GUTTED to hear about Rick. He was an absolutely awesome designer. I spent every waking hour I could on my Spectrum as a kid.

Games / Hello chaps! Wanna watch me play the new God of War game?
« on: 23 April, 2018, 09:02:32 am »
'Allo you lovely lot!

I haven't been around these parts as much latey due to being kept REALLY busy with work. Thought it might be a good idea to to pop back in and mention a video I uploaded yesterday on Youtube where I play through the first half hour of the new God of War game on PS4. It's a bit neat - even if my crappy video equipment doesn't do a brilliant job of capturing it. (Audio's a bit scratchy as well at the start.)

Here be the link for anyone who's interested:
https://youtu.be/nAUb7uHl7To

I've actually gone a bit beyond some of the stuff in the video. This game is INSANE! I played through a boss fight last night that made me wonder if what I was seeing was even possible!

I don't know if I'll get a chance to play any more of it this week, let alone record any more of the game (I've just fought off a Content ID troll, Kratos style, on this video as it is) but it really is a treat!

Anyone else got a copy yet?

Film & TV / Re: Last movie watched...

I saw Shin Godzilla recently and really, really hated it.

This was a film where large parts of it where taken up with characters talking about doing things, only to then get into a long discussion about whether it was okay to do the things, then deciding to do things, then checking it was really, really okay to do the things, before going to do them. Then they would get to where they had to do the things, only to discover that while they were argung about whether to do the things, Godzilla had done the thngs they wanted to do the things to stop him from doing. And then they realised they'd taken too long to do the things.

This has been spun in reviews as a commentary on the indecisive nature of Japanese politicians. But it's not. It's just really terrible film-making.

I'm off to do things now.

If that's okay.

I’m not sure. The last cover was really quite good. I quite liked the ones before as well.

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about quality of artwork so much as quality of design. There's a big difference between the two.

Quick and entirely serious question, Davey:

Do you think Paragon could do with a fresh lick of paint? As in, an overhaul in the book design? New logo, layout for interior pages, etc.

Might be a good way to make the book a more appealing prospect for punters. I mean, we KNOW the content is quality stuff, and that it has a lot of time and care poured into it. But maybe giving it a sleeker front end and overall packaging would help 'sell it' a bit better.

Aw, man - I logged in here to check on something silly and saw your post, Jim. SO unbelievably sorry, fella. It's stuff like this that puts everything else into perspective.

I use the PS3 at the moment, and while I do like games I don't play them very often. I use it mainly for watching TV via Netflix and the like or watching DVDs/Blu-ray. I got the ps2 mainly for DVD support, and PS3 for blu-ray. *

Just something I'll lob in here:

I'm actually doing something right now to do with video games that could very well turn into full blown work of the 'it pays money' variety. During the course of it, I've been learning a lot about the foibles of optical media based game consoles.

Given how affordable DVD and Blu Ray players are now, you might want to make sure you've got one and use that in preference to chucking your movies through a console - ESPECIALLY the PS3, as those are now no longer being manufactured.

The reason I say this is because optical drives are notorious for breaking down after extended use, and Sony's are particularly difficult to replace, given that new units have to be sourced for your specific model. Even within one model line (for example, the PS3 ultra slim) there are numerous hardware revisions. Things get complicated REALLY quickly with those.

Watching movies on your PS3, or PS4, might be convenient. But if you do it a lot, you'll increase wear and tear on the laser, and that could put paid to your gaming a ways down the line. Sooner than you think, maybe.

NEW VIDEO ON DECK!

I've managed to steer my channel back into profitable territory (thanks in no small part to the support of regular viewers - including a few of you lovely peeps) so I've slowly, cautiously started up the video production machine again.

The latest update on the channel is a review of CAPTAIN EARTH, a spiritual successor of sorts to Star Driver, another giant robot show animated by the same studio, and written by the same two guys who gave us Revolutionary Girl Utena.

Here's the link. Please do shower it with likes. Because that eases my existential pain and gives me the validation a fragile snowflake like me needs to survive.

Crisis is a classic...Crash...ah dear...

I don't mind Crash. There are some perfectly valid criticisms of it out there in the interwebz, but I was entertained by it.

That said, it's been a few years since I last saw it. Might be worth seeing how it holds up to a re-watch!

Another reqüest kinda - Bubblegum Crisis/Bubblegum Crash

Your videos have a professional sheen to them. Don't be put off making videos, you have a real knack for it!

Thanks, fella!

I've not been put off rest assured. Been editing a couple of new reviews as time permitted me this week, as a matter of fact. Just waiting for a few things to sort themselves out before any of it gets shifted into my 'To Do' list proper.

Bubblegum Crisis (and Crash) have both been requested a few times before. They're in my personal stash of anime, so they could very well happen - especially as they're both short enough to get watched in a reasonable timeframe.

Aside from a Cirque du soleil stage show (true story) and a theme park that's not opened yet... no fandom, no conventions, no comics, no convention panels, no spin-off games. There's just, no yearning for it is there? -

Not to correct you, dearest chum (and by the way - belated happy returns!) but I DID find out something fairly interesting a while back.

I was tasked to write a feature about Avatar video games for a Youtube venture that now isn't happening. I was actually pretty surprised to find out how much merchandise there IS for the movie. Excluding things liek mobile games and tablet apps, I found three pretty meaty and actually pretty good games on different home console platforms. One on PS3 (which may be on PC and XBox-able as well - I didn't get as far as checking) another on the Nintendo Wii and one for the Nintendo DS. To my shock and amazement, they're all actually pretty well regarded.

Before finding out about these, I was previously under the impression that no effort had been made to merchandise Avatar in any meaningful way at all. I do take the point (and have been vocal about it before) that the movie seems to have absolutely no momentum behind it, though. It's like it came and went and there was about as much appetite for it as a plate of hors d'oeuvres at a swanky dinner do. They look bright and tasty, and they get gobbled up quickly enough... but then everyone moves on looking for something more satisfying.

Then again, any anime with WALTER FRICKIN' WHITE in the dub has to be worth a look, right?

You just sold it to me

He also crops up in Armitage III, Street Fighter II - The Movie and a few other bits and pieces.

Macross Plus really is pretty good, innit?

It's one of those weird cases of a show that did nothing for me when I first saw it. But when I popped it back in my DVD player one rainy afternoon, months later, I couldn't take my eyes off it!

Subscribed, nice, bite-sized chunks, may watch/listen to a few in my lunch hour at work next week.

Aw, cheers, dude!

Just to forewarn you, if you're going to be watching at work: while I take pains not to stray into NSFW territory with the videos, I do run my potty mouth on the videos under the 'When Are You Gonna Stop Watching Those Cartoons?!' banner.

Once the title card changes over to 'HdE Does Anime,' we're in less offensive territory, just so as you know.
