Title: 2000 AD Summer Special #1
Post by: Judge MANSON on 04 April, 2014, 10:48:05 AM
Hi perps!!

I have just read the long listing of the April 2014 pre-orders form from my Online Comic Shop (86th Floor - UK) AND there is a Prog listed.
Its name is: 2000 AD Summer Special #1. Its cover price is £3.50.

Do someone has an idea about this Prog???  :-*

Thanks for your answers perps. In case you do not cooperate with the authorities, interrogation sessions will be used. No safety guaranteed.  A fee of 350 Creds will be required. Report to your main block entry any informations. False informations will be punished. Have a nice day, perps.

I'd assumed it was just going to be a bumper issue of the regular prog, in the same way the year end issue is sort of like the old annuals.

Molch-R, is it planned as a regular thing..?  And if so, how does one get to contribute..?

(I suspect I know the answer to this already, but shall ask anyway...)

Fairly sure all the contributors mentioned so far have already been published in 2000AD - so it's not some open call try-out for undiscovered talent, I'm afraid.

So long as the cover features a group shot of 2000AD characters relaxing on a beach and/or having an ice cream from a Mr Whippy then everything else is just details.

Aye, it seems like the idea is to highlight a new stable of already published creators following the departure of a few writers to the US, and the apparent return to the idea of pairing relatively fresh talent with old house characters (see Guy Adams's Ulysses Sweet).

Yeah, it's a bit of a mixture, good to see Darren Douglas doing a strip, I was really impressed with that wraparound Dredd cover.

By Grud, I almost forgotten that I posted for this announcement... I musta go to the tek infirmary to check my memory chips!!

Anyway, this book will be mine!!

I hope that the future new ongoing Dredd will be released in the 2000 AD Prog size format. I have bough the Underbelly in its US size format and frankly, its unreadable. Fortunately enough that it was published into the JD Meg!!!

So, why not do a special "oversized trade" with the actual Dredd strips, shipped with the JD Meg??? That will be awesome!!

Until then, I have to keep the streets cleaned. Droids from Resyk will have hard works to do. Stay in the path of The Law. Trespass and you will be punished.

I am looking forward to the Summer Special. Not going on a holiday though, my Mum used to buy Summer Specials to read on the train to our hols. I might just go somewhere on a train...

I hadn't thought about it before, but I suppose it's possible Rebellion might have some kind of deal with IDW which means they can get their hands on that American market material for a price that would make a UK-only reprint in the Megazine, or as trade collections, possible.

We've not plans to do that - it's already being published in 2000 AD size as it'll be in the Megazine but when it's collected it'll be in US-format size. I'd disagree that it's unreadable - in fact, we received many, many compliments in Seattle last weekend about Underbelly and the decision to do it in US-format.

Gordon's reply is correct. As for whether it's regular - this would depend very much on sales. The original 'specials' were discontinued for one single reason - no-one bought them anymore.

I have them all in my collection and like all but 1 regular Prog in my collection they are the ones that were bought new at the time.

The only Prog in my collection not bought new at the time is Prog 1. I sold my Prog 1 to a work colleague and bought a better quality copy in the 1990s. I couldn't afford the one I got without selling mine, I do regret it a little as I am quite sentimental about these things. The work colleague I sold my copy to hadn't ever owned one so it was well re-homed (seriously I wouldn't have sold it to a stranger, no matter how odd that sounds).

I have all the Annuals too, though two early Judge Dredd ones were bought after the fact. In both cases I had expected to receive one for Christmas and was disappointed.

I'm unreasonably excited by the prospect of the Special.  If nothing else it indicates that confidence in their market is rising in the House of Tharg. Now all I need is to organise a Summer holiday to go with it.  Oh, and a Summer: I got a taste for those last year, great idea, should have them every year.

Come to Oz for a holiday and enjoy your Summer Special in... oh hang on... it'll be winter here.

Australian winter.  That's about the same thing as a UK summer, isn't it? : :P

But it IS cool that Rebellion's trying it out again.  And if the strips in the Special are as good as the regular quality of strips in the weekly prog, I don't see any reason why it won't be successful!

No worries. Not sure what you mean here - you'll be able to buy it from newsagents and through the webshop.

Molch- IIRC when the winter spec came out- lo those many moons ago- Tharg sent all the subs a letter with an order form on so we could avoid going into shops.

I was just wondering if that would be the case here, but if not- I'm sure the webshop will do brisk trade.

I don't believe we'll be doing so, no. There'll be ads in the Prog so everyone will have plenty of warning.

Actually this will be the 2nd Summer Special 'Supercomic' with the first being in 1977.

There has also been:

1 2000 AD Action Special - 1992
19 2000 AD Sci-Fi Specials - 1978 to 1996
7 2000 AD Winter Specials - 1988 to 2005 (the 2005 one was ten years after the 1995 one)

So fingers crossed it sells well!

