special edition reprint of #1:

Plus there's a five page guide to making your own comics in each issue: "the guide to making comics [is] actually very informative and worth the entire value of the comic" SpeakGeekyToMe. The Guide's about 17,000 words altogether, and its never being reprinted anywhere else.
Monty- are you going to have any copies with you at Thought Bubble? I'd rather put the funds into your grubby mitts and help fund however many meals you need that night...
Quotea social analysis that exceeds the medium of comics, easily the equal of Dostoyevsky or Dickens.
Now I don't have anything against Death Sentence (I read a couple of episodes in Clint and enjoyed them) but don't you think that might be laying it on a bit thick?
Yeah, bit of a bold statement that. Make me double take. I'll wait until the end before I consider it up there with the classics.
However, I can't blame you for using the quote, Monty. I've bought a vast number of music albums based on some enthusiastic words on the cover. That shit works.
I can definitely get on board with the other quote about the comic making guide being good value. Appreciate you sharing this information.
Thanks for checking it out, chaps!
I will indeed have multiple copies of DS with me, Dave, and look forward to exchanging whatever cash I have left (after I've bought Zarjaz) for the finest vittles Leeds can provide!
As for the quotes my own philosophy is not to critique in any way the reviews, good or bad. I'm basically still knocked out and very humbled that people bother to read it at all, let alone write about it. And of course I use all the best ones to entice people to give our lurid rag a look!
l'll say this though - you'll have a very different perspective on the comic by the time you finish issue 6. All is not as it seems in issue 1...
Monty, that is indeed superb news and I am looking forward to TB even more now.
The second printing hit the shelves this weekend, I think there's another 5000 available, and to mark the occassion I've done a wee writer's commentary with Bleeding Cool: http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/11/24/death-sentence-1-a-writers-commentary-by-monty-nero/
Thanks to everyone who came over to the signing tables over the weekend at Thought Bubble. It was lovely to meet so many great people. Really enjoyed it.
Cheers
Monty
I read both issue 1 and 2 last night and was suitably impressed. This is a very, very good comic. Really impressed with the entire package and very much looking forward to getting issue 3.
Very kind of you to say, Sir Bolt.
Preview of issue 3 on CBR, which ships on Dec 11th (spoilers):
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=preview&id=19337
Second print editions of #1 and #2 are in the shops now too.
Was too busy to get to a comic shop for weeks and missed out on this. Hopefully there will be a collected version.
Bless OK Comics. My Issue 3 will be ready to collect when it is out :)
Did I mention yet that Page 1 in Issue 1 is PERFECT!!??
Can you buy this digitally? Really want to get this but don't get to go to comic shops
Digital version available $3.99 - http://www.comixology.com/Death-Sentence-1-of-6/digital-comic/46820
Thanks Bat king! :D
No worries!
I bought all 3 today at my LCS. I like it so far. I wasn't very keen on the murders in the issue. It took me right out of the story.
Thanks for buying it Brian, much appreciated.
Re the murders, its one panel in 3 issues. It's supposed to be a shocking moment. Too many deaths in comics are glib, in my opinion.
Really really enjoyed issue 3. The extent of the virus is finally revealed and has opened up a huge array of possibilities for the story.
On a different note. Mr Nero will hang for the depths of disgust he has delved in this issue. Great stuff. More comics like this please.
There is a giant Death Sentence collage thing in the window of the Bristol Forbidden Planet. Sweeeet
Issue 3 was mind blowing!
My review is tardy... Will be up tonight or tomorrow.
Review of Issue 3 up - http://judgetutorsemple.wordpress.com/2013/12/17/death-sentence-issue-3-by-montynero-mike-dowling/
My review of Issue 1 was much better but the comic is just as good (most folks say better)!
http://judgetutorsemple.wordpress.com/2013/10/09/death-sentence-issue-1-by-montynero-mike-dowling-spoilers/
Things are certainly speeding towards a big revelation for next issue (5).
A lot of the new themes introduced in 4 are key to the whole thing. Good luck guessing where it ends up!
(And thanks for buying it too).
I'm not even trying to guess... Last page has me all a confoozled...
My review however is up! http://judgetutorsemple.wordpress.com/2014/01/01/death-sentence-issue-4/
Thanks, BatKing. Good to see Mike getting his props. His art from here on in is astoundingly good. Plus he found time to do Anderson too - what a talent.
(The final cover is here, http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5-LwXwKGjPg/UsRe70sUWRI/AAAAAAAAAg0/wCX1XLNQV9I/s1600/DeathSentence4_Cover_web.jpg.jpg so use that if possible, rather than the wip.)
Death Sentence #5 is out today, in shops and on comixology.
First review here - great to see Mike getting his props again. http://all-comic.com/2014/death-sentence-5/ (http://all-comic.com/2014/death-sentence-5/)
Cover is a tattoo kind of vibe, did a lot of it with pencil crayons!
Mr.Nero. I apologise for not being able to keep up with Death Sentence. A shame as the first issue was awesome. However. I see a Hardback collection is available to pre-order. Oh yes, i'll be having that when funds allow. :-D
My review of Issue 5 for anyone wanting to read a review.
HERE (http://judgetutorsemple.wordpress.com/2014/02/13/death-sentence-issue-5-by-montynero-mike-dowling-spoilers/)
The back cover says that issue #6 wont be out until april. Is that correct?
My digital copy said March 12th.
Nb fucking great stuff Monty. Really liked everything I've see from Mike Diwling anyway and this story is really interesting. It's always interesting to see sex used in an intelligent way in any story. Maybe more so in comics. Really looking forward to the big climax!
