THIS SPACE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK

Colin YNWA

I'm due a trip to my nerd shop this weekend and hope to find waiting for me: Batgirl, Frankenstein, Resurrection Man, Batman, Nightwing, Wonder Woman, Zorro Rides Again (so much better with John Synder III on art duties) and Planet of the Apes.

I didn't release that the new Rocketeer comic existed until this weekend, let alone that its out this week, so I'm debating whether to pick this up or trade wait it?

Oh and where the heck is the next Mudman?

Alright, lots of interesting stuff this week.

Ragemoor #1 by Jan Strnad & Richard Corben - Possibly the best looking comic I've read in 2012 thus far, and it's well as probably the best pure horror comic of the year as well. There's more than a passing gothic Hammer Films vibe that I found myself really liking. What a great, creepy start.

The Goon #38  by Eric Powell - If you've tried the Goon before and didn't like it, I implore you try again. Eric Powell has matured so much as a storyteller that it's impossible to tell it's the same guy that started this series so long ago. This issue is a beautiful tribute to Powell's grandmother, and it's a testament to his skills that it doesn't feel out of place among the Goon's usual cornucopia of violence.

Axe Cop Vol. 3 by Malachai Nicolle and Ethan Nicolle - Pure, unfettered imagination. That's what Axe Cop is, and Malachai's 7th birthday has done nothing to stifle that at all. Some really fun stuff here.

Prophet #23 by Brandon Graham & Simon Roy - John Prophet has come to the end of the first part of his mission...and now the real adventure starts. Graham continues an excellent Heavy Metal/2000AD sci-fi vibe that I'm really digging.

Last Of The Greats TP by Joshua Hale Fialov & Brent Peeples - Fialkov is one of my favourite new(ish) writers, but Last Of The Greats doesn't really showcase his talents the way that something like Echoes or Tumour did....there's an art to writing big superhero epics, and I'm not sure Fialkov has quite mastered it yet.

Rocketeer Adventures 2 #1 by various - I'm glad to say the quality of the first mini seems to have been sustained, and having talent like Peter David and Stan Sakai on board doesn't hurt. Good anthology.

Dominique Laveau #1 by Selwyn Hinds & Denys Cowan - I hate to say I told me so, but I told me so. This continues the recent slate of mediocre Vertigo debuts. Denys Cowan's art is as great as ever, but Selwyn Hind's poor-man's True Blood does nothing to keep my interest.

Supercrooks #1 by Mark Millar & Lenil Yu - Not a bad first issue, but there's nothing here that you couldn't find in an average Marvel superhero book these days. For all of Millar's faults, one thing he NEVER does is bore you, but unless the pace picks up quick, that's exactly what he's on track to do.

Justice League #7  by Geoff Johns, Gene Ha, and Gary Frank - An interesting issue for two reasons: 1) It's the first issue of the new Justice League that was actually good, and 2) It features the debut of the new Johns/Frank version of Shazam. Now, as someone who thinks that Jeff Smith was the only person in about 4 decades that has managed to get Captain Marvel right  I was prepared to hate this new, darker Shazam. But so far, so good. It turns out that one small twist is enough to change the character enough to make it interesting to modern audiences, and to John's credit it's a twist that I never would have thought to make. Good start.

Picked this one up purely on the strength of the visual side (not something I normally do). I got a sort of Roger Corman / AIP vibe from it, myself. Promising.

A new issue of The Goon is always a source of joy - it's my favourite US-format comic out there. The back story of Aunt Kizzie, pretty much the only decent person to have been part of The Goon's life, makes for a particularly strong and moving issue. Plus... we find out The Goon's dad's name. I wonder if
the idea of Goon being abandoned by his father is meant draw a parallel to the existence of Goon's own son, who he's never met and knows nothing of... a spot of thematic foreshadowing?
O Lucky Stevie!

Smallish week with

HELLBLAZER #289

being the only US comic this week.

However, more significantly, there was

2000 AD PROG 1768

as well as

JUDGE DREDD MEGAZINE 320

Now that's what Stevie calls comics.
"We'll send all these nasty words to Aunt Jane. Don't you think that would be fun?"

Mardroid

I went to FP London Wednesday with a friend for a bit of birthday shopping.

I got:

Issues #11 and #12 of Clint.:  (Yes I'm behind.) Not bad overall, but much as I like Kick-Ass 2 it went to an extremely nasty place. Too far Millar, too far. Part of me wants to stop reading for that, but I'll admit I'm still curious to see how it works out, and the pros in the story outweigh the cons. I avoided Rex Royd, but Jake Ellis is still good. The rest, okay.

They also had a bargain box of stuff, and I picked up:

Xtinct. - I wasn't acquained with this series at all, but the black and red cover caught my eye. (Interesting how one's eyes can pick out a 2000 AD/Meg comic just by the colour scheme.) Then I saw the recognisably D'Israeli art, and at under £2 it seemed worth a punt.

On reading it, I'll say- nice dinosaur art. Fairly light hearted stuff considering the subject matter of
mass genocide
, and amusing characters particularly the raptor character. The bit where Rex
found enlightenment, apparently growing a second brain in the process
and the ending had me going 'say wha...?' I didn't think it was very good, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Star Trek Countdown:  I've read bad reviews on this here, but I enjoyed the Star Trek film and again, being on offer for a couple of quid it seemed worth it. I'll admit, I enjoyed it, although I think they should have done more with the story.

War Machine: Iron Heart: I'm not well acquainted with the character.  I probably wouldn't gravitate to the character normally but again, £2.00, and this one being a lovely wrapped up hardback, it seemed an excellent deal.

