About 50% of all the tracks on the first 3 or 4 albums were covers (back then nobody wrote their own material except Chuck Berry anyway).
The Beatles were one of the first bands to make albums totally free of cover versions.

Backbeat is a brilliant film by the way.
The backbeat band include REM's Mills & Nirvana/Foo's Dave Grohl (sp?)