That's just a typo, Brian. It's the same date in March.
Each issue of Death Sentence has 5 pages of advice on making comics. In issue 5 we pass on all the facts & figures re print comics: costs of printing, packing and distribution; how much of a comic book's price goes on making the comic, to the publisher, retailer, distributor & creator; lots of advice on publicity, serialisations, press releases, working with publishers or going solo and dealing with shops directly. (Bolt-01 helped with that bit, he knows his onions.)
It's all here: http://www.comixology.com/Death-Sentence-5-of-6/digital-comic/69226
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GB8eRUDEHYM/Uv_S_HQrtLI/AAAAAAAAAlo/SwUg9z9hs-E/s1600/DS5+Guide+page+1.jpg)
Thanks for your support. It's appreciated.
Behold! The cover to Death Sentence #6!! Containing thirty pages of astounding Mike Dowling artwork - the best stuff he's ever done. It's got epic finale written all over it.
With this cover I just wanted to paint all the main characters together for the first time, and hint at far more of a superpowered vibe with the glowing hands and so on, without losing the sensibility that links the previous issues together. On the other covers the characters look like ordinary people, the sort of thing you'd see on the cover of the NME or something, which was the point. I took my inspiration from magazines, not comics.
Death Sentence 6 is also fairly unique among the comics on the shelves in that it gives you a clear view on the point of life by the end, which isn't bad for 3 bucks.
You can order it from any comic shop right now, like this one http://www.disposableheroes.co.uk/preorders/february-2014/preorders-for-19/02/14/other-publishers/death-sentence-6-of-6-/prod_15560.html (http://www.disposableheroes.co.uk/preorders/february-2014/preorders-for-19/02/14/other-publishers/death-sentence-6-of-6-/prod_15560.html) in the UK,
or this one https://www.tfaw.com/Comics/Companies/Titan/Profile/Death-Sentence-6-Of-6___440925 (https://www.tfaw.com/Comics/Companies/Titan/Profile/Death-Sentence-6-Of-6___440925) in the US -
or from comixology on 13th March 2014
Cheers
Cor! That looks impressive, Montynero!
Sadly I was a little late coming to the party, I think I might hold out for the TPB/ Hardcover (whichever one is published).
It looks and sounds like an exciting comic, something which I'd happily lap up. And Mike Dowling's art is must see as his work in the Meg right now is outstanding.
He's an artistic giant! His colouring and character acting in particular. Best Anderson for a dog's age, in my humble view.
Lovely stuff as ever Montynero, I too will be looking forward to this being collected.
It's been a ride Montynero!
Looking forward to issue 6.
Well my issue 5 finally arrived yesterday and I have to say it's all building up nicely to an epic finale. One slight complaint though. The "scene" on the cover appears nowhere in the actually comic!!! This is clearly misrepresenting the actual contents and should be rectified immediately (or made available as a glossy poster, one or the other I'm not fussed :P)
haha! Yeah, the cover only really makes sense after reading Issue 6. Which is, as you say, as epic as epic can be. Mike really goes to town!
Thanks for the kind words, Mabs, Cosh, Hawkmonger, Judda and Bat King.
If folk want the collected edition order it from your local comic shop if you can. You get it cheaper the earlier you order, generally, and they'll post it to you. ( Forbidden Planet International have a discount offer of £11:62 reduced from £16.99 for instance, though that won't last long: http://www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk/death-sentence-hardcover (http://www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk/death-sentence-hardcover)) Comic shops are the heartbeat of the industry and if we don't buy through them the whole industry suffers. It's out on July 8th, a 196 page hardcover, and there's thirty odd pages of brand new bonus stuff in it.
It's also available to order from any bookshop. And through Amazon of course, though there's a much smaller discount on Amazon (and they don't pay UK tax): http://www.amazon.co.uk/Death-Sentence-Monty-Nero/dp/1782760083/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1393156190&sr=8-1&keywords=death+sentence+hardcover (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Death-Sentence-Monty-Nero/dp/1782760083/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1393156190&sr=8-1&keywords=death+sentence+hardcover)
The deluxe hardback is at the printers now. Hurrah! Here's the final cover (attached)
It's 192 pages, with a directors commentary and all the rare first and second edition covers - among other things. We spent ages putting it all together, and you get a real sense of the journey of a creator owned comic as you read it. There's a foreword by the inestimable Rob Williams.
Recommended Retail Price is 16.99 in the UK, 22.99 in the USA. and 25.95 in Canada. Release date is June 18th 2014 from comic shops and July 22nd in book shops.

Pre-order inbound!
Thanks, Hawkmonger!
I got my copies of the collection this week. They look amazing. When Titan said "Deluxe Hardcover" they weren't kidding.
Definitely the best made hardback on my shelf right now.
More here! http://montycomics.blogspot.co.uk/ (http://montycomics.blogspot.co.uk/) -

That certainly is a pretty looking book!
Sexy. I also like the phrase "Vol. 1" on the spine, looking forward to Volumes 2, 3 and 4 :P
Ooh, I love the look of that. There are some damned pretty books being made these days.
Tell me about it!
Yeah, the "Vol 1" is my favourite bit too, Tombo! Really enjoying writing Vol 2 and 3 at the moment. We've got the art all done for the next issue and it looks stunning.
Late to the party but I picked up a copy of this at Glasgow Comic Con.
It's great.
Better late than never :)
Mind you the French (https://judgetutorsemple.wordpress.com/2015/02/04/death_sentence_french/) beat you to it...
Welcome to the fan club, Tips. Death Sentence is, indeed, phenomenal.