I guess he seemed to basically be Iron Man but with big guns, but on reading, that doesn't really do the character justice.  For one thing this is a proper damaged soldier character, with a very different personality to Tony Stark, although he is damaged too in different ways.  He certainly doesn't hold back on the ultra-violence like Iron Man, and seems to be a much greyer character from a moral point of view.  I haven't finished it yet I'm enjoying it so far. Some lovely art too.

Colin YNWA

Well got my stash and have to say there wasn't a dud among them, but Planet of the Apes 12 was particularly superb. Next issue is going to be a clear jumping on point, so if anybody likes the movies and hasn't checked this title out yet I can't recommend it highly enough.

MY PULLS
2000 AD SPECIAL #1771 (Big 35th Anniversary issue! Two covers! Free Poster! Extra stories!)
2000 AD #1769 (The fact that there's no indication of 1770 is out this week is really really weird. Or more accurately the par-for-course weirdness 2000 AD's shipping schedule is)
LEGION: SECRET ORIGIN #6 (OF 6)
SPACEMAN #5 (OF 9)
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #8 Preview (My final issue of the new IDW TMNT On-Going. I gave it a chance, but it is just not doing it for me. After this I just have a copy of TMNT Micro-Series: Leonardo, then I'm done with TMNT for the time being. At least until Ultimate Collection Vol.2)
THE NEW DEADWARDIANS #1 (OF 8) Preview (New Dan Abnett series. Dan Abnett is one of my favorite comic writers. Though it is kind of funny to see him writing a US comic without Andy Lanning in tow)
WALKING DEAD #95 Preview

Evil Pants

Good week ahead.

For me:

Atomic Robo: Real Science Adventures #1 - I think that the last 2 minis haven't quite matched the promise of the short stories, so I'm looking forward to the anthology nature of this.

Bulletproof Coffin: Disinterred #3 - Probably the most purely enjoyable comic on the stands for me right now.

Daredevil #10 - Well, maybe the second most purely enjoyable comic :-)

DMZ Vol. 11 - It drives me crazy just how behind Vertigo is with their trades. The series ended 4 months ago, and yet we still have one more trade to go after this.

Gone To Amerikay HC by Derek McCulloch and Colleen Doran - Not 100% sure about this, but the creative team is strong.

Legion Of Monsters TP - This Marvel mini kind of passed under the radar, but the strength of Juan Doe's art might tempt me to pick this up.

New Deadwardians #1 - Ok Vertigo..can we try to make it one out of four?

Rachel Rising TP - A wonderfully creepy little horror series by Terry Moore that no one is buying :-)

Secret Avengers HC - I usually aren't fond of Warren Ellis' superhero work, but these tightly plotted stand alone stories kind of blew me away last year.

Shark Knife Vol. 1 & 2 - Warren Ellis was talking about this 7 years ago, and it's finally out. Got a bit of a Battling Boy vibe, which makes sense as that's not coming out any time either :-)

Spaceman #5

Torpedo Vol. 5 - Two volumes of this crime classic in less than 2 months? Crazy.

Also very excited to see the final issue of Choker finally come out. I'm trade waiting that one, but this means I won't have to wait much longer.

Maybe new issues of Fell are right around the corner?

I guess he seemed to basically be Iron Man but with big guns, but on reading, that doesn't really do the character justice.  For one thing this is a proper damaged soldier character, with a very different personality to Tony Stark, although he is damaged too in different ways.  He certainly doesn't hold back on the ultra-violence like Iron Man, and seems to be a much greyer character from a moral point of view.  I haven't finished it yet I'm enjoying it so far. Some lovely art too.

Okay, I finished The Iron Heart yesterday, and it was a really good fun read. I guess the main plot was a bit slight, basically being a set of encounters, one villain after the other, but it was a lot of fun partly because of that. And that extra power of assimilating technology thrown at him was pretty cool.  The bloke combined himself with a tank at one point!

Hee hee. I'll admit, reading this stuff, I realise I'm a big kid at heart. It wasn't just about that though, there was a strong ethical theme running through it and the main hero isn't necessarily entirely on the right side of that moral line, albeit he is perhaps becoming aware of that.

I quite liked the Ares character too. I'm not too clear whether the 'gods' in Marvel comics are literally the pagan gods of old, or other superhumans who drew godlike status due to their powers, but it's an interesting idea throwing them into a modern story. And here Ares almost acts as a kind of dark mirror to War Machine. I'm not too sure if he is there as a warning of what Rhodey may become or more to provide insight into  something that is already a part of him that he must accept, assimilate and in doing so grow into something better because of it rather than in spite of it. Perhaps both.

It's great that a seemingly simple mash-up story provides all this food for thought.

Sorry, probably one for the 'what are you reading?' thread, but as it's a comic, and I mentioned it here I thought a follow through review seemed apt.

I finally got around to reading my copy of Torpedo 1, alas long after volume 2 (and I think 3?) became hard to get hold of. I really enjoyed it, but was left wondering does it go anywhere different. I felt after the first book, beautiful art aside, I'd read all I needed to. Are the later volumes worth tracking down, do they offer anything different?

I finally got around to reading my copy of Torpedo 1, alas long after volume 2 (and I think 3?) became hard to get hold of. I really enjoyed it, but was left wondering does it go anywhere different. I felt after the first book, beautiful art aside, I'd read all I needed to. Are the later volumes worth tracking down, do they offer anything different?

Good analysis. I would say that the strip really doesn't come into it's own fully until Volume 2...but it's not like it's fundamentally different from Volume 1. I would say that if you felt as if that's all you needed, that that's probably true. The others don't really expand on the mythos or anything like that...just more stories set with the same characters.
