Here's our review of Judge Anderson: Rookie - "The Abyss", which reads like Die Hard in a mental asylum. Great fun, and action-packed!

I'm sure this has been covered when the books were initially released, but what do people think of the short novellas that Abaddon Books released over the past few years?

Over at Pop Culture Bandit, we've reviewed the Judge Dredd: Year One series, and have begun looking at the Judge Anderson: Rookie stories. Written by current 2000AD droids, these stories are simply spectacular and an inspired concept for a prose novel series. We'll post the latest reviews on this thread to keep you updated!

Great review, Bad City Blue! I really enjoy the pure seventies action of this collection too - I never experienced the series first time around, but I loved the retro feel throughout - it made me feel like a child of the seventies :)

I'll piggyback on your thread and throw my own review into the mix:

Just dipped my toe into the DC waters with the first volume of Supergirl - "Reign of the Cyborg Supermen". Capitalising on the status quo seen in the TV show, this series makes a pretty good go of reinventing the character for a new generation. It's nicely standalone too, not requiring too much knowledge of the DC continuity.

Ahhh, the X-Files Game! I have found memories of that one. Might have to see if I can get a copy from somewhere to replay it! Never heard of Fox Hunt, i'll have to have a google.

It's definitely worth checking out Late Shift - it's worth about the same cost to rent (or buy) a movie and it should be treated more as an interactive film than a game in its own right.

I have a soft spot for the age of full-motion video (FMV) in PC titles during the mid-nineties. Games like Black Dahlia, Phantasmagoria and 7th Guest were brilliant immersive experiences, blending cinema and videogames together. This latest title, Late Shift, from Ctrl Movie takes the idea further creating a genuine interactive movie with seven different endings that feels like a 'choose your own adventure' book. It's a really good storyline that is made even more enjoyable by the fact that you can alter events based on your choices.

I had great fun playing this with my girlfriend over the weekend, although both of us failed to get a happy ending for the main character - it's available for download on PS4, Xbox One, Steam and iTunes, and is well worth it as an alternative to the weekend movie rental!

General / 2000AD and Me: A Sci-Fi Love Story

I've written a blog post about my experiences with 2000AD - my first Prog, the various periods in my life where I drifted towards (and away) from the magazine and my current status-quo. I wanted to share it with you guys, and maybe start a conversation about your own "sci-fi love stories" with the magazine.

Bit of a surprise re: Henry Flint taking over on Dredd, and the sudden hiatus for Hope, but this was a strong Prog and that episode of Kingdom was amazing.

Our bumper end-of-year review post is now live.

Some absolutely brilliant thrills on show this time around. Ace introduction to Kingmaker, and The Order returns with a lovely 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' vibe to it.

Here's our take on the Prog:

http://www.popculturebandit.co.uk/2016/07/2000ad-prog-1990.html

Have to say that the Megazine epilogue definitely elevated the end of "Reclamation" for me - offered a nice introspective glimpse of Hershey's mindset - something that felt muted during the whole mega-epic. Not sure whether I will be continuing to read the Megazine after this, but I must admit I did like the added page count to the episodes.

Great to see Outlier back too, and that it has a finite ending. I also like how the concept has switched completely since the initial series with Carcer now under the thrall of the Hurde instead of Caul.

Here's the Pop Culture Bandit review of Prog 1989:

http://www.popculturebandit.co.uk/2016/07/2000ad-prog-1989.html

Felt a little shortchanged by the ease in which Judge Dredd and Co infiltrated the Hall of Justice - and I think the first thing Hershey should do when she's back in charge is deactivate that Null-Grav lift!

Brink remains the high point of the Prog, even with an expostion-heavy episode such as this one. Abnett and Culbard have created a real sci-fi classic, and I hope it's a "one and done" deal, rather than stretching out across numerous years.

Nice to see a Future Shock in the mix too - it was a refreshing change of pace from the ongoing stories seen at the moment and had a very Strontium Dog vibe to it.

Pop Culture Bandit Review - Prog 1986

  • Great start to the presumably final act of this Judge Dredd mega-epic with the impeccable Colin MacNeil on art duties
  • Brink continues to go from strength to strength, thanks to Abnett and Culbard's masterful storytelling
  • Grey Area is heading towards a happy ending for the characters and a return to the series' status quo
  • Both Slaine and Black Shuck are beginning to warm up, after a lukewarm start

Here's our take on this Prog:

http://www.popculturebandit.co.uk/2016/03/2000ad-prog-1974.html

Thrill of the Week: Judge Dredd

Absolutely cracking installment of the series, and while I understand the Rico/Dredd confusion, I think it's meant to be the pair of them present. I quite like the ongoing sub-plot between Brit-Cit/Emerald Isle/MC-1 and I wonder if it's going to lead to another emergency peace treaty as seen in Rob Williams' recent "Undercover Klegg" series. But without the humour element...