So will this be available from newsagents like the regular prog or is it from comic shops only like the FCBD prog? Yesterday's Thrill-Mail seems to indicate the latter:

"Available from all good comic book stockists by using Diamond order code FEB148130 or through mail order outlets such as Forbidden Planet."

Judging by how quickly the FCBD prog went at the weekend I'd better order a copy now if it is comic shop only.

It should be available from newsagents too. Using links to online retailers always get lots of clicks on the newsletter and is more useful than saying 'in newsagents', hence why I used links to Diamond and Forbidden Planet. It will be available through the shop and the app, but it's two weeks away yet!

Ordered through my local comic shop today. That was before I saw it was gonna be available in electronic form (my way of getting the regular Prog) but that's okay. I like to get these bumper things in physical format.

Incidentally, I mentioned the lack of 2000 ad stuff in the shop to my local comic book guy. "We used to get 2000AD but nobody wanted to buy it." (They do get in the US IDW Dredd and Rogue Trooper stuff. Although I don't want to particularly buy that although I was a bit tempted by Trooper. Think I'd rather dig up the original in case file format though.)

To his credit the guy doesn't despise 2000ad stuff, though despite not being a reader. He's interested in Dredd, but he's daunted at where to start. He figured he'd go with trades which I think is a good idea. I mentioned America... (He thought that was a one shot...)

Turns out he does like Brian Bolland and Carlos Ezquerra though.

Could you tell me which shop this was? If they'e not getting our new mailshots then I can add them to the list. Cheers.

I keep forgetting to tell Jared to keep me one at OK Comics...

Maybe Molch-R can let him know? Save me a job.

I have a niggling fear I won't get this, as I don't like digital and am too lazy to go to the shops.

It will be available through the site, yes?

Personally I'm looking forward to the return of Eoin Coveney on Dredd in the new Summer Special. The last time this prodigal son was published was in the 1986 Summer Special when he was a runner up in a one-page Dredd comic competition at about the age of 15. There has to be some sort of marketing opportunity in this, Molch-R! You need to dig out that page.

I've just been to my local newsie to pick up the prog, and was told they had received a call from MENZIES (from whom they get their stock) to say that they will not be able to fulfill my preorder of the Summer Special, as they have no notification of it on their books and so will not be carrying it. The shop told me I would have to order it direct from the publisher. Droids! Please get onto this! We want these in the shops where nonscrots can see them.

That is a bit concerning and the exact opposite of what we've been told - will look into it.

I started asking for specific graphic novels last Christmas because I miss the Annual. Got Charley's war 1 out of the things I asked for, Will repeat request next year and hopefully get CW2.

I am certain someone would buy me a 2000AD annual even if it cost £25.00. My Mum probably lol :)

I really want Tharg to re-deploy the Dalton Droid to a series in the Prog.
Or at least on some covers.

Good grief! Seriously, get her doing anything - anything - and it'll be my favourite strip in the comic. Even if Dalton was drawing that Alan McKenzie story about a hacker and his ghost girlfriend, it would be the best thing in the comic all year.

It is a thing or beauty that image. I agree that Dalton would be good doing anything but personally I would love to see her take a stab at Anderson now after seeing the above.

If we'd managed to keep the cozzy zipped up and the helmet scaled down, that would be one of the definitive interpretations of Anderson.  Even still, it's a really magnificent piece of art.

Now when can I buy this rudddy thing?  I'm away on my hols (hark at me!  :D) on the 24th June, I'd better have a pristine copy tucked into my sleeping bag or there will be weeping and wailing and teething of gnashers.

Good dissection of it over on the 2000ad Tumblr here (http://2000adonline.tumblr.com/post/86372176897/preview-sci-fi-special-2014-hooray-its-back#.U3x0c_ldWSo)

Amazing to see so many unfamiliar names on writing and art :D and from a colouring perspective we've got all fresh uns there as well - some more from newish IDW colourist John Paul-Bove (who's been doing greytones in the Meg for an age) and some from small presser Kirsty Swan as well!

Also... that cover doesn't seem to be a placeholder. Hmm.

...same regular letterers though ;)

Hmmm if that is going to be the final cover then I am not sold on it. Yes it is bold but it is not doing it for me, especially when you look at the wealth of artists out there e.g. Dalton, Ronald etc..

I would much prefer a more standout cover to really entice new readers or anyone else to grab a copy (e.g. the Willsher Dredd exploding through the window from a few progs ago).
To me though that cover looks more fanzine than mainstream (apologies to whomever the artist is, it is a million times better than anything I could ever do , but I just do not feel it is suited to this release) :-[

I actually like it, and it'll definitely stand out from the regular Prog'n'Meg, but I wonder at its appeal for the casual browser/lapsed reader/non-scrot. Maybe something more like this beauty might better sync with the summer mindset, but, y'know, not so outrageously sexist:
