OK, time for this to have its own thread - lots of images of the miniatures.... here!

Looking forward to this release I like the variety of the arch villains and the Dredd on the law master looks fantastic.
The details on the fatties are brilliant.
I've really liked the range they have issued in the SD range so looking forward to the mix they will release over the year with JD.

Do we have any idea yet what's in the starter set, minis-wise?

My Google fu is weak this-morning, all I can find are pre-order sites. Can anyone please link further info on this?

Because I'm old (and have created more than a few in my time) I always go to the company's website to find info on upcoming products. This, I have found, is not how it is done. Instead, one must go to their Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pg/warlordgames/posts/) and trawl through their combative UX for nuggets, run hashtag searches on Twitter, pick through the webstores of affiliates, news pages of fan sites, and generally perform some kind of engagement-affirming scavenger hunt, all in the name of 'buzz'.

I'm not mad on the news (extracted from Facebook, which is mainly ads for Rebellion trades at the mo, so there's that) that these are resin minis, not metal like the excellent SD figs. Warlord are a solid company so I imagine they know what they are doing, but a fogey like me knows where he is with metal (and plastic): resin always seems so delicate.

I'm in the happy position of already having an unreasonably huge pile of Dredd minis, so I hope to be choosey with this range - but I would *very much* like to know what minis are in the Starter before I do any Christmas pressie pre-ordering.

Not sayin' I don't desperately need a post-Titan Grice mini or anything.  Because I do

What's the deal with resin? As an infrequent dabbler I've only ever messed up metal and plastic minis.

That's a very Ben Willsher lawmaster.
Title: Re: Warlord Dredd Game!
Post by: TordelBack on 03 October, 2019, 11:48:14 AM
Resin holds very fine detail (as the Dredd pics show!), but it's light and usually terribly brittle - almost guaranteed to break if dropped. They tend to be more expensive than either metal or plastic. They can also be quite scruffy casts if not done properly, risk of excessive flash and bubbles (you don't want to see my resin Pat Wagon from Mongoose ::) - but I doubt that will be a problem with Warlord. I only have a handful of (admittedly very lovely) resin minis from a Kickstarter and they scare me so much I haven't tried to paint even one.

However, Warlord boasts that this is a 'new' resin, so who knows.

I really like these and the in-house paint jobs are always amazing- the only thing is that they always seem too "clean" these are street judges! (and I know at the start of their shifts their uniforms will be pristine) but the same can be said about the citizens - some will be nice and clean but the streets of the big Meg are a dirty place.
Anyway you can see the road I'm going to go when I get my hands on them. 😃

I'm new to these mini figures from warlord so my question is this,  do the mini figures come already painted or or you paint them yourself?

Very much the latter, I'm afraid - there's glue involved too.  Although there are a lot of folk out there who'll paint'em first cash.

Starter is up for pre-order on Warlord's site now. Looks a bit underwhelming compared to the SD starter - but I very luch like that they include rules for using Johnny & Wolf straight away. And the deluxe version of the rulebook is gorgeous!

Yeah, it is a bit unfortunate that this is the only way to pre order all the models - it includes £50 worth of book I could live without (though does look lovely) and an extra set of the core box Gang I really have no interest in ordering, so another £20?  Reduce the price accordingly and it would come out at a more reasonable £170-180?

I saw that Warlord respnded to a request for a version without the deluxe book bytelling the person to email them - may do the same and ask for onely on set of the gang!

My thoughts are pre-order Starter from Warlord, then a Dredd/Lawmaster and Villains Pack from elsewhere, seems to get you a decent game for £100, and around 20 figures to paint. Judges and Fatties after that, I suppose.

It's a pity that the starter figures are so generic. If they'd gone with Dredd, and maybe some more memorable gang-level opponents (Gestapo Bob, Fonzo Bongo or even a cheeky not-Ma-Ma) I'do have the thing ordered already. I can see the reasoning, but still.
Title: Re: Warlord Dredd Game!
Post by: Leigh S on 19 October, 2019, 10:53:25 AM
I quite like them generic as I can use them for Stront - what I really need are some Citizens, which I could also use as bystanders in Stront to mix things up.  Looks like I am going to have to get those GW uglies repainted soon!
Title: Re: Warlord Dredd Game!
Post by: Trooper McFad on 19 October, 2019, 11:29:41 AM
It seems a very strange pre order launch to offer the rule books (both versions) separately but every other deal has the starter pack which has a rule book. As yet you can't get the individual sets from Warlord. So why would you buy the separate rule book ?
Probably still buy a pack from Warlord as I want the exclusive Dredd/Death figure and their customer service was good when there was an issue with my last order.
Title: Re: Warlord Dredd Game!
Post by: Leigh S on 19 October, 2019, 01:03:30 PM
I suppose if you have a ton of Mongoose/GW Dredd you might just want the rules and tokens, which are also separate (the Stront ones are the same, but different colour - glad to get two more colours to allow more than two player!)

Might fire off an email to them - too early in the month (and too little overtime this month!) to put in an order anyhows, sadly, and if they could offer a sub £200 deal that just gets me all the minis but no duplicates and the standard rule book ....
Title: Re: Warlord Dredd Game!
Post by: Leigh S on 19 October, 2019, 01:04:45 PM
that said, I could also paint up and ebay the duplicate gang with the standard rule book?  hmmm
Title: Re: Warlord Dredd Game!
Post by: TordelBack on 19 October, 2019, 01:30:16 PM
I do think the starter minis are very nice, I just sort-of expect Dredd in a Judge Dredd game. That it costs £25 to add him to the game seems... calculated.

Essentially I feel the SD starter was better value - a clear artistic style, proper character minis for both sides, good chunk of terrain. Anonymous mooks, paper playmats and vehicle markers... ehnnn.

Minis themselves are lovely, definitely the best ever 28mm Dredd line, the cards look lovely and I forsee spending a great deal of cash filling gaps in my roster.

Post by: Leigh S on 19 October, 2019, 02:08:17 PM
They would do well to team up with Battlesystems cardboard terrain - their Core Space game itself is very 2000AD influenced. I intend to run any Dredd games "indoors" as trying to capture the scale of MC1 outsisde is doomed to failure - that's not to say Dredd isnt going to gun his Lawmaster through some perps!

Have you seen the Colony 87 SF civilian minia, Leigh? They just finished a third KS campaign but I think the earlier figs are available retail from Gripping Beast. Quite a high proportion of aliens, but hardly out of place in MC-1.

Doing my research with other online sellers of the Warlord Dredd game you can get all the components (but not the special Hardback book) for around £175 rrp this is before their own discounts.
I think I might hold off until pre-orders are done and pick up revised "Deals" and maybe wait till I've see some reviews of the hard back before considering splashing the cash on that.

yeah, I did ponder that kickstarter, but they jsut didnt quite have the right aesthetic for eitehr Stront or Core Space minis, which are slightly more realistic/less cartoony.

The person who does a Kickstarter for Dredd/core Space type 'realistic' style civilians will mint it in

Heh, true, but I thought the blue couple on the left were in every spaceport Ezquerra ever drew!  The current Reaper Bones kickstarter is offering 20 ultra-neutral fantasy civilians for €20 and it seems very popular - shame something similar isn't there for SF.

yeah townsfolk is such a Fantasy mini staple, yet the sci-fi equivalnet i nowhere, though GW obvously sold shedloads of them when they did Dredd minis - uglies, fatties, straight up citizens....

Hydra Miniatures makes Jetsons-style civilians in their Solar City range that would fit perfectly well in MC1.
Old Glory has very rough, but relatively inexpensive, civilians in their Super System range.

Cheers KB  -those Solar City might work with a few kneepads and Block allegiance initials painted on them!

In other news, if paying over £200 was a bridge too far, deals without the delue book now available! Looks like I can pre-order all the minis for £160? So that's Mega Deal, minus the £75 deluxe book and minus the duplicate gang... sold!

Dunno where best to post this, but this seems as mini-centric a thread as we get round here.  As part of their latest Bones Kickstarter Reaper are offering the raft of the damned from Tales of the Black Freighter in one of their $25 add-on sets.unlicensed of course,  so the Magus may not even be displeased.  Less than an hour to go,  mind!

Well, they left the box on the doorstep - thank Grud the aura of justice kept any perps away!

I went balls deep on this and dear sweet Jeebus and all his Saints but it's a big heap of awesome. Interestingly there's a note explaining they ran out of resin so have produced some of the minis in metal - no complaints from me and great to see demand was so high for it. The minis I've looked at so far are up to the usual high standards from Warlord, great clean sculpts - and a nice surprise was the inclusion of the decal sheet recently given away with Wargames Illustrated which I'm really chuffed about because I couldn't find a copy near me.

But now dear friends I have an actual Oola Blint. Achievement, as they say, unlocked!

It does seem like an obvious addition to make, given the Judges' supposed role of protectors of the citizenry. You'd imagine the crossover appeal of SF Citizens could be enormous (for the SD game if nothing else!), given the difficulty of finding decent/affordable ones.

Unlike Mikey, I've gone for Just the Tip, aiming to plug holes in my ginormous Dredd minis stash, and reasoning that I've yet to play an actual game of the SD version yet.  Christmas!

Aargh!  Didn't have it delivered at all - that 'while you were out' note was for something else :(

Better news - on Friday I had a different 'while you were out' note which almost certainly is my Warlord Dredd package :)

Worse news - redelivery / pick up options mean I won't be able to get it until Monday - two days after I could have got it in the shops :(

Better news - the package I did collect today was something I bought on eBay and promptly forgot about, what with Eamonn's auctions, the Warlord stuff and taking advantage of Black Friday week offers on other stuff.  It's the collection of Wargames Foundry 2000AD figures which went completely over my head at the time! :D

Mmmm, the Foundry Warriors are nice. Mongoose did good ones too, especially Happy, but being Mongoose they  naturally only did 6: no Steelhorn/Mess, Ro-Jaws, Morrigun, Mad Ron or even Hitaki to make up the magic number. And for some reason their War Memories-version Hammerstein is absolutely enormous.

I got the full set, except for the Cauldron of Blood.  Don't ask how much it cost me, but it's more than the end-of-line sale Foundry did when they lost the licence (or whatever happened - the timing seems very close to the last JD miniatures game from Warlord to me).

p.s. The DHL website is confusing - I was expecting it to be the sort of delivery company that only delivers M-F 9-5, and hopes that people work those times and will only deliver at weekends for an additional premium (I'm looking at you, DPD*).  Anyway, long and short of it, I didn't have to wait until Monday to pick up my delivery from a local corner shop - it got delivered today - meaning I have far too many miniatures to look at right now.

* Have you heard my rant about DPD?  I'm sure I've mentioned it here before - the premium for outside-normal-working-hours delivery is only the beginning of the issues I have with them.

Last bit on Wargames Foundry, as it's a diversion from this thread - I've made a post on my prog slog blog (more so I have an editable page with a list of what miniatures there were, that I'll be able to find in future than anything else).

I dug out my copy of the rulebook from the 2013 Warlord Games Judge Dredd Miniatures Game to compare the rules - they're looking pretty different on the face of it.  What is odd is that the list of contributors is completely different - I didn't spot even one name that was the same.  I'd expect at least some of the personnel to remain in the space of six years (no doubt there's some highly political and controversial shennanigans that went on that I'm completely unaware of).

While digging out that rulebook I also picked out some of the Lawmasters from previous miniature manufacturers - the scale is on a different order than those ones.  Not sure if this is supposed to be 28mm or 35mm...

Sigh, there's nothing I enjoy more than a good old fashioned miniatures blog post. Web 2.0 was where it was at,  everything has been downhill since.

The Warlord minis game was bought complete from Mongoose,  along with their minis.  There's no overlap in creators.

So I cracked and added Arch-Villains to my list. I really like the Grice and Narcos figures, and the Bisley-style Mean is a nice counterpoint to the two-armed McMahon version from Mongoose. The Death is an improvement on the curiously chubby Mongoose one, although if there's one mini I have enough of its old Sidney.

Yep - so what that's showing is a comparison of scales of all the types of lawmaster I have.  They're all pressed up against the box so that it's easier to tell how long they are.

From left to right are:
I'd have added a few other Dredds, but they need bases.

S'right,  the Citadel Lawmasters are teeny tiny, even small by comparison with the true-28mm judges of that line. The Mongoose ones seem a better fit with the Warlord version,  helped by the fact that the former is close to the old-school design,  as opposed to Warlord's Willsher leanings.

What with my incomplete Citadel collection, my almost complete except for Cauldron of Blood Wargames Foundry miniatures, Osprey Helter Skelter and now Warlord miniatures, what I'm really hoping for next is characters that have never been miniaturised before!  My Sidney count: 3.  Mean count: 4 (two without arm, one with, can't remember which version Citadel released).  Gronk count: 4.

Picked up a bunch of what they did have mind. I picked up a mound of stuff from Foundry during their end of line sale - I've got as far as putting the ABC Warriors on their bases and that's it...

With the amount of miniatures I've received this weekend, along with the Stront ones from last year, plus all the Citadel miniatures I've had mainly unpainted for *gasp* three decades now, it's probably about time I started constructing them and painting them, eh?

So, recommendations for type of glue to use on metal (some of which has undercoat), plastic and new-fangled resin?  Also, for those who actually play - any suggestions on best type of measuring device?  I seem to remember Citadel/Games Workshop had a plastic 'rod' ruler that could fit between buildings better than a conventional ruler.  Not that I have any idea when I'll actually get to play with them.  Maybe next year's Lawless?  Guess I'll need one of those self-healing cutting mats - it'll certainly look a bit better in the background of any photos!

I use the Vallejo paint range which I find pretty good as you can squeeze a drop or 2 out at a time on your mixing palette.
I have found I've been overwhelmed with the amount of figures and lack of time (steady hands & poor eye sight) no way I could do the figures justice like you see from Lee or on the Warlord site so I have decided to go down a shades of grey (old style prog) painting scheme for my Stront figures. I use 2 /3 shades as base colours & with washes & highlights I'm pretty pleased with the results. Just to had a little colour I pick an item to do "properly" i.e the Stront badge or the eyes of Kansyr.
I'm thinking of doing the same with the Dredd stuff so I can actually start playing the game s wee bit quicker.
Good luck Sheridan it sounds as if you've got a fair few to do there

Agreed, the Gorilla Gel stuff is great on metal, but so is Loctite etc.- any basic cyanoacrylate superglue really, but never that plastic cement stuff. Just be sure to scrape off any undercoat or paint on the joints themselves, wash the parts in water with a drop of washing-up liquid, and maybe drill-and-pin heavier pieces first.

Never glued resin before, but I imagine the same stuff works.

Like the sound of the grey colour scheme McFad - I did a couple of Dredd & Death busts in a similar fashion, never thought of doing minis the same way. Hmmm...

As regards painting and building metal and resin minis, I've just used UHU super glue and it's worked fine. Think any superglue should do the trick. I'm an anachronism in that I use enamel paints (Humbrol & Revel) as that's what I'm used to, but appreciate that acrylics are probably easier in many respects. I've some clear acrylics that work well for 'glass' and to add a coloured sheen to darker colours, plus the usual washes and weathering powders to grime stuff up.

Can't wait to get my geek space ready to go - I'm buying paint (for the walls) today  :)

I'd be happy with the one I already paid extra for in their 2012 KS. And the Judge Dredd mini. And the Justice Dept weapons pack. And the Justice Dept boxset. And the hover version of the pat-wagon I asked for.

In fairness, it's my own fault, after 5 years of emails, assurances and occasional packages I just gave up. I did get a Lawmaster with Spikes Harvey Rotten, but no judge to ride it... Mongoose are a shower.

Presumably you read their last Kickstarter update (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1990654819/judge-dredd-miniatures-game-block-war/posts/2097687)?

Oof! I had no idea the kickstarter had so many problems. Partly glad I missed out - my patience is shot to hell nowadays.

But yes, a wee drill is really useful - I have a manual pin vice, but also a Dremel for bigger kits and stuff. Bonus is they can be used in various DIY projects round the house, so a justified spend to Mrs Mikey, not just 'more geek crap'. Oh, and a vice can be good to have too I find - sometimes easier to clean up stuff held securely not in your hands!

Yeah, my distaste for Mongoose started with the Lone Wolf reprint fiasco and their handling of the Dredd miniatures property finished me off, mostly when one of the many relaunchesrecycled minis I had with new ones, leaving me no room to justify the expense of buying minis I already had and wasnt a fan of again.

Rebellion brought Mongoose for a time didnt they, they let them go again?

Oh I read the update, and all the others. I just couldn't be arsed, I'd already thrown in the towel more than a year earlier. In the end I got far more minis from the KS than I could ever use, many of them really, really cool (Kenny Who?!, War Marshal Kazan, Walter), and I almost paid for my whole pledge selling off unwanted bits and doubles, so I definitely came out way ahead. It's just the constant assurances that they would fix mistakes, send replacements etc. for literal years just tired me out. A lot of good intentions, and stamina, on their part, but no sense of realism or organisation whatsoever.

ON TOPIC: Definitely get a little pin-vice (a manual drill you brace with your palm and just twiddle to turn) with a good range of drill-bit sizes, and an assortment of different sized paperclips to use as pinning rods. Takes no time, makes all the difference to assembling models. Best hobby tool I ever bought, and I think it was €6.

OK, whole lot of prepping goin' on!

First impressions, zarjaz!  I'd been a bit worried seeing some scale creep reported, probably the only thing which marred my overall impression of the stront minis - the first wave were tiny (poor Wulf and Stix most noticably).

There is some, but it appears to affect just two boxes - the block gang reinforcements and the Arch Villains - now both of these sets are metal, so thought it might be that the metals tured out bigger, but I've seen the a direct comparison of the starter set block gang in resin and metal and there is no difference - also Mean Machine is metal, but perfectly in scale.  Death, Orlok and two of the reinforcements on the other hand, are just too far out for me not to be mildly annoyed with (pictures of various size comparisons between Dredd and Stront figures are available in that Imgur post.

Overall though, a quality product and if it wasnt so darn cold, they would be undercoated by now! anyone have a portable heater I can stick in my garage for a few hours?!

Oh yeah, props to Warlord for adding in the Strontium Dog exclusive figure to the box - I was kicking myself for missing that one at the time!

Like with the stront book, there are some photos of the wave two figures and they look smashing - Citi-Def are very McMahony

Also reference made to Gerhardt, Mechanismo MK1 and robots in general....

Wave Three requests?

Citizens! (they could almost have had a build a fattie out of the ones provided.... will get a comparison with a GW  Fattie if I can.... thinking about it, it may have been an exclusive Fattie that made me drop Mongoose?)

Trapper Hag and his hounds -  a perect skirmish scenario

Juves - some younger looking gang members

Mechanismo Mark V (or is it  VI)

Those fatties look amazing unpainted, much more realistically scaled and proportioned than previous versions. And wow is that a big ol' Death! I suppose he can be different sizes depending on the body he's inhabiting? Nice sculpt, though.

However, am I seeing a mildly scary amount of mould line on Dredd?

It is indeed poor Johnny - I had pre-ordered the whole lot online at the eleventh hour for them bringing it to the show, so had a bit of a worry that they might not be able to sort it in time, but they did and threw that nice surprise in for me - didn't realise til i opened the box to check it was all there - real gents!

I'm not seeing much if any mould line thankfully- might just  be the way the photo took - this plasticy resin stuff is a bit of an odd material for me - lots of extraction/extrusion points(?) where a little stub is left on the mini, but they cut off easily enough - not sure mould lines mght be a bit of a pain.  The worst clean up seems to be on one of the day sticks which had a connecting stem between it and the leg - the stick is so wobbly hard to get a neat scrape on it.

The 'I Am The Law' starter set was waiting for me when I got home from work a few days ago. Complete with the Dredd vs Death pre-order mini.

It's a beautiful package but I'd somehow got the impression the boxed mini's would be bigger. Little concern to be honest as this is a really nice set on the whole.

Cheers
